The liming effect of the four different siliceous materials with six grades of fineness were investigated in comparison with limestone under the submerged condition for three months, and the alkalinity extracted by 0.07N-EDTA and N-NaOAc solutions were determined to evaluate the neutralizing power of these materials. 1. Fused phosphate took 20 days with finer particles than 60 mesh (Tyler), 34 days with -40+48 mesh particles and 84 days with -20+25 mesh particles to reach the pH 5.5 from pH 4.0 of initial soil pH. These adjusted soil acidities were less 1.0-0.5 unit of pH compared with the pH of particles of limestone. 2. The basic reduction furnace slag increased the pH value to 5.5 in the finer particles than 100 mesh, but the other coarse particles appeared to have slow changes of the soil acidity to pH 4.5-4.7 for the three months. Wollastonite didn't affect the increase of soil pH in coarser particles than 25 mesh whereas other finer particles increased upto pH 4.5-5.0. Blast furnace slag is definitely slower through all sizes of particles. 3. In the relationship between the adjusted soil acidities and alkalinities dissolved in EDTA and NaOAc solution, NaOAc-alkalinity agreed quite closely to the activity of neutralizing value of silicates and limestone containing fineness of particles. The correlation coefficients between the amended soil acidities and NaOAc-alkalinities were stabilized with high significance at the 8 days after water logging and 16 days with the EDTA-alkalinities.
A field experiment was conducted in a moderately well drained paddy field doveloped in a narrow strip of a valley in order to observe changes of potassium requirement in paddy production when lime is applied. The results obtained are as follows; 1. The response of paddy to potassium (K) and lime (L) is represented mathematically as follow; $Y=462.78+11.582K-0.058L-0.768K^2-0.000015L^2+0.2204KL$. It is considered that the increase of potassium reqirement when slaked lime is applied, is partially due to the increased growth of plant accomplished by the improvement of soil conditions such as the reduction of respiration inhibitors and cationic balance in soil solution. 2. An economic analysis of the use of potassium and slaked lime applying the costs, 80 won per kg of paddy, 19 won per kg of potassium and 4 won per kg of slaked lime to the response function above, showed that the slaked lime without potssium brought a large loss, whereas the use of the lime together with potassium increased the profit remarkably. The profit increased when 10kg of potassium per 10 a is applied in addition to 200kg slaked limn, per 10kg is amounted 4,685 won. 3. A linear relationship between the economic optimum dose of potassium (y) and the amount of slaked lime (x) in paddy production, is obtained as follow; $$y=7.48+\frac{2.77}{200}x$$ It is, however, considered that the amount of potassium to he used might differ according to the soil conditions such as the potassium content and cation exchange capicity of the soil.
Rice yield and grain guality were investigated with treatments of silicate fertilizer, straw compost and NPK fertilizer in the paddy soil of silty clay loam from 1975 to 2001. Rice yield of the treatments of silicate fertilizer. $1,500kg\;ha^{-1}$ and straw compost $10,00kg\;ha^{-1}$ were increased by 15%, 10%, respectively, for 27years average yield in comparison with NPK plot. In the plots of NPK+silicate fertilizer $1,500kg\;ha^{-1}$, NPK+silicate fertilizer $2,500kg\;ha^{-1}$, taste value(Toyo instrument) of cooked rice and quality assessment were higher than those in NPK control plot and NPK+straw compost $10,000kg\;ha^{-1}$ plot, but the contents of crude protein, amylose of milled rice grain were lower than those in other treated plots. Nitrogen and phosphorous contents of rice plant were lower, but $SiO_2$ content were higher in the treatment of silicate ferti lizer 1,500, $2,500kg\;ha^{-1}$ than straw compost $10,000kg\;ha^{-1}$ plot. Rice quality assessment was positively correlated with taste value, but it was negatively correlated with crude protein and amylose content of milled rice grain. Ratios of Mg/N, $Mg/N{\cdot}K_2O$, $SiO_2/N$, $SiO_2/P_2O_5$ and $SiO_2/K_2O$ were positively correlated with taste value and quality assessment of rice grain, but negatively correlated with crude protein, amylose and fatty acid content. In soil chemical characteristics related with rice quality after experiment in 2001, soil pH and $SiO_2$ content were positively correlated with taste value and quality assessment of rice grain, but contents of soil $P_2O_5$, ex-K were negatively correlated with them.
