We have been developed an intelligent mobile robot with an artificial olfactory function to recognize odours and to track odour source location. This mobile robot also has ben installed an engine for speech recognition and synthesis and is controlled by wireless communication. An artificial olfactory system based on array of 7 gas sensors has been installed in the mobile robot for odour recognition, and 11 gas sensors also are located in the obttom of robot to track odour sources. 3 optical sensors are also in cluded in the intelligent mobile robot, which is driven by 2 D. C. motors, for clash avoidance in a way of direction toward an odour source. Throughout the experimental trails, it is confirmed that the intelligent mobile robot is capable of not only the odour recognition using artificial neural network algorithm, but also the tracking odour source using the step-by-step approach method. The preliminary results are promising that intelligent mobile robot, which has been developed, is applicable to service robot system for environmental monitoring, localization of odour source, odour tracking of hazardous areas etc.
We designed the artificial olfactory sensing system (Electronic Nose) using MOS type sensor array fur recognizing and analyzing odour. The response of individual sensors of sensor array, each processing a slightly different response towards the sample volatiles, can provide enough information to discriminate between sample odours. In this paper, we applied clustering algorithm for dimension reduction, such as linear projection mapping (PCA method), nonlinear mapping (Sammon mapping method) and the combination of PCA and Sammon mapping having a better discriminating ability. The odours used are VOC (Volatile chemical compound) and Toxic gases.
Purpose - It has already been proved that 'mood' as the physical environment of shopping affects consumers' main sensory channels such as sight, hearing, smell, touch. However, there is no consensus on how the olfactory cue influences the customers in the shopping environment. In this study, we examine the previous studies on how the olfactory cue affects the customers in the shopping environment and present a clear direction as a suggestion for progressive research. Research design, data, and methodology - It is not important to use a lot of unconditional fragrance, but it should be exposed to the environment that suits the proper fragrance. In recent years, meaningful research on store fragrance has been slowly increasing. As a result, studies on the fragrance effects of retail stores have been conducted to verify the relevance of fragrance suitability in stores and consumer spending scale. Results - The fragrance appropriate for each store can not be uniformly specified as any fragrance. This is because external variables such as time, season, temperature, lighting, density of shoppers, and music in the store also affect customer evaluation. For example, using an unsuitable fragrance may encourage customers to leave the store quickly by restraining impulsive purchases or by disturbing concentration. The store manager should also be interested in using fragrances that are proven and effective in the store environment, but they should also have the ability to easily manipulate and manage the fragrances very appropriately according to changes in the store environment. Store managers should observe consumer preferences and responses according to their goals and strategies, and then systematically manage and store information about the fragrance appropriate to the store. Conclusions - In the future, the fragrance marketing researcher needs to consider the spatial form and density of the customer. In practice, managers operating a retail store should check the most appropriate store density(congestion) according to the size and spatial characteristics of the store and maintain the ideal conditions. To do this, it is necessary to pay attention to how to select and control sensory elements such as fragrance(olfactory), music(auditory), and lighting(visual).

Currently on the school education site, various multimedia contents are used to effectively deliver knowledge to the students and increase interest in class. The majority of the multimedia contents currently used in classes are composed of visual and auditory information. This paper intends to maximize actuality and immersion in the content by adding olfactory information to the existing visual and auditory data. Tangible contents were developed based on the details of aromatic plants learned in the fifth grade of elementary school. The shape and explanation of the aromatic plants are displayed with visual and auditory information, and an aroma spraying application is used to allow the students to smell the aromatic plants. After conducting the class using the developed contents, the students' satisfaction of the class, as well as their overall academic understanding, were investigated. Upon doing so, it was discovered that the students' academic understanding and satisfaction increased in comparison to classes comprised of only visual and auditory contents.

