The overwintering crops, barley, wheat, oat and triticale etc, have been received in korea as high-quality roughage for round-baled silage making as livestock feed. Studies were carried out to evaluated the effects of seed blending on growth, yield and feed value between barley and wheat, triticale and oat, respectively. The results are summarized as follows : The barley was declined in the growth and spike's size as affected by sown as mixed seeding with triticale, but not effected with oat. The total fresh yield were increased by grown as mixed seeding with wheat, triticale and oat, but the dry matter yield were not significantly increased because of the low percentage of dry matter and the decrease of barley's growth. The neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and crude protein content were increased by seed blending, but acid detergent fiber (ADF) and digestible dry matter (DDM) content were decreased. The feed value was improved by seed blending of barley and wheat, but not significant at seed blending of triticale and oat. Because of the flourishing tillers, difference of heading date and abundant leaves of oat, the optimum crop for mixed seeding with barley for increment of forage productivity was oat in middle area of korea.

Lignin degrading bacterium Pseudomonas sp. LG2 was able to degrade lignin substrate to a lot of APPL compound. APPL compound was detected in culture supernatants from Pseudomonas sp. LG2 grown with BSC(brewer's spent grain). FAE(ferulic acid esterase) and xylanase are induced from Pseudomonas sp. LG2 in the presence of carbon sources such as oat spelt xylan, HBSG I, II(hydrolyzed brewer's spent grain I, II) and AFBSG(autoclaved fraction from brewer's spent grain). However, xylanase and FAE are not induced by growth of Pseudomonas sp. LG2 on xylose and arabinose. Pseudomonas sp. LG2 is grown on medium containing oat spelt xylan, HBSG I, II and AFBSG and the induction of FAE and xylanase activities of extracellular proteins determined during 14 days. Maximum level of xylanase activity(5.3 U/mg) found at 6 days in culture contained oat spelt xylan as carbon source, whereas maximum level of FAE activity(15.4 mU/mg) was found at 8 days in culture contained AFBSG as carbon source. Most ferulic acid was released in culture supernatants when Pseudomonas sp. LG2 grown on oat spelt xylan, HBSG I, II and AFBSG. FAE of extracellular enzymes was also specific activity on methyl ferulic acid, methyl caffeic acid and methyl p-coumaric acid respectively, but not methyl sinapinic acid, methyl vanillic acid and methyl gallic acid.
The cationic isoperoxidases were isolated from oat root tips which had been grown in treatment with $1{\times}10^{-4}$ M alachlor and purified about 30-fold by treatment with ethylalchol and ion exchange chromatography on DEAF-celluose and CM-sephadex medium. The oat root was found to contain three isoperoxidase. The major activity peak (B) represented 65% of the total isoperoxidase activity. After purification, the major peak of isoperoxidase was purified about 37-fold from the oat root. Analysis of the major peroxidase peak(column fraction 58-78) by SDS revealed a single band which corresponed to a molecular mass of 42.5 kD. In vitro, isoperoxidase activies were inhibited by IAA. Isoperoxidase(50 unit) significantly inhibited 70.2% of cell division in oat root and 54.2% of cell elongation in oat coleoptile as compared with control.

The yield and quality of winter forage crops such as oats could increase by mixed sowing with a winter legume such as hairy vetch(Vicia villosa Roth). The purpose of this study was to improve the forage quality and productivity using Oat-Hairy vetch mixture in winter season for three years. The results of this experiments were summarized as follows. In mix seeding of oat and hairy vetch, the dry matter(DM) content of herbage was 15∼16% in fall-harvest and 19∼20% in spring-harvest. Crude protein(CP) content of hairy vetch was the highest as 30.1% and the mixture was higher than that of oat. Acid detergent fiber(ADF) and neutral detergent fiber(NDF) content of hairy vetch was lower, but in vitro dry matter digestibility(IVDMD) and total dry matter digestibility(TDN) content was higher than that of oat. Although oat showed the low yield by 3.7∼4.4 DM t/ha, the Fall-seeded-Spring-harvest hairy vetch plot showed highly production by 9.5 DM t/ha. Crude protein and TDN yield of Fall-seeded-Spring-harvest plots were higher than those of others. According to this study, the highest dry matter yield could be obtained by Fall-seeded-Spring-harvest. It would be recommend in cropping field for oat.

To evaluate the possibility of predicting a specific nutrient component, which nay be difficult in analysis, from a component of nutrient relatively easy to analyze, six grass roughage sources (bermuda grass hay, klein grass hay, oat hay, orchard grass straw, tall fescue straw and timothy hay) mainly used in Korea were analyzed for the heat-stable $\alpha-amylase$ treated neutral detergent fiber (aNDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), acid detergent lignin (ADL), neutral detergent insoluble crude protein (NDICP) and acid detergent insoluble crude protein (ADICP) as well as proximate analytical components, and correlation coefficients between nutrient components were calculated. Some chemical components appeared to have significant correlation (p<0.05) through Pearson's correlation coefficients (i.e. between crude protein (CP) and NDICP in oat hay, orchard grass straw and tall fescue, between CP and ADICP in oat hay and timothy hay, between crude fiber (CF) and aNDF in klein grass hay, tall fescue straw and timothy hay, between CF and ADF in oat hay, tall fescue straw and timothy hay, and between CF and ADL in orchard pass straw and timothy hay). It is therefore suggested that it would be worthy to predict a specific nutrient component, which may be difficult in analysis such as aNDF, ADF, ADL, NDICP and ADICP, from a component of nutrient relatively easy to analyze such as CP and CF. However, it would be needed to improve the correlation coefficients, more samples should be measured.

