  • This study examined the co-occurrence of child maltreatment and domestic violence in South Korea, using the administrative data from Korean Child Protection Services. Existing literature showed that the co-occurrence rate was high and that the co-occurrence was important in prevention and intervention for child maltreatment. However, few studies have investigated the co-occurrence of child maltreament and domestic violence in South Korea. None of the studies have examined the co-occurrence from the perspective of child protective services. This study analyzed the rate of co-occurrence among abusive families involved with Korean Child Protective Services and examined the relationship between domestic violence and child maltreatment. Results showed that 21.4% of the abusive families had also experienced domestic violence. Various characteristics(i.e., detailed abuse characteristics, psychosocial characteristics of perpetrators) differed between co-occurrence families and maltreatment-only families. Domestic violence was a significant predictor of child maltreatment, but the detailed relationships differed according subtypes of maltreatment. Based on the results, implications for theory and service integration between services for domestic violence victims and child protective services were discussed.

  • In this study, long-term variabilities of rainfall-occurrence characteristics are analyzed using rainfall data at Seoul, which is the longest data record existing in world. first, the accuracy of Chukwooki data set (CWK) are evaluated in view of rainfall-occurrence probability by analyzing the transition probabilities and occurrence characteristics based on Markov chain. And long-term inter-monthly variabilities of transition probabilities are analyzed using two dimensional LOWESS regression. From the results of analyzed transition probabilities and occurrence characteristics, it is different that rainfall-occurrence characteristics between CWK and modern rain gage data set (MRG) for original rainfall data sets (M00). For characteristics of rainfall series, occurrences probabilities of rainfall are increased and durations of each rainfall are shorter than past. And from the results of analyzing the long-term inter-monthly variabilities of transition probabilities, in case of M20, lengths of dry spells between CWK and MRG are not different significantly and lengths of wet spells are decreased persistently after A.D. 1830. Especially, decreasing trend for lengths of wet spells at recent september are appeared significantly. These results are considered with increasing trend of recent rainfall, it is concluded that recent frequencies and intensities of rainfall are increasing.

  • Objective:This study is on the characteristics of motorcycle accidents occurring in the mail delivery process by skill level. Background: The tendency of delivery postmen's driving in a hurry may become the cause of accidents since there is a constraint that delivery should be completed within a limited time. Method: This study analyzed the traffic accident data of 259 delivery postmen, who had been approved as occupation-related industrial accident victims from 2009 to 2012, by their work experience in view of season, day of the week of an accident occurrence, accident occurrence time, accident cause, collision type, and driving situation. Results: Accident characteristics of delivery postmen show that the ratio of accidents occurring to those who had less than 10 years of work experience was high. There were many motorcycle collisions in winter and summer by season and an unexpected object, along with road condition, took up 70.7% of the accident sources. There were no differences in accident occurrence time, the day of the week, season, accident source, and collision type between the group of delivery postmen with less than 10 years of work experience and those with 10 years or more of work experience. However, there was a difference in distribution of driving condition. Conclusion and Applications: The results of this study can be used to present the policies or guidelines for the accident prevention of delivery postmen since the results show the characteristics of the injured and accident occurrence characteristics in relation with the delivery postmen's motorcycle collisions.

  • This study is an effort to develop a stochastic model of precipitation series that preserves the pattern of occurrence of precipitation events throughout the year as well as several characteristics of the duration, amount, and intensity of precipitation events. In this study an event cluster model is used to describe the occurrence of precipitation events. A logarithmic negative mixture distribution is used to describe event duration and separation. The number of events within each cluster is also described by the Poisson cluster process. The duration of each event within a cluster and the separation of events within a single cluster are described by a logarithmic negative mixture distribution. The stochastic model for hourly precipitation occurrence process is fitted to historical precipitation data by estimating the model parameters. To allow for seasonal variations in the precipitation process, the model parameters are estimated separately for each month. an analysis of thirty-four years of historical and simulated hourly precipitation data for Seoul indicates that the stochastic model preserves many features of historical precipitation. The seasonal variations in number of precipitation events in each month for the historical and simulated data are also approximately identical. The marginal distributions for event characteristics for the historical and simulated data were similar. The conditional distributions for event characteristics for the historical and simulated data showed in general good agreement with each other.

