선미관 밀봉장치 개발에 관한 연구 (I) - 맆 시일을 중심으로- (A Study on the Development of Ship's Stern Tube Sealing System(I) -Based on Lip Seals-)

  • Lip type stern tube sealing systems have used in almost all the middle or large ships which are being constructed in these days. It seems that the pressure fluctuation of the seal ring interspace, the cross-section profile and the materials quality of the seal rings have great effects on the sealing fuction of this sealing system. In this paper, the mechanical movement of lip seal ring which plays the most important role in stern tube sealing system and the possibility of leakage caused by pressure fluctuation are studied by theory and experiment. Using the finite element method for the axi-symetric object which receives the torsional load, the displacement and stress analysis of the seal rings, and also the possibility of crack occurance is checked by theoretical analysis. If the force which seal ring lip periphery receives is too small, there will be the possibility of leakage caused by the pressure fluctuation of the seal ring interspace, and if this force is too large, the frictional force between the seal ring and the liner will become problematical. The possibility of leakage caused by hardening of seal ring materials and creep phenomena of tested seal rings are also examined. The trial seal rings were designed and manufactured using the program of displacement and stress analysis developed in this study and the experimental apparatus to test the trial seal rings was also designed and manufactured. This trial seal rings were fitted in the experimental apparatus which was made in the same form as an actual stern tube. The one side of this apparatus was filled with sea water and the other side of it was filled with the lubricating oil. The leakage of oil and sea water was checked and the temperature was measured, rotating the propeller shaft at the constant velocity by D.C. motor. It was proved that the trial seal rings made in Viton rubber functioned excellenty but the trial seal rings made in N.B.R. rubber had problem in its durability.

자동차 엔진 프론트부의 PTFE 오일씰의 성능평가 (Performance Evaluation of PTFE Oil-seal for Automotive Engine Front Part)

  • This study analyzed the mechanical characteristics and evaluated their subsequent performance for two types of seals which reinforced characteristics with lower friction and anti-wear functions among the foremost important features in the automotive engine seals; one with the addition of glass fiber to PTFE(Polytetrafluoro ethylene); the other with the addition of self-lubricant molybdenumin addition to the glass fiber. Based on the configuration design of seal installed to the front part in the automotive engine, this study carried out interpretations on the stress and reaction for those two types of oil seals to compare the maximum stress and contact load generated from the seal steel, rubber and PTFE lip. This study also verified the stress concentration and anti-wear performance through the coefficient of friction, torque and durability test by producing two types of PTFE seals actually.

  • Sealing of lubricat-air mixture in the high performance machining conte is one of most the important characteristics to carry out enhanced lubrication. High speed spindle requires non-contact type of sealing mechanism. Evaluating an optimum seal design to minimize leakage is concerned in the aspect of flow control. Effect of geometry and leakage path are evaluated according to variation of sealing geometry, Velocity, pressure, turbulence intensity of profile is calculated to fina more efficient geometry and variables. This offers a methodological way of enhancement seal design for high speed spindle. The working fluid is regarded as two phases that are mixed flow of oil phase and air phase. It is more reasonable to simulate an oil jet or oil mist type high speed spindle lubrication. Turbulence and compressible flow model are used to evaluate a flow characteristic, This paper arranges a geometry of mostly used non-contact type seal and analyzes leakage characteristics to minimize a leakage on the same sealing area.

씰 투스 간극이 틸팅 패드 저어널 베어링 손실과 온도에 미치는 영향 (Effect on Seal Tooth Clearance on Power Loss and Temperature of Tilting Pad Journal Bearing)

  • Tilting pad journal bearing is widely used for steam turbines because of its excellent dynamic stability. As the turbine capacity increases, power loss in the bearings becomes a matter of concern. Power loss in tilting pad journal bearings can be reduced by increasing the bearing clearance and reducing the pad arc length. In this study, the tilting pad journal bearing is tested by changing the seal tooth clearance to verify the static characteristics of the bearing. Bearing power loss and bearing metal temperature are evaluated to compare the bearing's performance and reliability for several test cases. The test bearing is a tilting pad journal bearing with 300.62mm inner diameter and 120.00mm active length. The bearing power loss, its metal temperature, and oil film thickness are measured and evaluated based on the rotor's rotational speed, oil flow rate, and bearing load. Test results show that a tilting pad journal bearing with large seal tooth clearance has 40% lower power loss compared with a bearing with a small seal tooth clearance. As the seal tooth clearance is increased, the power loss of the tilting pad journal bearing decreases. However, with respect to the bearing metal temperatures, a detuning point is observed that makes the minimum bearing metal temperature. Moreover, as the seal tooth clearance is increased, the oil film thickness increases due to high viscosity.

