A micro positioning system using piezoelectric actuators have very wide application region such as ultra-precision machine tool optical device measurement system. In order to keep a high precision displacement resolution it to useful to take a position sensor and feedback of the error. From the practical point of view high-resolution displacement sensor systems are very expensive and it is difficult to make such a sensitive sensor work properly in a poor operational environment of industry. In this study a piezo-electric micro-depth control system which does not require position sensor but piezoelectric voltage feedback has been developed. It is driven by hysteresis-considering reference input voltage calculated in advance and actuator/sensor characteristics of piezoelectric materials. From the result of experiments a fast and stable response of micro-depth control system has been achieved and an efficient technique to control the piezoelectric actuator suggested.

Spindle state monitoring is getting more and more important according to the technology trend of spindle that is accurate and automated. Spindle state monitoring is to measure the state of rotation vibrations. The spindle rotation error motion detected by sensing device includes rotation object's unbalance, external forced vibrations, shape error of spindle, as well as measuring error of monitoring device. In this paper, we have inspected the runout characteristics. Also, we introduce the way to exclude the runout element that appear while you monitor a spindle state.
In this study, a wireless crack sensor is developed for monitoring cracks propagating in two dimensions. This sensor is developed by incorporating a laser-based optical navigation sensor board (ADNS-9500) into a smart wireless platform (Imote2). To measure crack propagation, the Imote2 sends a signal to the ADNS-9500 to collect a sequence of images reflected from the concrete surface. These acquired images can be processed in the ADNS-9500 directly (the navigation mode) or sent to Imote2 for processing (the frame capture mode). The computed crack displacement can then be transmitted wirelessly to a base station. The design and the construction of this sensor are reported herein followed by some calibration tests on one prototype sensor. Test results show that the sensor can provide sub-millimeter accuracy under sinusoidal and step movement. Also, the two modes of operation offer complementary performance as the navigation mode is more accurate in tracking large amplitude and fast crack movement while the frame capture mode is more accurate for small and slow crack movement. These results illustrate the feasibility of developing such a crack sensor as well as point out directions of further research before its actual implementation.
In this paper, a new measuring system is :proposed which can measure the fine 6-DOF displacement of rigid bodies. Its measurement principle is based on detection of laser beam reflected from a specially fabricated mirror that looks like a triangular pyramid having an equilateral cross-sectional shape. The mirror has three lateral reflective surfaces inclined 45$^{\circ}$ to its bottom surface. We call this mirror 3-facet mirror. The 3-facet mirror is mounted on the object whose 6-DOF displacement is to be measured. The measurement is operated by a laser-based optical system composed of a 3-facet mirror, a laser source, three position-sensitive detectors(PSD). In the sensor system, three PSDs are located at three corner points of a triangular formation, which is an equilateral triangular formation tying parallel to the reference plane. The sensitive areas of three PSDs are oriented toward the center point of the triangular formation. The object whose 6-DOF displacement is to be measured is situated at the center with the 3-facet mirror on its top surface. A laser beam is emitted from the laser source located at the upright position and vertically incident on the top of the 3-fatcet mirror. Since each reflective facet faces toward each PSD, the laser beam is reflected at the 3-facet mirror and splits into three sub-beams, each of which is reflected from the three facets and finally arrives at three PSDs, respectively. Since each PSD is a 2-dimensional sensor, we can acquire the information on the 6-DOF displacement of the 3-facet mirror. From this principle, we can get 6-DOF displacement of any object simply by mounting the 3-facet mirror on the object. In this paper, we model the relationship between the 6-DOF displacement of the object and the outputs of three PSDs. And, a series of simulations are performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The simulation results show that the proposed sensing system can be an effective means of obtaining 3-dimensional position and orientation of arbitrary objects.
In this paper, we introduce a multi purpose environmental monitoring system developed as a commercially available standard using the technique of hetero-core spliced fiber optic sensor. The monitoring system has been tested and evaluated in a possible outdoor condition in view of the full scaled operation at actual sites to be monitored. Additionally, the developed system in this work conveniently provides us with various options of sensor modules intended for monitoring such physical quantities as displacement, distortion, pressure, binary states, and liquid adhesion. Two channels of optical fiber line were monitored, in each of which three displacement sensor modules were connected in series, in order to examine the performance to a pseudo-cracking experiment in the outdoor situation, and to clarify temperature influences to the system in terms of the coupling of optical connectors and the OTDR stability. The pseudo-cracking experiment successfully observed the actually given cracks by means of calculation based on the detected displacement values and their geometrical arrangement of the used sensor modules. And the robustness to the temperature is verified in the various temperature change.