Recently, with the sensor technology, research about the electronic nose system which imitated the olfactory organ are being pushed actively. But, in case of general electronic nose system, an aroma is measured at the laboratory space where blocked external environment and is analyzed a part of measured data. In this paper, we propose the system which can measure and recognize an aroma in natural environment. We propose the Entropy algorithm which can detect the sensor reaction section among the continuous detection processing about an aroma. And we implement the aroma recognition system using the PCA(Principal Components Analysis) and K-NN(K-Nearest Neighbor) about the detected aroma. In order to evaluate the performance, we measured the aroma pattern, about 9 aroma oil, 50 times respectively. And we experimented the aroma detection and recognition using this. There was an error of 0.2s in the aroma detection and we get 84.3% recognition rate of the aroma recognition.
It is already known that olfactory susceptibility differ with races and sex. Moreover, with aging both detection and identification about olfactory information were impaired. For researches about evaluation of the odor with aging, although the subject used, from infants to elderly, was various, the kinds of odor used were restricted to simple alcohol and acetic acid. Also, the evaluation methods were mainly used olfactory test. From over respects , this research was done as follows. Subjects were 19 to 72 years (n=50) whose sense-of-smell functions are normal. They were taken as stability and closed eye state. The odor stimuli were used 100% natural odor of six kinds of Basil, Lavender, Lemon, Jasmine, Ylangylang oil and Skatole , during 60 seconds using olfactometer. ECG, GSR and subjective evaluation were measured, and examined their relevance. Twenty and 40 ages group evaluated Lemon and 60 ages group did Lavender affirmatively. Correlation was seen among RRI, HR, GSR and subjective evaluation for 40 ages group, and it turns out that it is the group which a mature olfactory function most. These results are fully applied not only to development of the classified cosmetics for the age group but to development of the artificial smell and taste.

For video reality improvement, there has been much advancement in the methods of providing visual, auditory, and tactile information. On the other hand, there is little research on olfaction for video reality because it is difficult to define and knotty to manipulate. As a first step for video reality improvement using olfactory information, this research investigated users' acceptability of smell when they watch videos of various kinds and then classified the video clips based on their acceptability of different criteria. To do so, we first selected three questions of whether the scene in the video appears to have an odor (odor presence), whether a matching odor is likely to improve a sense of reality (effect on sense of reality), and whether s/he would like a matching odor to be present (preference for the matching odor). Then after collecting 51 video clips of various genres that would receive either high or low ratings for the questions above, we had participants to watch the videos and rate them for the above three questions on 7-point scale. For video classification, we paired each two questions to construct 2D space to draw scatterplot of video clips where the scales of the two questions represent X or Y axis. Clusters of video clips that locate at different quadrants of the 2D space would provide important insights in providing olfactory information for video reality improvement.
CP (Cellular Phone) is currently one of the most attractive technologies and RT (Robot Technology) is also considered as one of the most promising next generation technology. We present a new technological concept named RCP (Robotic Cellular Phone), which combines RT and CP. RCP consists of 3 sub-modules, $RCP^{Mobility}$, $RCP^{Interaction}$, and $RCP^{Integration}$. $RCP^{Interaction}$ is the main focus of this paper. It is an interactive emotion system which provides CP with multi-emotional signal receiving functionalities. $RCP^{Interaction}$ is linked with communication functions of CP in order to interface between CP and user through a variety of emotional models. It is divided into a tactile, an olfactory and a visual mode. The tactile signal receiving module is designed by patterns and beat frequencies which are made by mechanical-vibration conversion of the musical melody, rhythm and harmony. The olfactory signal receiving module is designed by switching control of perfume-injection nozzles which are able to give the signal receiving to the CP-called user through a special kind of smell according to the CP-calling user. The visual signal receiving module is made by motion control of DC-motored wheel-based system which can inform the CP-called user of the signal receiving through a desired motion according to the CP-calling user. In this paper, a prototype system is developed for multi-emotional signal receiving modes of CP. We describe an overall structure of the system and provide experimental results of the functional modules.

Ltd, Korea), skatole (TAKASAO co.
