  • To construct in situ velocity-porosity relationships for oceanic basalt, considering crack features, P- and S-wave velocity measurements on basaltic samples obtained from the eastern flank of the Juan de Fuca Ridge were carried out under confining pressures up to 40 MPa. Assuming that the changes in velocities with confining pressures are originated by micro-crack closure, we estimated micro-crack aspect ratio spectra using the Kuster-$Toks{\ddot{o}}z$ theory. The result demonstrates that the normalised aspect ratio spectra of the different samples have similar characteristics. From the normalised aspect ratio spectrum, we then constructed theoretical velocity-porosity relationships by calculating an aspect ratio spectrum for each porosity. In addition, by considering micro-crack closure due to confining pressure, a velocity-porosity relationship as a function of confining pressure could be obtained. The theoretical relationships that take into account the aspect ratio spectra are consistent with the observed relationships for over 100 discrete samples measured at atmospheric pressure, and the commonly observed pressure dependent relationships for a wide porosity range. The agreement between the laboratory-derived data and theoretically estimated values demonstrates that the velocity-porosity relationships of the basaltic samples obtained from the eastern flank of the Juan de Fuca Ridge, and their pressure dependence, can be described by the crack features (i.e. normalised aspect ratio spectra) and crack closure.

  • The variations of catch of anchovy and saury due to oceanic climate change in the Korean Seas were studied. This study area was $31^{\circ}{\sim}38^{\circ}$ N and $124^{\circ}{\sim}132^{\circ}$ E. And data (seawater temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen) is used from NFRDI (National Fisheries Research and Development Institute) and SST (Sea Surface temperature) obtained to satellite images (NOAA/AVHRR) during 2000 to 2009. The spatial characteristics are analyzed by GIS (Geographic Information System). The results showed that the average of seawater temperature in the depth of 20m increased $1.45^{\circ}C$ in the South Sea and $0.83^{\circ}C$ in the East Sea, respectively. The maximal catch of anchovy was highest in summer (July~September) and winter (December~March), respectively, in compared with spring (April~June). Catch of anchovy has increased since 2000. The maximal catch of saury was highest in spring (May~June), in compared with spring (August~September). The increment of seawater temperature contributed to increase the catch of anchovy, but catch of saury was decrease in the same times.

  • To investigate the physical characteristics and variations of oceanic parameters in the tropical central North Pacific, oceanographic surveys were carried out in summer of 2006 and 2007. The survey periods were classified by Oceanic Ni$\tilde{n}$o Index as a weak El Ni$\tilde{n}$o in 2006 and a medium La Ni$\tilde{n}$a in 2007. The survey instruments were used to acquire data on CTD (Conductivity Temperature and Depth), XBT (Expendable Bathythermograph), and TSG (Thermosalinograph). The dominant temporal variation of surface temperature was diurnal. The diurnal variation in 2007, when the La Ni$\tilde{n}$a weather pattern was in place, was stronger than that in 2006. Surface salinity in 2006 was affected by a northwestward branch of North Equatorial Current, which implies that the El Ni$\tilde{n}$o affects surface properties in the North Equatorial Current region. Two salinity minimum layers existed at stations east of Chuuk in both year's observations. The climatological vertical salinity section along $180^{\circ}E$ shows that the two salinity minimum layers exist in $2^{\circ}N{\sim}12^{\circ}N$ region, consistent with our observations. Analysis of isopycnal lines over the salinity section implies that the upper salinity minimum layer is from intrusion of the upper part of North Pacific Intermediate Water into the lower part of South Pacific Subtropical Surface Water and the lower salinity minimum layer is from Antarctic Intermediate Water.

  • The oceanic effect on the coastal climate, the air temperature and the humidity, in Korea was studied by using the meteorological and the sea surface temperature data compiled from 1962 to 1981. The fluctuation of sea surface temperature plays an important role in determining the air temperature and the humidity in the coastal area, The sea surface temperature is higher than the air temperature from September to March in the western coastal area, and from September to April in the southern and the eastern coastal areas, It is found that in March the air temperature begins to surpass the sea ourface temperature in the western coastal area, and in April in the southern and the eastern coastal areas. On the basis of the multiple regression analysis it is found that the oceanic effect on the coastal climate, the air temperature and the humidity, in the western coastal area is different that in the southern and the eastern coastal areas.

  • Oceanic conditions of the Tsushima Warm Current (TWC) region in the southern area of the East Sea (Japan Sea) are examined using data obtained from a CREAMS (Circulation Research if the East Asian Marginal Seas) cruise in June 1996. In 1990s, a lower temperature appears in 1996 and in this period, two branches of the TWC exist and the first branch of the TWC flows inshore of the Japanese coastal region compared to that in the other years, especially in the shallower water layer at depth less than about 200 m. The TWC cored with the higher salinity (>34.6 psu) is clearly observed over the continental shelf in the Japanese coastal region and offshore and identified by geostrophic calculation. Intrusion of the TWC into the East Sea through the Korea Strait (the Tsushima Strait) makes the density structure in the water column change and the water mass in the TWC region is unstable based on BruntVaisala frequency.

