Effects of Eucommia ulmodies Oliver Tea Extract on aluminum Accumulation Rate and Tissue Function in Aluminum-administered Rats (두충차 추출액이 알루미늄 투여 흰쥐의 알루미늄 축적률과 각종 장기 기능에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was designed to investigate the effects of Korean Eucommia ulmodies Oliver tea extract on aluminum administered rats. Forty-eight male Sprague-Dawley rats (100${\pm}$10 g) were divided into the following six groups; control group, 3% E. ulmodies tea extract group, 1,000 and 2,000 ppm aluminum ($Al_2(SO_4)_3$ in distilled water) groups, and 1,000 and 2,000 ppm aluminum plus 3% E. ulmodies tea extract groups. The aluminum content in the rat tissues of the aluminum administered group was lower than that in the rat tissue of the aluminum group administered 3% E. ulmodies tea extract. Asparate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase levels increased in the aluminum-administered group but were lower in the 3% E. ulmodies tea extract group. Lactate dehydrogenase was lower in the 3% extract E. ulmodies teaaluminum group than that in the aluminum group. Cholinesterase was higher in the 3% E. ulmodies tea-aluminum group than that in the aluminum group. Plasma renin activity levels increased in the aluminum administration group, compared with the aluminum plus 3% E. ulmodies tea group. Plasma aldosterone levels increased in the aluminum administration group compared with the aluminum plus 3% E. ulmodies tea group. These results suggest that an extract of E. ulmodies tea in water has lowering effects on the accumulation of aluminum. It is believed that the E. ulmodies tea had some protective effects in the aluminum-administered rats, but the mechanisms remain obscure.

  • This reserch was carried out to investigate the nitrite scavenging abilities (NSA) of 7 kinds of tea extracts. Nitrites are used as additives of cured meat preperation and exist in plants, foods, and medicines, so we intake it very often easily. Nitrites can act with amines to produce nitrosamine which is known to be a carcinogen. It is known that the pH, concentration of amines, and amounts of nitrite are three important conditions of nitrosamine occurence. 7 kinds of tea used in this experiment were Persimmon tree (Diospyroo kaki Thiunb, Per.), Mulberry tree (Morus alba Linne, Mul.), Rubber tree (eucommia ulmoi-des Oliver, Rub.), Solomon's-seal (Bolygonatu Morr, Som.), Chicory (Cichorrium intybus L, Chi.), Sumach (Rhus javanica L., Sum.), Docwood (Cornus officinale Sieb, Doc.) and they were extracted with methanol (MeOH), ethyl ether (EtEt), ethyl acetate (EtAc), and also the extract existed in the aqueous layer II (Aq L. II) was used.

The Aroma Components of Duchung Tea and Persimmon Leaf Tea (두충차와 감잎차의 향기성분)

  • The aroma components of duchung tea and persimmon leaf tea were collected simultaneous distillation and extraction method. Those were analyzed and identified by GC-MS using a fused sillica capillary column. Seventy seven components, including 17 alcohols, 3 hydrocarbons, 15 ketones, 16 aldehydes, 8 esters,8 acids, 8 heterocyclic compounds and 2 phenols were confirmed in duchung tea. Seventy one components, including 17 alcohols, 10 hydrocabrons, 11 ketones, 13 aldehydes, 8 esters, 6 acids, 5 heterocyclic compounds and 1 phenol were confirmed in persimmon leaf tea. The most abundant components of duchung tea were aldehydes(23.31%) including 2-pentenal and heterocyclic compounds(16.71%) including $epoxy-{\beta}-ionone$. The most abundant components of persimmon leaf tea were alcohols(25.57%) including linalool and aldehydes(19.45%) including hexanal and hydrocarbons(10.40%) including ${\alpha}-copaene$.

Effect of Natural Plant Components on the Nitrite-scavenging (천연식물성분이 아질산염 소거에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this presents is to investigate, using natural food extracts(Green tea; Camellia sinesis, Du'chung; Eucommia ulmoides Oliver, Eu sung cho; Houttuynia cordate Thunb, Sam back cho; Saurus Chinensis, Baek hwa sa seal oho; Oldenladia diffusa Roxb., Laver; Porphyra tenera, Sea mustard; Undaria pinnatifda and Sea staghorn; Condium fragile) and juices(Sweet pepper; Capsicum annuum var. angulosum, Kale; Brassia oleracea var. acephala, Cucumber; Cucumis sativus, Onion; Allium cepa, Tomato; Lycopericon esculentum, Maesil; Prunus mume, Plum; Prunus salicina and Grape; Vitis spp.), the effect of natural plant components on the nitrite-scavenging under the different levels of pH. From the above mentioned extracts and juices, the content of vitamin C was detected, containing 65.1∼77.1 mg/100g, at the highest level in the Green tea, and followed by vegetables and fruits in order. The nitrite scavenging effect of teas, medicinal plants, and seaweed extracts, in the reaction system under the condition of pH 1.2, were 57.0∼100%, 50.0∼100%, and 18.0∼99.0%, respectively. Growth and Morphological Charactersistics of Soybean Sprouts Treated with Leaf Extracts of Thea sinensis L. and Eucommia ulmoides Oliver (녹차와 두충 잎 추출물 처리에 따른 콩나물의 생장 및 형태적 특징)

