  • Recently, the RF inductive discharge or inductively coupled plasma continues to attract growing attention as an effective plasma source in many industrial applications, the best known of which are plasma processing and lighting technology. To the point of lighting sources, the ring-shaped electrodeless fluorescent lamps utilizing an inductively coupled plasma have been objects of interest and research during the last decades, mainly because of their potential for extremely long life, high lamp efficacies, rapid power switching response. In this paper, maxwell 3D finite element analysis program (Ansoft) was used to obtain electromagnetic properties associated with the coil and nearby structures. The electromagnetic emitting properties were presented by 3D simulation software operated at 250 kHz and some specific conditions. The electromagnetic field in the ferrite core was shown to be high and symmetric. An LS-100 luminance meter and a Darsa-2000 spectrum analyzer were used in the experiment. According to data on the lamp tested using high magnetic field ferrite, the optical and thermal wave fields were shown to be high around the ring-shaped electrodeless fluorescent lamp. The optical or light field was high at the center of the bulb rather than around the ferrite core. The light conditions of the bulb were assumed to be complex, depending on the condition of the filler gas, the volume of the bulb, and the frequency of the inverter. Our results have shown coupling between the gas plasma and the field of the light emitted to be nonlinear.

  • The reflectance spectrum of optical films thicker than a few microns shows an intensity oscillation due to interference. Since the spectral period of the oscillation is inversely related to film thickness, the thickness of an optical film can be determined from the spectral frequency of the oscillation. For rapid data processing, the spectral frequency is obtained by use of a Fast Fourier Transformation technique. The conventional method of applying a Fast Fourier Transformation to the reflectance spectrum versus photon energy is modified so as to clear the ambiguity in choosing the proper effective refractive index value and to prevent the broadening of the Fourier transformed peak due to the refractive index dispersion. This technique of modified Fast Fourier Transformation is suggested by the authors for the first time to their knowledge. From the analysis of the calculated reflectance spectrum of a 30-${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$-thick dielectric film. it is shown to improve the accuracy in determining film thickness by a great amount. The improved accuracy of the modified Fast Fourier Transformation is also confirmed from the analysis of the reflectance spectra of a sample with 80-${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$-thick cover layer and 13-${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$-thick spacer layer on a PC substrate.

  • In coastal waters, phytoplankton, suspended particulate matter, and dissolved organic matter intricately and nonlinearly alter the reflectivity of seawater. Neural network technology, which has been rapidly advancing recently, offers the advantage of effectively representing complex nonlinear relationships. In previous studies, a three-stage neural network was constructed to extract the inherent optical properties of each component. However, this study proposes an algorithm that directly employs a deep neural network. The dataset used in this study consists of synthetic data provided by the International Ocean Color Coordination Group, with the input data comprising above-surface remote-sensing reflectance at nine different wavelengths. We derived inherent optical properties using this dataset based on a deep neural network. To evaluate performance, we compared it with a quasi-analytical algorithm and analyzed the impact of log transformation on the performance of the deep neural network algorithm in relation to data distribution. As a result, we found that the deep neural network algorithm accurately estimated the inherent optical properties except for the absorption coefficient of suspended particulate matter (R2 greater than or equal to 0.9) and successfully separated the sum of the absorption coefficient of suspended particulate matter and dissolved organic matter into the absorption coefficient of suspended particulate matter and dissolved organic matter, respectively. We also observed that the algorithm, when directly applied without log transformation of the data, showed little difference in performance. To effectively apply the findings of this study to ocean color data processing, further research is needed to perform learning using field data and additional datasets from various marine regions, compare and analyze empirical and semi-analytical methods, and appropriately assess the strengths and weaknesses of each algorithm.