In order to find out effects of the generative power of silk worm moth which have been brought up in the high temperature accommodation at their pupa stage. For this specific study, 9 different kinds of male silk worms have been selected as specimen. All those specimen were brought up in the normal temperature at their larvae stage and after the pupation period they have been accommodated in the condition of high temperature for a certain length in accordance with the study programme. Afterwards, those mlae specimen were copulated with Suwon jam 103${\times}$104 which were all brought up in normal conditions. This study was carried out to find the copulation function as well as the ratio of unfertilized eggs(male sterility test). Results of study have been revealed as follows: 1) Although some differences were observed, male pura which have been brought up in the condition of high temperature shown the low rate of unfertilized eggs rather than those were brought up in the normal conpition. 2) In this group the eclosion(emergency) has been found to be poor rather, than those specimen brought up in normal conditions. 3) The copulation function of Moran, Daedong, J124 and C108 specimen were found to be poor than those of Suwon jam. 4) Fertility rate of Moran, Daedong, J124 and C108 was found to be around 65%. This figure is rather lower than what we normally expect. 5) Unfertilized egg ratio of Moran, Daedong and C108 were found to be around 20% if they were brought up in the condition of high temperature for one day from the time of pupation: 40% at 2 days, and 70% at 3 days duration. More than 3 days treatment has shown no progress in the unfertilized egg ratio. 6) One day's treatment for the pupa at the later stage has shown the unfertilized egg ratio of about 10%; 20% at 2 day's treatment, 35% at 3 day's treatment, 40-60% at 4 day's treatment, more than 60% at 5 day's treatment, and the 70% of fertilized egg ratio was only observed when the treatment days come to 7 days. It was understood that the unfertilized egg ratio was high at the antepupa stage rather than that of post-pupa stage. 7) According to the result of observation the sperm in copulatory pouch and seminal receptacle out of the normal female silk worm which have been copulated with the male brought up in the condition of high temperature at their moth stage. The reproduction system found in the control zone has been found to be normal and the sperm is amountful and active in motion while the sperm found in the treatment to be limited in amount and slow in motion. The observation was made within 5 hours from the copulation. 8) According to the result of observation of sperm of seminal receptacles of the female silkworm moth, and according to that observation of sperm in the seminal receptacle in female silkworm moth, the amount of sperm and mobility in the female moth brought up in high temperature were poor comparing that were brought up in normal temperature zone. Some of them are even found to be no trace of such. 9) Appearance and mosle of the copulatory organ of the male silkworm moth was found to be no anatomical change. 10) Testis of the later pupa stage which was brought up in the high temperature was found to be almost net developed to anucleate sperm and they are degenerated at stage of between maturation division and sperm abnormal stage. Mean time at control zone, the formation of anucleate sperm was already observed.
Pot experiments were conducted from 1999 to 2001 to compare the different methods of available phosphorus (P) for estimation of biomass and P uptake by tomato and cucumber grown on different soils (25 soils for tomato and 8 soils for cucumber cultivation) collected from plastic film house of Chungbuk area. Supplementary experiment was conducted to estimate the relationship among several extraction methods of available P such as P adsorption, water extractable-P, Lancaster-P, Olsen-P, Bray No 1 and No 2-P, and Mehlich 1 and 3-P for a total of 71 soils that included 33 soils collected for tomato and cucumber cultivation and 38 soils taken from other sites of plastic film house. All the extraction methods of available phosphorus except P adsorption were mutually positive correlated with r ranging from 0.81 to 0.96 while the correlation coefficient between P adsorption and other methods ranged from -0.57 to -0.80. Phosphorus uptake by tomato plant applied with no fertilizer was significantly correlated with the available P extracted by different methods except P adsorption in all the experiments showing positive correlation coefficients from 0.49 to 0.76 in April, 1999, 0.53 to 0.71 in April, 2000, and 0.59 to 0.68 in October, 2000. Consequently relative amount of P uptake by tomato plant for all the experiments also significantly correlated with available P in soils showing correlation coefficients of r=0.64~0.73 (P<0.0000001) in the order of Mehlich 1-P > Mehlich 3-P > Lancaster-P. For tomato, critical concentrations of available P in soils estimated by Cate and Nelson split method were $1700mg\;kg^{-1}$ for Mehlich 3-P, $1,050mg\;kg^{-1}$ for Mehlich 1-P, and $95mg\;kg^{-1}$ for water extractable P. Also P uptake by cucumber plant was significantly correlated with Olsen-P, water extractable P, and Bray No 2-P with r value of 0.62, 0.59, and 0.51, respectively, in soils of no fertilization.

