  • Offshore software development by Korean companies is mainly led by big SI (System Integration) companies. They open Offshore Development Centers (ODC) in developing countries such as India, China, and Vietnam to source software development for their mother companies. Firms with ODC consider transferring knowledge such as business and cultural knowledge as the most complicated yet essential process for the success of offshore development. This study investigates whether the selection of a governance mechanism is related with knowledge transfer and thus the success of offshore development. The results of this study indicate that a hierarchical governance mechanism is appropriate for transferring company-specific, sensitive, complex knowledge in offshore software development.

  • This study has analyzed the scale, location, resource potential and feasibility of offshore wind farm scientifically and systematically based on the national wind map and GIS (Geographic Information System). For long-term wind power development, this study pursues siting strategy building, selection of target area and deciding development priority as well as the presenting a basis for assessment that are necessary for policy decision making by making theme layers under GIS environment. According to the analysis after organizing technological development by stages, even if only the most suitable sites are developed among the area of offshore wind farm candidates that can be developed under the current technological standard, it has been evaluated as being able to develop about 3 times of the wind power dissemination target until 2012. It is expected that about 5% of territorial water area can be developed in a short-term future while the southern offshore area possessing relatively favorable wind resource than the western offshore has been identified as the most feasible site. While about 23% of territorial water area has been classified as potential area for offshore wind farm development in a long-term future, even Jeju Island and offshore of Ulsan possessing excellent wind resource have been analyzed as feasible sites. The feasibility assessment of offshore wind farm development established by this study is expected to assist national strategy building for accomplishing the wind power dissemination target.

  • Offshore wind farms will contribute significantly to the renewable generation of electricity for the world. The economic development of wind farms depends, however, on development of efficient solutions to a number of technical issues, one of these being the foundations for the offshore turbines. We review here the results of recent research for wind turbine foundations. Also it is a short overview of some of the challenges facing the growth of offshore wind energy foundation technology.

  • This paper introduces a review and literature study of offshore engineering and constructions from 1920s to 2000s. The study was focused on the literature survey and the history of Brawn & Root and J. Ray McDermott in the Gulf of Mexico and other offshore areas. The fluctuations of oil and gas prices have been strongly influenced the development of offshore industry since its very beginning. Scientific projects on the space and under the earth had played very important roles in offshore development in 1950s and 1960s. Deepwater developmentshave been influenced by the computer assisted analysis and design in 1970s and 1980s. Innovative technology provided continuous developments of deepwater structures in 1990 and after.

  • The offshore wind power plants are watched as a new market to accomplish the needed energy, bringing technical and economical challenges. Advanced countries in the field of wind industry are now appling the 600 MPa, 150~200 mm thick high strength steel to offshore wind power plants. Moreover, the high efficient welding methods which is weldable ultra tick high strength steel with 1 pass welding are developed and applied in manufacturing the offshore wind tower. This article deals with the present world wide status of offshore power plants and the tendency of the development of high efficient welding technology for constructing the offshore wind tower. This article intends to offer the materials for development and raising of the domestic offshore wind power technology.

  • Offshore wind power development has been promoted in countries around the world to cope with global warming. Despite its many advantages, offshore wind power affects the marine environment during construction and operation. As a result, the reduction of fishing areas, changes in the habitat of marine animals, damage to fishing gear, and impeding the safety of fishing activities are occurring. If the offshore wind power generation project is carried out, a fishing damage investigation is nescssary. There are only four fishing damage investigations related to offshore wind power, which are being conducted similarly to the existing fishing damage investigation related to offshore construction. Therefore, this study reviewed and analyzed the report on fisheries damage investigation related to offshore wind power conducted in Korea and suggested problems and improvement measures accordingly.

  • After facing the fact such as fossil-fuel depletion, global warming, the Kyoto Protocol coming into force of mandatory reductions of carbon dioxide, the world is actively promoting the spread of the solar, wind, tidal, geothermal and other clean renewable energy technology development. Among them, wind power is the only alternative energy to secure a comparable price competition with fossil fuels because cheaper price power generation than other renewable energy when creating large-scale wind farm, thus wind power is the fastest growing industries in the world in the renewable energy field. Especially the offshore wind power is showing rapid growth as most of the wind power sector because of less changes of wind speed, no restrictions of land use, and large-scale development of offshore wind power. In this paper, the field of site selection and spatial location analysis techniques for development of large-scale offshore wind farm are discussed primarily. This paper shows overview of offshore wind power and establishment procedure for development of offshore wind farm.
