This research is aimed at the development of a software that predicts the surface temperature profiles of three-dimensional objects on the ground considering the spectral solar radiation through the atmosphere. The thermal modelling is essential for identifying the objects on the scenes obtained from the satellites. And the temperature distribution on the objects is necessary to obtain their infrared images in contrast to the background. We developed a software that could be used to model the thermal problems of the ground objects irradiated by the spectral solar radiation. This software can be used to handle the conduction within the object as a one-dimensional mode into the depth or as a three-dimensional mode through the media. LOWTRAN7 is used to model the spectral solar radiation including the direct and diffuse solar radiances. In this paper, temperature distributions on the objects obtained by using the one-dimensional and the three-dimensional thermal models are compared with each other to examine the applicability of the relatively easy-to-apply one-dimensional model.
Modelling for failures is important for reliability analysis since failures of products such as automobiles occur as both time and usage progress and the results from the proper analysis of the two-dimensional data can be used for establishing warranty assurance policy. Hence, in this paper general issues which concern modelling failures are discussed, and both one-dimensional approaches and two-dimensional approaches to two-dimensional data are investigated. Finally non-parametric approaches to two-dimensional data are presented as a means of exploratory data analyses.
The convergence rate of a numerical procedure based on Schwarz Alternating Method(SAM) for solving elliptic boundary value problems depends on the selection of the interface conditions applied on the interior boundaries of the overlapping subdomains. It has been observed that the mixed interface condition, controlled by a parameter, can optimize SAM's convergence rate. In [8], one introduced the two-layer multi-parameterized SAM and determined the optimal values of the multi-parameters to produce the best convergence rate for one-dimensional elliptic boundary value problems. In this paper, we present a method which utilizes the one-dimensional result to get the optimal convergence rate for the two-dimensional problem.
In this paper we present the aspect of inertial oscillation typically observed in the spin-up of fluids at low Rossby numbers in a circular cylinder. Numerical computations for the quasi three-dimensional equation as well as one-dimensional equation are performed to estimate the predictability of the one-dimensional equation with Ekman pumping/suction models. It is assumed that the discrepancy between the two results may be attributed to the inertial oscillation The detailed analysis to the numerical results reveals that the axial plane is dominated by a comparatively strong oscillatory flows caused by the inertial oscillation. In view of the fact that the time-averaged flow field however agrees to the Taylor-Proudman theorem, it is recommended that further analysis is needed to obtain an improved one-dimensional model like the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equation for turbulent flows.
A nodal transport method based on the F$_{N}$ method is developed for the transport calculation in x- y geometry and tested for benchmark problems. Using transverse integration, the two-dimensional transport equation is converted to one-dimensional equations for x, y-directions and the one-dimensional equations are integrated over azimuthal angle. With proper approximations for the transverse leakage, the one-dimensional equations are discretized by using the F$_{N}$ method without truncation error. At present, isotropic approximation of the transverse with a quadratic or flat shape in spatial variable is tested.ted.
A numerical model is investigated to predict a behavior of the gaseous volatile organic compounds and a subsurface contamination caused by them in the unsaturated zone. Two dimensional advective-dispersion equation caused by a density difference and two dimensional diffusion equation are computed by a finite difference method in the numerical model. A laboratory experiment is also carried out to compare the results of the numerical model. The dimensions of the experimental plume are 1.2m in length, 0.5m in height, and 0.05m in thickness. In comparing the result of 2 methods used in the numerical model with the one of the experiment respectively, the one of the advective-dispersion equation shows better than the one the diffusion equation.
In the vibration target localization algorithms based on time difference of arrival (TDOA), Fang algorithm is often used in practice because of its simple calculation. However, when the delay estimation error is large, the localization equation of Fang algorithm has no solution. In order to solve this problem, one dimensional search location algorithm based on TDOA is proposed in this paper. The concept of search is introduced in the algorithm. The distance d1 between any single sensor and the vibration target is considered as a search variable. The vibration target location is searched by changing the value of d1 in the two-dimensional plane. The experiment results show that the proposed algorithm is superior to traditional methods in localization accuracy.
In this paper, an asymptotic method is employed to formulate nano- or micro-beams based on strain gradient elasticity. Although a basic theory for the strain gradient elasticity has been well established in literature, a systematic approach is relatively rare because of its complexity and ambiguity of higher-order elasticity coefficients. In order to systematically identify the strain gradient effect, an asymptotic approach is adopted by introducing the small parameter which represents the beam geometric slenderness and/or the internal atomistic characteristic. The approach allows us to systematically split the two-dimensional strain gradient elasticity into the microscopic one-dimensional through-the-thickness analysis and the macroscopic one-dimensional beam analysis. The first-order beam problem turns out to be different from the classical elasticity in terms of the bending stiffness, which comes from the through-the-thickness strain gradient effect. This subsequently affects the second-order transverse shear stress in which the surface shear stress exists. It is demonstrated that a careful derivation of a first strain gradient elasticity embraces "Gurtin-Murdoch traction" as the surface effect of a one-dimensional Euler-Bernoulli-like beam model.
Dislocations are basic crystal defects and represent one-dimensional native nanostructures embedded in a perfect crystalline matrix. Their structure is predefined by crystal symmetry. Two-dimensional, self-organized arrays of such nanostructures are realized reproducibly using specific preparation conditions (semiconductor wafer direct bonding). This technique allows separating dislocations up to a few hundred nanometers which enables electrical measurements of only a few, or, in the ideal case, of an individual dislocation. Electrical properties of dislocations in silicon were measured using MOSFETs as test structures. It is shown that an increase of the drain current results for nMOSFETs which is caused by a high concentration of electrons on dislocations in p-type material. The number of electrons on a dislocation is estimated from device simulations. This leads to the conclusion that metallic-like conduction exists along dislocations in this material caused by a one-dimensional carrier confinement. On the other hand, measurements of pMOSFETs prepared in n-type silicon proved the dominant transport of holes along dislocations. The experimentally measured increase of the drain current, however, is here not only caused by an higher hole concentration on these defects but also by an increasing hole mobility along dislocations. All the data proved for the first time the ambipolar behavior of dislocations in silicon. Dislocations in p-type Si form efficient one-dimensional channels for electrons, while dislocations in n-type material cause one-dimensional channels for holes.
It is important to accurately predict the temperature and density distributions in large stratified enclosures both for design optimization and accident analysis. Current reactor system analysis codes only provide lumped-volume based models that can give very approximate results. Previous scaling analysis has shown that stratified mixing processes in large stably stratified enclosures can be described using one-dimensional differential equations, with the vertical transport by jets modeled using integral techniques. This allows very large reductions in computational effort compared to three-dimensional CFD simulation. The BMIX++ (Berkeley mechanistic MIXing code in C++) code was developed to implement such ideas. This paper summarizes major models for the BMIX++ code, presents the two-plume mixing experiment simulation as one validation example, and describes the codes' application to the liquid salt buffer pool system in the AHTR (Advanced High Temperature Reactor) design. Three design options have been simulated and they exhibit significantly different stratification patterns. One of design options shows the mildest thermal stratification and is identified as the best design option. This application shows that the BMIX++ code has capability to provide the reactor designers with insights to understand complex mixing behavior with mechanistic methods. Similar analysis is possible for liquid-metal cooled reactors.
