  • The passivity behavior of copper anode containing impurities in copper sulfate solution for electrorefining process was studied at several different levels of impurities such as As, Sb, Bi and Pb. The passivity behavior was investigated by electrochemical techniques (galvanostatic, potentiodynamic and cyclic voltammetry tests) and surface analysis (optical microscopy, electron probe microanalysis, scanning electron microscopy). The results were that arsenic, antimony inhibited passivation and bismuth accelerated it and lead containing anode showed different passivity behavior from above anodes. The improved passivity characteristics could be explained by decrease in oxygen content in passivity film which resulted from a reaction among the impurities, oxygen and copper in the anode. The SEM image revealed that arsenic or antimony containing anode exhibited a porous passivity film and bismuth containing anode showed the compact passivity film and lead containing anode had loose passivity film on anode.

  • In this study, the surface modification of copper foil using an inductively coupled $O_2$ / Ar plasma as $O_2$ gas fraction (0~100%) was investigated in order to improve the surface characteristics. After plasma treatment, the measurement of the surface roughness, surface contact angle and surface energy were performed for the surface analysis of copper foil. As a result, the surface roughness and the surface energy were increased. And plasma diagnostics was performed by a double Langmuir probe (DLP) and optical emission spectroscopy (OES). Using these results, the plasma surface modification mechanism was investigated.

  • This work, the etching characteristics of $Ba_2Ti_9O_{20}$(BTO) thin films were investigated using an inductively coupled plasma (ICP) of $Ar/Cl_2$ gas mixture. The etch rate of BTO thin films as well as the $BTO/SiO_2$ and BTO/PR etch selectivity were measured as functions of $Ar/Cl_2$ mixing ratio (0~100% Ar) at a constants gas pressure (6 mTorr), total gas flow rate (50 sccm), input power (700 W) and bias power (200 W). The etch rate of BTO thin films decreased with increasing Ar fraction. To analyze the etching mechanism an optical emission spectroscopy (OES), double Langmuir probe(DLP) and surface analysis using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were carried out.

  • Friction stir welding using aluminum alloys has been widely applied for transportation vehicles because of the light specific weight, which can be used to obtain sound joint and high mechanical properties. This study shows the effects of rotation speed, welding speed, welding load, and tool shape on defect formation with extruded AA6005, which is used for railway vehicle structures of non-uniform thickness welded by friction stir welding using load control systems. Optical microscopy observations and liquid penetrant testing of each FSW joint were carried out in order to observe defect formation. Two kinds of defects, that of probe wear and that of lack of penetration in the bottom of the welded zone, were observed. In the case of using a taper shaped tool, the defect free zone is very narrow, within 100 kgf; however, in case of using a cylindrical shape tool, the defect free zone is wider.

  • We use multi-wavelength observations of galaxy groups to probe the formation models for galaxy formation in cosmological simulations, statistically. The observations include Chandra and XMM-Newton X-ray observations, optical photometry and radio observations at 1.4 GHz and 610 MHz. Using a large sample of galaxy groups observed by the XMM-Newton X-ray telescope as part of the XMM-Large Scale Survey, we carried out a statistical study of the redshift evolution of the luminosity gap for a well defined mass-selected group sample and show the relative success of some of the semi-analytic models in reproducing the observed properties of galaxy groups up to redshift z ~ 1.2. The observed trend argues in favour of a stronger evolution of the feedback from active galactic nuclei at z < 1 compared to the models. The slope of the relation between the magnitude of the brightest cluster galaxy and the value of the luminosity gap does not evolve with redshift and is well reproduced by the models. We find that the radio power of giant elliptic galaxies residing in galaxy groups with a large luminosity gap are lower compared to giant ellipticals of the same stellar masses but in typical galaxy groups.

  • Vertically aligned zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods (NRs) with different surface morphology were grown by metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) on sapphire substrate. The films thus prepared were characterized by measuring X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies. To study the effect of surface morphology on wettability, the contact angle (CA) of water was measured. It was demonstrated that the CA of the deposited ZnO NRs varied between $104^{\circ}$ and $135^{\circ}$ depending upon the surface morphology. Variable temperature photoluminescence (PL) have employed to probe the exciton recombination in high density and vertically aligned ZnO Nanorod arrays. The low-temperature PL characterizes the dominant near-band-edge excitonic emissions from such nanorod arrays.

  • The photovoltaic properties of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with a carbon electrode fabricated using different annealing processes are investigated. Perovskite formation (50 ℃, 60 min) using a hot-plate and an oven is carried out on cells with a glass/fluorine doped TiO2/TiO2/ZrO2/carbon structure, and the photovoltaic properties of the PSCs are analyzed using a solar simulator. The microstructures of the PSCs are characterized using an optical microscope, a field emission scanning electron microscope, and an electron probe micro-analyzer (EPMA). Photovoltaic analysis shows that the energy conversion efficiency of the samples fabricated using the hot-plate and the oven processes are 2.08% and 6.90%, respectively. Based on the microstructure of the samples and the results of the EPMA, perovskite is formed locally on the carbon electrode surface as the γ-butyrolactone (GBL) solvent evaporates and moves to the top of the carbon electrode due to heat from the bottom of the sample during the hot plate process. When the oven process is used, perovskite forms evenly inside the carbon electrode, as the GBL solvent evaporates extremely slowly because heat is supplied from all directions. The importance of the even formation of perovskite inside the carbon electrode is emphasized, and the feasibility of oven annealing is confirmed for PSCs with carbon electrodes.

  • We made a laser induced grating spectrometer(LIGS) and measured the thermal grating signal generated in a $C_3$ $H_{8}$ flame. The thermal grating was formed in the C7Ha flame with two second-harmonic Nd:YAG pulse laser beams, and an LIGS signal was generated by Bragg scattering of a probe laser beam A $r^+.laser(488 nm). We found the modulation period of the signal depends linearly on the spacing of the grating set in the flame. We determined flame temperature by fitting the modulated signal and soot concentration with signal strength. Using this technique, we also obtained temperature profile and soot-particle distribution in a $C_3$ $H_{8}$ flame .e .

  • This experimental investigation has been conducted to determine the effects of swirling angle and flow patterns on distributions of void fraction, bubble velocity and two-phase pressure drop in a vertical straight tube. Swirling angles of $0^{\circ}$ (non swirling), $30^{\circ}$, and $45^{\circ}$ were tested with air-water two components over a range of superficial air velocities. A transparent lucite tube of 38mm in internal diameter was used for the test section. The void fraction and bubble velocities were measured by means of a optical fiber probe at the upper part of the swirler in the test section. Pressure drops which seem to be closely related with flow patterns and swirling angle were measured by a differential pressure transducer. It is shown that the probability density functions of pressure drop demonstrate peculiar features for both swirling angles and flow patterns, whereas the distributions of void fraction and bubble velocities are parabolic and flat shape in the vicinity of tube center, respectively except bubbly flow in any swirling angle cases, and the void fraction increases with increasing swirling angle around the center of tube.