  • The purpose of this paper is to study and analyze the failure examples on tribological characteristics of an automotive steering system. In this failure study, the grease leakage may stick leaked grease, dust, and wear particles between pinion and rack gears in mechanical steering system. In the case of seal failures such as a rod seal, o-ring and oil seals, the gear box and oil pump do not operate properly due to lack of oils. This means that oil pump does not supply a working fluid and produce a normal oil pressure of the steering system. This leads to leak a working fluid from the seals and produce a wear between pinion and rack gears. Especially, the leaked oil is usually mixed with internal wear particles and foreign dust/fine sands. Thus no leakage of working oils is very important design concepts, which is strongly related to the sealing components and smoothly operating of the mechanical friction parts of power steering system.

유한요소해석과 다구찌 방법에 의한 디스크 캘리퍼 씰 홈의 형상 최적화에 관한 연구 (A Study on Shape Optimization for Seal Groove of Disc Caliper using Finite Element Method and Taguchi's Method)

  • A typical disk brake system consists of caliper housing, piston, seal and two pads etc. The configuration of seal groove, dimension of piston and seal, and seal material properties are important ones for brake performance, as these affect the retraction of piston. The rubber seal is designed to perform dual functions of sealing the brake oil at brake-applied and retracting the caliper piston at brake-released. In this paper, the seal stress is analyzed using Finite Element Method and experiment is conducted by Taguchi's Method. We attempt to quantify the critical design factors in the seal groove and evaluate their impact on some of brake performance factors. The investigation obtained from this study can not only enhance the seal groove design optimization, but also reduce product prototype testing and development time.

비접촉 시일의 형상에 관한 누설특성 해석

  • Evaluating an optimum seal design to minimize leakage is concerned in the aspect of flow control. Flow is characterized into five categories according to its leakage path. Effect of geometry and leakage path are evaluated according to variation of sealing geometry. To simulate an oil jet or oil mist type high speed spindle lubrication, the working fluid is regarded as two phases that are mixed flow of oil phase and air phase. Both of the turbulence and the compressible flow model were introduced in CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis. This offers a methodological way of enhancement seal design for high speed spindle.

LP차량의 주행거리에 따른 스템시일의 누설특성에 관한 실험적 연구 (Experimental Study on the Leakage Characteristics of Stem Seals Depending on the Driving Distance of the LPG Vehicle)

  • 본 논문은 LPG 차량의 주행거리에 따른 스템시일의 오일누설 특성에 대한 실험적 연구결과를 제공하고자 한다. 캠축의 속도와 오일의 온도가 증가하여도 40,000 km 이하의 주행거리를 갖는 스템시일에서는 엔진오일의 누설에 큰 영향을 미치지 못하는 것으로 나타났다. 반면에 주행거리가 50,000 km 이상 100,000 km 정도에서 사용한 스템시일의 경우는 스템시일의 밀봉성에 영향을 미쳐 누설이 급격하게 증가하는 것으로 나타났다. 이것은 포핏밸브와 스템시일 사이의 미끄럼마찰 접촉면을 따라서 오일이 누설되기 때문에 발생한 것이다. 실험결과에 의하면, 현재 LP차량에서 사용하고 있는 스템시일은 주행거리가 $50,000{\sim}60,000\;km$ 정도에서 교환하는 것이 누유특성을 고려하면 바람직하다. 따라서 포핏밸브의 누유를 차단하기 위해 사용하고 있는 스템시일은 보다 향상된 내구성과 수명연장을 위해 재설계되어야 한다.

  • The existing compressor steel seal used in automotive air-conditioner has the problem of oil leakage and the deterioration in shielding performance, due to the abrasion and the corrosion of the material. A new type of polymer resin seal is studied in the research. The polymer resin seal has the characteristics of high anti-abrasiveness and anti-corrosiveness, which can overcome the deflects of the steel seal. In addition, the seal needs lower manufacturing cost and is appropriate to mass production, because it is made by the injection molding method requiring no mechanical processing. The profile generation program for seal mold has been developed using the gradient method, and the molding characteristics of the seal have analyzed through the flow analysis and the warpage analysis. The program has been verified by comparing the analysis results with the measured data of the test product. The research might be said to provide the basic method to produce the polymer resin seals with various types and dimensions.
