  • In this paper, compact linear dual polarized series-fed $1{\times}2$ linear and $2{\times}2$ planar arrays antennas for airborne SAR applications are proposed. The proposed antenna design consists of a square radiating patch that is placed on top of the substrate, a quarter wave transformer and $50-{\Omega}$ matched transformer. Matching between a radiating patch and the $50-{\Omega}$ microstrip line is accomplished through a direct coupled-feed technique with the help of an impedance inverter (${\lambda}/4$ impedance transformer) placed at both horizontal and vertical planes, in the case of the $2{\times}2$ planar array. The overall size for the prototype-1 and prototype-2 fabricated antennas are $1.9305{\times}0.9652{\times}0.05106{{\lambda}_0}^3$ and $1.9305{\times}1.9305{\times}0.05106{{\lambda}_0}^3$, respectively. The fabricated structure has been tested, and the experimental results are similar to the simulated ones. The CST MWS simulated and vector network analyzer measured reflection coefficient ($S_{11}$) results were compared, and they indicate that the proposed antenna prototype-1 yields the impedance bandwidth >140 MHz (9.56-9.72 GHz) defined by $S_{11}$<-10 dB with 1.43%, and $S_{21}$<-25 dB in the case of prototype-2 (9.58-9.74 GHz, $S_{11}$< -10 dB) >140 MHz for all the individual ports. The surface currents and the E- and H-field distributions were studied for a better understanding of the polarization mechanism. The measured results of the proposed dual polarized antenna were in accordance with the simulated analysis and showed good performance of the S-parameters and radiation patterns (co-pol and cross-pol), gain, efficiency, front-to-back ratio, half-power beam width) at the resonant frequency. With these features and its compact size, the proposed antenna will be suitable for X-band airborne synthetic aperture radar applications.

  • This paper presents a closely spaced two-element folded-dipole-driven quasi-Yagi array with low mutual coupling between adjacent elements. The antenna utilizes a T-junction power divider as the feeding network, with an input impedance of $50{\Omega}$. A microstrip-stub is added to the ground plane in the middle of the two elements to improve the mutual coupling characteristics. The folded dipole driver is connected to a $50{\Omega}$ microstrip line via a broadband microstrip-to-coplanar stripline transition with a quarter radial stub. A mutual coupling of less than -22 dB is measured between two folded-dipole-driven quasi-Yagi antennas with a center-to-center spacing of 30 mm ($0.55{\lambda}_0$ at 5.5 GHz). The proposed quasi-Yagi array yields a measured bandwidth of 4.75~6.43 GHz for the -10 dB reflection coefficient and a gain of 6.14~7.12 dBi within the bandwidth range.

  • Korea has not any fixed station for Radio Navigation systems yet. In some part of the Korean Sea, however, Japanese stations can be utilized for the Radio Navigation. 3 Decca chains were proposed to install the Decca Navigation network for Korea. Only for the coverage area, 1 Decca chain is sufficient for the sea around Korea instead of 3 chains. At present, Omega system is the most recommendable for the positioning in the farther area. In nearshore area, Raydist or Decca Trisponder is is useful for obtaining the position with high accuracy.

  • The characteristics of waveguide, electrode and packaging fabricated for acousto-optic tunable filters(AOTF) used for optical communications were analyzed. A $Ti:LiNbO_3$in-diffusing method was employed for the formation of the optical waveguide with a dimension of width $8{\mu}m$, length $30000-50000{\mu}m$ and varying the thickness. The diffusion was carried at $1050^{\circ}C$ for 8 hours to pattern the optical waveguide. The resulted waveguide exhibited a single mode at 1550nm optical wavelength. The width of IDT, with 10 SAM periods, was $5000{\mu}m$ . Impedances of the electrodes deposited with Au were analyzed using a network analyzer; $48.1\Omega$ at the center frequency of 193MHz for electrode thickness of $1500{\AA}$ and $50.7\Omega$ at the center frequency of 192MHz for $1600\AA$. And the characteristics of packaged AOTF was analyzed. When the electrical frequency 177.1MHz was applied to the device, the mode conversion efficiency was measured as 63% at the optical wavelength 1515nm.

  • This paper deals with change of contact angle, surface potential decay, surface resistivity and XPS of water-treated epoxy insulator. From the experimental results on the contact angle was reduced from $74^{\circ}$to $24^{\circ}$ due to the formation of polar hydroxyl groups on surface which was associated with intermolecular reaction between epoxy chains of three-dimensional network structure and water molecules. From the experimental results in the surface potential decay of water treated-samples, it was found that the accumulation of charge is decreased and the surface potential decay time is shortened by the interaction of polar hydroxyl groups induced on the treated surface as the increment of treatment time. The positive charging on the treated surface compared with negative charging is relatively lowered by the induction of polar hydroxyl groups. The surface resistivity was changed from $10^{15}[{\Omega}/cm^2$] to $10^{12}[{\Omega}/cm^2$] caused by water treatment. From XPS, it was found that the changes affected by the surface degradation of epoxy were caused by the generation of carboxyl groups through the chain decomposition and recombination with oxygen molecules in the air.

  • The Sb-doped $SnO_2$ nanowire network sensors were prepared by thermal evaporation of the mixtures between tin and antimony powders. Pure $SnO_2$ nanowire networks showed high sensor resistance in air ($99M{\Omega}$), similar gas responses to 4 diffferent gases (5 ppm $C_2H_5OH$, CO, $H_2$, and trimethylamine), and very sluggish recovery speed (90% recovery time > 800 s). In contrast, 2 wt% Sb-doped $SnO_2$ showed the selective detection toward $C_2H_5OH$ and trimethylamine, relatively low resistance ($176k{\Omega}$) for facile measurement, and ultrafast recovery speed (90% recovery times: 6 - 18 s). The change of gas sensing charactersitics by Sb doping was discussed in relation to gas sensing mechanism.

  • In investigating the characteristics of a neural network, the use of planar microelectrode array shows several advantages over normal intracellular recording[1]. A transparent indium tin oxide(ITO) multi-electrode array(MEA) was fabricated and its top surface was insulated with photodefinable polyimide(HD-8001) except the exposed area for interfacing between the ITO electrodes and the neuronal cells. The exposed ITO electrodes were platinized in order to reduce the impedance between the electrodes and electrolyte. The one-minute platinization with $0.99nA/{\mu}m^2$ current density reduced the average impedance of the electrodes from $2.5M\Omega\;to\;90k\Omega$ at 1kHz in normal ringer solution. Cardiac cells were cultured on this MEA as a pilot study before neuron culture. The signals detected by the platinized electrodes had larger amplitudes and improved signal to noise ratio(SNR) compared to non-platinized electrodes. It is clear that microelectrodes need to have lower impedance to make reliable extracellular recordings, and thus platinization is essential part of MEA fabrication. Burst spike of cultured olfactory bulb was also detected with the MEA having platinized electrodes.

  • This paper presents a 6 Gb/s 4-channel arrayed transimpedance amplifiers (TIA) with the gain control for 4-channel passive optical network in $0.13{\mu}m$ complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology. A regulated cascode input stage and inductive-series peaking are proposed in order to increase the bandwidth. Also, a variable gain control is implemented to provide flexibility to the overall system. The TIA has a maximum $98.1dB{\Omega}$ gain and an input current noise level of about 37.8 pA/Hz. The die area of the fabricated TIA is $1.9mm{\times}2.2mm$ for 4-channel. The power dissipation is 47.64 mW/1ch.