  • Soybean sprouts presoaked to leaf extracts were on sale as taking a growing concern about wellbeing foods. The study was carried out to compare the effects of culture period after presoaking tea (Thea sinensis L.) and hard rubber tree (Eucommia ulmoides Oliver) leaf extracts on lateral root formation, growth and morphological characters of the sprouts. Seeds of three cultivars, Pungsannamulkong, Sowonkong and Junjery, were imbibed for 5 hours into 10% solutions immediately before 5, 6 and 7 day cultures. The cultured sprouts were classified into 4 categories to calculate their composition rates on the base of hypocotyllengths; >7 cm (A),4 to 7 cm (B),< 4 cm (C) and not germinated (D), and their morphological characters, fresh and dry weights were measured. Rate of A was the lowest in Junjery of the three cultivars, while that of C showed reverse result compared to A. Similar results to that of A were observed between the three cultivars in sprout length including hypocotyl and root, diameters in middle and hook parts of hypocotyl, total fresh and dry weights. Regardless of tea and hard rubber tree leaf extract treatments, longer culture periods increased rate of A due to decrements of B, C and D, and also did the growth and the morphological characters mentioned above. Although longer culture periods reduced the increment of lateral roots, the latter treatment was more delayed in their formation and less in the roots per sprout than the former one. The growth and the morphological characters above were less in the latter treatment than in the former one in general, meaning that hard rubber tree leaf extract could more repress growth of soybean sprouts than tea leaf extract.

Development of Functional Tea Products for Hypertension Patients with the Mixed Medicinal Herbal Extracts (고혈압 환자에 도움을 줄 수 있는 한방 다류 개발)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of Eucommia ulmoides Oliver (Du-Zhong) as a main ingredient in a mixture of various medicinal herbal extracts on blood pressure, serum lipid concentrations, and hematological variables in hypertensive patients. After 4 weeks on drinking the mixed medicinal herbal teas, systolic blood pressure remarkably decreased from 167.14 to 134.86 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure decreased from 100.00 to 87.10 mmHg. In terms of serum lipid profiles, there were no differences in total-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol level, and atherogenic index, However, the level of triglycerol was significantly reduced from 237.1 before the experiment to 145.00 mg/dL after 4 weeks on drinking the mixed medicinal herbal teas. Serum triglyceride were remarkably reduced from 237.1 to 145.00 mg/dL in the hypertensive patients who had taken the combined medicinal herbal extracts. Compared with data obtained from the patients before the experiment, there were no differences in hematological variables (RBC, WBC, hematocrit, hemoglobin, platlets and homocysteine) after the 4 weeks experiments, but mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration was significantly increased by 2.70% (p<0.05) in the blood samples. Based on these findings, it can be presumed that the examined mixed medicinal herbal tea may be effective in lowering blood pressure and in increasing mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration due to reduced serum triglyceride levels in hypertension patients.

  • The effect of natural foods, utilizing the extracts or juices of teas(Green tea; Camellia sinesis, Du'chung; Eucommia ulmoides Oliver), medicinal plants(Eu sung cho; Houttuynia cordata Thunb, Sam back cho; Saurus Chinensis, Baek hwa sa seal cho; Oldenladia diffusa Roxb.) seaweeds(Laver; Porphyra tenera, Sea mustard; Undaria pinnatifida, Sea staghorn; Condium fragile) and vegetables(Sweet pepper; Capsicum annuum var. angulosum, Kale; Brassia oleracea var.. acephala, Cucumber; Cucumis sativus, Onion; Allium cepa) and fruits(Tomato; Lycopericon esculentum, Maesil; Prunus mume, Plum; Prunus saticina and Grape; Vitis spp.)on the inhibition of N-Nitrosodimethylamine(NDMA) formation was investigated from the various conditions. The inhibition effect was observed in vitro using the reaction fluids of pH 1.2, 4.2 and 6.0. From the teas and medicinal plants, there was a positive response of NDMA formation; however, From the seaweed extracts, there was a negative response of the inhibition effect of NDMA formation, and as the pH of reaction fluids and the amount of materials increase, the inhibition of NDMA formation was strengthened. The inhibition ratios by the level of pH are as follows: under pH 1.2 vegetable juice were 57.6∼99.7% and fruits were 35.9∼99.7%; under pH 4.2 vegetable juice were 55.0∼97.5% and fruits were 21.3∼96.8%. All of the materials observed has been proved and shown the inhibition effect of NDMA formation.

Lateral Root Formation and Growth of Soybean Sporouts Treated with Various Solutions (다양한 물질처리에 의한 콩나물의 세근형성 및 생장)

  • Lateral roots of soybean sprouts should deeply affect their quality and marketability. The study was done to compare the effects of ocher, chitosan, corn kennel, tea (Thea sinensis L.) and hard rubber tree (Eucommia ulmoides Oliver) leaf extracts on lateral root formation, growth and morphological characters of the sprouts. Seeds of three cultivars, Pungsannamulkong, Sowonkong and Junjery, were imbibed for 5 hours into their 10% solutions and cultured for 6 days. The cultured sprouts were classified into 4 categories to calculate their composition rates on the base of hypocotyl lengths;>7 cm (A), 4 to 7 cm (B), < 4 cm (C) and not germinated (D), and their morphological characters, fresh and dry weights were measured. Composition rate of A was the lowest in Junjery of the three cultivars, while that of C showed reverse result compared to A. This results was the most distinct in hard rubber tree leaf extracts (HRTLE) of the five treatments. In HRTLE treatment, lateral root formation rate were formed in almost of Sowonkong although reduced in order of Pungsannamulkong and Junjery. However, there was no significant difference between the other treatments. Lateral roots per sprout were the lowest in HRTLE treatment of the 5 treatments. In all treatments except the chitosan treatment, the roots were most formed in Sowonkong but least in Junjery. Sprout length adding hypocotyl and root was the shortest in Junjery compared to the other two cultivars. and was the longest in tea leaf extract treatment but the shortest in HRTLE treatment. The result in total fresh weight of sprouts was similar to that of the sprout length.