In this study, an acceleration sensor that has optical fibers to measure the inclination and acceleration of a structure through contradictory changes in two-component FBG sensors was examined. The proposed method was to ensure precise measurement through the unification of the deformation rate sensor and the angular displacement sensor. A high sensitivity three-axis accelerometer was designed and prepared using this method. To verify the accuracy of the accelerometer, the change in wavelength according to temperature and tension was tested. Then, the change in wavelength of the prepared accelerometer according to the sensor angle, and that of the sensor according to the change in ambient temperature were measured. According to the test results on the FBG-based vibration sensor that was developed using a high-speed vibrator, the range in measurement was 0.7 g or more, wavelength sensitivity, 2150 pm/g or more, and the change in wavelength change, $9.5pm/^{\circ}C$.

In this study, an optical-fiber sensor was used to measure loads that could act in an environment similar to the loading conditions that exist in an actual pipe. The structure and the installation method of the optical-fiber strain sensor were applied considering the actual large pipe and the buried pipe environment. Load tests were performed using a displacement sensor and sandbags to determine the deflection of the pipe according to the external load, and the linear measurement results were verified. Considering the conditions that could exist in the actual pipe, the test method was presented, and the strain of the buried pipe generated at this time was measured.

In this research, the fiber Bragg grating sensors with long gauge for displacement measurement in the long distance is developed and tested. The sensors show an accuracy and a capability for displacement measurement oin long distance. Monitoring using static logger of system of FBG sensor with strained optical fiber shows the capability of measurement in the harsh environment such as strong wind. Measurement of long distance displacement by optical fiber sensor if use $250{\mu}m$ optical fiber and impose some strong pre-tension shows possibility in monitoring of nuclear containment structure.

The vision sensor which is based on the optical triangulation theory with the laser as an auxiliary light source can detect not only the seam position but the shape of seam. In this study, a vision sensor using the scanning laser beam was investigated. To design the vision sensor which considers the reflectivity of the sensing object and satisfies the desired resolution and measuring range, the equation of the focused laser beam which has a Gaussian irradiance profile was firstly formulated, Secondly, the image formaing sequence, and thirdly the relation between the displacement in the measuring surface and the displacement in the camera plane was formulated. Therefore, the focused beam diameter in the measuring range could be determined and the influence of the relative location between the laser and camera plane could be estimated. The measuring range and the resolution of the vision sensor which was based on the Scheimpflug's condition could also be calculated. From the results mentioned above a vision sensor was developed, and an adequate calibration technique was proposed. The image processing algorithm which and recognize the center of joint and its shape informaitons was investigated. Using the developed vision sensor and image processing algorithm, the shape informations was investigated. Using the developed vision sensor and image processing algorithm, the shape informations of the vee-, butt- and lap joint were extracted.

This paper presents a small loading and positioning device using VCM (voice coil motor). The developed device consists of a VCM-based linear actuating system, a capacitance displacement sensor and a cantilever deflection sensing system. The trust force of the VCM proportional to applied current moves the column supported on two pairs of parallel leaf springs. The infinitesimal displacement of moved column is detected by capacitance displacement sensor with a resolution of 0.1nm and a repeatability of 1nm. Also, a micro cantilever with known stiffness (200N/m), which is mounted on the end of the column, is used as a force sensor to detect the load applied to a specimen. After the cantilever contacts with the specimen, the deflection of cantilever and the load applied to the specimen are measured by using an optical lever system which consists of a diode laser, a mirror and a PSD (position sensitive detector). In this paper, an experimental system was constructed and its actuator and sensing parts were tested and calibrated. Also, the constructed system was applied to the indentation experiment and the load-displacement curve of aluminum was obtained. Experimental results showed that the developed device can be applied for performing nano indentation.
