An enzyme-free optical method is proposed for estimating high concentrations of glucose in a glucose-lactose mixture, based on a predictive equation that takes advantage of the reflective optical power observed at two discrete wavelengths. Compared to the conventional absorption spectroscopy method based on Beer's Law, which is mainly valid for concentrations below hundreds of mg/dL, the proposed scheme, which relies on reflection signals, can be applied to measure higher glucose concentrations, of even several g/dL in a glucose-lactose mixture. Two probe wavelengths of 1160 and 1300 nm were selected to provide a linear relationship between the reflective power and pure glucose/lactose concentration, where the relevant linear coefficients were derived to complete the predictive equation. Glucose concentrations from 2 to 7 g/dL in a glucose-lactose mixture were efficiently estimated, using the established predictive equation based on monitored reflective powers. The standard error of prediction was 1.17 g/dL.

Intraoperative surgical microscope is an essential surgical equipment. However, it has a restriction to classify the retina layers because of the contrast differences. To solve this problem, operators use surgical instrument such as an intraocular mirror. In this case, it has to amputate the patient's eye. In this study, we developed a probe the intraoperative surgical optical coherence tomography. We expect that the developed OCT probe can overcome the limit of OCT and be applied as a real-time surgical tool. In this paper, we demonstrate applicability of the probe through rabbit's experimentation.

The diaphragm-type stylus probe was developed for ultra-precision on-machine measurement (OMM) application. This probe is equipped with two diaphragms which are parallel and one capacitive sensor is used for detecting the vertical motion of end tip in the stylus when it is contacted to the optical freeform surface. For better performance of proposed probes, several design parameters such as axial stiffness and the lateral deformations were investigated with finite element analysis techniques. To verify the feasibility, the profiles of the master sphere ball were measured on the ultra-precision milling machine. The measurement results show that the proposed probe can calculate the radius of the circle within the accuracy of 0.1 ${\mu}m$ for the ultraprecision optical surface.

Plasma is widely used in various commercial etchers and chemical vapor deposition. Unfortunately, real-time plasma process monitoring is still difficult. Some methods of plasma diagnosis is improved, however, it is possible for real-time plasma diagnosis to use non-intrusive probe only. In this research, the object is to investigate the suitability of using impedance analysis and optical emission spectroscopy (OES) for real-time plasma process monitoring. It is assumed that plasma system is a equivalent circuit. Therefore, V-I probe is used for measuring impedance, which can be a new non-intrusive probe for plasma diagnosis. From impedance data, we tried to analyse physical properties of plasma. And OES, the other method of plasma diagnosis, is a typical non-intrusive probe for analyzing chemical properties. The amount of the OES data is typically large, so this poses a difficulty in extracting relevant information. To solve this problem, principal component analysis (PCA) can be used. For fundamental information, Ar plasma and $O_2$ plasma are used in this experiment. This method can be applied to real-time endpoint and fault detections.
Various methods have been investigated to increase photon density in soft tissue, an important factor in low-level laser therapy. Previously we developed a compression-controlled low-level laser probe (CCLLP) utilizing mechanical negative compression, and experimentally verified its efficacy. In this study, we used Bezier curves to numerically simulate the skin deformation and photon density variation generated by the CCLLP. In addition, we numerically modeled changes in optical coefficients due to skin deformation using a linearization technique with appropriate parameterization. The simulated results were consistent with both human in vivo and porcine ex vivo experimental results, confirming the efficacy of the CCLLP.

Light losses in optical fibers are investigated by a fiber optic OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometry) sensor system to develop fiber optic probes for structural strain measurement. The sensing fibers are manufactured 3 kinds of fibers: one is single mode fiber, and second is multimode fiber, and the third is low-cladding-index fiber. Fiber bending tests are performed to determine the strain sensitivity according to the strain of gage length of optical fibers. In the result of this experiments, the strain sensitivity of the single mode fiber was shown the highest value than others. The fiber optic strain probe was manufactured to verify the feasibility of the structural strain measurement. In this test, the fiber optic strain probe of the OTDR sensor could be easily made by the single mode fiber.

Although various ophthalmic imaging methods, including fundus photography and optical coherence tomography, have been applied for effective diagnosis of ocular diseases with high spatial resolution, most of them are limited by shallow imaging penetration depth and a narrow field of view. Also, many of those imaging modalities are optimized to provide microscopic anatomical information, while functional or cellular information is lacking. Compared to other ocular imaging modalities, photoacoustic imaging can achieve relatively deep penetration depth and provide more detailed functional and cellular data based on photoacoustic signal generation from endogenous contrast agents such as hemoglobin and melanin. In this paper, array-based ultrasound and photoacoustic imaging was demonstrated to visualize pigmentation in the eye as well as overall ocular structure. Fresh porcine eyes were visualized using a real-time ultrasound micro-imaging system and an imaging probe supporting laser pulse delivery. In addition, limited photoacoustic imaging field of view was improved by an imaging probe tilting method, enabling visualization of most regions of the retina covered in the ultrasound imaging.

The probes of fiber optic OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometry) sensor was developed to measure displacements of social infrastructures. This probe was simply constructed with two conventional optical fiber connectors, and a fiber bending part, which transforms displacement to optical loss. When the displacement was affected on the bending loss part, the reflected light intensity of one optical connector was changed. The displacement was determined from this reflected light intensity change of the connector. fiber optic OTDR displacement sensor was developed as the multiplexed type of one fiber line with 5 sensor probes. Multiplexing operation was tested by these 5 sensor probes.

An intermodal switch based on optically-induced (through optical Kerr effect) periodic coupling in a two-mode waveguide is described and demonstrated. A high power pump beam injected into the two modes of the waveguide produced a periodic modulation of the refractive index profile with a period of modal beat length. this causes an intermodal coupling of the prove beam. The operating principle was successfully demonstrated in an elliptical core two-mode fiber with a counter-propagating pump-probe scheme.
