Comparative Economic Analysis on SOx Scrubber Operation for ECA Sailing Vessel

  • The IMO (International Maritime Organization) has mandated the restriction of SOx emissions to 0.5 % for all international sailing vessels since January 2020. And, a number of countries have designated emission control areas for stricter environmental regulations. Three representative methods have been suggested to cope with these regulations; using low-sulphur oil, installing a scrubber, or using LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) as fuel. In this paper, economic analysis was performed by comparing the method of installing a scrubber with the method of using low-sulphur oil without installing additional equipment. We suggested plausible layouts and compared the pros and cons of dif erent scrubber types for retrofitting. We selected an international sailing ship as the target vessel and estimated payback time and benefits based on navigation route, fuel consumption, and installation and operation costs. Two case of oil prices were analyzed considering the uncertainty of fuel oil price fluctuation. We found that the expected payback time of investment varies from 1 year to 3.5 years depending on the operation ratio of emission control areas and the fuel oil price change.

전기하전식 세정집진장치 개발에 관한 기초 연구 (A Basic Study on Developing an Electrocharged Scrubber)

  • This study has been performed to develop an efficient electrocharged scrubber. To improve collection efficiency of the scrubber, electric-charger was installed at the forefront of the packed crossflow scrubbers, and an experiment of changing discharge electrode shape and fluctuating electric field strength was undertaken. After using a light-oil boiler for generation of particles in the about 80% weight of submicron size particles was exhausted. Collection characteristics of the electrocharged scrubber were similar to those of two-stage electrostatic precipitator. In this study the collection efficiency of submicron size particles has been much improved, compared with the previous ones. In an experiment of changing discharge electrode and electric field strength, a needle-spike shape wire electrode showed a higher collection efficiency than round shape wire. The collection efficiency becomes increased with an increase of electric field strength.

  • The Recovery facility, the scrubber is a collection device that injects liquid into the gas with the suspended particles using a spray nozzle. The liquid used is generally water.   • IMO(International Maritime Organization) continues to strengthen environmental regulations on exhaust gases such as CO2, NOx, SOx. As for sulfur oxides, from 1 January 2020, all ships on international voyages must use fuel with a sulfur content of 0.5% or less. Or, it is obligatory to use an exhaust gas treatment device that has the same effect. Shipping companies are using low-sulfur oil, replacing them with LNG fuel, or installing scrubbers that suppress sulfur oxide emissions. In the case of ships using bunker C oil, the load on the engine is lower when entering and departing, so the exhaust gas pressure is lowered and the scrubber cannot be properly utilized. Therefore, diesel oil with low sulfur content is used when entering and leaving the coast. When diesel oil is used, exhaust gas is directly discharged through the control system and piping system, and when bunker C oil is used, sulfur oxides are reduced by scrubbers through other control systems and piping systems to discharge exhaust gas. Accordingly, a company has developed a system called a three-way damper valve that can control exhaust gas emissions while integrating these two control systems and piping systems into one. In this study, the control characteristics of the integrated exhaust gas control system and structural safety against external loads in a high-temperature exhaust gas environment were reviewed.

오일 스크러버 및 집진장치를 통한 바이오매스 가스화 공정 발생 타르 및 입자 제거 연구 (Simultaneous Treatment of Tar and Particles Using Oil Scrubber and Bag Filter in Biomass Gasification)

  • 가스화(gasification)는 바이오매스로부터 에너지를 얻을 수 있는 방법 중 하나로 열화학적 변환을 통해 수소, 일산화탄소, 메탄 등으로 조성된 가연성 가스인 'producer gas'를 생산할 수 있다. 하지만 producer gas와 함께 타르(tar)를 비롯한 ash 등의 입자상 물질이 함께 생성돼, 발전 터빈이나 연소 엔진 등에 유입되어 고장을 일으키거나 배관 등에 축적되어 막힘 현상 등을 야기하므로 제거가 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 producer gas 중 타르 및 입자 제거를 위해 오일 스크러버(oil scrubber)와 집진장치를 도입하였다. 흡수용매로써 타르를 효과적으로 제거가 가능한 대두유를 사용하였고, 스크러버의 용매 온도에 따라 제거효율이 어떻게 변화하는지 실험을 통해 관찰하였다. 집진장치에는 타르로 인한 필터 눈 막힘 현상 등의 문제를 방지하기 위해 pre-coating 기술을 도입하였다. Pre-coating에 사용할 물질로써 분말 소석회와 목탄계 활성탄(wood char)을 사용하였으며, 타르(tar)를 비롯한 입자 평균 제거 효율은 소석회를 pre-coating 물질로 사용 시 86%, 활성탄의 경우 80%로 나타났다. 스크러버와 집진장치를 동시에 사용한 경우에는 평균 제거효율이 소석회는 88%, 활성탄의 경우 83%로 나타났다.