Chemical characteristics and their interrelationships of 156 soils included by 74 sandy loam and 82 loam soils collected from plastic film house in Chungbuk area were investigated from 1998 to 2001. Seventeen chemical properties including pH, organic matter (OM), electrical conductivity (EC), inorganic nitrogen, available phosphorus, exchangeable cations, CEC, etc., were analyzed by correlation, standardized partial regression coefficient, and principal factor analysis. Standardized partial regression coefficients of chemical properties were estimated to determine the degree of contribution of EC and OM contents in soils. Principal factor analysis was applied to classify the studied chemical properties into different groups having similar chemical properties. The pH of experimental soils ranged from 4.24 to 7.14 and 4.95 to 7.35 for loam and sandy loam soils, respectively. The EC of soils varied from 0.93 to $15.65dS\;m^{-1}$ for loam and $0.91{\sim}22.30dS\;m^{-1}$ for sandy loam soils, respectively with significant differences among them. The EC measured by 1:5 $H_2O$ dilution method and saturation method were significantly related with 8.163 and 8.599 as the slopes of regression equation for loam and sandy loam soils, respectively. These slopes more than 8.0 in this regression equation was higher than the slope of 5.0 that is estimated from dilution coefficient suggesting that EC measured by 1:5 dilution method might be erratic. The standardized partial regression coefficient of different chemical properties for the estimation of EC was in the order of $NO_3{^-}$ > $Cl^-$ > OM > exchangeable Mg for loam soils and $NO_3{^-}$ > exchangeable Mg > $Cl^-$ for sandy loam soils. Contribution order of the chemical properties based on standardized partial regression coefficient differed 1:5 dilution method and saturation method, indicating that different chemical compounds might be present in the extract solutions of these two methods. Consequently the measurement of EC by saturation method was thought be still better for estimation of chemical property because accuracy of EC measurement by 1:5 dilution method can't be improved by any specific coefficient for adjustment of EC. Regardless of differences in soil textures and extraction methods, correlation coefficients between EC and the other chemical properties were routinely in the order of $NO_3{^-}$ > $Cl^-$ > degree of base saturation > exchangeable Mg > exchangeable Ca > $SO{_4}^{2-}$. The principal factor analysis revealed four factor groups of the chemical properties studied. The groups for sandy loam were as follows; ; 1. salt components, 2. soil reaction components, 3. fixed and adsorption components, 4. CEC components. The groupings of loam soils were similar to sandy loam except that exchangeable Na substituted the CEC of sandy loam.

A long term fertilizer trial has been conducted on a silty clayloam soil with barley as test crop since 1975. The treatments included NPK, NK, NP, and PK, and no fertilizer. This paper is to report the barley yield trend during 16 years(1975~1990) and the soil chemical properties and nutrient uptake by barley in 1990. Following is the summary of the results. 1. The average yield of barley in 16 years were in the order of NPK(100%) > PK(69%) > NP(55%) > No Fertilizer(35%) > NK(24%). Of special interst was that in 16th year the yield of barley in NK plot, namely without P, was nil. 2. In NK plot where the yield of barley was nil in 16th year, the uptake of N, P, and K by plant was lowest amomg the treatments and N, K fertilizer uptake efficiencies were nagative. 3. The soil analysis in 16th year revealed that in NK plot the pH, the available P and exchangeable Ca and Mg were very low. In 16 years average, there was positive correlation between the yield of barley and available P and exchangeable Mg in the soil. One interesting point was that in 16th year the $NO_3-N$ in the soul was relatively high, but N uptake by barley was very low.
