User Perception of Olfactory Information and Classification of Videos for Reality Improvement (영상실감을 위한 후각정보에 대한 사용자 지각과 영상분류)

  • 영상실감증대를 위한 시각, 청각정보의 제시방식에 대해서는 많은 진보가 이루어 졌다. 반면 후각은 정의하기 어렵고 다루기 까다롭기 때문에 관련연구를 찾아보기 어렵다. 본 연구에서는 후각정보를 통한 영상실감증대 연구의 첫걸음으로 후각정보에 대한 사용자 수용도를 조사한 후 이에 근거하여 다양한 영상을 분류하였다. 이를 위해 먼저 영상에 냄새가 존재하는지 (냄새존재여부), 영상과 함께 해당 냄새를 경험하고 싶은지 (냄새제시선호), 영상에 어울리는 냄새가 내가 좋아하는 냄새인지 (냄새자체선호), 그리고 영상에 어울리는 냄새가 얼마나 구체적인지 (냄새의 구체성)라는 네 가지 질문을 선정하였다. 각 질문들에 높은 혹은 낮은 점수를 받을 만한 다양한 장르의 영상 (51)개를 수집한 후, 참가자들에게 하나씩 영상을 시청하게 한 후 위의 네 가지 질문에 대해 7점 척도로 평정하게 하였다. 영상분류를 위해 두 질문씩 쌍으로 묶어 각 질문의 척도를 2차원 평면의 X, Y축으로 설정한 후 평정값을 이용하여 영상분류를 위한 산포도를 구성하였다. 2차원 평면의 서로 다른 사분면에 위치한 영상군집들은 영상실감증대를 위한 후각정보 제시에 중요한 시사점을 줄 것으로 기대한다.

Mammalian Reproduction and Pheromones (포유동물의 생식과 페로몬)

  • Rodents and many other mammals have two chemosensory systems that mediate responses to pheromones, the main and accessory olfactory system, MOS and AOS, respectively. The chemosensory neurons associated with the MOS are located in the main olfactory epithelium, while those associated with the AOS are located in the vomeronasal organ(VNO). Pheromonal odorants access the lumen of the VNO via canals in the roof of the mouth, and are largely thought to be nonvolatile. The main pheromone receptor proteins consist of two superfamilies, V1Rs and V2Rs, that are structurally distinct and unrelated to the olfactory receptors expressed in the main olfactory epithelium. These two type of receptors are seven transmembrane domain G-protein coupled proteins(V1R with $G_{{\alpha}i2}$, V2R with $G_{0\;{\alpha}}$). V2Rs are co-expressed with nonclassical MHC Ib genes(M10 and other 8 M1 family proteins). Other important molecular component of VNO neuron is a TrpC2, a cation channel protein of transient receptor potential(TRP) family and thought to have a crucial role in signal transduction. There are four types of pheromones in mammalian chemical communication - primers, signalers, modulators and releasers. Responses to these chemosignals can vary substantially within and between individuals. This variability can stem from the modulating effects of steroid hormones and/or non-steroid factors such as neurotransmitters on olfactory processing. Such modulation frequently augments or facilitates the effects that prevailing social and environmental conditions have on the reproductive axis. The best example is the pregnancy block effect(Bruce effect), caused by testosterone-dependent major urinary proteins(MUPs) in male mouse urine. Intriguingly, mouse GnRH neurons receive pheromone signals from both odor and pheromone relays in the brain and may also receive common odor signals. Though it is quite controversial, recent studies reveal a complex interplay between reproduction and other functions in which GnRH neurons appear to integrate information from multiple sources and modulate a variety of brain functions.

  • A science museum responds independently based on the exhibits and exhibition environments as the visitors are different in purposes, interests and demands. Therefore a science museum should be designed keeping it in mind that there are various ways for visitors to perceive and use the exhibition spaces and exhibits. The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze the characteristics of sensory receptors for the exhibits in National Museum of Nature and Science's Global Gallery, Tokyo, in terms of information transmission and to identify the nature of exhibit medium that can affect the perception and recognition of the exhibits by visitors. Through these 9 sensory receptors, human recognizes first with visual, auditory and olfactory senses and reacts using vestibular organ, proprioceptor (stretch), tangoreceptor, themoreceptor, taste and olfactory senses. Human uses these information processing to recolonize the external environment. This process is similar to the visitor's information transmission process for the exhibition medium. By dividing the analysis results per exhibition theme and developing the information transmission processing types per sensory receptor, we could understand that the distribution conditions are closely connected with the composition of the exhibition scenario in the exhibtion area. Especially, the understanding of how the information transmission is made through sensory receptors could can be the criteria that determines on the factors that can identify the exhibition purposes of a science museum which are eduction and understanding.