Comparative Analysis of SOx Emission-Compliant Options for Marine Vessels from Environmental Perspective

  • With growing concerns over air pollutions attributed to shipping activities, the international maritime organization has enacted a series of stringent regulations. In particular, MARPOL Annex IV Reg. 16 requires sulfur contents from exhaust gases of marine engines to be progressively reduced. To comply with this regulation, three feasible options have been introduced: using LNG as a marine fuel, using heavy fuel oil with the scrubber system, and using the marine gas oil (a type of low sulfur fuel oil). For the objectives of this paper, the holistic environmental impacts pertinent to these options were investigated and compared in ways that the flows of energy and emission were tracked and quantified through the life cycle of the ship. Research findings obtained from a case study with a large bulk carrier showed that the use of the scrubber system to purify heavy fuel oil would produce relatively fewer amounts of emissions attributing to global warming than other two options. On the other than, the use of LNG would be the way to operate the ship in a cleaner way in terms of reducing the acidification, eutrophication, and photochemical effects. Throughout the analysis, the excellence of life cycle assessment was proven to shift the environmental impact of marine systems from the short-term view to the long-term one.

침엽수를 이용한 암모니아 가스 제거효율 연구 (Study of ammonia-gas removal′s characteristics using wood-material)

  • This paper was investigated to clarify the possibility of ammonia-gas removal by essential oil. First of all, the chemical analysis was performed to analyze the composition of an essential oil by GC-MS. The monoterpenes in an essential oil react with ammonia by neutralization and their reaction mechanism was elucidated. Based on their chemical neutralized reaction, the removal efficiencies of ammonia gas were studied to derive the optimal conditions in the scrubber tower such as optimal temperature and pH. The experimental result shows that the removal efficiency of ammonia gas was achieved over 80 % by the misty aerosol dispersion of scrubber tower.

SPME법을 이용한 식물정유 성분분석을 통한 유해가스 제거 특성연구 (Study of Toxic Gas Removal Characteristics by Chemical Analysis of Essential Oil using SPME Method)

  • 본 논문은 식물정유를 이용해 유해가스를 처리하는 경우에 식물정유의 주요구성성분을 파악하고 이를 통해 처리효율을 규명하는데 연구하였다. 또한 식물정유와 암모니아 가스에 의한 암모니아 제거반응 메카니즘을 규명하였으며 그 결과는 아래와 같다. 1) 암모니아 가스는 중화반응에 의해 처리되는 경우에 식물정유의 화학구조에서 알코올기, 알데히드기 그리고 에스터기가 관여한다는 것을 밝혀냈다. 실험결과 앞서 언급한 화학작용기가 포함되어 있는 경우에 암모니아 가스와 중화반응으로 염을 형성하여 유해가스 제거과정을 갖는다 2) 암모니아가스를 제거하는 중화반응의 경우에 온도와 pH에 따라 처리효율을 크게 달라졌으며 온도는 높은 온도보다는 적정 온도에서 제거효율이 거의 98%이상 제거되었으며 적정 pH는 pH가 중성인 경우에 최고의 처리효율이 얻어졌다. 3) 암모니아 가스의 처리효율은 식물정유을 통해 20분 이내에 암모니아 가스 처리 효율이 98% 이상 처리되는 것으로 나타났다.

  • 화석연료의 고갈과 환경문제를 대응하기 위한 대체에너지 중 재생가능하고 탄소중립(Carbon-neutral)자원인 바이오매스 (Biomass)를 연료로 이용하는 연구가 진행되고 있다. 바이오매스를 사용하는 대부분의 에너지 생산 시스템은 열화학전환방법이 대표적이다. 이 가운데 가스화 기술을 이용해 합성가스 (syngas)를 생산해 보일러나 엔진 등에 적용하여 열과 전기를 생산한다. 하지만 합성가스 (syngas)를 생산하는 과정에서 타르 (tar)가 발생되며 낮은 온도에서 응축되기 때문에 배관 및 엔진 등에 막힘 현상을 일으켜 공정 효율을 감소시키는 문제를 야기한다. 타르를 제거하기 위해 대부분의 가스화 공정에서 물을 이용한 wet scrubber를 사용하고 있는데 효율이 낮은 문제점이 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 물과 oily material (soybean oil, waste cooking oil, mineral oil)을 이용하여 제거효율이 높은 순으로 나타내자면 Soybean oil>Waste Cooking Oil>Mineral oil>Water 순서로 나타났고 제거효율은 각각 약 97%, 약 70%, 약 63%, 약 30%의 효율을 보여주었으며 식물성 오일 종류인 soybean oil을 사용하였을 때 타르 제거 효율이 가장 높았다.

The Effect of Emission Control Using Electrolytic Seawater Scrubber

  • It is well known that SOx and NOx concentration has a considerable influence on the $N_2O$ emission of the greenhouse gas properties. The quantity of SOx generated during combustion, on fuel specific basis, is directly related to the sulfur content of the fuel oil. However, restricting the fuel oil sulfur content is only a partial response to limiting the overall quantity of SOx emissions, as there remains no over control on the fuel oil consumption other than the commercial pressure which have always directed the attention. This study was carried out as a new basic experiment method of emission control, manly targeted to the vessel. In the experiment, where the scrubbing was achieved through spray tower with high alkaline water made from the electrolysis of seawater, the combined action was to neutralize the exhaust gases (SOx, PM, CO etc.), dilute it, and wash it out. The results showed that SOx reduction of around 95 percent or over could be achieved when using in the high alkaline water, and also leaded to a reduction in the stability of the each pollutant components including the PM (Particulate Matter). The results suggest that the seawater electrolysis method has a very effective reduction of emissions without heavy cost, or catalysts particularly on board.
