  • The conventional liquid crystal displays (LCDs) have been using optically uniaxial liquid crystal (LC) medium and this often causes a significant image change at oblique viewing angles. We simulated the viewing angle properties of the biaxial nematic (Nb) phase of a bent-core liquid crystal (BLC) and compared the results with the vertically aligned (VA)- and the in-plane switching (IPS)-LCDs. The Nb phase of the BLC showed a smaller transmittance at the dark state as well as a greater contrast ratio at wide viewing angle. The viewing angle property of the Nb-mode without any compensation film was slightly superior to the IPS-mode with the compensation films eliminating the decross of the polarizers at oblique viewing angle.

  • Lens designers generally refer to flat image fields and attempt to minimize the field curvature. Present-day CMOS image sensors for mobile phone cameras, however, are not flat, but curved. Sometimes it is necessary to generate an intentional field curvature according to the degree and direction of the CMOS image-sensor’s curvature. This paper presents the degree of curvature of a CMOS image sensor measured using an interferometer, and proposes an effective compensation method that minimizes the net field curvature through optimizing the air gap between lens elements, which is demonstrated using simulations and experiments.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient design method for a thermal camera with continuous zoom based on the research and manufacturing experience of the thermal camera. In addition, it is divided into system design method, optical design method, mechanical design method, and electronic design method. First, we propose an effective NUC compensation method and a lens-specific sensitivity design method in terms of system. Second, we propose a zoom trajectory design method considering the temperature effect on the optical aspect. Third, it suggests the minimization of optical axis shaking between magnification conversion in terms of mechanism. Finally, we propose a lens-specific temperature compensation method and a speed conversion algorithm according to the zoom interval as an electronic aspect.

  • Circularly polarized (CP) emission can be achieved by integrating emissive materials into chiral metasurfaces. Such CP light sources in integrated device platforms are desirable for important potential applications. However, the exact characterization of the polarization state in CP emission may include some errors because of the unwanted polarization distortion caused by optical components (e.g., beam splitter) in the optical setup. Here, we consider CP emission measurements from chiral metasurfaces and characterize the polarization distortion caused by the beam splitter. We first detail the procedures for the Stokes parameters and Mueller matrix measurements. Then, we directly measure the Mueller matrix of the beam splitter and retrieve the original polarization state of CP emission from our metasurface sample. Using the measured Mueller matrix of the beam splitter, we specifically identify what contributes to polarization distortion in CP emission. Our work may provide useful guidelines for the characterization and compensation of polarization distortion in general Stokes parameter measurements.

  • In this study, we report an effective k-domain linearization method with a pre-calibrated indexed look-up table. The method minimizes k-domain nonlinear characteristics of a swept source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) system by using two arrays, a sample position shift index and an intensity compensation array. Two arrays are generated from an interference pattern acquired by connecting a Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) and an optical spectrum analyzer (OSA) to the system. At real time imaging, the sample position is modified by location movement and intensity compensation with two arrays for linearity of wavenumber. As a result of evaluating point spread functions (PSFs), the signal to noise ratio (SNR) is increased by 9.7 dB. When applied to infrared (IR) sensing card imaging, the SNR is increased by 1.29 dB and the contrast noise ratio (CNR) value is increased by 1.44. The time required for the linearization and intensity compensation is 30 ms for a multi thread method using a central processing unit (CPU) compared to 0.8 ms for compute unified device architecture (CUDA) processing using a graphics processing unit (GPU). We verified that our linearization method is appropriate for applying real time imaging of SS-OCT.

  • The length of optical fiber in dispersion-managed link combined with optical phase conjugation to compensate for signal distortion caused by chromatic dispersion and nonlinear Kerr effect is a major factor determining the compensation effectiveness. The dispersion-managed link consists of several fiber spans in which standard single mode fiber and dispersion compensating fiber are arranged. In this paper, the compensation effect in the link that changes residual dispersion per span only by adjusting the length of one type of optical fiber, which is different in the first half link and the second half link with respect to optical phase conjugator (OPC), has been investigated. It was confirmed that the best compensation for 960 Gb/s wavelength division multiplexed signal could be obtained in the dispersion-managed link, in which the cumulative dispersion profile is symmetric around the OPC, and the cumulative dispersion amount is all positive in the first half, and all the cumulative dispersion amount is distributed negatively in the second half.

  • The possibility of implementing nonuniform residual dispersion per span (RDPS) in optical links with net residual dispersion (NRD) controlled by precompensation and postcompensation for 960 Gbps WDM transmissions is studied and discussed. The fiber optic communication links investigated in this paper consist of inline dispersion management (DM) for each fiber spans and optical phase conjugator (OPC) at mid-way of total transmission length in order to compensate for WDM signal distortions due to group velocity dispersion (GVD) and nonlinearities. It is confirmed that the effect of nonuniform RDPS distribution on system performance is not significant. It is also confirmed that the optimal NRD is obtained to be one of two values of +10 ps/nm or -10 ps/nm, which depend on the deciding of NRD controlled by precompensation or postcompensation, and the exact RDPS configurations. The effective NRD ranges resulting eye opening penalty (EOP) below 1 dB are independent on the exact RDPS distribution for relative low launch power. Therefore, results show the possibility of implementing the flexible optical links to expand network construction for WDM transmission of high bit-rate capability.
