  • This paper reports the fabrication of various micro-lensed single-mode optical fibers through the use of an enhanced peak power $CO_2$ laser beam. The end faces of the optical fibers are exposed to the $CO_2$ laser beam to form convex, concave, and conical shape optical fiber tips. Peak power of the $CO_2$ laser beam was varied from 0.8 W to 1.5 W depending on the shape of the optical fiber tip. We also discover the dependence of the angle of the optical fiber tip on the rotation angle and the number of $CO_2$ laser irradiations. The angle shows an increasing trend with both these parameters. We achieve a wide range of lenticular fibers with end face angle varying from $4.47^{\circ}$ to $8.13^{\circ}$. Furthermore, we investigate the emission pattern of light from the developed micro-lensed fibers. The proposed $CO_2$ laser based optical fiber reshaping technique shows great consistency, and thus is suitable for commercial applications.

  • In this work the optical fiber glucose and lactate biosensors were developed by using fluorescent dye and enzyme immobilized on the end tip of an optical fiber. 3-Glycidyloxypropyl)methyldiethoxysilane (GPTMS), (3-Aminopropyl) trimethoxysilane (APTMS) and Methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) were used to immobilize glucose oxidase (GOD), lactate oxidase (LOD) and ruthenium(II) complex (tris(4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline) ruthenium(II), $Ru(dpp)_3^{2+}$) as oxygen sensitive fluorescent dye. MTMS sol-gel was an excellent supporting material for the immobilization of $Ru(dpp)_3^{2+}$, GOD, and LOD on the optical fiber. Storage stability of the optical fiber glucose sensor was kept constant over 20 days, while the optical fiber lactate sensor had constant storage stability over 17 days. The optical fiber glucose and lactate biosensors also maintained good operational stability for 20 hours and 14 hours, respectively. The activities of the immobilized enzymes were most excellent at pH 7 and at $25^{\circ}C$. On-line monitoring of glucose and lactate in a simulated process was performed with the optical fiber glucose and lactate biosensors. On-line monitoring results were agreed with those of off-line data measured with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).

  • The purpose of this study is to find the new method for estiming the spatial variations in a light source with utilizing the optical fiber sensory system. With this aim, firstly the asymmetry in the beam profile of a light source is evaluated by using the tipped optical fiber with 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 45-degree angle. Secondly the variation of position in a light source is estimated by adjusting the relative position between the light source unit (XYZ stage, LED, Optical fiber) and the receiver unit (Photodiode, XYZ stage). Our experimental results show that the spatial variation of a light source can be resolved in terms of the variations in beam profile with varying the tip angle of an optical fiber and adjusting the relative distance between the light source unit and the receiver.

  • We attached a fiber tip on the branch of a quartz crystal oscillator in order to make a feedback control system for near field optical microscope. The electrical impedance of the quartz crystal oscillator depends on the distance between the surface of the sample and the tip caused by the surface damping. Using this method, we can directly monitor the distance between the sample and the tip without inserting extra beam which might give extra optical noise. We characterize the XY scanning resolution and the amplitude of the vibrating tip and the Z-dependent decay of the evanescent wave.

  • In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) optical fiber tip sensor fabricated by a blade-sawing technique using a fiber optic patch cord for high-resolution temperature measurement. The sensor head consists of a short air FP cavity near the tip of a single-mode fiber patch cord tip. The temperature which we can measure is determined through a phase variation of the interference fringes in the reflective spectrum of the sensor. The fiber optic FPI sensor in this work can monitor the environmental temperature very accurately from 40 to $120^{\circ}C$. As a result, the temperature sensitivity is obtained as $38.2pm/^{\circ}C$.

  • As optical communication is being substituted for telecommunication, the demand of a large variety of fiber optic components is increasing. V-groove substrates, one of the module components, are used to connect optical fibers to optical planar circuits and to arrange fibers. Their applications are multi-channel optical connectors and optical waveguide fiber coupling, etc. Because these substrates are a critical part of the splitter in a multiplexer and a multi fiber connector, precise and reliable fabrication process is required. For precisely aligning core pitch between fibers, machined core pitch tolerance should be within sub-microns. Therefore, these are generally produced by state-of-the-art micro-fabrication like MEMS. However, most of the process equipment is very expensive. It is also difficult to change the process line for custom designs to meet specific requirements using various materials. For various design specifications such as different values of the V angle and low-priced process, the fabrication method should be flexible and low cost. To achieve this goal, we have suggested a miniaturized machine tool with high accuracy positioning system. Through this study, it is shown that this cutting process can be applied to produce V-groove subtracts. We also show the possibility of using a miniaturized machining system for producing small parts.

  • Rubber-modified epoxy resins have been employed as adhesive and matrix materials for glass and corbon-fiber composites. The behavior of fracture around a crack tip for rubber-modified epoxy resin is investigated through the acoustic emission (AE) analysis of compact tension specimens. Damage zone and rubber particles distributed around a crack tip were observed by a polarized optical microscope and an atomic force microscope (AFM). The damage zone in front of pre-crack tip in rubber-modified specimen $(15wt\%\; rubber)$ began to form at about $13\%$ level of the fracture load and grew in size until $57\%$ load level. After that, the crack propagated in a stick-slip manner. Based on time-frequency analysis of AE signals and microscopic observation of damage zone, it was thought that AE signals with frequency bands of 0.15-0.20 MHz and 0.200.30 MHz were generated from cavitation in the damage zone and crack propagation, respectively.

  • A new and simple calibration technique that greatly enhances the measurement sensitivity of conventional fiber-optic reflectometry based on Fresnel reflection from the tip of a fiber is used for demonstrating the feasibility of measuring solute concentrations and index changes in fluids to very high precision. The amplitude of pulses originating from reflection from the fiber-fluid interface is compared in real-time with the amplitude of reference pulses from a fiber-air interface such that errors caused by pulse amplitude fluctuations and slightly varying detector responses are corrected. Using solutions of salt and water, it is demonstrated that the technique is capable of measuring index changes of about $1 {\times} 10^{-5}$ corresponding to a salt concentrations of 0.01 %.

  • In this study, radiation sensor tips are fabricated for remote sensing of X or gamma ray with inorganic scintillators and plastic optical fiber. The visible range of light from the inorganic scintillator that is generated by radiation source is guided by the plastic optical fiber and is measured by optical detector and power-meter. Two kinds of sensor tips are designed and fabricated such as film type and powder type. Many kinds of inorganic scintillators are used to fabricate both sensor tips, and the different wavelength of emitting lights from them are measured to determine the optimal inorganic scintillator which has maximum light output. As a radiation source X-ray generator and Ir-192 are selected to test a performance of sensor tip. It is expected that the fiber-optic radiation sensor is widely used in nuclear industry and medical applications due to its special characteristics such as good flexibility, easy in processing, long lengths and no interference to electro magnetic field.