This experiment was conducted to obtain the basis of degradation of remaining agricultural chemicals accumulated in upland soils of Honam district in Korea. The population. relative growth rate(RGR). chlorothalonil(TPN)-degradation ability and bacterialogical characteristics of TPN resistant strains were investigated in TPN levels of 0, 25, 50, 100 and $500{\mu}l/ml$ compared with Mancozeb. A number of TPN-resistant bacteria were differ in the area of examined and were decreased with higher levels of TPN. The resistance of bacteria was stronger in TPN than Mancozeb but the resistance of fungi was vise versa. RGR of bacteria in the culture was the highest at the level of $50{\mu}l/ml$ and the lowest in $500{\mu}l/ml$ of TPN. TPN-degradation ability of bacteda isolated in various TPN levels was varied : only 8 percentage of bacteria showed 75 percentage or more degradation ability. The higher the concentration in TPN resistance, the larger the number of strains carried great ability to decompose pesticide residues. The strains having higher decomposition ability was rod-shapes cells and senstive to heat. Analyses of the indol production, methyl red, and V-P test have given similar results, with negative reaction in all these strain, while the other biochemical characteristics were differ in the strains. Based on these, these strains might be classified into Pseudomonas sp., Corynebacterium sp., Acinetobacter sp. and Moraxcella sp.

This pot experiment was conducted to investigate the changes of leaching in percolated water of paddy soil in which rice was cultivated in conditions of 0%, 5%. 30% addition of bituminous and anthracite fly ash respectively in greenhouse. pH in percolated water was higher in non cultivated plot than in cultivated plot. pH of the fly ash treated plot was higher than that of the control plot. pH in the cultivated plot decreased gradually during the cultivation. The contents of $NH_4-N$, $NO_3-N$ and K in percolated water decreased rapidly after mid-July, and was very low in the cultivated plot. Over the cultivation time, P contents in percolated water was very low. $SiO_2$, contents in percolated water decreased rapidly after June. Na contents in percolated water was highest in mid-June and then decreased gradually. In the cultivated plot, Ca contents in percolated water was higher than that in the control plot. During the cultivation, Ca contents in percolated water decreased gradually. But, in later-term of cultivation. Ca contents in percolated water was relatively Mgh. Mg contents in percolated water decreased after mid-July, but decreased continuously till the later-term of cultivation. EC in the percolated water was highest in mid-June. and then decreased gradually. EC of fly ash treated plot was higher than that of the control plot. The soil pH was increased and phosphate content in the soil was accumulated very high by application of fly ashes in paddy field after rice cultivation. Fly ash treatment did not increase the contents of elements in percolated water compared with the control plot. The difference between anthracite and bituminous fly ash was not so clear. Fly ash treatment, inhibited early growth and tillering. But, in later-term of cultivation, the inhibition effects of nonproductive tillering was expected. Fly ash treatment will be good if it was applicated after last year's harvest because leaching would happen over fallowing time. Contents of inorganic elements in percolated water of fly ash treated plot was not so high compared with that in the control plot.
To get the basic data for organic farming, the Chinese cabbage(Brassica pekinensis Rupr.) was cultivated in field of sandy loam soil and compost was applied at the ratios of 0, 20, 40, 80, 120ton per ha, respectively, with N-P-K elements. The yield of Chinese cabbage was maximum in the plot of compost 40t/ha application and it's weight was 3,783g/head. The chemical components of Chinese cabbage were no remarkable changes with the increasing amount of compost application. Content of organic matter in soil after experiment was finished was 39g/kg, total nitrogen was 2.2g/kg, available phosphorus was 1,927mg /kg. CEC was $11.4cmol^+/kg$, exchangable cations were K:0.5. Ca:0.6. Mg:0.3 and $Na:0.2cmol^+/kg$ in treatment of compost 120 t/ha.
