  • This work presents numerical results, using OpenFOAM, of the flow in the swirl flow generator test rig developed at Politehnica University of Timisoara, Romania. The work shows results computed by solving the unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes equations. The unsteady method couples the rotating and stationary parts using a sliding grid interface based on a GGI formulation. Turbulence is modeled using the standard k-${\varepsilon}$ model, and block structured wall function ICEM-Hexa meshes are used. The numerical results are validated against experimental LDV results, and against design velocity profiles. The investigation shows that OpenFOAM gives results that are comparable to the experimental and design profiles. The unsteady pressure fluctuations at four different positions in the draft tube is recorded. A Fourier analysis of the numerical results is compared whit that of the experimental values. The amplitude and frequency predicted by the numerical simulation are comparable to those given by the experimental results, though slightly over estimated.

  • High resilience PU foams were prepared with polyether type cell opener. The influences of cell opener concentration on the kinetics, rheology, structural stability morphology and open cell content of the obtained foam were investigated and the role of cell opener during cell opening was determined. And mechanical properties as a function of cell opener concentration were studied. It was observed that urea formation reaction was delayed due to high hydrophilicity of cell opener The decrease of viscosity and the increase of tan $\delta$ were confirmed with increasing cell opener concentration so that the resulted foam had low structural stability and high open cell content. The deterioration of matrix and uniform dispersion of hydrogen-bonded urea in matrix with cell opener concentration was revealed by SEM analysis. As a result, elastic properties of the foam matrix were decreased due to high hydrophilicity of cell opener during the preparation of high resilience polyurethane foam and foam with high open cell content resulted. Hardness, tensile strength, tear strength, elongation of foam were decreased with increasing cell opener concentration.

  • We present a BV I optical photometric study of the old open cluster Ruprecht 6 using the data obtained with the SMARTS 1.0 m telescope at the CTIO, Chile. Its color-magnitude diagrams show the clear existence of the main-sequence stars, whose turn-off point is located around $V{\approx}18.45mag$ and $B-V{\approx}0.85mag$. Three red clump (RC) stars are identified at V = 16.00 mag, I = 14.41 mag and B - V = 1.35 mag. From the mean $K_s-band$ magnitude of RC stars ($K_s=12.39{\pm}0.21mag$) in Ruprecht 6 from 2MASS photometry and the known absolute magnitudes of the RC stars ($M_{K_S}=-1.595{\pm}0.025mag$), we obtain the distance modulus to Ruprecht 6 of $(m-M)_0=13.84{\pm}0.21mag$ ($d=5.86{\pm}0.60kpc$). From the ($J-K_s$) and (B - V ) colors of the RC stars, comparison of the (B - V ) and (V - I) colors of the bright stars in Ruprecht 6 with those of the intrinsic colors of dwarf and giant stars, and the PARSEC isochrone fittings, we derive the reddening values of E(B - V ) = 0.42 mag and E(V - I) = 0.60 mag. Using the PARSEC isochrone fittings onto the color-magnitude diagrams, we estimate the age and metallicity to be: $log(t)=9.50{\pm}0.10(t=3.16{\pm}0.82Gyr)$ and $[Fe/H]=-0.42{\pm}0.04dex$. We present the Galactocentric radial metallicity gradient analysis for old (age > 1 Gyr) open clusters of the Dias et al. catalog, which likely follow a single relation of $[Fe/H]=(-0.034{\pm}0.007)R_{GC}+(0.190{\pm}0.080)$ (rms = 0.201) for the whole radial range or a dual relation of $[Fe/H]=(-0.077{\pm}0.017)R_{GC}+(0.609{\pm}0.161)$ (rms = 0.152) and constant ([Fe/H] ~ -0.3 dex) value, inside and outside of RGC ~ 12 kpc, respectively. The metallicity and Galactocentric radius ($13.28{\pm}0.54kpc$) of Ruprecht 6 obtained in this study seem to be consistent with both of the relations.

