To study the mechanical behaviors of the margins of porcelain-fused-to-metal crown on the posterior teeth, 5 types of margins on the lower first molar were chosen, and then the finite element models were constructed. 50kg forces were applied to the porcelain on the axial wall supported by the metal vertically. The displacements and stresses of the porcelain-fused-to-metal crown were analyzed to investigate the influence of the type of margins. The results were as follows; 1. High tensile stresses were exhibited on the porcelain of the portion of the coronal line angle insufficient metallic support. 2. In case metal coping had a good supporting form to vertical force, uniform compressive stresses were exhibited on their supporting form. 3. Tensile stresses in the inframetallic margin on the series of the shoulder with a bevel margins were decreased in the bevel portion. 4. Principal stresses on the metal of the chamfer marginal portion were decreased comparing with the series of the shoulder margins. 5. The noticeable compressive stress gradients were exhibited between axial cement layer and metal on the series of the shoulder margins. 6. The principal stresses on the marginal cement layer were higher than that of the occlusal surface and axial wall.
The aim of this study was to compare the marginal leakage of class II light curing composite resin restoration according to filling methods. With using acid etching technique and dentin bonding agent, various methods were suggested to eliminate or reduce the marginal leakage. In this study, class II cavities were prepared in 100 extracted human premolars with cementum margin(1mm below the CEJ) and the teeth were randomly assigned to 5 groups of 20 teeth each. The teeth in group 1, 2, 3 and 4 were restored by direct filling methods using P-50 and Clearfil Photoposterior of 10 teeth each, but the method of insertion of the restorative materials varied with each group. And the teeth in group 5 were restored by inlay method using Kulzer Inlay and CR Inlay. Filling methods are as follows : Group 1 : The composite resin was inserted in one layer in the proximal box and one layer in the occlusal portion. Group 2 : Insertion was in two equally thick horizontal layers in the proximal box. Group 3 : Insertion was in two diagonally placed layers in the proximal box. Group 4 : The composite resin was inserted in the same way as in group 3 except that a glass ionomer liner was first placed on the axial wall and gingival floor. Group 5 : The teeth were restored by Inlay technique using dure cure resin cement. All the teeth were thermocycled, stained with 1 % methylene blue solution, sectioned mesiodistally, and scored for marginal leakage. To compare the marginal leakage, ANOVA and T-test were used in analysis. The following results were obtained : 1. In direct filling methods, there was no significant difference in marginal leakage at both occlusal and cervical margins. 2. In all groups, occlusal margin showed significantly less leakage than cervical margin. 3. In group using glass ionomer liner, there was no significant reduction of marginal leakage at the cervical margin. 4. The group restored by inlay method showed significantly less marginal leakage than groups restored by direct filling methods at both occlusal and gingival margins. 5. There was no significant difference in each group according to filling materials.
The purpose of the study was to evaluate the marginal sealing effect of composite resin inlays according to the luting techniques and compare them to the conventional direct resin filling technique. 90 cavities of class V were prepared on the buccal surface of 90 extracted molar teeth, which were divided into four groups. Cavities of control group were directly filled with Scotchbond 2 and P - 50, and those of composite resin inlay groups were luted with one of the followings: Adhesive bond followed by Adhesive cement, All bond followed by Adhesive cement, Fuji - ionomer type L All the specimens were immersed in India ink dye solution for 7 days at $37^{\circ}C$ incubator after thermocycling between $5^{\circ}C$ and $60^{\circ}C$ and longitudinally sectioned with diamond disk inot two parts All the specimens were observed at the occlusal and gingival margins and statistical analysis was performed. The results were as follows: 1. Groups filled with composite resin inlay showed less marginal leakage than the group directly filled(p<0.01). 2. There was no significant difference in marginal leakage between composite resin inlay groups luted with Adhesive bond followed by Adhesive cement and the group luted with All bond followed by Adhesive cement(p>0.05). 3. At occlusal margins, Composite resin inlay group luted with Adhesive bond followed by Adhesive cement showed less marginal leakage than the group luted with Fuii ionomer type I(p<0.01). At gingival margins, composite resin inlay group luted with All bond followed by Adhesive cement showed less marignal leakage than the group luted with Fuji ionomer type I(P<0.01).
