First report of cross-species transmission of deer hepatitis E virus to a guanaco in Korea

  • The hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a leading causative agent of acute hepatitis in humans. Zoonotic HEV strains have been isolated from several animal species, including pigs. New HEV variants have been recently isolated from camels in the Middle East. In the present study, fecal samples from fallow deer, formosan deer, alpaca, and guanaco were analyzed for the detection of HEV. One HEV strain was detected from guanaco, a species of camelids. The nucleotide sequence of guanaco HEV was identical to those of deer HEV-3 strains, which implied the cross-species transmission of HEV-3 from deer to guanaco.

  • A global increase in fish consumption has led to a rapid expansion of aquaculture production, which has been linked to enhancing the spread of infectious diseases. Viral diseases can cause high mortality in many cultured fish species, posing a serious threat to the aquaculture industry. Infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHNV) is one of the primary threats to aquacultured salmonid species, causing huge economic losses. Since the first report in cultured sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka during the 1950s in North America, IHNV has spread to other regions, including Europe, Asia, South America, and Africa by transportation of infected fish and eggs, causing disease and increasing mortality in a wide variety of salmonid species. Here, we review existing information relevant to IHNV: its phylogenetic characteristics, origin, infection history, virulence determinants, susceptible hosts, vectors, and vaccine development. This review also addresses a possible cross-species transmission of IHNV to a new host, olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus, a cultured fish of economic importance in East Asian countries.

Increasing Splicing Site Prediction by Training Gene Set Based on Species

  • Biological data have been increased exponentially in recent years, and analyzing these data using data mining tools has become one of the major issues in the bioinformatics research community. This paper focuses on the protein construction process in higher organisms where the deoxyribonucleic acid, or DNA, sequence is filtered. In the process, "unmeaningful" DNA sub-sequences (called introns) are removed, and their meaningful counterparts (called exons) are retained. Accurate recognition of the boundaries between these two classes of sub-sequences, however, is known to be a difficult problem. Conventional approaches for recognizing these boundaries have sought for solely enhancing machine learning techniques, while inherent nature of the data themselves has been overlooked. In this paper we present an approach which makes use of the data attributes inherent to species in order to increase the accuracy of the boundary recognition. For experimentation, we have taken the data sets for four different species from the University of California Santa Cruz (UCSC) data repository, divided the data sets based on the species types, then trained a preprocessed version of the data sets on neural network(NN)-based and support vector machine(SVM)-based classifiers. As a result, we have observed that each species has its own specific features related to the splice sites, and that it implies there are related distances among species. To conclude, dividing the training data set based on species would increase the accuracy of predicting splicing junction and propose new insight to the biological research.

광릉수목원의 어류상 및 어류 군집 (The Fish Fauna and Community of Gwangneung Arboretum)

  • 2007년 4월부터 2007년 10월까지 광릉수목원에서 어류군집을 조사하였다. 출현한 어종은 총 9과 22종 1,272개체였고 출현한 어종 중 멸종위기야생동 식물에 속하는 종은 Cottus koreanus 1종이었다. 국외에서 도입된 외래종은 Micropterus salmoides 1종이었고 출현한 어종 중 한반도고유종에 속하는 종은 9종 (종구성비 : 40.9%)이었다. 우점종은 Rhynchocypris oxycephalus (St. 1)와 Zacco platypus (St. 2${\sim}$7) 이었다. 종다양도 지수, 균등도지수 및 종풍부도 지수로 보면 St. 3에서 비교적 안정적인 어류 군집을 형성하고 었었다. Silurus microdorsalis, Cottus koreanus, Odontobutis platycephala 등은 왕숙천수계에서 광릉수목원 내 봉선사천에 극한되어 서식하는 것으로 생각된다. 1932년 조사와 비교 시 17종이 출현하지 않았고 7종이 새로 추가되었다. Hemibarbus mylodon, Acheilognathus signifer, Zacco koreanus 등은 왕숙천 수계 내에서 소멸된 것으로 생각되며 Acheilognathus signifer와 Zacco koreanus는 복원 대상종으로 생각된다.

