  • We propose a new data carousel scheduling algorithm for on-demand data broadcasting in DMB. The server divides data items into two sets named hot and cold, according to request statistics from clients. When constructing a data carousel, hot items are placed periodically with their upper limit of broadcasting frequency. If there are empty slots after placing hot items, cold items with high request ratio are placed until the carousel is full. A cold item is broadcast only once in the caroulsel. For the response on clients' requests, our proposed scheme is shown to have high success ratio with short waiting time.

  • In this paper, a VOD(Video -on-Demand) system is implemented using LAN(Local Area Network). The use of LAN causes the time-delay problem due to its narrow channel limitation, as a result, the service using the conventional LAN used not to be popular. In this paper, to solve these problems, we develop the modified topology, the selection methodology of the network equipment, and the dedicated(improved) protocol. Consequently, we can serve at most 3 or 4 clients at the same time, and we conclude it is necessary to optimize the network buffer size depending on the size of video data.

  • As the speed of networks that subscribers can use has greatly increased, demand for high-quality broadcast content, such as from Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) and Video on Demand (VoD), is likewise increasing. Therefore, while broadcasters are increasing content and channels, they are striving to improve consumer quality of experience (QoE) to differentiate themselves from competitors, including by producing higher physical-quality content. Recently, subjective measurement methods have been internationally standardized as the most reliable approach for measuring and evaluating IPTV QoE. However, a majority of these methods are performed in experimental environments and are based on the extremely brief viewing period of approximately ten seconds using original reference videos. It is actually difficult to apply standard evaluation methods based on a ten-second viewing interval to assess real broadcast watching of IPTV or other services that involve a longer time (i.e., more than thirty minutes). In this paper, we therefore propose a method that accommodates actual viewing environments. Using the mean opinion score, we experimentally analyze the effects of evaluation interval changes under actual conditions in which IPTV service is provided. In addition, we propose improvements by applying the results into actual live broadcast IPTV service and by analyzing consumer service QoE.

  • With the discontinuation of analog broadcasting in 2012, the cable broadcasters are investing in the conversion to DCATV (Digital Cable TV). DCATV is providing various broadcast of high quality to audiences through paid broadcasting called PPV (Pay Per View). Such services are using various kinds of CASs (Conditional Access System) in order to verify the viewing rights of subscriber. In addition, to respond to the fast changing environment of digital broadcast, not only simple digitalization of broadcast but also services such as PVR (Personal Video Recorder) and VOD (Video On Demand) are provided to subscribers. Because these additional services have many difficult areas to cover with traditional CAS alone, a new plan has become necessary. With the improvement of related regulations in 2008, the test service of IPTV (Internet Protocol TV) which is a broadcast service through the internet started. Because like DCATV, IPTV also sets the real time broadcast and the VOD service as the basic services, the use of appropriate CAS is required. In this study, the CASs for DCATV and IPTV undergo comparative analysis, and the development direction which will benefit both subscribers and broadcasting companies is suggested.

  • MPEG-2 transcoding scheme is proposed as scalable transmission system for a video-on-demand system is described. In this system video contents encoded by MPEG-2 are transmitted to receiver terminals via communication lines that have different bit rate. A transcoding technique that directly converts a bit stream encoded by MPEG-2 into a lower coding rate stream without decoding is proposed. The transcoder called Trampeg includes size reduction and frame drop approach. The experimental results show that an MPEG-2 stream of 0 Mbps is able to be transcoded into a stream of 1.5 Mbps-300 Kbps.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel geographical on-demand routing protocol for a mobile ad-hoc network (MANET) that resolves the broadcast storm problem of ad-hoc on-demand distance vector (AODV) routing protocol. The candidates relaying route request (RREQ) packet are geographically restricted by the locations of the destination and a (RREQ sender. Then, the duplicate RREQs, which are generally discarded in the protocols that follow the principle of the AODV, are parsed to avoid redundant RREQ rebroadcasts and to perform passive acknowledgement with respect to a RREQ rebroadcast. The proposed routing protocol is implemented by modifying the source code of the AODV in QualNet. It is shown through QualNet simulations that the proposed routing protocol significantly improves the packet delivery ratio and the latency of the AODV in high-density and heavy traffic network scenarios.

  • As the wireless mobile communication is being widespread, mobile technologies will have important roles in the communication with the explosive growth of demanding for wireless portable devices. Among the mobile technologies, a great deal of interest has been taken in mobile ad hoc network (MANET), which is a collection of wireless mobile nodes forming a temporary network without the aid of stationary infrastructure in recent. Furthermore, considering characteristic of ad hoc networks, the design of efficient routing protocols is an important issue. In recent years, on-demand protocols among routing protocols have noticed because of the low routing overhead. However, on-demand protocols suffer from production of the enormous query Packets by broadcasting in order to setup routes, that is, a flooding scheme. The flooding scheme is very costly and results in serious problem, which we refer as the broadcast storm problem. In this paper, we propose a Dynamic Adaptation Query flooding Using Neighbor Topology (NT-DAQ) scheme, in order to resolve the broadcast storm Problem. When a route discovery is in progress, each mobile node decides on the basis of neighbor topology information whether discovery process participates or not. Therefore, our proposed scheme enables to improve network performance in which minimize the number of query rackets. We evaluate the efficiency of our proposed scheme through simulation.