User Perception of Olfactory Information for Video Reality and Video Classification (영상실감을 위한 후각정보에 대한 사용자 지각과 영상분류)

  • There has been much advancement in reality enhancement using audio-visual information. On the other hand, there is little research on provision of olfactory information because smell is difficult to implement and control. In order to obtain necessary basic data when intend to provide smell for video reality, in this research, we investigated user perception of smell in diverse videos and then classified the videos based on the collected user perception data. To do so, we chose five main questions which were 'whether smell is present in the video'(smell presence), 'whether one desire to experience the smell with the video'(preference for smell presence with the video), 'whether one likes the smell itself'(preference for the smell itself), 'desired smell intensity if it is presented with the video'(smell intensity), and 'the degree of smell concreteness'(smell concreteness). After sampling video clips of various genre which are likely to receive either high and low ratings in the questions, we had participants watch each video after which they provided ratings on 7-point scale for the above five questions. Using the rating data for each video clips, we constructed scatter plots by pairing the five questions and representing the rating scale of each paired questions as X-Y axes in 2 dimensional spaces. The video clusters and distributional shape in the scatter plots would provide important insight into characteristics of each video clusters and about how to present olfactory information for video reality.

Mass Spectrometry-Based Screening Platform Reveals Orco Interactome in Drosophila melanogaster

  • Animals use their odorant receptors to receive chemical information from the environment. Insect odorant receptors differ from the G protein-coupled odorant receptors in vertebrates and nematodes, and very little is known about their protein-protein interactions. Here, we introduce a mass spectrometric platform designed for the large-scale analysis of insect odorant receptor protein-protein interactions. Using this platform, we obtained the first Orco interactome from Drosophila melanogaster. From a total of 1,186 identified proteins, we narrowed the interaction candidates to 226, of which only two-thirds have been named. These candidates include the known olfactory proteins Or92a and Obp51a. Around 90% of the proteins having published names likely function inside the cell, and nearly half of these intracellular proteins are associated with the endomembrane system. In a basic loss-of-function electrophysiological screen, we found that the disruption of eight (i.e., Rab5, CG32795, Mpcp, Tom70, Vir-1, CG30427, Eaat1, and CG2781) of 28 randomly selected candidates affects olfactory responses in vivo. Thus, because this Orco interactome includes physiologically meaningful candidates, we anticipate that our platform will help guide further research on the molecular mechanisms of the insect odorant receptor family.

  • UX (User Experience) Design was an interdisciplinary approach in humanities, engineering, science and design. We classified the roles of user experience; requirement analysis which are user research, constraints analysis and direction analysis, concept design, information architecture, physical UI, graphical UI, sound UI, Olfactory UI, prototype, evaluation, launch, localization, and knowledge management/UI DB. User research methods were classified by the relation of designer, user, and product/service. We reviewed three issues of UX design; complexity management, efficiency management, and mapping management.

  • For measuring EEG with the international 10-20 electrode system on 16 channels, and to analyze the interrelationship between the original signals and the changed signals after the stimulation, we use the scent of lavender which stimulates the olfactory sense. Moreover, the effect of the scent stimulation to the brain is analyzed. The purpose of this analysis is to apply these results to the computerized mapping of the brain signals and to find possible ways of specifying the source of the brain signals through various medical applications.

  • A method of multimedia information data acquisition based on fuzzy rules is proposed, where the multimedia means the five senses of a human being. Observed information is characterized by VAGOT(visual, acoustic, gustatory, olfactory and tactile) time series data and the goal is to extract an appropriate subset of the VAGOT data based on a given instruction. Fuzzy rules based on visual and acoustic information are used to identify the appropriate time interval on the fireworks multimedia information.

  • 유비쿼터스시대에 발맞추어 사용자가 언제 어디서나 편리하게 사용할 수 있는 컴퓨팅 환경의 제공이 가능해졌고 이에 따라 차세대 컴퓨팅으로서 휴대형 PC가 실용화될 전망이다. 차세대 휴대형 PC에서는 지금까지의 시각, 청각에 의한 인터페이스 외에도 촉각, 후각, 미각과 같은 인간의 오감을 통한 실감형 서비스를 제공할 수 있는 인터페이스가 등장할 것으로 예상된다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 사용자 중심의 실감형 인터페이스를 구현하기 위하여 다른 삼감 즉 촉각, 후각, 미각 가운데에서 후각에 대하여 이를 어떻게 부호화 할 것이며 또한 MPEG7 기반에서 XML로 기술하는 방법과 활용문제에 대해 기술한다. 본 논문에서는 인간의 오감 가운데 기억과 밀접한 관계가 있는 후각정보를 기반으로 이를 표현, 재생, 검색할 수 있는 방법에 관하여 기술한다.

A technology of realistic multi-media display and odor recognition using olfactory sensors (후각 센서를 이용한 냄새 인식 및 실감형 멀티미디어 표현 기술)

  • In this paper, we propose a floral scent recognition using odor sensors and a odor display using odor distribution system. Proposed odor recognition has method of correlation coefficient between sensors that select optimal sensors in floral scent recognition system of selective multi-sensors. Proposed floral scent recognition system consists of four module such as floral scent acquisition module, optimal sensor decision module, entropy-based floral scent detection module, and floral scent recognition module. Odor distribution system consists of generation module of distribution information, control module of distribution, output module of distribution. We applied to floral scent recognition for performance evaluation of proposed sensors decision method. As a result, application of proposed method with floral scent recognition obtained recognition rate of 95.67% case of using 16 sensors while applied floral scent recognition system of proposed sensor decision method confirmed recognition rate of 96% using only 8 sensors. Also, we applied to odor display of proposed method and obtained 3.18 thorough MOS experimentation.