Re-identification of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides Species Complex Isolates in Korea and Their Host Plants

  • The Colletotrichum gloeosporioides species complex includes many phytopathogenic species, causing anthracnose disease on a wide range of host plants and appearing to be globally distributed. Seventy-one Colletotrichum isolates in the complex from different plants and geographic regions in Korea were preserved in the Korean Agricultural Culture Collection (KACC). Most of them had been identified based on hosts and morphological features, this could lead to inaccurate species names. Therefore, the KACC isolates were re-identified using DNA sequence analyses of six loci, comprising internal transcribed spacer, gapdh, chs-1, his3, act, and tub2 in this study. Based on the combined phylogenetic analysis, KACC strains were assigned to 12 known species and three new species candidates. The detected species are C. siamense (n = 20), C. fructicola (n = 19), C. gloeosporioides (n = 9), C. aenigma (n = 5), C. camelliae (n = 3), C. temperatum (n = 3), C. musae (n = 2), C. theobromicola (n = 2), C. viniferum (n = 2), C. alatae (n = 1), C. jiangxiense (n = 1), and C. yulongense (n = 1). Of these, C. jiangxiense, C. temperatum, C. theobromicola and C. yulongense are unrecorded species in Korea. Host plant comparisons showed that 27 fungus-host associations are newly reported in the country. However, plant-fungus interactions need to be investigated by pathogenicity tests.

Echinoderm Fauna of Chuuk, The Federated States of Micronesia

  • Micronesia is an island nation located north of Papua New Guinea in the Pacific Ocean. A survey was conducted on Chuuk, which is one of the four main islands of Micronesia, from 11-25 Nov 2012. Echinoderms collected at one intertidal area as well as at 16 SCUBA diving points of 10-40 m depths in the subtidal zone were identified based on morphological characteristics. In total, 35 species from 165 individuals were identified: two crinoids, eight asteroids, four ophiuroids, seven echinoids, and 14 holothuroids. Among them, one asteroid, one ophiuroid, one echinoid, and two holothuroids were newly recorded from Micronesia.

Two new free-living marine nematodes of the genus Belbolla (Nematoda, Enoplida, Enchelidiidae) from a shallow subtidal benthic habitat of the outermost islands of Korea

  • Two new free-living marine nematodes of the genus Belbolla Andrássy, 1973 belonging to family Enchelidiidae are newly described based on specimens obtained from a shallow subtidal sediment of the western and southern outermost islands of Korea. Belbolla koreensis sp. nov. differs from other species of the genus by the combination of the following characteristics: longer body length (3,080-3,462 ㎛ long), eight oesophageal bulbs in the posterior region of pharynx, well-developed two winged precloacal supplements (anterior precloacal supplement slightly longer than posterior one: 47-59 ㎛ vs. 43-46 ㎛ long), strongly arcuated, very thick, L-shaped spicule (122-127 ㎛ long, 1.7-1.9 anal body diameter(a.b.d.) long) with three separated blunt distal tips, and well-developed relatively long cylindrical shaped gubernacular apophysis with blunt teeth covering two thirds of the dorsal margin (57-58 ㎛ long, 0.8-0.9 a.b.d. long). Belbolla hoonsooi sp. nov. is characterized by the following combination of characteristics: longer body length (3,494 ㎛ long), eight oesophageal bulbs in the posterior region of pharynx, well-developed two winged precloacal supplements (anterior precloacal supplement slightly longer than posterior one: 43 ㎛ vs. 36 ㎛ long), strongly arcuated, L-shaped spicule (119 ㎛ long, 1.5 a.b.d. long) with three separated blunt distal tip, and well-developed relatively long inverted triangle shaped gubernacular apophysis with blunt teeth covering half of the dorsal margin (45 ㎛ long, 0.6 a.b.d. long). Detailed morphological characteristics and illustrations of two new Belbolla nematodes from the Korean seawaters were provided by differential interference contrast microscopy. Comparative tables on biogeographical and morphological characteristics of Belbolla species are also provided herein.

