Two kinds of temperature monitoring technology have been introduced in this study, which can measure coincidently temperatures at many points along a single length of cable. One is to use a thermal sensor cable comprizing of addressable thermal sensors. The other is to use an optic fiber sensor with Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) system. The differences between two technologies can be summarized as follows: A thermal sensor cable has a concept of "point sensing" that can measure temperature only at a predefined position. The accuracy and resolution of temperature measurement are up to the capability of the individual thermal sensor. On the other hand, an optic fiber sensor has a concept of "distributed sensing" because temperature is measured practically at all points along the fiber optic cable by analysing the intensity of Raman back-scattering when a laser pulse travels along the fiber. Thus, the temperature resolution depends on the measuring distance, measuring time and spatial resolution. The purpose of this study is to investigate the applicability of two different temperature monitoring techniques in technical and economical sense. To this end, diverse experiments with two techniques were performed and two techniques are applied under the same condition. Considering the results, the thermal sensor cable will be well applicable to the assessment of groundwater flow, geothermal distribution and grouting efficiency within about loom distance, and the optic fiber sensor will be suitable for long distance such as pipe line inspection, tunnel fire detection and power line monitoring etc.

We proposed the device to control a computer mouse with only head movements and eye blinks so that disabilities by car or other accidents can use a computer. The mouse position were estimated from a gyro-sensor which can measure head movements, and the mouse events such as click/double click were from opto sensors which can detect the eyes flicker, respectively. The sensor was mounted on the goggle in order not to disturb the visual field. There was no difference in movement speed between ours and a general mouse, but it required 3$\sim$4 more times in the result of the experiment to evaluate spatial movements and events detection of the proposed mouse because of the low accuracy. We could eliminate cumbersome work to periodically remove the accumulated error and intuitively control the mouse using non-linear relative point method with dead zones. Optical sensors are used in the event detection circuitry designed to remove the influence of the ambient light changes, therefore it was not affected in the change of external light source.
A novel fiber optic sensor is demonstrated using a FBG in PM(Polarization-Maintaining) fiber. Gratings have been written in a Bow-Tie type fiber using the phase mask. The operation of the sensor simply involves monitoring back-reflected Bragg wavelengths from the grating. Since PM fiber has two principal semi-axes with two indices of refraction, two Bragg wavelengths were observed. We have observed the position of Bragg wavelengths for PM FBG shifted simultaneously by either applying the longitudinal strain or temperature change. The wavelength sensitivity of 1.2pm/$\mu$$\varepsilon$ about a longitudinal strain and the wavelength sensitivity of 11.4pm/$^{\circ}C$ about a temperature have been experimentally achieved. The wavelength sensitivity of both longitudinal strain and temperature are approximately same with the reported values for the single mode FBG. On the other hand, the change of separation between Bragg wavelengths was observed by the applying transverse stress. We observed that the separation between two Bragg wavelengths is proportional to the applied transverse stress. The wavelength sensitivity of 14.6 pm/N about a transverse stress has been achieved. We have demonstrated PM FBG sensors can measure the transverse stress independently from the effects of temperature.

