Association of GNB3 Polymorphism with Obesity Index, Blood Pressure, Glucose and Lipid Level (비만한 한국인에서 GNB3 유전자다형성과 비만 지표, 혈압, 혈당, 지질 대사의 관계)

  • Objectives: The aim of this study is to establish the association of GNB3 with obesity-index, blood pressure, glucose and lipid level. Methods: A total of 209 Korean obese subjects participated in the study. Body weight, body mass index(BMI), waist circumference, body fat, body fat mass, resting metabolic rate, blood pressure, total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein, triglyceride and fasting blood sugar test were measured by using standardized protocols. The GNB3 was genotyped by using polymerase chain reaction with restriction fragment length polymorphism. Results: The frequency of CC, CT, TT genotype were, respectively, 18,2%, 56.9%, 24,9%, and the frequency of T allele was 53.3% in Korean obese population. There were no association of GNB3 with obesity index, blood pressure, glucose and lipid level in Korean obese population. Conclusions: Obese Korea population have a higher frequency of T alle than general Korean population. There are no association of GNB3 with obesity index, blood pressure, glucose and lipid level in Korean obese population.

The Differences of Biochemical Status and Dietary Habits according to the Obesity Degree among Obese Elementary School Students in the Gyungbuk Area (경북지역 일부 초등학생의 비만도에 따른 생화학 검사치와 식습관)

  • The prevalence of obesity in children has steadily risen during recent years in developed countries. Child obesity has become a major concern to health providers since it has grown to epidemic proportions over the past few decades. This study was conducted to investigate the biochemical status, dietary habits and life styles according to the obesity degree among obese children residing in the Gyungbuk area. The subjects were 148 elementary school students (boy 103, girl 45) and classified as mildly obese (n = 56), moderately obese (n = 61) and severely obese (n = 31) by the obesity index. The average body weight and height increased significantly according to the obesity degree (p < 0.05, p < 0.001). Serum cholesterol concentration came under the normal level in all groups. Serum AST activity increased according to the obesity degree but it was not significant. Serum ALT activity increased according to the obesity degree (p < 0.05). Dietary habit score was lower significantly according to the obesity degree (p < 0.01). Life style of the subjects was significantly different for the level of 'healthy state (p < 0.05)', 'body perception (p < 0.01)', 'watching TV and video (p < 0.05)', 'normal sleeping hour (p < 0.05)' and 'degree of stress (p < 0.05)' according to the obesity degree. A positive relationship between obesity index and blood pressure, ALT has been shown in the subjects. Obesity index and dietary habit scores were negatively associated. Therefore, these results suggest that a practical nutrition-exercise education program for the prevention of child obesity should be provided to elementary school children. A Study on Relations between the Index of Obesity by Body Composition Analysis and Results of other Oriental Health Examinations on Some Women (일부 여성의 한방검진에서 체성분 검사를 통한 비만지표와 그 외 한방 검진 결과와의 상관관계 연구)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to find out the relations between the index of obesity by body composition analysis (EMI. %BF and WHR) and results of other oriental health examinations (QSCC II, HRV and APG) on some women. Methods: 114 women who were tested by oriental health examination between May 2006 and August 2008 were studied. Results: As a result of the study on the relations between the index of obesity by body composition analysis and sasang constitution, it was found that each of them had significant differences among themselves and Taeumin had the highest significance than other sasang constitution. As a result of the study on the relations between the index of obesity by body composition analysis and HRV, it was discovered that there was no significant relationship between BMI and WHR and HRV. However, %BF had negative correlations with autonomic activity, stress resistance and stress index. As a result of the study on the relations between the index of obesity by body composition analysis and APG, it was found that they had positive correlations with each other. Conclusion: In conclusion, there are significant relations between the index of obesity by body composition analysis and results of other oriental health examinations.

Effect of Ganjeonggyeok Acupuncture and Saengkankunbi-tang Treatment in the Changes of LFT and Lipid-obesity Index Values (간정격 시술 및 생간건비탕 투여가 간기능 및 비만도 변화에 미치는 영향)