  • From July 1983 to December 1992, 145 patients with mitral valvular disease underwent open heart surgery at Chonbuk National University Hospital. Of these patients, 89 patients[61.4%] required mitral valve replacement. 56 patients [38.6 %] had mitral valve repair. There were 32 women and 24 men and the mean age was 34.3 years[range 6 years to 62 years].There were 23 cases of pure mitral stenosis, 19 cases of mitral regurgitation and 14 cases of mixedmitral valvular disease. The mean duration of symptom was 4.53 years and mean mitral valvularorifice diameter[in cases of pure stenosis and mixed mitral valvular lesion] was 0.96 cm. According to the NYHA classification, the distribution of patients preoperatively was as follows; class IIa, 15 patients; class lib, 17 patients; class III, 22 patients; class IV, 2 patients. Four patients[7%] had an embolic history preoperatively. 24 patients[ 43 %] were in atrial fibrillation. In cases of pure mitral stenosis, the technique used included open mitral commissurotomy[21atients], open mitral commissurotomy with mitral annuloplasty[2 patients]. In mixed mitral valvular disease, open mitral commissurotomy[ll patients] and open mitral commissurotomy with mitral annuloplasty[l patient] were performed. In cases of mitral regurgitation, mitral annuloplasty[5 patients], mitral valvuloplasty[6 patients], mitral annuloplasty with valvuloplasty [3 patients] and ring annuloplasty [5 patients] were performed. There was one perioperative death related to acute renal failure and sepsis. One late death was occurred related to heart failure after 10 months postoperatively. One patient required reoperation due to restenosis and no embolic episode was occured. After operation, 34 patients were in NYHA functional class I, 20 patients were in class IIa.

  • We derive a linear matrix inequality(LMI) condition guaranteeing that any invariant zeros of a triple (A, B, C) lie in the open left half plane of the complex plane, i.e. $C(sI-A)^{-1}B$ is minimum phase. The LMI condition is equivalent to a certain constrained Lyapunov matrix equation which can be found in many results relating to stability analysis or control design. We show that the LMI condition can be used to simplify various control engineering problems such as a dynamic output feedback control problem, a variable structure static output feedback control problem, and a nonlinear system observer design problem. Finally, we give some numerical examples.

  • Let $\mathcal{B}$ be a Banach space of analytic functions defined on the open unit disk. Assume S is a bounded operator defined on $\mathcal{B}$ such that S is in the commutant of $M_zn$ or $SM_zn=-M_znS$ for some positive integer n. We give necessary and sufficient condition between compactness of $SM_z+cM_zS$ where c = 1, -1, i, -i, and the structure of S. Also we characterize the commutant of $M_zn$ for some positive integer n.

  • We let (M,g) be a noncompact complete Riemannina manifold of dimension $n \geq 3$ with finite volume and positive scalar curvature. We show the existence of a conformal metric with constant positive scalar curvature on (M,g) by gluing solutions of Yamabe equation on each compact subsets $K_i$ with $\cup K_i = M$ .

  • We let (M,g) be a noncompact complete Riemannian manifold of dimension n $\geq$ 3 with scalar curvatue S, which is close to -1. We show the existence of a conformal metric $\bar{g}$, near to g, whose scalar curvature $\bar{S}$ = -1 by gluing solutions of the corresponding partial differential equation on each bounded subsets $K_i$ with ${\bigcup}K_i$ = M.

  • Since the discovery of quasars about a half century ago, it has been an open question what triggers supermassive black holes at the center of galaxies. I will talk about AGNs and their host galaxies in the context of galaxy assembly and evolution. In particular, I will focus on the fundamental, but unanswered question whether black holes play a key role in galaxy evolution from my personal perspective.

  • This study was planned to see whether the Panax Ginseng root has any influence upon the emotionality in rats exposed to a novel open-field and induced by a grid shock. Sixty four male albino rats whose body weight ranged from 130 to 180 gm were used. They were divided into four groups, i.e., placebo control group, 5mg/kg Ginseng ext. group, 10mg/kg Ginseng ext. group, and 20mg/kg Ginseng ext. group. Sixteen rats were subjected in each group. Open-field activity was measured in a $2.20m\;{\times}\;2.20m$ open-field that was divided into 15cm squares. Four novel objects and food pellets were put with an equal distance in the open-field. Locomotion was recorded by entering the number of squares traversed for 4 min. and behaviors which were shown at the 10-sec. period were checked by a modified Jarrad and Bunnel's observation procedure. Sensitivity to the grid shock was measured in a compartment of shuttle box. 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70 volt ac. 2 sec., electric shock were delivered in each subject by the grid to animal's feet. Flinch, vocalization and jumping responses were rated in each shock level. The results obtained were as follows: 1.) 5mg/kg and 10mg/kg Ginseng ext. groups were tended to increase the ambulation and exploration compared with placebo control. 2.) All Ginseng extract groups were defecated significantly less often than placebo control in the open-field and shock situation. 3.) Thresholds to the electric shock were tended to elevate in all Ginseng groups. 4.) These results suggest that Ginseng extract has a stimulant action in open-field and a tranqulizing action in feared situation.
