  • On the basis of sensor types, satellites can be classified by two types, which are optical observation satellite and radar observation satellite. A satellite type is selected according to the specific mission. Optical observation satellite is more appropriate for getting high geometric resolution images and radar observation satellite is more appropriate for getting images independent of weather condition the more a demand of satellite increases, the more an importance of information increases. Therefore, development trend and state of earth observation satellite are surveyed and described in this paper. In the future, domestic development of satellites will be planned considering trend of satellite technologies.

  • This paper is a study on an optical bench satisfying stiffness and thermal pointing error requirements for LEO earth observation satellite. According to shape and stiffness requirements, optical bench type 1 is designed. Because type 1 does not satisfy the thermal pointing error requirement, an optical bench type 2 is suggested. Although the type 2 has better results than type 1, it still does not meet the thermal pointing error requirement. Using the results of optical bench type 1&2, the optical bench type 3 is finally designed, which satisfies both the stiffness and thermal pointing error requirements.

  • As a preparatory study for Global Positioning System-Very Long Baseline Interferometry (GPS-VLBI) hybrid system, we examined if VLBI type observation of the GPS signal is realizable through a test experiment. The test experiment was performed between Kashima and Koganei, Japan, with 110 km baseline. The GPS L1 and L2 signals were received by commercial GPS antennas, down-converted to video-band signals by specially developed GPS down converters, and then sampled by VLBI samplers. The sampled GPS data were recorded as ordinary VLBI data by VLBI recorders. The sampling frequency was 64 MHz and the observation time was 1 minute. The recorded data were correlated by a VLBI correlator. From correlation results, we simultaneously obtained correlation fringes from all 8 satellites above a cut-off elevation which was set to 15 degree. 87.5% of L1 fringes and 12.5% of L2 fringes acquired the Signal to Noise Ratios which are sufficient to achieve the group delay precision of 0.1nsec that is typical in current geodetic VLBI. This result shows that VLBI type observation of GPS satellites will be readily realized in future GPS-VLBI hybrid system.

  • This study is to set up the appropriate range of observation time through contemplating the characteristics of observation time run for the information acquisition of space. The conclusions reached through this study are as the followings. First, this study could find out that even though the evaluation elements on the three types for image evaluation were the same, the information acquisitions were different as those types varied. On the other hand, the change of the average run-time by type for the information acquisition was found not to be big, in other words, even though the run-time was alike, the information acquisitions varied depending on the type. Second, he evaluation by language media showed the average value by element had the order of [shape>position>number>existence] and the range of their run-time was 94.6~102.9 seconds. The average rate of information acquisition shown at the visual media had the order of [composition>shape>material&color] and the range of run-time was 93.1~99.7 seconds. Third, the evaluation by language media showed that for male subjects the range of information acquisition rate was 39.1~91.4% and that of run-time 85.1~106.0 seconds and for female ones 46.0~94.6% and 96.3~112.3 seconds respectively. In case of the visual media, male subjects showed the range of information acquisition rate was 40.3-66.7% and the range of run-time 82.4~97.9 seconds and the female ones, 42.2~71.0% and 94.0~115.1 seconds respectively, through which we could see that at the evaluation by language media and visual media both the female's range of information acquisition and that of observation time were higher than the male's.

  • Purpose: This study examined the effects of the type of video contents used for action observations on the ability to control posture. Methods: The participants were 48 healthy adults. The two hands of the participants were crossed on both shoulders, and the other foot was placed in a straight line in front of the target to allow them to watch a video of the monitor. The videos were presented in random order with three video contents (natural, stable balance posture, and unstable balance posture) consisting of 30 seconds each. A 15-second resting time was given between each video. During action observation using various video content forms, the posture control ability was measured using a TekScan MetScan® system. Results: The results revealed statistically significant differences in the area of movement and the distance by COP and distance by the type of action-observation videos, and the distance by the anteroposterior and mediolateral sides (p<0.05). The stable balance posture and unstable balance posture video showed significant differences in the distance by the COP, anteroposterior, and mediolateral distance. (p<0.05) Conclusion: This study suggests that choosing the contents of the videos is important during action-observation training, and action-observation training can help improve postural control.