Map Matching is the method for correcting the current position from dead reckoning in Car Navigation System. In this paper, we proposed the new map matching algorithm that can correct the positioning error caused by sensors and digital map data around the cross road area. To do this, first we set the error boundary of the cross road area by combining the relative error of moving distance and the absolute error of road length, second, we find out the starting point of turning within the determined error boundary of the cross point area, third, we compare the turning angle of the car to the angle of each possible road, and the last, we decide the matched road. We used wheel sensor as a speed sensor and used optical fiber gyro as a directional sensor, and assembled the sensors to the notebook computer. We testified our algorithm by driving the Daejeon area-which is a part of south Korea-as a test area. And we proved the efficiency by doing that.
A robotically assisted field material handling system designed for loading and unloading of a planar pallet with a forklift in unstructured field environment is presented. The system uses combined acoustic/visual sensing data to define the position/orientation of the pallet and to determine the specific locations of the two slots of the pallet, so that the forklift can move close to the slot and engage it for transport. In order to reduce the complexity of the material handling operation, we have developed a method based on the integration of 2-D range data of Poraloid ultrasonic sensor along with 2-D visual data of an optical camera. Data obtained from the two separate sources complements each other and is used in an efficient algorithm to control this robotically assisted field material handling system . Range data obtained from two linear scannings is used to determine the pan and tilt angles of a pallet using least mean square method. Then 2-D visual data is used to determine the swing angle and engagement location of a pallet by using edge detection and Hough transform techniques. The limitations of the pan and tilt orientation to be determined arc discussed. The system developed is evaluated through the hardware and software implementation. The experimental results are presented.
A mechanically induced long-period fiber grating array was fabricated and its transmission characteristics were measured. The grating away consisted of a rubber cover and a 45 cm metal bar with 10 grating groups. Each grating group was composed of 60 gratings. The period of the grating of the grating groups was increased by $10{\mu}m$ increments from $690{\mu}m$ to $780{\mu}m$. The long period fiber grating was induced when the pressure was applied on the long period grating array and the resonant wavelength depended on the position of applied pressure. The experimental results shows that this long period fiber grating away can be used as a various band rejection filter or a fiber optic sensor.
Under the influence of atmospheric turbulence, a star's point image will shake back and forth erratically, and after exposure the originally small star point will spread into a huge spot, which will affect the ground calibration of the star sensor. To analyze the impact of atmospheric turbulence on the positioning accuracy of the star's center of mass, this paper simulates the atmospheric turbulence phase screen using a method based on a sparse spectrum. It is added to the static-star-simulation device to study the transmission characteristics of atmospheric turbulence in star-point simulation, and to analyze the changes in star points under different atmospheric refractive-index structural constants. The simulation results show that the structure function of the atmospheric turbulence phase screen simulated by the sparse spectral method has an average error of 6.8% compared to the theoretical value, while the classical Fourier-transform method can have an error of up to 23% at low frequencies. By including a simulation in which the phase screen would cause errors in the center-of-mass position of the star point, 100 consecutive images are selected and the average drift variance is obtained for each turbulence scenario; The stronger the turbulence, the larger the drift variance. This study can provide a basis for subsequent improvement of the ground-calibration accuracy of a star sensitizer, and for analyzing and evaluating the effect of atmospheric turbulence on the beam.

Mooring systems are among the most important elements employed to control the motion of floating offshore structures on the sea. Considering the use of polymer material, a new method is proposed to address the creep characteristics rather than the method of using a tension load cell for measuring the tension of the mooring line. This study uses a synthetic mooring rope made from a polymer material, which usually consists of three parts: center, eye, and splice, and which makes a joint for two successive ropes. We integrate the optical sensor into the synthetic mooring ropes to measure the rope tension. The different structure of the mooring line in the longitudinal direction can be used to measure the loads with the entire mooring configuration in series, which can be defined as SMART (Smart Mooring and Riser Truncation) mooring. To determine the characteristics of the basic SMART mooring, a SMART mooring with a diameter of 3 mm made of three different polymer materials is observed to change the wavelength that responds as the length changes. By performing the longitudinal tension experiment using three different SMART moorings, it was confirmed that there were linear wavelength changes in the response characteristics of the 3-mm-diameter SMART moorings. A 54-mm-diameter SMART mooring is produced to measure the response of longitudinal tension on the center, eye, and splice of the mooring, and a longitudinal tension of 100 t in step-by-step applied for the Maintained Test and Fatigue Cycle Test is conducted. By performing a longitudinal tension experiment, wavelength changes were detected in the center, eye, and splice position of the SMART moorings. The results obtained from each part of the installed sensors indicated a different strain measurement depending on the position of the SMART moorings. The variation of the strain measurement with the position was more than twice the result of the difference measurement, while the applied external load increased step-by-step. It appears that there is a correlation with an externally generated longitudinal tensional force depending on the cross-sectional area of each part of the SMART mooring.

In this paper, an experimental optical head tracker system is designed and constructed. The system is composed of the infrared LEDs and two infrared CCD cameras to filter out the interference of another light in the limited environment like the cockpit. Then the optical head tracker algorithm is designed by using the feature detection algorithm and the 3D motion estimation algorithm. The feature detection algorithm, used to obtain the 2D position coordinates of the features on the image plane, is implemented by using the thresholding and the masking techniques. The 3D motion estimation algorithm which estimates the motion of a pilot's head is implemented by using the extended Kalman filter (EKF). Also, we used the precise rate table to verify the performance of the experimental optical head tracker system and compared the rotational performance of this system with the inertial sensor.

Optical disk drives read information by replacing a laser beam on the disk track. As information has become larger, the more accurate position control of a laser beam is necessary. In this paper, we report the analysis and fabrication of the micro mirror for optical disk drivers. The mirror was fabricated by using MEMS technology. Especially, the Process using the lapping and polishing step after the bonding of the mirror and electrode plates was employed for the process reliability. The mirror size was $2.5mm{\times}3mm$ and it needed about 35V for displacement of $3.2{\mu}m$.
