Induced Morphological Changes in Larval Rock Bream, Oplegnathus fasciatus, under Starvation

  • Morphological changes in the reared rock bream, Oplegnathus fasciatus, from hatching to six days after hatching were examined during the early growth stage under starvation. All the larvae died within five days when feeding was delayed for three days after hatching. These results imply that initial larval food should be supplied within two days of hatching. Changes in the pectoral angle and the ratios of eye height to head height, gut height to standard length, and gut height to myotome height in the rock bream are alternative indicators for the identification of starving fish. These indicators might prove useful in evaluating the successful transition from endogenous to exogenous feeding in this species.

  • It has generally used the burial method for the protection methods of submarine cable. Especially in Korea, It has used the protection methods of various types according to fisheries and fishing implements. Present day, All the protection methods-burial, continuous concrete mattress, cast iron pipes, U-duct, concrete bags, Rock Berm, mortar bags, FCM apply to the submarine cable, but these methods just focus on the safety of submarine cable against the external damages not the characteristics of ocean environment and the protection of environment. This research is going to present the protection methods of submarine cable according as the characteristics of ocean environment-external damages, depth of water, seabed condition, wave power and the protection of environment.

  • Recent trends in U.S. ocean policy were briefly reviewed through the keywords in the documents from the three consecutive administrative offices of U.S. government since 2010. Many keywords was unchanged since 2010 implying that the confirm foundation of US ocean policy is not easily shaken. Among the administration-specific main drivers, emphases on Coastal and Marine Spatial Planning in 2010, Ocean Mapping in 2019, and the 2021 goal of conserving 30% by 2030 may profoundly affect the directions of U.S. ocean environment conservation policy. Decadal trends and implications in main key words of U.S. ocean policy as are reflected from the documents produced by the above three administrative offices were also shown to affect future perspectives of global ocean environment conservation policy as well as the corresponding Korean policies.

  • The ocean rock was crushed mainly by drop hammer and blasting. In recent years, because of farming and harbors extension, the ocean rock crushing method is changing to popular complaint solving type. Effective rock crushing methods of protecting environment are studied under consideration for topography, farming, structures, electronic equipment, environment protection arm near to rock crushing sector. Effective rock crushing methods are compared under consideration for crushing volume, rock quality, distribution, crushing speed. Effective rock crushing methods at once solving popular complaint and protecting ocean environment and building ocean structures, are compared according to the coast development.

  • The burial method has been generally used for the protection methods of submarine cable. Especially in Korea, various types of protection methods have been used according to fisheries and fishing implements. In these days, all the protection methods - burial, continuous concrete mattress, cast iron pipes, U-duct, concrete bags, rock berm, mortar bags and FCM(Flexible Concrete Mattress) are applied to the submarine cable, but these methods just focus not on the characteristics of ocean environment and the protection of environment but on the safety of submarine cable against the external damages. This research presents the protection methods of submarine cable according as the characteristics of ocean environment - external damages, depth of water, seabed condition and the protection of environment.

  • When the typhoons are passing over the ocean, the ocean environment has both physical and biological impacts on the East, South sea and Yellow sea of Korea. As a result of typhoon path, vertical mixing and upwelling injured colder subsurface water, and leaded to phytoplankton blooming along the typhoons. The ocean environment before and after a typhoon played an important role in the biological effect of sea surface. Although the magnitude of sea surface temperature (SST) gets cooler because of typhoon path, other physical and biophysical responses are quite different such as chlorophyll, K490 and SST. The purpose of this study is to compare with the typhoon path that influenced the Korean Peninsula and ocean environment parameters which were observed by ocean color remotely-sensed data. The MODIS data were used to assess the parameters of ocean environments such as K490 and chlorophyll data from 2002 to 2005. Mean chlorophyll from MODIS data increased by about 1-4% in the East sea after the typhoon. Mean concentration of MODIS chlorophyll in the post-typhoon period increased along the typhoon passage. However, Jeju coastal area has different patterns from those of the East sea.

  • 해양에서 연구목적으로 저주파 음원으로 사용하고 있는 폭발성 음원(SUS: Signals, Underwater Sound)의 신호특성을 파악하기 위해 1999년 9월에 동해의 대륙사면에서 1마일에서 80 마일까지 약 1에서 5마일의 정해진 간격으로 SUS를 투하하여 발생된 음향신호를 거리 및 수신수심별로 수신하였다. 주파수 필터를 사용하여 분석한 결과, 1 kHz이상의 고주파수 성분이 폭발시에 먼저 방출되며 저주파수 신호는 뒤이어 발생됨을 확인하였다. 이것은 폭약이 폭발시에 일어나는 메카니즘과 관련이 있는 것으로 사료된다. 거리의 증가에 따라 잔향의 영향을 받아 뒤이어 수신되는 파속(wave packet)들을 확인할 수 있었으며, 신호에 많은 영향을 주고 있었으나 잔향 분석은 여기서는 제외하였다. 본 연구는 실해역에서의 SUS신호에 관한 많은 자료를 분석한 것으로서 그 신호특성에 관한 이번 고찰은 해양음파전달시 사용하는 SUS 음향신호 해석에 많은 도움을 줄 것으로 기대한다.

  • West coast of Korea belongs to the five largest tidal-flat zones in the world. Aiming at the efficient management and preservation of the eco-system and the enhancement of the bio-productivity of the tidal-flat zones, development of a environment-friendly vehicle for tidal-flat area is being attempted. This paper deals with the description of the characteristics of the tidal-flat zones of west coast of Korea, the technology assessment of the related products in the ATV(All-Terrain Vehicle) market, the demand assessment for the resident people.