  • For the study of oceanic surface current, this work presents a system design which is composed of three parts, a Global Positiong System(GPS) unit, a transmitter with radio frequency (RF) modem and an antenna which are housed in a plastic spherical buoy, and computerised of VHF receiving system. The key idea for this study is to employ a commercially available GPS on a drifting buoy and to utilize the receiver position information from the buoy in determining the Lagrangian motion of surface ocean waters. Great efforts has been paid to the system design which would demand several points in harsh conditions common in the sea surface, that is power supply problems housed inside of a plastic buoy, optimizing transmitting radio frequency which limits transmitting distance to a receiving station. for all these difficulties, the system appears to be promising in future oceanic applications and is considered to economical compared to ARGOS drift buoy which is being used by commercial base. We believe that the system needs to be improved in terms of several aspects such as a longer transmitting distance, a power supply and software. for the test experiments in situ, the system has employed off the coast of Ku Ryong Po int the southeast part of Korea and successfully collected the surface current data. The results are presented for two cases from 21 to 31, March 1994 and 21 to 25, June 1994 in terms of current statistics and trajectories of drifting buoys.

  • Several models predict large and potentially abrupt ocean circulation changes due to anthropogenic greenhouse-gas emissions. These circulation changes drive-in the models-considerable oceanic oxygen trend. A sound estimate of the observed oxygen trends can hence be a powerful tool to constrain predictions of future changes in oceanic deepwater formation, heat and carbon dioxide uptake. Estimating decadal scale oxygen trends is, however, a nontrivial task and previous studies have come to contradicting conclusions. One key potential problem is that changes in the historical observation network might introduce considerable errors. Here we estimate the likely magnitude of these errors for a subset of the available observations in the Southern Ocean. We test three common data analysis methods south of Australia and focus on the decadal-scale trends between the 1970's and the 1990's. Specifically, we estimate errors due to sparsely sampled observations using a known signal (the time invariant, temporally averaged, World Ocean Atlas 2001) as a negative control. The crossover analysis and the objective analysis methods are for less prone to spatial sampling location biases than the area averaging method. Subject to numerous caveats, we find that errors due to sparse sampling for the area averaging method are on the order of several micro-moles $kg^{-1}$. for the crossover and the objective analysis method, these errors are much smaller. For the analyzed example, the biases due to changes in the spatial design of the historical observation network are relatively small compared to the tends predicted by many model simulations. This raises the possibility to use historic oxygen trends to constrain model simulations, even in sparsely sampled ocean basins.

  • The pH, electric conductivity. and the major ionic components were analyzed for the precipitation samples collected at 1100 Site of Mt. Halla and Jeju city. The quality of analytical data was verified by the comparison of ion balances, conductivities and acid fractions, all of which correlation coefficients were over 0.952. The ionic strengths lower than 10$^{-4}$ M were found in 57 and 28% at 1100 Site and Jeju city respectively. The precipitation in Jeju city was influenced more by the oceanic effect than those in 1100 Site. The acidification of precipitation was caused mostly by S $O_4$$^{2-}$and N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ in both areas, and the organic acids have contributed to the acidity with only 7~8%. The neutralization factors by N $H_3$ were about 44 and 47% at the 1100 site and the Jeju city, respectively, whereas those by CaC $O_3$were 21 and 24%, and the free acidity were about 38 and 28% at two sites. From the investigation of seawater and soil enrichment factors, the S $O_4$$^{2-}$, N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ and N $E_4$$^{+}$ were immigrated by other sources rather than from the seawater or soil origins. but not in the case of $Mg^{2+}$, C $l^{[-10]}$ , N $a^{+}$, and $K^{+}$. Factor analysis has shown that the precipitation at the 1100 site had been influenced mostly by anthropogenic sources, followed by soil and sea-water sources. On the other hand, the precipitation at the Jeju city was mainly influenced by oceanic sources, followed by anthropogenic and soil sources.urces.

  • The relationships among long-term climatic change in the southern part of the Korean peninsula, oceanic conditions of the South Sea, Korea, and winter catches of major small pelagic fishes were analyzed using 33 years of time-series data from 1971-2003. In the early 1990s, winter climatic conditions in the southern part of the Korean peninsula shifted to a warmer regime with higher air temperature, weaker wind speed, and lower relative humidity. Also, winter sea surface temperature (SST) became consistently higher in the South Sea. The annual catch of major small pelagic fishes in the South Sea increased dramatically in the mid 1990s, whereas the catch of total fishes decreased in the late 1980s. In particular, the winter catch started to increase markedly in the late 1980s, and has remained over 120,000 M/T since the late 1990s. Correlation analysis of the winter catch of major small pelagic fishes and environmental factors showed that catch was correlated with air temperature (r=0.468, P< 0.01), wind speed (r=-0.732, P< 0.01), relative humidity (r=-0.73l, P< 0.01), and SST (r=0.672, P< 0.01). Multiple regression analysis between the winter catch of major small pelagic fishes (Y) and environmental factors (X) resulted in the equation: $Y=-0.017-0.217\;X_3-0.486\;X_4+0.325\;X_5(R^2=0.754,\;P<0.000)$.

  • Recently, There are increasing number of studies that apply multi-carrier method, a land mobile communication method, to underwater channel environment in order to enhance the performance of underwater communication. Therefore, in this paper, in order to design a new system with improved communication performance compared to the multi-carrier method in underwater communication, we present that the RS(Resource Spreading) FMT-OFDM system has a diversity and repetition effect from resource spreading. Moreover, we verify the performance of RS FMT-OFDM system and existing FMT-OFDM system through simulations after modeling communication channels and setting the system parameter based on the data measured from the real sea. Our result indicate that, compared to the existing FMT-OFDM system, there has been an improvement in communication performance by 12dB based on BER $10^{-3}$ we also discovered that communication performance improves as the resource spreading rate increases.
