  • This paper describes the optimal design of an AWG spectrum to meet various specifications and improve some physical parameters. The objective function is the norm of the difference between design parameters and target values. To obtain the design parameters, the Fourier model is employed and the design variables arc spacing of array waveguide, width of array waveguide, optical path difference, and focal length. The (1+1) Evolution Strategy is employed as the optimization tool. The optimization procedure is applied to a 16-channel AWG and the optimized design variables will considerably improve the system performance.

  • Recently, with the rapid development of the waveguide division multiplexing (WDM) systems for large capacity and flexibility of information network, the broad band 1.5$\mu\textrm{m}$ erbium-doped waveguide amplifier (EDWA) become important. The main factors affecting the performance of sol-gel-based waveguides are non-radiative relaxation channels due to rare-earth concentration quenching and to vibration of the OH groups Therefore, the sol-gel process has to be carefully controlled in order to minimize the residual OH content.

  • An optimization methodology for designing a dielectric-filled plasmonic slot waveguide is presented. The genetic algorithm combined with a rigorous analysis based on the finite element method is used to optimize a nano-scaled plasmonic slot waveguide to have high mode confinement and a long propagation length, for which the objective function is defined as a figure of merit combining both propagation parameters.

  • We report on a ridge waveguide laser diode with laterally tapered waveguides fabricated in a single growing step using a double patterning method. In this structure, nearly constant output power is obtained with the change of the lower tapered waveguide width, and the facet power ratio of 1.4 to 1.5 is observed over the current range. The asymmetric facet power property is also investigated.

  • We propose a design and optimization method for a dielectric-loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguide using a genetic algorithm. This structure consists of a polymer ridge on top of two layers of substrate and gold film. The thickness, width and refractive index of the ridge are designed to optimize the figures of merit including mode confinement and propagation length. The modal analysis combined with the effective index method shows that the designed waveguide exhibits a fundamental propagation mode with high mode confinement while ensuring that the propagation loss remains relatively low.

  • Full color holographic optical element fabrication using a photopolymer is proposed for a waveguide-type head mounted display. The fabricated full color holographic optical elements can be attached to the waveguide to replace the conventional couple-in and couple-out optics in the head mounted display. To implement the system, this study analyzed the optical characteristics of the photopolymer using three lasers (red, green and blue). Considering the color uniformity, a new laminated structure for a full color holographic optical element was also designed. The proposed system was confirmed experimentally.

  • In this study, the internal structure of an optical waveguide embedded in a flexible optical circuit board is observed with a confocal microscope. In order to increase the light reflection from an internal material interface with a very small index difference, and thus enhance the signal contrast, a theta microscopy scheme has been integrated into a conventional confocal microscope, and a high NA oil-immersion lens has been used. The interface reflectivity is increased from roughly 0.0015% to 0.025% by the proposed method, and the internal structure can thus be successfully measured.

  • The optical signal injected into an end-fire optical phased array propagates along the waveguides inside the device and is emitted from the edge of the antenna. In general, reflection and scattering occur at the boundary, thereby reducing the emission efficiency of the optical signal. In this article, we propose a silicon nitride (Si3N4) tapered waveguide antenna structure whose width is tapered toward the emitting edge, achieving high emission efficiency operating at the 1,550 nm wavelength. The Si3N4 tapered waveguide antenna was numerically designed using the 3D finite-difference time-domain method. The optical signal emission efficiency increased from 78% to 96.3%, while reflectance decreased from 22% to 3.7% compared with the untapered waveguide antenna counterpart. This result will not only boost the optical signal intensity but also mitigate optical noise resulting from back reflection along the waveguide in the end-fire optical phased array device.

  • We demonstrate 10 Gbps optical signal transmission via long-range surface plasmon polaritons (LR-SPPs) in a very thin metal strip-guided geometry. The LR-SPP waveguide was fabricated as a 14 nm thick, 2.5 ${\mu}m$ wide, and 4 cm long gold strip embedded in a polymer and pigtailed with single-mode fibers. The total insertion loss of 16 dB was achieved at a wavelength of 1.55 ${\mu}m$ as a carrier wave. In a 10 Gbps optical signal transmission experiment, the LR-SPP waveguide exhibits an excellent eye opening and a 2.2 dB power penalty at $10^{-12}$ bit error rate. We confirm, for the first time, that LR-SPPs can efficiently transfer data signals as well as the carrier light.

  • Four types of three-waveguide optical switches are analyzed by measns of the coupled mode theory. Assuming that three proximate waveguides of an optical switch are identical and equally spaced, we examine the switching behavior for both cases where an incident beam is launched into 1) the outer waveguide, 2) the center waveguide. For each beam-launching case, switching voltage is applied so that three waveguides refractive indices be detuned 1) symmetric, 2) anti-symmetric. It is concluded that only three types of optical switches out of four an perform the switching operation. We derive the switching conditions for ach of three possible types and draw the corresponding switching diagrams.