Statement of problem: Microleakage at the occlusal and gingival margin of Class V cavities restored with composite resin has traditionally been considered an obstacle to successful restoration. Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of three different surface sealants(Fortify, Permaseal and Biscover LV) on the marginal sealing of Class V light-activated composite resin restorations(Z250). Material and methods: Forty noncarious human premolars and molars extracted within a three-month period were selected. Class V cavities with the occlusal margin in enamel and gingival margin in cementum were prepared in both buccal and lingual surfaces. The teeth, randomly assigned in four groups with twenty cavities in each group, were restored with composite resin after applying an adhesive system(Clearfil SE bond). After the finishing and polishing procedures, the restorations were covered with a specific surface sealants, except for the control samples, which were not sealed. After placing restorations, the specimens were thermocycled, and immersed in a 2% methylene blue solution for twenty four hours and sectioned longitudinally. The marginal microleakage was evaluated at the occlusal and gingival interfaces using a microscope and compared among the four groups using ANOVA test and Wilcoxon Rank-Sum test($\alpha$=0.05). Results: Statistical analysis showed that there was significantly less leakage when the surface sealants were used than there was in control group(P<.05). There were no significant differences of microleakage at occlusal and gingival margins among groups. There were no significant differences between microleakage of occlusal and gingival margins in each group. Fortify was not statistically different from control group at the gingival margin(P>.05). Conclusion: Application of surface sealants was an effective method of surface coating in reducing microleakage at occlusal and gingival margins of Class V composite resin restorations. However, it is certain that some microleakage still occurred despite the application of surface sealants, especially gingival margins.
This study evaluated the marginal microleakage of five single step adhesives. Class V cavity preparations with occlusal margins in enamel and gingival margins in dentin were prepared on both buccal and lingual surfaces of extracted human molar teeth. Prepared teeth were randomly divided into five groups and restored using one of the single step adhesives and composite resins:Prompt L-Pop/Filtek Z-250 (Group 1), AQ Bond/Metafil CX (Group 2), One-Up Bond F/Palfique Toughwell (Group 3). Futurabond/Admira (Group 4), Xeno III/Spectrum TPH (Group 5). The restored teeth were thermocycled. Microleakage was assessed by dye penetration using 2% methylene blue dye solution. The teeth were bisected buccolingually and evaluated for microleakage under steromicroscope. The data were statistically analysed by Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney tests. The results of this study were as follows:1. Microleakage of enamel margins in group 3 was statistically higher than that in groups 1, 2, 4, 5 (p < 0.05). 2. Microleakage of dentin margins in group 1 was statistically higher than that in groups 2, 5, and that in group 3 was statistically higher than that in groups 2, 4, 5 (p < 0.05). 3. Dentin marginal microleakage was higher than enamel marginal microleakage in all experimental groups. In conclusion, Prompt L-Pop showed the least leakage at enamel margin, and AQ Bond showed at dentin margin in this study. Marginal miroleakage in dentin was higher than that in enamel.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the adaptation of light cured glass ionomer cement and composite resin using all- etch technique to tooth structure. In this study, class V cavities were prepared on the buccal surfaces of 10 extracted human premolar teeth with cementum margin and teeth were randomly assigned 2 groups of 5 teeth each. The cavities of glass ionomer cement group were filled with the light cured glass ionomer cement(Fuji II LC) and the cavities of composite resin group were filled with the light cured composite resion(P - 50) using all- etch technique with All- Bond 2. The restored teeth were stored in 100 % relative humidity at $37^{\circ}C$ for 48 hours. And then, the roots of the teeth were removed with the tapered fissure bur and the remaining crowns were sectioned occlusogingivally through the center of restorations. Adaptation at tooth - restoration interface were assessed occlusally, gingivally, and axially by scanning electron microscope. The results were as follows : 1. The adaptation to enamel walls of composite resin restorations using All - Bond 2 showed better than glass ionomer restorations. 2. The adaptation to gingival and axial walls of glass ionomer restorations showed better than composite resin restorations using All - Bond 2. 3. In both groups, occlusal margins of restorations showed better adaptation than gingival margins of restorations.
Despite the improvements in bond strengths of dentin adhesives and resin-modified glass ionomers, the marginal seal of cervical restorations remains a concern. Microleakage at poorly sealed margins can result in staining, post-operative sensitivity, pulpal irritation, and recurrent caries. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of surface penetrating sealant(SPS) on the microleakage of cervical restorations. 45 extracted human teeth were selected, and Class V preparations were prepared on the both buccal and lingual surface of the teeth to the following dimensions : 1.5mm axially, 3mm mesiodistally, and 3mm incisogingivally. After cervical restoration with composite resin, compomer, glass ionomer each restoration was treated as three methods: No Tx., Scotchbond Multipurpose Adhesive$^{\circledR}$, Fortify$^{\circledR}$. The sections were examined with a stereomicroscope to determine the extent of microleakage at enamel and dentin margins. The results of this study were as follows. 1. All groups showed some microleakage. 2. Gingival cavity wall with cementum margin showed significantly higher leakage value than occlusal cavity wall with enamel margin. 3. The group treated with SPS showed significantly lower leakage value than no treated group(p<0.05). But there is no difference between Fortify$^{\circledR}$ and Scotchbond Multipurpose adhesive$^{\circledR}$. The results of this study suggest that SPS are effective in reducing microleakage of class V restorations. But it is certain that some microleakage still occurred despite the application of SPS.