  • Objectives : This study was aimed to figure out how effectively acupuncture treatment and herb-medicine work on patients with elevation of LFT value and lipid-obesity index. Methods : The subject were 23 patients visited to Dept. of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Kwangdong Oriental Medicine Hospital, who complained chronic fatigue and wandering pain from Oct. 2007. to Oct. 2008. Before treatments, they were tested for LFT, total cholesterol, triglyceride, body fat ratio and obesity index. They were treated with Ganjeonggyeok acupuncture weekly for 1 month. During acupuncture treatments, we applied Sangkankunbi-tang to all patients twice a day. After 1 month, they were retested for LFT, total cholesterol, triglyceride, body fat ratio and obesity index. Results : 1. After treatments, we could get the result of dropping means of AST, ALT and $\gamma$-GTP value. Statistical significance of ALT and $\gamma$-GTP were recognized before and after treatments, but AST was not recognized. 2. After treatments, we also could get the result of dropping means of total cholesterol, triglyceride, body fat ratio and obesity index. Statistical significance of all values were recognized before and after treatments. 3. Among 23 patients, 10 cases were reported that they were not within normal limits at least one in AST, ALT and $\gamma$-GTP. After treatments of those patients, we could get the result of dropping means of AST, ALT and $\gamma$-GTP value. Statistical significance of all values were recognized before and after treatments. 4. Among 23 patients, 19 cases were reported that they were not within normal limits at least one in total cholesterol, triglyceride, body fat ratio and obesity index. After treatments of those patients, we could get the result of dropping means of total cholesterol, triglyceride, body fat ratio and obesity index. Statistical significance of all values were recognized before and after treatments. Conclusions : Though further study is necessary, our finding suggest that the conduction of Ganjeonggyeok acupuncture and Sangkankunbi-tang treatments have helped to decrease the figures of LFT and lipid-obesity index in patients.

Effect of Nutrition Education Program in Obese Children and Their Parents(I) - Focus on Anthropometric Values and Serum Biochemical Index - (비만아동과 그 부모에 대한 영양교육 효과의 평가(I)-신체 계측치와 혈액 생화학치를 중심으로-)

  • The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of nutrition education program on anthropometric values and boichemical index in obese children who live in Gumi city. The subjects were 16 obese boys, 20 obese girls with obesity index over 130 and 36 of their parents. The nutrition education was carried out by the professional personnel such as doctors, professors, and dietitians. The children were provided with well-balanced lunch meals and had 40min-lectures on the reasonable weight management, 40 min-games and also had regular exercises (stretching, swimming) for 90 mins everyday during 2weeks of the program. The parents had 90 min-lectures on childhood obesity, diet therapy, behavior modification, and exercise for 6times. After the program, obesity index, BMI, % body fat were significantly decreased (p < 0.05) in boys and obese index, BMI, % body fat and WHR were significantly decreased (p < 0.05) in girls. Blood cholesterol and TG levels of girls were significantly decreased (p < 0.05). These findings show that the well-designed nutrition education program for obese children can be an effective approach to help them to improve their anthropometric values and biochemical index.

  • Nowadays obesity has been become a serious social issue. Many researches are trying to find the root cause of obesity. Obesity causes various kinds of disease and safety accidents in work places. Thus, the main objective of this study is to analyze obesity index of citizens in Seoul which is a metropolis of Korea and a densely populated district. In order to analyze a detailed somatotype of citizens, age groups are divided into 30-34 years, 35-39 years, 40-49 years, and 50-59 years according to gender respectively. The result of this study can be applied to the comfortable and appropriate design for workers.

Coexistence of Age-related Loss of Skeletal Muscle Mass and Obesity in Korean Men in Their Thirties: Understanding Incidence Rate and Key Influencing Elements

  • PURPOSE: The coexistence of age-related skeletal muscle mass loss and obesity poses a substantial health risk for individuals because it combines the detrimental effects of muscle mass reduction associated with aging and the health complications from obesity. This study aimed to identify the incidence rate and key influencing elements among Korean men in their thirties. METHODS: A cross-sectional study involving 934 male participants was performed using complex sampling analysis. Various influencing elements were investigated, including age, height, weight, body mass index, waist circumference, skeletal muscle mass index, smoking and drinking behaviors, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, fasting glucose levels, triglyceride, and cholesterol levels. RESULTS: The incidence rate was 2.90%. The key influencing elements were age, height, weight, body mass index, waist circumference, skeletal muscle index, systolic blood pressure, fasting glucose, triglyceride, and total cholesterol (p < .05). CONCLUSION: This study identified the incidence rate and key influencing element for CALSMO among Korean younger community-dwelling men.