  • To investigate the occurrence characteristics and types of fog on the Korean Peninsula over the past three years (2020 to 2022), data from 96 synoptic meteorological observatories and 21 ocean buoys were collected and analyzed. We included precipitation fog, which occurs after precipitation events, and cloud-base lowering fog, which is caused by the development of lower-level clouds, with a total six subtypes of fog. In the case of cloud-base lowering fog, the occurrence frequency at 2.6% was not high at 2.6%, but the duration of low visibility below 200 m was very long at 6.9 hours. The seasonal frequency of fog is low in spring and winter, high in summer over islands and coastal areas, and high in autumn over inland areas. The frequency of inland fog, which is characterized by high radiation fog and dense fog, requires attention in terms of transportation safety, with an occurrence time of 0500 LST to 1000 LST. Therefore, systematic analysis of precipitation fog and cloud-base lowering, as well as radiation and advection fog, is required in the analysis of recognizing fog as a disaster and causing transportation disorders.

  • When typhoon occurs, the meteorological conditions get worse and can cause a large damage from storm and flood . This damage, however, can be minimized if a precise analysis of the runoff characteristics by typhoon tracks is used in the flood contorl This paper aims at the analysis of storm occurrence and runoff characteristics by typhoon tracks in Nakdong river basin. Therefore, the data of 14 typhoons which invaded Nakdong river basin during the period from 1975 to 1991 were collected, analyzed, and studied. The major results of this study are as followings; 1) The frequency of the typhoon occurrence here in Korea was affected by the storms three times a year on the average. The highest-recorded frequency was during the months of July to September. 2) The survey of the track characteristics depending on the forms of the storm in the Nakdong river basin showed that typhoon storm advanced from the south of the basin to the north, while the frontal type storm was most likely to advanced from the west to the north. 3) Typhoon tracks are classified into three categories, 6 predictors with high correlation coefficient are finally selected, and stepwise multiple regression method are used to establish typhoon strom forecasting models. 4) The riview on the directions of progress of the storm made it clear that the storm moving downstream from upstream of the basin could develop into peak discharge for ca short time and lead to more flood damage than in any other direction.

  • Objectives: This study is aimed at offering basic data for making plans for offensive odor management after researching offensive odor occurrence and characteristics in Gangwon Province. Methods: The data used in the study is based on offensive odor data analyzed by the Gangwon Institute of Health and Environment from 2012 to 2019. The data were reclassified by year, month, facility, and region to identify characteristics of occurrence. Finally, a distribution map of offensive odors was created using ArcGIS. Results: The highest monthly frequency of offensive odor occurrence falls in June, August, and July, and the summer season and third quarter are the highest. According to the latest eight-year data for Gangwon Province, complaints about offensive odors in county areas are more frequent than those in city areas. There are many offensive odor complaints in Wonju, Cheorwon, and Heongsung. The main offensive odor emission facilities are livestock and waste treatment (recycling) facilities. Complaints about offensive odors are relatively lower the Yeongdong area than Yeongseo area, which is considered to be the result of characteristics of land-sea breezes and geographical factors. Offensive odors from livestock facilities count for an average of 53.9% of the total, and the inadequacy rate of livestock facilities averages 36.9%. Conclusions: To maintain a clean environment in Gangwon Province, it is strongly recommended that an offensive odor reduction plan for livestock facilities be established. Areas with a high density of offensive odor occurrence should be identified and systematically managed with short- and mid-term measures. If offensive odors is managed using GIS, it is possible to identify the characteristics of occurrence by time and space and also by facility. In addition, since systematic data management is possible, it is believed that a rapid response to offensive odors, prediction of their spread, and efficient management are possible.

  • The clear-water phase (CWP) is a notable limnological phenomenon in freshwater systems caused by predatory interactions between large filter-feeding zooplankton and phytoplankton. However, the mechanisms and factors that influence the extent of CWP, particularly in complex water systems with both fluvial and lacustrine characteristics, remain poorly understood. The present study evaluated CWP occurrence patterns at different sites in a large reservoir located in a temperate monsoon region (Lake Paldang, Korea); the relationships among factors associated with CWP occurrence, such as transparency, zooplankton diversity, and chlorophyll a concentration were investigated. Transparency exhibited significant correlations with precipitation and retention time, as well as the relative abundance of zooplankton (p<0.01), suggesting that a change in the retention time due to precipitation can alter CWP. Data collected before and after CWP occurrence were analyzed using paired t-test to determine variations in CWP occurrence based on the water system characteristics. The results demonstrated that various factors were associated with CWP occurrence in the fluvial-type and lacustrine-type sites. The correlation between zooplankton biomass and transparency was stronger in the lacustrine-type sites than in the fluvial-type sites. The lacustrine-type sites, where cladoceran emergence is common and is associated with long retention times, favored CWP occurrence. The results suggest that lacustrine-type sites, which are conducive to zooplankton development and have relatively long retention times, enhance CWP occurrence. Furthermore, CWP occurrence was notable in spring, and the present study revealed that site-specific CWP could occur throughout the year, regardless of the season.
