  • The monopile-friction wheel hybrid foundation is an innovative solution for offshore structures which are mainly subjected to large lateral eccentric load induced by winds, waves, and currents during their service life. This paper presents an extensive numerical analysis to investigate the lateral load and moment bearing performances of hybrid foundation, considering various potential influencing factors in sand-overlaying-clay soil deposits, with the complex lateral loads being simplified into a resultant lateral load acting at a certain height above the mudline. Finite element models are generated and validated against experimental data where very good agreements are obtained. The failure mechanisms of hybrid foundations under lateral loading are illustrated to demonstrate the effect of the friction wheel in the hybrid system. Parametric study shows that the load bearing performances of the hybrid foundation is significantly dependent of wheel diameter, pile embedment depth, internal friction angle of sand, loading eccentricity (distance from the load application point to the ground level), and the thickness of upper sandy layer. Simplified empirical formulae is proposed based on the numerical results to predict the corresponding lateral load and moment bearing capacities of the hybrid foundation for design application.

  • In the prediction of response of a pile in soil, numerical approaches such as a finite element method are generally applied due to complicate nonlinear behaviors of soils. However, the numerical methods based on the finite elements require heavy efforts in pile and soil modelling and also take long computing time. So their usage is limited especially in the early design stage in which principal dimensions and properties are not specified and tend to vary. On the contrary, theoretical approaches adopting linear approximations for soils are relatively simple and easy to model and take short computing time. Therefore, if they are validated to be reliable, they would be applicable in predicting responses of a pile in soil, particularly in early design stage. In case of wind turbines regarded in this study, it is required to assess their natural frequencies in early stages, and in this simulation the supporting pile inserted in soil could be replaced with a simplified elastic boundary condition at the bottom end of the wind turbine tower. To do this, analysis for a pile in soil is performed in this study to extract the spring constants at the top end of the pile. The pile in soil can be modelled as a beam on elastic spring by assuming that the soils deform within an elastic range. In this study, it is attempted to predict pile deformations and influence factors for lateral loads by means of the beam-on-spring model. As two example supporting structures for wind turbines, mono pile and suction pile models with different diameters are examined by evaluating their influence factors and validated by comparing them with those reported in literature. In addition, the deflection profiles along the depth and spring constants at the top end of the piles are compared to assess their supporting features.

  • This study was conducted to propose a reasonable requirement regulation of cutoff barriers composed of bottom layer and vertical barrier of offshore landfill for the prevention of contaminant leakage. The bottom layer was composed of impermeable clay layer; vertical walls were composed of double walls; outer wall was composed of steel sheet pile which registed against outer force; cutoff vertical barrier took the role of inner wall. Seepage-advection-dispersion numerical analysis was conducted using SEEP/W and CTRAN/W programs under steady and unsteady flows. The results showed that the values calculated under steady flow showed higher migration of pollutant than those of unsteady flow. The values calculated under steady flow are more valid from a design point of view. Under steady flow and the bottom clay layer and when the vertical barrier are homogeneous and completely well installed, respectively, the minimum required cutoff regulations for hydraulic conductivity, thickness, and embedded depth of the bottom clay layer and vertical barrier were suggested.

  • In this paper, the empirical relations of skin friction and end bearing resistance with the results of site investigation in soft rock are proposed through the analysis of bi-directional pile load tests of rock socketed drilled shafts performed at large offshore bridge foundations and high-rise building projects (13 test piles in 4 projects). The site investigation and drilling for bi-directional pile load tests were performed at the centers of test piles, and f-w curves for skin friction and q-w curves for end bearing were plotted based on load-transfer measurements. From the above curves, the empirical relations of skin friction and end bearing resistance with the results of site investigation depending on the mobilized displacement are determined by multiple regression analysis and compared with previous studies. Since the f-w and q-w curves of rock-socketed piles in Korea show hardening behavior according to mobilized displacement, the developed empirical relations by the mobilized displacement are more reasonable than those of previous studies which could not consider the mobilized displacement and suggested the ultimate capacity with unconfined compressive strength only. Particularly, the developed equations correlated with unconfined compressive strength show the best correlations among the equations correlated with other parameters.

  • In order to fulfill the needs of reliable and economically feasible foundation, engineers should consider not only the working load that can endure extreme conditions but also apprehending precise behavior of continuous dynamic load while designing the foundation of offshore wind power generators. To actualize the foundation, a model pile was made in miniature. Also, calibration chamber was made and a 500mm height of sand-bed was made to perform "static lateral load experiment" and "repetitive loading experiment", total of two Lateral load tests. As a result, in Static Lateral load test, the bigger length/diameter of model pile led an increase in load displacement. However, when performing "Cyclic Lateral load test", the increase in number of under loading led the decrease in horizontal displacement from each repeated lateral load. While performing Static Lateral load test and repeated loading experiment, we could observe the decreasing in the rate of ultimate lateral load capacity increase of the pile. Also, it turned out that the higher relative density of the ground, the lower ultimate lateral load capacity by repeated horizontal loading.

  • Monopiles, used as one foundation option for offshore wind turbines, are usually subjected to great cyclic lateral loads due to wind and wave. In this study, model pile load tests were performed using calibration chamber and three model piles with different pile lengths in order to investigate the behavior of laterally cyclic loaded piles driven into sand. Model test results show that the first loading cycle generates a bigger displacement than the following ones, and the permanent displacement of piles by one loading cycle decreases with increasing the number of cycles. 1-way cyclic loading causes the permanent displacement in the same direction as cyclic loading, whereas 2-way cyclic loading causes the permanent displacement in the reverse direction of initial loading. It is also observed that the permanent displacement of piles due to cyclic lateral loads increases with decreasing relative density of soil and with increasing the magnitude of cyclic loads. However, it is insensitive to the earth pressure ratio of soil and embedded pile length. In addition, based on the model pile load test results, equations for estimation of the permanent lateral displacement and rotation angle of piles due to 1-way cyclic lateral loads are proposed.

  • Sand compaction pile (SCP) is a ground improvement method which is used to secure the stability of the soft ground by using a type of replacement pile filled with coarse grained material. The behavior characteristics of the SCP, which is frequently used for improving both the onshore and offshore ground, is governed by the ground condition, the installation method, and replacement ratio. Therefore, the stability of the SCP in terms of the bearing capacity and displacement needs to be evaluated considering both the design values and in-situ conditions of construction site. In this study, numerical analysis is carried out based on the conditions of 00 revetment construction site in South Korea where unexpected displacement occurred during construction of SCP. Based on the analysis results, the displacement of the revetment structure according to the replacement ratio of the SCP was compared to the result calculated from design formulas. The results showed that the lateral displacement can be exceeded the reference value from proposed criteria regardless of increased replacement ratio of SPC. It is also confirmed that the behavior of the structure according to the replacement ratio of SPC in not reflected in the existing calculation methods. Therefore, the stability of the SCP composite ground should be examined through the site inspection after the SCP construction.