균류의 새로운 명명 규약과 일균일명 체계로의 전환 (Introductions of the New Code of Fungal Nomenclature and Recent Trends in Transition into One Fungus/One Name System)

  • 곰팡이의 명명을 규정하는 규약이 '국제식물명명규약(International Code of Botanical Nomenclature, ICBN)'에서 '국제 조류, 균류, 식물 명명 규약(International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi and plants, ICN)'으로 바뀌게 되었다(2011.7). ICBN에서 ICN으로 바뀌게 되면서 많은 변화가 있지만 가장 큰 변화는 곰팡이의 이중명명을 더 이상 허용하지 않는다(2013. 1)는 것이다. 새로운 이름을 가질 곰팡이는 이 규칙에 따라 명명하면 되지만 문제는 2013년 1월 1일 이전에 완전세대와 불완전 세대에 근거하여 두 개의 이름을 이미 가지고 있는 10,000-12,000개의 곰팡이의 경우이다. 우선 ICN에는 이에 대한 혼란을 막기 위해서 2013년 1월 1일 전에 이전의 명명규약에 의하여 보고된 학명은 유효성과 합법성을 유지한 채 우선권의 원칙에 따라 서로 경쟁한다는 조항을 추가하였다. 하지만 결국은 세대에 관계없이 하나의 곰팡이 이름을 사용해야 할 것이며 이에 따라 세계 균학계는 곰팡이 분야별 작업반 또는 위원회를 결성하는 등 바쁘게 움직이고 있다. 일균일명 체계로의 전환에 대한 배경, 경과, 그리고 향후 전망에 대하여 상술하였다. 이 외에도 전자출판이 유효출판으로 인정(2012.1)되게 되었고, 영어신종기술도 정당출판으로 인정되게 되었으며(2012. 1), 또한 신종의 학명과 필수정보를 공인정보저장소에 등록하는 것이 의무화 된다(2013. 1). 곰팡이의 새로운 명명규약과 일균일명 체계로의 전환에 대한 국제 균학계의 움직임을 국내에 한글로 쉽게 소개하였다.

  • 43종 식물체 추출물의 6종 해충(벼멸구, 배추좀나방, 담배거세미나방, 복숭아혹진딧물, 쌀바구미, 독일바퀴)에 대한 살충활성 및 응애에 대한 살비활성을 조사하였다. 은행잎 메탄올 추출물은 벼멸구에 대해서만 선택적으로 강한 살충활성을 보인 반면, 나한백의 일종인 Thujopsis dolabrata var. hondai 톱밥의 수증기증류물은 모든 공시충에 대해 높은 살충활성을 보였다. 소나무잎 메탄올 추출물과 T. dolabrata var. hondai 톱밥의 수증기증류물은 점박이응애에 대해 강한 살비활성을 나타내었다.

cpDNA와 ITS 염기변이에 근거한 신품종 생장알로에 유전적 상관관계 (Genetic relationship of Aloe vera 'Saengjang', a new forma, based on cpDNA and ITS sequence variation)

  • 본 연구는 3개의 색소체 matK, trnL-F, rbcL DNA 염기서열과 1개의 핵 ITS DNA 염기서열을 근거로 한국산 Aloe 3종 A. arborescens, A. vera 그리고 A. saponaria 등과 하나의 변이종 알로에의 유전적 상관관계를 알고자 수행되었다. 전체 2,420 bp 서열이 증폭되었다. 두 개의 삽인-결실(indel)이 trnL 지역에서 확인되었고, 또한 여러 개의 종 특이적인 염기자위가 전체 29개의 최소변이 정보지역(parsimonious informative site)에서 확인되었다. 조사된 한국산 4 종간에는 148 염기변이 지역이 있었으며, 세계산 Aloe 종들을 포함한 비교해서는 170개의 변이지역 중 75개의 최소변이 지역이 확인되었다. UPGMA를 이용한 phenogram에서 새로운 변이종 알로에는 A. vera와 가장 가깝게 유집되었다. 변이종 알로에는 아직까지 보고된 어떤 종류의 Aloe속내 종과 형태적 및 유전적으로 일치하지 않았다. 조사된 알로에 종들의 유집분석 결과는 기존의 연구결과와 일치하였다.