This in vitro study was performed to assess the effect of surface sealing on the microleakage of class V composite resin restorations that underwent several aging treatments. Class V cavities were prepared on the buccal surface of 100 sound extracted premolars and restored with a hybrid light-cured composite resin according to the manufacturer's instructions. They were randomly divided into two groups consisting of 50 samples: group I, without surface sealing, and group II, in which margins were etched and surface sealant was applied. After thermocycling, each group was divided into five subgroups, respectively, to represent the five aging treatments: group A = no further treatment (only thermocycling), B = toothbrushing, C = load cycling, D = toothbrushing followed by load cycling, and E = aging treatment in deionized water for six months. Microleakage was assessed by examining the penetration of 2% methylene blue dye. The following results were obtained: 1. At occlusal and cervical margins in groups without surface sealing, there was no significant difference in microleakage after the several aging treatments (p>0.05). 2. The occlusal margins of groups with surface sealing showed no significant differences after the several aging treatments (p>0.05). 3. In the cervical margins of groups with surface sealing, microleakage significantly increased after load cycling or aging in deionized water for six months (p<0.05). 4. The no-further-treatment group and the toothbrushing group with surface sealing showed less microleakage than the corresponding groups without surface sealing (p<0.05). 5. The surface-sealed groups with load cycling or aging in deionized water showed no significant difference in microleakage to the corresponding groups without surface sealing (p>0.05). In conclusion, the results of this study suggest that the surface sealant infiltrating through the gap of the cervical margin exerted a positive effect on microleakage at the initial stage, but the effect was not sufficient to overcome the stress generated by the cuspal flexure during occlusal loading and water absorption.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the micro leakage of composite resin when various phosphoric acid agents were used to etch the enamel and dentin. In this study, class V cavities were prepared on the buccal surfaces of fourty extracted human molar teeth, and they were randomly assigned into 4 groups with 10 teeth. The cavities of each groups were etched with 10%, 32%, 35% and 37% phosphoric acids for 15 seconds, washed and dried and the cavities were restored with composite resin after application of the adhesive. The specimens were immersed in 2% methylene blue solution for 3 days. And then, the specimens were sectioned buccoligually. Degree of dye penetration at tooth-restoration interfaces was examined by Inverted Metallurgical Microscope at the occlusal and gingival margins. The result were as follows : 1. The degree of microleakage at occlusal and gingival margin in all group was statistically difference among 10% and 35% (P<0.01), 10% and 37% (P<0.01), 32% and 35% (P<0.05) and 32% and 37% (P<0.05) acid concentrations, but was not statistically difference between 10% and 32%, 35% and 37% acid concentrations (P>0.05). The degree of microleakage was showed to dimish with increase of acid concentration. 2. The degree of microleakage at the occlusal margin was statistically significant difference among 10% and 32%,10% and 35%, 10% and 37% acid concentrations(P<0.05). The degree of microleakage among 32% and 35%, 32% and 37% and 32% and 37% acid concentrations was not statistically significant difference. 3. In comparison of microleakage at the gingival margin, the degree of microleakage above 32% acid concentration was not showed less than 10% acid concentration (P>0.05). In comparison of 32%, 35%, 37% acid concentrations, the degree of microleakage at 35% and 37% acid concentrations was showed less than 32% acid concentration(P<0.05).
This study evaluated the microleakage performance of four self-etcing primer adhesives(Clearfil SE Bond, Clearfil Liner Bond 2, UniFil Bond, and FL Bond) and one self-etching adhesive(Prompt L-Pop). Class V cavity preparations with occlusal margins in enamel and gingival margins in dentin were prepared on both buccal and lingual surfaces of 50 extracted human molar teeth. Prepared teeth were randomly divided into five groups and restored using one of five adhesives and composite resins: Prompt L-Pop/Filtek Z 250(Group 1), Clearfil SE Bond/Clearfil AP-X(Group 2), Clearfil Liner Bond 2/Clearfil AP-X(Group 3), UniFil Bond/UniFil F(Group 4), and FL Bond/Filtek Z 250(Group 5). Following one day storage in room temperature water, the restored teeth were thermocycled for 500 cycles between 5$^{\circ}C$ and 55$^{\circ}C$. Marginal microleakage was assessed by dye penetration using 2% methylene blue dye. After 24 hours, the teeth were sectioned longitudinally and evaluated for microleakage under steromicroscope The data were statistically analysed by Kruskal-Wallis Test, Mann-Whitney and Wilcoxon signed ranked tests. The results of this study were as follows ; 1. The microleakges at both enamel and dentinal mal$.$gins were the lowest in group 4. increasing among groups in the following order: group 2, follwed by group 5, follwed by group 1, and the highest in group 3. 2. At the enamel margins, the microleakage of group 3 was significantly higher than those of groups 2. 4 and 5(p<0.05), and also the microleakage of group 1 was statistically higher than those of groups 2 and 5(p<0.05). 3. At the dentinal margins, microleakage of group 3 was signincantly higher than microleakages of groups 1, 2, 4 and 5(p<0.05). 4. Compared with microleakages between the enamel and dentinal margins of each group, groups 1, 4 and 5 at enamel margin and group 2 and group 3 at dentinal margin were higher microleakage. But there was no significant difference between enamel and dentinal microleakages of each group(p>0.05).
