  • Solution-based Sb-doped $SnO_2$ (ATO) transparent conductive oxides using a low-temperature process were fabricated by an electrospray technique followed by spin coating. We demonstrated their structural, chemical, morphological, electrical, and optical properties by means of X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, Hall effect measurement system, and UV-Vis spectrophotometry. In order to investigate optimum electrical and optical properties at low-temperature annealing, we systemically coated two layer, four layer, and six layers of ATO sol-solution using spin-coating on the electrosprayed ATO thin films. The resistivity and optical transmittance of the ATO thin films decreased as the thickness of ATO sol-layer increased. Then, the ATO thin films with two sol-layers exhibited superb figure of merit compared to the other samples. The performance improvement in a low temperature process ($300^{\circ}C$) can be explained by the effect of enhanced carrier concentration due to the improved densification of the ATO thin films causing the optimum sol-layer coating. Therefore, the solution-based ATO thin films prepared at $300^{\circ}C$C exhibited the superb electrical (${\sim}7.25{\times}10^{-3}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$) and optical transmittance (~83.1 %) performances.

  • Micro light-emitting diodes (µLEDs) have been utilized in various fields such as displays, and smart devices, due to their superior stabilities. Since the applications of the µLEDs have been extended to medical devices and wearable sensors, excellent optical properties and uniformity of the µLEDs are important. Hence, several researchers have investigated to enhance the optical efficiency of the µLEDs through micro/nano lens. However, the reported methods for realizing the micro/nano lens have some drawbacks such as complex and high-cost manufacturing processes. Herein, we developed µLEDs with 3D-printed hydrogel microlenses. The printed hydrogel had high transparency and excellent adhesive strength, allowing it to attach onto top surface of the µLEDs without any additional adhesives. Microscale printing technology using a 3D printer achieved quick and fine printing in desired shapes and arrangements, showing the possibility of mass production. The 3D-printed microlens can be applied to improve not only the optical properties of µLEDs but also other optical devices.

  • TFT LCD mode has some well-documented performance limitations, namely limited viewing angle, inversion of the gray scale levels and poor luminance efficiency because of the necessity of using crossed polarisers attached to the display cell. During the last few years many initiatives have been undertaken to solve these problems by incorporation birefringent films of various designs into the LCD module. Controlling the optical performance of LCDs often requires combination of liquid crystal material properties, cell parameters and optical films. Such optical films have traditionally been made with stretched polymer materials such as polycarbonate, but recently coated liquid crystalline materials have been used to give improved optical films which can greatly enhance the performance of LCDs. We have now developed reactive mesogen materials to add ultra-thin optical layers into the display structure, and these allow the potential for many new applications.

  • Recently there has been significant interest in utilizing functional semiconductor polymers for electronic and opto-electronic devices such as Light-emitting diodes, thin film field effect transistors, solar cells, displays, and chemical and biosensors. However, better materials and further understanding of their electronic properties are critical for devices based on these materials. In this work, we use various scanning probe techniques, spectroscopy, and device fabrication to study the molecular interactions, optical and charge transport properties in conjugated polyelectrolytes. Using chemical synthesis approach, we are able to tune the molecular packing and interactions in these materials, which in turn, influence their electronic properties and device performance.

  • Effects of nitrogen and oxygen annealing on the carrier concentration, carrier mobility, electrical resistivity and PL characteristics as well as the crystallinity of ZnO films deposited on sapphire substrates by atomic layer deposition (ALD). X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscope (SEM), photoluminescence (PL) analyses, and Hall measurement were performed to investigate the crystallinity, optical properties and electrical properties of the ZnO thin films, respectively. According to the XRD analysis results the crystallinity of the ZnO film annealed in an oxygen atmosphere is better than that of the ZnO film annealed in a nitrogen atmosphere. Annealing undoped ZnO films grown by ALD at a high temperature above $600^{\circ}C$ improves the crystallinity and enhances W emission but deteriorates the electrical conductivity of the flms. The resistivity of the ZnO film annealed particularly at $800^[\circ}C$ in a nitrogen atmosphere is much higher than that annealed at the same temperature in an oxygen atmosphere.

  • Transparent conducting films having a hybrid structure of GZO/Metal/GZO were prepared on glass substrates by sequential deposition using DC magnetron sputtering. Silver, copper, aluminum and zinc thin films were used as the intermediate metal layers in the hybrid structure. The electrical and optical properties of hybrid transparent conducting films were investigated with varying the thickness of metal layer or GZO layers. With increasing the metal thickness, hybrid films showed a noticeable improvement of the electrical conductivity, which is mainly dependent on the electrical property of the metal layer. GZO(40 nm)/Ag(10 nm)/GZO(40 nm) film exhibits a resistivity of $5.2{\times}10^{-5}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ with an optical transmittance of 82.8%. For the films with Zn interlayer, only marginal reduction in the resistivity was observed. Furthermore, unlike other metals, hybrid films with Zn interlayer showed a decrease in the resistivity with increasing the GZO thickness. The optimal thickness of GZO layer for anti-reflection effect at a given thickness of metal (10 nm) was found to be critically dependent on the refractive index of the metal. In addition, x-ray diffraction analysis showed that the insertion of Ag layer resulted in the improvement of crystallinity of GZO films, which is beneficial for the electrical and optical properties of hybrid-type transparent conducting films.

  • For potential application to quantum mechanical devices, nano-composite thin films, consisting of GaAs quantum dots dispersed in SiO$_2$ glass matrix, were fabricated and studied in terms of structural, chemical, and optical properties. In order to form crystalline GaAs quantum dots at room temperature, uniformly dispersed in $SiO_2$matrix, the composite films were made to consist of alternating layers of GaAs and $SiO_2$in the manner of a superlattice using RF magnetron sputter deposition. Among different film samples, nominal thickness of an individual GaAs layer was varied with a total GaAs volume fraction fixed. From images of High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM), the formation of GaAs quantum dots on SiO$_2$was shown to depend on GaAs nominal thickness. GaAs deposits were crystalline and GaAs compound-like chemically according to HRTEM and XPS analysis, respectively. From measurement of optical absorbance using a spectrophotometer, absorption edges were determined and compared among composite films of varying GaAs nominal thicknesses. A progressively larger shift of absorption edge was noticed toward a blue wavelength with decreasing GaAs nominal thickness, i.e. quantum dots size. Band gaps of the composite films were also determined from Tauc plots as well as from PL measurements, displaying a linear decrease with increasing GaAs nominal thickness.
