  • The oceans are an untapped resource, capable of making a major contribution to our future energy needs. In the search for a non polluting renewable energy source, there is a push to find an economical way to harness energy from the ocean. Tidal stream is one of ocean energy form that is being investigated as potential source for power generation. Tidal current turbines are therefore designed as conversion machinery to generate power from tidal currents. A study on energy extraction from tidal currents is presented in this paper.

  • This paper deals with the design and aerodynamic analysis of a special-type impulse turbine, with an end plate for wave energy conversion. Numerical analysis was performed using a CFD code, FLUENT. The main idea of the proposed end plate was to minimize the adverse effect of tip clearance of turbine blade, and was borrowed from ducted propeller, with so-called penetrating end plate for special purpose marine vehicles. Results show that efficiency increases up to $5\%$, depending on the flow coefficient; a higher flow coefficient yields increased efficiency. Decrease of input coefficient CAwith an end plate is the main reason for higher efficiency. Performance of end plate at various design parameters, as well as flow conditions, was investigated; the advantages and disadvantages of the presentimpulse turbine were also discussed.

  • This paper deals with the performance analysis of the impulse turbine for a owe type wave energy conversion device. Numerical analysis was performed using the commercially-available software FLUENT. This parametric study includes variation of the setting angle of the guide vane. Since parametric study at various flow coefficients requires a tremendous amount of computing time, two-dimensional cascade flow approximation was employed to determine the optimum principal particulars in a rather simple manner. A Full three-dimensional calculation was also performed for several cases to confirm the validity of the two-dimensional approach. Results were compared to other experimental data, such as Setoguchi et al. (2001)'s extensive set of data, and found that the usefulness of 2-D analysis was well demonstrated. The advantages of each method were also evaluated.

  • A new energy conversion system which converts wind energy directly to heat instead of transforming it to electric power beforehand is suggested in this study. The new energy conversion system is composed of two big parts divided by their functions. One of them is a wind turbine part, and another is the heat energy conversion part. The object of this study is confined only to the heat energy conversion part, so the wind turbine is replaced with an electric motor for the convenience of experiment. In the experimental process, pressure difference at the hydraulic pump, revolution speed of the hydraulic pump, temperature at a few points on the oil circuit and the water circuit are measured at time intervals of five minutes. And integral values of input energy to the system and stored energy in the system is investigated.

  • Due to the constantly varying sea-state with which any wave energy conversion device must contend in order to extract energy efficiently , the ability to control the device's position relative to the incident waves is critical in achieving the creation of a truly functional and economical wave energy device. In this paper, the authors will propose methodology based on the theory of a variable structure system to utilize a three dimensional source distribution as a model to estimate anticipated surge, sway and yaw of a wave energy conversion device relative to varying angles and characteristics of incident waves and there from derive a feedback to a sliding mode controller which would reposition the device so as to maximize its ability to extract energy from waves in constantly varying ocean conditions.

  • This work is experimental study of 10 kW specialized Combined Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion. We propose a C-OTEC technology that directly uses exhaust thermal energy from power station condensers to heat the working fluid (R134a), and tests the feasibility of such power station by designing, manufacturing, installing, and operating a 10 kW-pilot facility. Power generation status was monitored by using exhaust thermal energy from an existing power plant located on the east coast of the Korean peninsula, heat exchange with 300 kW of heat capacity, and a turbine, which can exceed enthalpy efficiency of 45%. Output of 8.5 kW at efficiency of 3.5% was monitored when the condenser temperature and seawater temperature are $29^{\circ}C$ and $7.5^{\circ}C$, respectively. The evaluation of the impact of large-capacity C-OTEC technology on power station confirmed the increased value of the technology on existing power generating equipment by improving output value and reducing hot waste water. Through the research result, the technical possibility of C-OTEC has been confirmed, and it is being conducted at 200 kW-class to gain economic feasibility. Based on the results, authors present an empirical study result on the 200 kW C-OTEC design and review the impact on power plant.

  • This paper deals with the internal oscillating flaw in air chamber and duct of an OWC-type wave energy converter by numerical analysis using commercial CFD code, FLUENT. Whole oscillating flaw from OWC-type chamber to outlet through duct was solved by unsteady analysis in order that performance of wave energy conversion was made better. Results show that whole oscillating flaw field of this system in unsteady condition. Duct shape at setting place of turbine is curved with elbow, because profile of inlet condition to turbine is important in its efficiency. This paper is found internal flaw in air chamber and duct. Also, this research was found effect of duct shape.

  • In order to develop an efficient turbine for wave energy conversion suitable for actual ocean conditions, a new type of the air turbine with staggered blades has been investigated experimentally. Experiments have been carried out under steady flow conditions. Both the running and starting characteristics under sinusoidally oscillating flow conditions are simulated by a CFD method using a quasi-steady analysis. It is known that the air turbine with staggered blades gives a better performance compared with conventional Wells turbine, and a proper design factor of the air turbine is discussed for the setting angle of the rotor.