The relationship of diet habits, obesity and level of oral health among elementary school children (초등학생의 식습관과 비만 및 구강건강수준과의 관련성)

  • Objectives : This study was to investigate the impact of dietary habits and obesity on level of oral health in the elementary school children and to characterize the relationship among dietary habits, obesity and level of oral health by DMFT index and perceived oral health. Methods : Participants were 314 total students from one elementary school who lived Yeosan. Self-administered questionnaires were given to the subjects from March 25 through May 12, 2008, to identify their the degree of dietary habits, perceived oral health. A trained investigator made an oral examination of them in natural light using a mirror and explorer to determine their DMFT index. We classified the subjects into Data were analyzed with T-test, one-way ANOVA, and Duncan's multiple range test, pearson correlation coefficient and multiple regression using the SPSS WIN 12.0 program. Results : Regarding dietary habit, the subjects achieved a mean of 10.52${\pm}$3.80 out of a maximum 20 points. The DMFT index in the subject was 0.60${\pm}$2.03. The group of obesity by gender were 19.2% and 22.5%. Moreover, those who were children and had more severe level of obesity felt that their perceived oral health and DMFT index were higher. There was a significant assocciation of oral health among elementary school children with obesity. Conclusion : These results suggest that oral health behavioral and attitude, dietary habits and obesity influenced the level of oral health. Thus further research targeting to positive attitude toward effective management of childhood obesity combined with significant dietary habits, may lead to promotion of oral health.

Effective Screening Test for Obesity in Obese Adolescents and the Correlation Among Obesity Index, Body Mass Index and Serum Lipid Profile (청소년에서 유용한 비만의 선별검사와 비만도, BMI 및 혈청지질과의 관계)

  • Purpose : Every year, there is a remarkable increase in the prevalence of children with excess body fat. The aim of this study is to find a useful screening method in assessing adolescent, obesity and to specify the predictable risk factors that are related to adult cardiovascular disease according to BMI and obesity index. Methods : From July to November in 2001, a total of 2,814(male : female=2,011 : 803) mid to high school students who were in the obesity range according to obesity index(>20%) were evaluated according to height, weight, body mass index(BMI), obesity index, and serum lipid levels. Results : Among the obese students over 20% by obesity index, 86.6% were over the range of 95 percentile by BMI. Among students defined as obese by BMI, 21.0% of males and 21.4% of females students had hypercholesterolemia; by obesity index, the ratio was 20.7% male and 19.0% female. The frequency of hypertriglyceremia in male students was 15.0% in group I(overweight group, 85P97p); in female students 11.8%, 20.7% and 28.2% respectively. Conclusion : In this study, using BMI alone to test the serum lipid level in adolescent obesity had a limit of 10.0-17.0% omission. Therefore using obesity index as a screening method to find the adult cardiovascular disease would rather reduce the omission rate. The risk factor of cardiovascular disease according to BMI was the increasing level of triglyceride in both male and female students. We think that using the obesity index has more rationale rather than BMI in assessing lipid profiles.

A Study of Nutrient Intake, Serum Lipid and Leptin Levels of Elementary School Students with Different Obesity Index in Kyunggi Area (경기지역 일부 초등학생의 성별과 비만도에 따른 영양소 섭취상태와 혈청 Leptin 및 혈청 지질에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among nutritional status, serum lipids and leptin of 134 elementary school students with different obesity index residing in Kyunggi-do, Korea. Subjects were assigned to under weight, normal weight or over weight group according to the their obesity index. Their nutritional status, serum lipid and leptin levels were evaluated based on 24-hr dietary recalls, anthropometric measurements and blood analysis. The mean weight, height and obesity index of total subjects was 150.8cm, 45.6kg and 5.4%. The mean % of body fat was higher while LBM and TBW (total body water) were lower in over weight subjects than those of other two groups. Total food, plant protein, carbohydrate, and vitamin C intakes of underweight male students were lower than those of overweight male students. The consumption of total fat was the highest in the female normal weight subjects and the lowest in female overweight subjects. Male students consumed more plant protein and vitamin C than female students. The mean daily intake of vitamin B$_2$, calcium and zinc of all subjects did not meet the Korean RDA. Also, iron intake of female students was lower than the Korean RDA. The mean level of serum leptin was the highest in male and female overweight subjects (p<0.001). The HDL-cholesterol level was the highest in the underweight group of male subjects (p<0.05) and in the normal weight group of female subjects (p<0.001) The serum level of leptin and atherogenic index (AI) of females were higher than those of males. Serum leptin of total subjects had significantly positive correlation with obesity index, weight, SBP, body fat, cholesterol intake, serum triglyceride, and AI. However, serum leptin was negatively correlated with LBM, TBW, intake of plant protein, vitamin B$_1$, vitamin C and serum HDL-cholesterol. Obesity index was also positively correlated with weight, SBP, body fat, serum triglyceride and AI. To summarize the results, the vitamin B$_2$, calcium, zinc, iron and fiber intakes should be supplied to elementary school students, especially those who were overweight. The average serum leptin level of students showed remarkably positive correlation with obesity index, body fat, serum lipids and AI. Also, it was suggested that the serum leptin might be related to the dietary factors like cholesterol, plant protein, vitamin B$_1$ and vitamin C of elementary school students.
