  • A refined two-dimensional analysis method, taking into account the crack opening deformation, is proposed for the evaluation of stress distributions in transverse cracked cross-ply laminates. The interlaminar stresses which play an important role in laminate failure are evaluated using the concept of interface layer. A series expansion of the displacements is employed and the thermal residual stresses and Poisson's effects in the laminated are taken into consideration in the formulation. The stress distributions are compared with finite element results. The proposed method represents well the characteristics of the stress distributions. The through-the-thickness variation of the stress distribution is remarkable near the transverse crack due to the crack opening deformation. The interlaminar stresses have significant values at the transverse crack tip and the proposed analysis can be applied as a basis for the prediction of the induced delamination onset by using appropriate failure criteria.

  • For increase of reality in numerical analysis, a blasting vibration waveform obtained from field blast operations has been directly used for input parameters of dynamic analysis in the form of vibration velocity. A numerical model was built considering the geological characteristics of underground limestone opening as well as the mining stages in this opening, and the effect of blast operations on stability of underground limestone opening was investigated by dynamic numerical analysis. The adequacy of applying the real vibration waveform to dynamic analysis has been approved from the preliminary analysis, and the dynamic numerical analysis results show that the continuous mining operation can cause the collapse of roof in openings and the active yield zone around openings. Therefore, the additional reinforcements should be applied for ensuring the stability of underground limestone openings.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the characteristics of the symptoms of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in Korean children and adolescents using representative samples and questionnaires. Methods: A survey involving the interview of 10-, 12-, and 15-year-old children and adolescents regarding the symptoms of TMD was conducted as a part of the 2010 National Oral Health Surveys. The study population included 18,112 subjects (male, 9,734; female, 8,378). The interview involved three questions related to the symptoms of TMD. The prevalence of symptoms of TMD, correlation of the symptoms with sex and age, and the difference in the number of symptoms according to sex and age were analyzed. Results: Among the symptoms of TMD in children and adolescents, the prevalence of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) sounds during mouth opening was 13.0%, while those of TMJ pain and limitation were 3.1% and 4.3%, respectively. While the prevalence of TMJ sounds during mouth opening did not show any statistically significant difference between the sexes, the rates of prevalence of TMJ pain and limitation of mouth opening in were higher in the female subjects than the male (p<0.05). It was also observed that the older the subjects, the higher the prevalence of TMJ sounds, TMJ pain, and limitation of mouth opening (p<0.05). The number of symptoms of TMD was found to be increased among female subjects as well as the older ones (p<0.05). Conclusions: There are variations in the prevalence of symptoms of TMD among Korean children and adolescents according to sex and age, which is consistent with the results of previous studies. It is necessary to conduct a national cohort study to evaluate the risk factors for TMD in children and adolescents.

  • An air circuit breaker (ACB) is an electrical protection device that interrupts abnormal fault currents that result from overloads or short circuits in a low-voltage power distribution line. The ACB consists of a main circuit part for current flow, mechanism part for the opening and closing operation of movable conductors, and arc-extinguishing part for arc extinction during the breaking operation. The driving mechanism of the ACB is a spring energy charging type. The faster the contact opening speed of the movable conductors during the opening process, the better the breaking performance. However, there is a disadvantage that the durability of mechanism decreases in inverse proportion to the use of a spring capable of accumulating high energy to configure the breaking speed faster. Therefore, to simultaneously satisfy the breaking performance and mechanical endurance of the ACB, its driving mechanism must be optimized. In this study, a dynamic model of the ACB was developed using the MDO(Mechanism Dynamics Option) module of CREO, which is widely used in multibody dynamics analysis. To improve the opening velocity, the Taguchi design method was applied to optimize the design parameters of an ACB with many linkages. In addition, to evaluate the improvement in the operating characteristics, the simulation and experimental results were compared with the MDO model and improved prototype sample, respectively.

  • An experimental device was designed to control the opening of a damper via operating the folding blade drive of the device and to control the amount of air flowing through the damper. In addition, an inverter was installed in the blower to control its fan rotation speed and hence the amount of air flowing through the damper. An experimental study was conducted on the opening of the folding blade damper and changes in the rotational speed of the blower. From the results, the theoretical air volume of the folding blade damper and experimental air volume were observed to be in good agreement within an error range of ±3%. As the mass flow rate of the air passing through the folding blade damper increases proportionally with the changes in damper opening and fan rotation speed, the performance of the damper can be controlled proportionally. The mass flow rate was also observed to increase linearly; therefore, the mass flow rate of the air passing through the folding blade damper increases proportionally with changes in the rotation speed of the blower, such that the performance of the damper is proportional to a constant air volume even with varying rotation speeds of the blower.

  • This study analyzes behavior characteristics of illegal urban stall keepers scattered in the metropolitan area and their effects to urban life. The main findings of this study are follows. First, the stall keepers are different in terms of 1) items 2) opening hour and 3) user characteristics depending on locational environment of market boundaries. Second, the stall keepers exit in any time and any place if demand exists. Third, the effects of stall keepers to urban life are twofold ; they facilitate urban life by providing cheap and various commodities/services and they bring about negative effects such as obstacle to traffic flows, waste generation, and so on.

  • This paper presents dynamic modeling and simulation of induction motors. Equivalent circuit parameters measured by do test, no-load test and locked-rotor test were used as the input data for computer simulation. Operating characteristics of an induction motor were predicted by Matlab/simulink when changing load torque, opening and reclosing of phase a of the stator and three-phase fault at machine terminals.

  • This paper aims to figure out properties of housing system under the socialist market economy, which is formed after China's Reform and Opening-up. The characteristics of Chinese housing system under socialist market economy are actually a subtype of capitalist housing model because of the existing clear commodity housing market and the weakness of public land ownership. Furthermore, the government is leading agent of the capitalistic transition and marketization. Also this government-driven marketization has specialty on the feature based on the socialist tradition such as public land ownership.

  • Mechanical face seal installed in boiler feedwater pump prevents leakage of working fluid using thin fluid film between stator and rotor. If the leakage of working fluid exceeds the allowable volume, serious malfunction of boiler feedwater pump will be happen. The thinner fluid film exists between stator and rotor, the less working fluid leaks out. However, if the thickness of fluid film is not enough, the wear of seal face will be increased. And it causes the decrease in life of mechanical face seal. Therefore appropriate design is necessary to maximize the performance and life of mechanical face seal. In this study, numerical analysis using finite volume method was conducted to investigate the static characteristics of wavy mechanical face seals which have 4 different wavy surface profiles on rotor. As a result, opening force, leakage volume of working fluid and friction torque were obtained. For the same minimum film thickness, the static characteristics of mechanical face seal were affected by the wavy surface profile which can change the thickness of working fluid film and pressure distribution.
