  • This paper was provided to help in detecting defects in power transformer. For this purpose, a partial discharge cell was designed and manufactured as a discharge source to simulate particle defected paper-oil insulation in power transformer. Experimental set-up for measuring PD signals was described. Magnitude of electromagnetic wave signals and corresponding amount of apparent discharge were measured simultaneously against phase of applied voltage to the discharge cell. Frequency range and pattern of PRPD(Phase Resolved Partial Discharge) of partial discharge signals were examined and analyzed. The results will be contributed to build the defect database of power transformer and to decrease the substation faults.

  • Moisture contents measurement is frequently used as one of parameters for degradation diagnosis of transformer insulation. In general Karl-Fisher method is mainly used for moisture contents till now. But this method is inconvenient because of dismounting transformer for sampling oil or paper, and also partial sampling. At latest Recovery Voltage Method(RVM) is noticed for complement of this method. RVM can directly estimate moisture contents of transformer insulations in field without dismounting transformer. In this paper the accelerated aging process of oil-paper samples have been investigated at a temperature up to 140$^{\circ}C$ for 500 hours. The oil-paper insulation samples have been measured at intervals of 100 hours. Next to, we have estimated moisture contents using both Karl-Fisher Titration Method and RVM. And we have compared with Karl-Fisher Titration Method and RVM for estimating moisture contents. At last we have verified reliability of RVM which is new measurement method.

  • Faults of cellulosic insulations greatly affect the life span of oil immersed transformers because their performance recovery is impossible. Therefore, the reliable diagnosis technologies are needed for detection of the faults. Dissolved gas analysis technologies using CO and $CO_2$ gases have been widely used for fault diagnosis of cellulosic insulations. In this research, we described Degradation diagnosis of insulation paper CO and $CO_2$ gases in oil immersed Transformers using. We considered the distribution characteristics of CO, $CO_2$ gases' concentrations and ratios of $CO_2$/CO not only in serviced transformers but in experiments with typical fault causes such as heat, partial discharge and moisture. As result, the reliability of diagnosis results for the cellulosic insulations can be improved when the concentrations of CO, $CO_2$ and the ratio of CO/$CO_2$ satisfy each diagnosis criterion at a tim

  • Within serviced period of time in transformer, thermal stress is the most influential parameter affecting the aging behavior of an insulation system. The thermal stress on the insulation system may occur from operation in a high temperature environment due to Joule's heat at winding coils. This paper describes a development of capacitive sensor and preventive diagnosis techniques for electrical insulating oil, widely used for power and distribution transformer. To survey the dielectric properties of the virgin and used mineral insulating oil, we utilized the highly precise measuring system of KRISS. And the results were used to determine the design factors of the sensor. To evaluate diagnosis by the sensor, we performed accelerated aging test about insulating oils. The condition of aged specimens were investigated by measurements of relative permittivity i.e. capacitance change by capacitive sensor.

  • Electrical insulation is one of the most important parts in a high voltage apparatus. Traditionally mineral oils and synthetic esters have been widely used as dielectric coolants for power transformers. Recently, researchers are interested in the environmentally friendly vegetable oil from the environmental viewpoint. This paper reports on the synthesis and characterization of soybean based ester oils. Two different types of soybean based transformer oils, named as methyl ester and isopropyl ester were synthesized. The synthesis of these esters was achieved by transesterification reactions between soybean oil and alcohol in the presence of catalyst. The GC and NMR spectroscopic analysis of the esters have been performed. It was observed that isopropyl ester has better thermal resistance than methyl ester by TGA. Also, two esters have a good breakdown voltage and electrical resistance.

  • This paper presents the insulation design of 345kV OF cable normal joint which is essential to construction of underground transmission system. The insulation designs of stress relief cone, pencilling and sleeve were proposed in this paper, and the final insulation design was decided by the results of the electric field and thermal analysis using FEM. It is shown that the designed normal using proves the effect when the developing test is carried out to construct 345kV OF cable if the domestic underground transmission system.

  • This paper dealt with the frequency spectrum analysis of acoustic signal produced by partial discharge (PD) in insulation oil and the positioning of PD occurrence to apply in diagnosis of oil insulated transformers. Three types of electrode system ; the needle-plane, the plane-plane, and the wire-wire structure were assembled to simulate partial discharges in oil insulated transformers. A low-noise amplifier and a decoupling circuit were designed to detect acoustic signal with high sensitivity The frequency spectrum of the acoustic signal were 50 kHz ${\sim}$ 260 kHz in the needle-plane, 50 kHz ${\sim}$ 250 kHz in the plane-plane, and 45 kHz${\sim}$195 kHz in the wire-wire electrode system. Their peak frequencies were 145 kHz, 130 kHz and 114 kHz, respectively The position of PD occurrence was calculated by the time difference of arrival (TOA) using three acoustic emission (AE) sensors, and we could find the position within the error of 1 % in the experimental apparatus.

  • Recently, demands for the reduction of noise generated by transformers have been increasing. Almost all the noise generated by a transformer is a result of magnetostrictive vibration in the core. The noise radiates into the atmosphere from the tank through the insulation oil. One method of reduction such a noise is to build a free-standing enclosure of concrete and steel plates around the transformer. However, this method has some disadvantages, for example, a large area is needed for equipment installation. In this paper, the vibration and noise effects which is transferred from reinforce channel to insulation panel generated by transformer have been identified for the several kinds of insulation panel shape and damping sheet experimentally.

  • The electrical and chemical characteristics in transformer insulations are changed due to thermal stress. In the chemical property, as the Kraft paper ages, the cellulose polymer chains breakdown into shorter lengths with a corresponding decrease in both tensile strength and degree of polymerization(DP). Furthermore, cellulous chains breakdown is accompanied by an increase in the content of various furanic compounds within the dielectric liquid. It is known that furanic components in transformer oil come only from the decomposition of insulating paper rather than from the oil itself. Therefore the analysis of furan products provides a complementary technique to dissolved gas analysis for monitoring transformers when we evaluate the aging of insulating paper by the total concentration of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide dissolved in oil only. In this paper the accelerated aging process of oil--paper samples have been investigated at a temperature up to $140^{\circ}C$ for 500 hours. The oil-paper insulation samples have been measured at intervals of 100 hours. For analysis we used high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC) in accordance with IEC 61198 method.

  • Electro-wetting display (EWD) that displays information by controling movement of fluid is one of the strong candidates for electronic paper display (EPD). In EWD cell. the movement of oil which locates between hydrophobic insulation layer and deionized water is rather random, which makes it difficult to realize gray scale, fast response time, and good color characteristics. In this paper, we investigated how to control the oil movement in specific one direction by surface treatment and pattered electrodes. From these experiments, we could control oil movement in a desired direction.
