Analysis of Factors Influencing the Composition of Oil Tanker Fleet of Domestic Refinery Companies

  • The international oil majors have been reducing the size of their own oil tanker fleet since early 1980s. Like international oil majors, the Korean refineries are becoming more dependent on tanker chartering rather than tanker ownership for their oil transportation since the 1990s. They also prefer spot charter to time charter and this kind of trend has continued up to now. Consequently, this paper attempted to find the factors influencing changes in tanker fleet composition. To attain the object of the paper, an empirical study is adopted using the ten decision-making factors derived from preceeding studies. The findings are that MARPOL and OPA 90, and transportation costs are the most important factors influencing an oil tanker fleet composition.

한국의 석유소비, 해양유류유출사고, 경제성장의 인과관계 분석 (Causality Analysis of Oil Consumption, Oil-spills, and Economic Growth in Korea)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the causal relationship among oil consumption, oil-tanker accidents, and economic growth, and to derive policy implications from the results. Therefore, this paper attempts to analyze the short term, long term, and strong causality factors pertaining to the relationship between oil consumption, oil-tanker accidents, and economic growth in Korea using time-series techniques and annual data for the 1984-2016 period. Tests for unit roots, co-integration, and Granger-causality based on an error-correction model are presented. The results show that bidirectional causality exists between oil consumption and oil-tanker accidents, between economic growth and oil consumption, and between oil-tanker accidents and economic growth. The study shows that oil was used as a core energy source during the rapid economic growth of Korea in the past, and that this caused the number of oil-tanker accidents to rise as oil consumption increased.

  • 우리나라 정유회사는 1980년대부터 오일운송을 소유 오일탱커보다도 용선에 의존하는 비율이 높아지고 있으며, 용선중에서도 정기용선보다는 스팟(spot)용선을 선호하고 있다. 그러면 국내 정유회사가 어민 의사결정요인에 의하여 자사 소유 탱커선보다도 용선에 의존하여 오일운송을 하는지, 혹은 전적으로 용선에만 의존하여 오일운송을 하는지를 규명하고자 하는 것이 본 연구의 목적이다. 따라서 연구의 목적을 달성하기 위하여 선행연구에서 3가지 절차, 즉 선행연구, 설문조사 그리고 전문가 의견조사를 거쳐 도출된 10개의 의사결정요인을 활용하여 본 논문에서는 어떠한 요인들이 정유사의 선대구성에 영향을 미쳤는지를 설문과 면접법에 의하여 실증분석하였다. 연구 대상인 국내 정유회사는 모집단인 현대 및 인천정유, LG-Caltex, S-oil 그리고 SK 등 4개이며 분석의 초점은 각 요인이 정유회사의 탱커선대의 구성에 미치는 영향 즉, 탱커 소유와 용선의 증감 추이와 용선형태의 변화에 두었다. 분석결과 운송비용상승요인과 국제규정인 MARPOL과 OPA 90요인이 탱크선대구성에 가장 큰 영향을 미치고 있었다.

유조선의 상태평가계획 검사를 위한 이동로봇의 개발 (Development of Mobile Robot for CAS inspection of Oil Tanker)

  • It is dangerous that an inspector overhauls defects and condition of the inner parts of an oil tanker because of many harmful gases, complex structures, and etc. However, these inspections are necessary to many oil tankers over old years. In this study, we proposed the design of mobile robot for inspection of CAS in oil tanker. The developed CAS inspection mobile robot has four modules, a measurement module of oil tanker's thickness, a corrosion inspection module, a climbing module of the surface on a wall, and a monitoring module. In order to get over at a check position, the driving control algorithm was developed. Magnetic wheels are used to move on the surface of a wall. This study constructed a communication network and the monitoring program to operate the developed mobile robot from remote sites. In order to evaluate the inspection ability, the experiments about performance of CAS inspection using the developed mobile robot have been carried out.

유조선의 선체손상 시 기름의 해상유출에 대한 실험적 연구 (An Experimental Study on the Oil Spillage of Damaged Oil Tanker)

  • Crude oil carriers or product oil carriers are confronted with sea pollution due to hull damage from various accidents. To reduce the oil spillage of tankers, IMO(International Maritime Organization) and OPA 90(Oil Pollution Act 1990) adopted the hull structures of double skin type. In this study, oil spillage test of the double skin tanker with 1/100 scaled model was carried out under damaged condition due to collision and grounding accidents. A new structural type of oil tanker was also tested with pipe and valve system arranged in double side and single bottom hulls. Their results were compared with that of conventional type double hull on the view point of ship safety and oil spillage.

  • Marine casualties and environmental pollution have increased recently. Especially, the rate of incident of Coastal tankers is higher, but the assessment tool for safety management system is lack in this fields. However Oil Major Vetting System being professional assessment tool for tanker is widely applied in ocean going tanker by the worldwide Oil Majors. According to the analysis of the marine tankers' incidents which applied Oil Major Vetting System, the incidents were reduced rapidly for recent about 5 years. Using Oil Major Vetting System is helped to improve safety management and to prevent marine incidents. Therefore if applying a parts of the Oil Major Vetting Systems to the coastal tankers' Safety Management System, the Coastal tankers incidents would be reduced and improved gradually.

Comparative analysis among deterministic and stochastic collision damage models for oil tanker and bulk carrier reliability

  • The incidence of collision damage models on oil tanker and bulk carrier reliability is investigated considering the IACS deterministic model against GOALDS/IMO database statistics for collision events, substantiating the probabilistic model. Statistical properties of hull girder residual strength are determined by Monte Carlo simulation, based on random generation of damage dimensions and a modified form of incremental-iterative method, to account for neutral axis rotation and equilibrium of horizontal bending moment, due to cross-section asymmetry after collision events. Reliability analysis is performed, to investigate the incidence of collision penetration depth and height statistical properties on hull girder sagging/hogging failure probabilities. Besides, the incidence of corrosion on hull girder residual strength and reliability is also discussed, focussing on gross, hull girder net and local net scantlings, respectively. The ISSC double hull oil tanker and single side bulk carrier, assumed as test cases in the ISSC 2012 report, are taken as reference ships.

  • 최근 우리나라를 비롯해 세계 여러 나라에서 Oil Tanker에 의한 사고가 빈번히 일어나고 있다. 이와 같은 사고의 대책으로 Oil Tanker의 2중화 등 여러 가지 면에서 대책에 총력을 기울이고 있지만, 일단 사고가 발생하게 되면 이러한 모든 대책은 무용지물이 되고 만다. 사고 발생 후 확산되는 Oil의 집적에 현재 일반적으로 사용되어지는 도구인 Oil Fence는 다양한 형태의 많은 개발품이 사용되어 지고 있지만, 이러한 Oil Fence 및 Oil 회수 장치에 의해 회수되어지는 양은 전체 확산되어지는 양의 고작 15%정도에 그친다.
