  • A new CAD program for double E-plane bandpass filters is developed based on the variational analysis method and the passband correction method combined with the synthesis procedures. By taking the widths of three narrow waveguide equally, we can design bandpass filters with best stopband characteristics.

  • Narrowband bandpass waveguide filters using inducive post obstacles are designed and constructed to have an equal-ripple bandwidth of 50MHz at a center frequency of 9GHz. Both the triple-post and the single-post configurations are realized and compared. The measured results for both filters show good agreement with the theoretical calculations. When the two filters are compared, the performance of the triple-post filter is better than that of the single-post filter.

  • Microwave Photonic(MWP) filters capable of use a bandpass filter or a notch filter with large bandwidth have been proposed. 4-lines${\times}$2-bit fiber-optic delay lines with a unit time-delay difference of 50 ps were experimentally realized. By changing the time-delay difference and the coefficients of microwave-modulated optical signals, the bandpass and notch filters were implemented and characterized.

  • Terahertz dual-band frequency selective surface filters made by perforating two different rectangular holes in molybdenum have been designed, fabricated and measured. Physical mechanisms of the dual-band resonant responses are clarified by three differently configured filters and the electric field distribution diagrams. The design process is straightforward and simple according to the physical concept and some formulas. Due to the weak coupling between the two neighboring rectangle holes with different sizes in the unit cell, good dual-band frequency selectivity performance can be easily achieved both in the lower and higher bands by tuning dimensions of the two rectangular holes. Three samples are fabricated, and their dual-band characteristics have been demonstrated by a THz time-domain spectroscopy system. Different from most commonly used metal-dielectric structure or metal-dielectric-metal sandwiched filters, the designed dual-band filters have advantages of easy fabrication and low cost, the encouraging results afforded by these filters could find their applications in dual-band sensors, THz communication systems and other emerging THz technologies.

  • We have designed photonic crystal based bandpass filters whose characteristics are suitable for WDM communication system. The filters consist of coupled point defect resonators in two-dimensional photonic crystal. The frequency response of coupled resonators has been analyzed by the coupling of modes in time, from which the design parameters for the coupled resonator filters have been extracted. For the appropriate choice of the design parameters, each resonator is treated as a lumped L-C resonance circuit, and from the analogy between the equivalent circuit and the standard L-C filter circuits, the design parameters are simply determined from the table for general filter circuit design. Based on the determined design parameters, a photonic crystal based filter has been designed and its performance has been calculated using the finite-difference time-domain method. The designed filter shows a pass band of 50GHz and 0.5 dB in-band ripple, which is suitable for typical WDM communication systems with 100GHz channel spacing.

Broadband and Polarization Independent Terahertz Metamaterial Filters Using Metal-Dielectric-Metal Complementary Ring Structure

  • Broadband metal-dielectric-metal terahertz filters composed of complementary rings are designed and demonstrated. Four samples with different parameters were fabricated. Results measured using THz time-domain spectroscopy system show excellent agreement with simulations. Compared with the broadband filters reported before, the complementary ring structure in our design is insensitive to any polarization at normal incidence due to symmetry of the ring. Furthermore, the influence of structure parameters (such as period, radius, slot width, thickness and incidence angles) on the transmission characteristics has been investigated theoretically. The encouraging results afforded by designing of the filters could find applications in broadband sensors, terahertz communication systems, and other emerging terahertz technologies.

Reflectance Characteristics of the Tobacco Leaves (잎담배의 광반사 특성)

  • Optical properties of the tobacco leaves were determined. Surface colors and reflectance characteristics of the flue-cured variety and the Burley variety with thin and thick leaves were measured. Color was measured by CIE colorimeter and reflectance was measured with a laboratory built reflectance meter utilizing optical bandpass filters whose center wavelengths are from 400 to 700 nm at intervals of 50 nm. The resulting data indicated that the measured color and reflectance would be useful in inspecting tobacco. However no single optical data could be used to successfully grade tobacco leaves.

  • In this paper, we design wavelet matched filters using Wavelet Transform available in the field of time-frequency analysis, for the optical patter recognition, and study optical correlation properites according to variations of the dilation factor of wavelet functions, which were compared with conventional matched filter and POF. We have found that the wavelet matched filters depend upon the shapes if used input patterns and dilation factors of the wavelet function in order to have the best dicriminability. Also, we show the edge enhanced effects of 2-D image, which is one of the properities of the wavelet transform. If has been found that the wavelet matched filter can discriminate better than the conventional matched filter and POF owing to their bandpass properties, and found that the proposed wavelet matched filters have more sensitive correlation response than POF.

  • WDM thin film filters for fiber optical communication were designed using Fabry-Prot type multiple cavity filters and an equivalent thin film technique. As the number of cavities in multiple cavity filters increases, it becomes difficult to design the filters due to a great number of variables (the number of cavities, period of reflectors, order of spacers). To solve the problem of design, we treated the fewest variables, regarding symmetrical thin films as equivalent layers, and we applied structural and numerical formulas based on an analysis method of multiple cavity filters. The equivalent thin film technique was able to provide systematic and quantitative design of the WDM thin film filters.

  • Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) has been developing the Camera System for the Total Solar Eclipse (TSE) observation. In 2016 we have assembled a simple camera system consisting of a commercial camera lens, a polarizer, bandpass filters, and a Canon camera to observe the solar corona during the Total Solar Eclipse in Indonesia. For 2017 TSE observation, we have studied and adapted the compact coronagraph design proposed by NASA. The compact coronagraph design dramatically reduces the volume and weight, and used for TSE observation. The camera is used to test and verify key components including function of bandpass filter, polarizer, and CCD during observing the Total Solar Eclipse. In this poster we focus on optical engineering works including designing, analyzing, testing, and building for the TSE observation.