  • Transverse velocity vectors can be determined from a pair of images successively taken with a time interval using an optical flow technique. We have tested the performance of the new technique called NAVE (non-linear affine velocity estimator) recently implemented by Chae & Sakurai using real image data taken by the Narrowband Filter Imager (NFI) of the Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) aboard the Hinode satellite. We have developed two methods of estimating the errors in the determination of velocity vectors, one resulting from the non-linear fitting ${\sigma}_{\upsilon}$ and the other ${\epsilon}_u$ resulting from the statistics of the determined velocity vectors. The real error is expected to be somewhere between ${\sigma}_{\upsilon}$ and ${\epsilon}_u$. We have investigated the dependence of the determined velocity vectors and their errors on the different parameters such as the critical speed for the subsonic filtering, the width of the localizing window, the time interval between two successive images, and the signal-to-noise ratio of the feature. With the choice of $v_{crit}$ = 2 pixel/step for the subsonic filtering, and the window FWHM of 16 pixels, and the time interval of one step (2 minutes), we find that the errors of velocity vectors determined using the NAVE range from around 0.04 pixel/step in high signal-to-noise ratio features (S/N $\sim$ 10), to 0.1 pixel/step in low signa-to-noise ratio features (S/N $\sim$ 3) with the mean of about 0.06 pixel/step where 1 pixel/step corresponds roughly to 1 km/s in our case.

  • This work forcus on the development of gas sensor that measure the concentrations of exhaust gas using diode laser. Each diode laser for exhaust gas measurement is set to work at near-IR using both DA and WMS methods. Also use of fiber-coupled optical elements makes such a sensor rugged and easy to align. On-line data acquisition and processing can be performed with a PC running LabVIEW software, and absorption signals are measured simultaneously by multiplexing method. Finally, It were experimentally compared WMS (Wavelength Modulation Spectroscopy) with DA (Direct Absorption) for the accuracy.

  • A computer code was developed to simulate the filling stage of an injection/compression molding process using a finite element method. The constitutive equation was the compressible Leonov model and the PVT relationship was assumed to follow the Tait equation. The flow-induced birefringence was related to the calculated flow stresses through the linear stress-optical law. Simulations of a disk under different processing conditions, including variations of the compression stroke and compression speed, were performed to determine their effects on the flow-induced birefringence. Simulated pressure traces were also compared to those obtained in conventional injection molding and with experimental data from the literature.

  • A study of heat transfer and thermophoretic particle deposition has been carried out for the Modified Chemical Vapor Deposition(MCVD) process. A new concept utilizing two torches is suggested to simulate the heating effects from repeated traversing torches. Calculation results for the wall temperatures and deposition efficiency are in good agreement with experimental data. The effects of variable properties are included and heat flux boundary condition is used to simulate the moving torch heating. A conjugate heat transfer which includes heat conduction through solid layer and heat teansfer in a gas in a tube is analyzed. Of particular interests are the effects of torch speeds and solid layer thicknesses on the deposition efficiency, rate and the tapered entry length.

  • The Automated Quantitative Knife-Edge Test (AQuaKET) method was developed for testing the surface profiles of large optics with high accuracy. Testing with the required accuracy of very large telescope is not an easy job to achieve, as it is a nano-technology. There are lots of possible error sources which can occur during the measurements and in the data processing of the AQuaKET. The error sources can be categorized into 5 areas: optics, mechanics, electronics, numerical processes, and system. In this paper, possible error sources in Optics are discussed, which are intensity variation of the light source, diffraction effects, and parallax effect. In this talk, those possible error sources in optics are presented and discussed.

  • Compared with other transport means, safety and timeliness are the merits of railways. Unexpectedly when accident happens, much time and human strength are required to cope with the accident. And for swift recovery, systematic rehabilitation is needed. Recently using MTS(Moving picture Transmission System), we can perform accident rehabilitation and recording work efficiently. MTS is the device that transmits continuous picture information from accident field to control center. e are developing the appropriate system to railway situation to make use of the existing information communication technology, processing technology of video-tex, super high speed transmission technology through fiber-optic, copper cable and network description of information Technology, etc. If these communication-based can technologies are applied to railway system, railway managers can control the accident by inspecting the picture of accident field and can contribute to the safe train operation and the improvement of railway management. In this paper, we investigate the connecting methods when optical fiber is used for moving picture data transmission of train accidents, and its problems. And, we validate MTS's performance through about 28km section of field test.