  • We propose a marine observation system using existing light buoys to observe various marine information of marine locations. Our proposed ocean observation system is composed of the existing standard light buoy type and can be easily connected to the light buoy. The proposed marine observation system measures the mean wave height, maximum wave height, mean wave height and water temperature measured in the ocean. Besides, it can measure the air pressure, temperature, wind speed and wind speed in real time. In order to measure important peaks in marine observations, 2200 peak data are collected for 10 minutes, and the collected data are subjected to spectral analysis to extract significant wave and wave period data. The developed system removes the noise by using the filter because the marine observation system attaches to the light buoy. We compare and analyze the measurement data of the existing proven floating marine observation system and the standard equivalent system developed. Also, it is proved that the data of the standard type backbone ocean observation system developed through the comparative experiment is similar to that of the existing ocean observation system.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify how primary students make decision in an anomalous situation of discrepancy between the observation result and their prior knowledge and what is the relationship between their decision and views on science. In this study, the researchers have observed a science class of fifth graders for two months and collected qualitative data such as field note, audio transcript, video-recording, photo and interviews. It is shown that participants experienced three types of subjective observation as listed: expectation-related, theory-dependent and dilemmatic observation. The questionnaire of the students to the views on science reveals that most of them thought highly of empiricism and utility of science. With this result, it is found that they took into account the limitation and provision of experiments while making judgment in an anomalous situation. That is to say, their assessment of experiments and observation is crucial in judgment in the situation that their observation is incompatible with their prior knowledge. The researchers conclude that their views on science may influence their observation and suggest the ways to promote students' ability linked to observation.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop the analysis frame of reporting observation results by high school students in biology experiments using microscopes and analyze their error types. For this study, five experiments were carried out by 12 high school students in B metropolitan city. Before these experiments, developed the analysis frame of reporting observation results. Tests for checking prior knowledge of students were done and results of each experiment were taken picture of. Using the developed framework, the real results and reported results submitted by students were analyzed. The result of this study shows how students report their observation results and they tend to have difficulty in doing observation activity itself. The ratio of factual reports is low because observation ways and recording ways have not been taught properly. Observation training is needed for observing real results objectively. The improvement in experiment environment is necessary for right observation, not observation for checking based on only results. In addition, the education of ethics in science research focusing on the integrity should be performed. The analysis data of reporting observation result by students can be used as basic data for teachers to plan observation strategies and to have right observation views and ways.

  • In a longitudinal study, subjects can experience same type of events repeatedly. Also, there may exist intermittent dropouts resulting in repeated observation gaps during which no recurrent events are observed. Furthermore, when such observation gaps have incomplete forms caused by the unknown termination times of observation gaps, ordinary approaches result in biased estimates. In this study, we investigate the effect of ignoring observation gaps and propose methods to overcome this problem. For estimating the distribution of unknown termination times, an interval-censored mechanism is applied and two cases are considered. Simulation studies are carried out to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. Conviction data of young drivers with several suspensions are analyzed to illustrate the suggested approach.

  • It is desirable to utilize the result after studying the rainfall characteristics including the latest observation data in the districts for the sake of establishment of the more accurate plans for drainage or plans for hydraulic stuctures because the rainfall phenomena are different in their characteristics by regional groups and if we make a meteorological observation for a long period of time, the rainfall characteristics also change a great deal as compared with the preceding years. Therefore, we selected only the annual maximum rainfall from the self-recording rain gauge of the main rainfall observation station (Cheju, Sogwipo, Songsanpo) in the Cheju districts in the last twenty years, extracted the rainfall by actual measurement by the rainfall duration, and induced the optimal probable rainfall-intensity formulas by regional groups in the Cheju districts, taking advantage of the rainfall formulas being in wide use in general, that is, Talbot type, Sherman type, Japanese type, and new Semi-log type. As the result, the return periods at Cheju station appeared to be three years to five years and the optimal probable rainfall-intensity formula at Cheju station, Japanese type and outside the city, Talbot type; Sogwipo, Sherman type; Songsanpo, Talbot type respectively.