This study was to optimize the harvest time of several winter cereal forage crops. Barley, rye, oat, triticale and wheat were evaluated for the quantity and quality of hay and silage at four different harvesting stages, including heading, 10 days after heading (DAH), 20 DAH and 30 DAH. Barley and wheat harvested at 20 DAH, and oat and triticale at 30 DAH showed maximum dry matter yield. Crude protein content of barley, wheat, triticale and oat decreased significantly with advancing crop maturity. Mean crude protein content was the highest in rye and the lowest in oat. The NDF and ADF content of barley, wheat, triticale and oat decreased with late harvest, while rye increased. Maximum total digestible nutrients (TDN) content was recorded in barley and wheat harvested at 20 DAH, in triticale and oat at 30 DAH, and in rye at heading. The maximum TDN content of silage, 66.98%, was recorded in barley, followed by wheat, triticale, oat and rye. However, The crude protein, NDF and ADF of silage was 1 to 4 times higher than those of hay. In this study, barley harvested at 20-25 DAH, wheat and triticale at 30 DAH, and rye at heading provided a good compromise between dry matter yield and forage quality. At this stage, a sufficient quantity of fodder with moderate forage quality was obtained.

Oats (Avena sativa L.) are well known for having high contents of bioactive compounds and health benefits. The objective of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant compounds and antioxidant activities of methanolic extracts from milling fractions and whole grains of oat. The contents of total polyphenolics and flavonoids were analyzed by spectrophotometric methods. ABTS radical and DPPH radical scavenging activities and reducing power were used to compare relative antioxidant activities of milling fractions from oat. Total polyphenolics and flavonoids were much more abundant in oat bran extract than in extracts from whole grain and endosperm. In addition, high levels of ABTS radical (42.34 mg Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC)/100 g sample) and DPPH radical (24.18 mg TEAC/100 g sample) scavenging activities and reducing power ($A_{700}=0.76$) were detected in oat bran. The results of this study indicate that oat bran has significantly higher antioxidant activities and appears to have significant health benefits.

This study was carried out to investigate the growth characteristics, yield, and chemical compositions of winter forage crops cultivated after rice harvest in the central inland region. The experimental design was arranged in a randomized block design with three replications. The treatments consisted of 4 species (Rye, Oat, Triticale and Italian ryegrass), and varieties were "Marton", "Donghan", "Shinyoung" and "Kowinnearly", respectively. As a result, dry matter yield and TDN yield were higher in rye than in the other winter forage crops, and lowest in Oat(p<0.05). Crude protein and crude fat content were significantly higher in Italian ryegrass(p<0.05). However, Crude ash and ADF content did not show significant difference among winter forage crops. NDF content was higher in order of Rye > Triticale > Oat > Italian ryegrass(p<0.05). TDN and total amino acid content (EAA+NEAA) were higher in order of winter forage crop with high crude protein content (Italian ryegrass > Oat > Triticale > Rye). Total mineral content was higher in order of Rye > Triticale > Oat > Italian ryegrass(p<0.05), and total free sugar content was higher in order of Oat > Italian Ryegrass > Triticale > Rye(p<0.05). Compared with the results above, Italian ryegrass and Oat are high in crude protein, TDN, amino acid and free sugar content. Rye and Triticale have the merit that feed value is decreased but high yield(dry matter and TDN yield) can be maintained. Therefore, it is advantageous to grow Rye and Triticale as winter forage crops after rice harvest in the central inland region.
The purpose of this study was to promote the consumption of cereals rich in dietary fiber by substituting brown rice, barley, oat and goami powder for flour in making muffins. All cereals powder was prepared by grinding for 15 min. The appropriate water quantity for cereal powders muffins was set at 105 mL. The volume index of the flour muffins was 132 mL, while that of cereal powders muffins was 117 mL for broun rice muffins, 118 mL for barley muffins, 132 mL for oat muffins and 119 mL for respectively for goami powder muffins. The hardness of the flour muffins, measured by a texture analyzer, was $2.03{\times}10^3\;g/cm^2$, and the other powder muffins were $3.27{\times}10^3\;g/cm^2$ for broun rice muffins, $3.33{\times}10^3\;g/cm^2$ for barley muffins, $2.38{\times}10^3\;g/cm^2$ for oat muffins, and $2.33{\times}10^3\;g/cm^2$ for goami powder muffins respectively. The L-values and moisture contents of goami powder muffins were higher than those of the other muffins. In the sensory evaluation the overall preference was the highest in oat powder muffins.

The quality of silages, made from whole crop barley, rye, spring oat, Italian ryeglass, orchardgrass, alfalfa and grass-legume pasture mixtures, were evaluated under two different conservation techniques in baled silage making (BS) and conventional silages(CS). Crops materials were harvested at the stage of the greatest dry matter accumulation(hard dough for barley, soft dough for rye and oat, late bloom for Italian ryegrass and others pasture species), and baled in a self constructed square baling chamber weighted by 25~30kg in dry matter basis. Each bales were wrapped with 0.05mm thick polyethylen plastic film and stored six months long in stack silos. Barley, rye, oat and Italian ryegrass including of pasture crops produced higher quality silages in the baled silage making, due to better organic acid fermentation and lower nutrient losses during the period of storage than those in the conventional silages. TDN contents of barley silages were 65.3% in BS and 63.7% in CS, NEL value of barley silages was improved hum 6.48MJ(CS) to 6.61MJ/kg(BS) in dry matter basis. Silage quality of rye, oat and pasture crops were also improved markedly in the baled silage utilization.
