The experiments on some organic materials used in SAPS are carried out for the better sulfate reduction efficiency and the longer lifetime. Organic materials include spent mushroom compost, sewage sludge, oak chip compost and the combination of there. Reactors with mushroom compost, sewage sludge, the mixture of mushroom compost and sewage sludge, and the mixture of mushroom compost and oak chip compost maintained pH higher than 6.0. Reactors with mushroom compost, the mixture of mushroom compost and sewage sludge, and the mixture of mushroom compost and oak chip compost maintained reduction condition. Reactors with sewage sludge, oak chip compost and the mixture of sewage and oak chip compost produced COD less than 2,000ppm. Reactors with sewage and the mixture of mushroom compost, sewage sludge, oak chip compost showed about 60% of sulfate removal ratios.
We have evaluated the antifungal activities of oak vinegar to develop a natural biocide for organic cultural heritage. Fungi used in this study were screened from the cultural heritages, Kyujanggak and JanggyeongPanjeon and tested on organic substrates-degrading ability. In the results, 7 species of fungi have produced the extracellular enzymes to degrade CMC, xylan, lignin. Thus, we have used these seven species fungi to investigate the antifungal activity of oak vinegar in this study. In the result, the antifungal activity of oak vinegar indicated positive potencial. Especially, methylene chloride and ethylacetate fractions of the oak vinegar had high activities at the concentration of 5.0mg/disc. In these fractions, many different kinds of compounds such as phenolic and furfural, etc. were analyzed by GC-MS. The experiments indicated that the development of a biocide using natural extracts can have a potential to conserve of organic cultural heritages.

The mushroom cultured waste(MCW) from cork oak was evaluated as the raw material for bioethanol production. For enzymatic hydrolysis, cellulase cocktails (Celluclast 1.5L and Novozym 188) was used for polysaccharides to monosaccharides conversion. Compared with sound cork oak woodmeal, woodmeal from MCW showed higher cellulose to glucose conversion. To improve polysaccharides to monosaccharides conversion, pretreatment by sodium hydroxide was applied. Even though more xylan and lignin were removed in woodmeal of MCW than that of cork oak, concentration of glucose was higher from sodium hydroxide treated cork oak woodmeal (51.3 g/L) than treated MCW woodmeal (41.6 g/L).
Sound absorption coefficients of oak (Quercus mongolica) wood and oak mushroom bed log were measured by the two microphone transfer function method and anatomical features of oak mushroom bed log examined by stereo scope and SEM observations. The sound absorption coefficients of oak mushroom bed log seemed to be higher than those of normal oak wood specimen over all estimated frequency range. Especially, in the frequency range of 2 to 6 kHz, they were about 2~3 times higher than those of normal wood specimen. Due to fungi degradation, the specific gravity of oak mushroom bed log decreased about 70% than that of normal wood. For oak mushroom bed log, abundant pores occurred on the radial, tangential and cross sectional surface and it was considered that the pores behaved as a sound absorbing pore.
Background: The sprouts of oak species play an important role in maintaining the oak community in a disturbed environment. In this study, we cut 1-year-old oak in three times during the 3 years and measured the sprout responses to know sprouting ability of six deciduous oaks in Korea. Results: Oak sprouts have appeared in spring and fall, and some of the sprouts had lifespan as short as a month. As the number of cutting increases, sprout number of Quercus acutissima increased whereas the other oak species decreased or died. The average number of sprouts over the 3 years was from 1.4 (Quercus mongolica) to 2.2 (Q. acutissima) per individual. Quercus serrata died after the second cutting, and Quercus dentata died after the third cutting. So, the two species have the lowest sprouting ability among six oak species. The sprouts grew actively during fall and slowly in summer. The sprout length during the 3 years was in the following descending order: Q. acutissima, Quercus aliena, Q. dentata, and Q. mongolica. Sprout of Q. acutissima and Q. aliena generated steadily over the 3 years, and sprout of Quercus variabilis and Q. mongolica was changed by year. After the 3 years, the number of sprouts increased only in Q. acutissima but sprout number of the other five oak species decreased. The sprout length of Q. acutissima, Q. aliena, and Q. variabilis increased, but sprout length of the other three oak species decreased. The average survival rate of saplings over the 3 years was in the following descending order: Q. acutissima, Q. aliena, Q. variabilis, and Q. mongolica. Conclusions: As a result, the sprouting ability of Q. acutissima was the highest. Such level of sprouting ability may be the evidence of how Q. acutissima community exists as a dominant species in a disturbed environment in lowlands of Korea peninsula.
This study was conducted in a long-term experimental forest in the central hardwoods region of southwestern Michigan to retrospectively examine the role of past forest management practices and climate on red oak (Quercus rubra L.) productivity. Initially, in 1971, plots within the experimental forest were treated separately with a clearcut and shelterwood regeneration harvest in an attempt to increase red oak regeneration. From 1987-1989, a new study was initiated within a portion of the clearcut and shelterwood plots to evaluate the effectiveness of additional oak crop tree release using mechanical and chemical applications. Cumulative diameter and mortality rates of 719 red oaks were monitored across the four silvicultural treatments: Clearcut-A (clearcut without additional release treatment), Clearcut-B (clearcut with additional release treatment), Shelterwood-A (shelterwood without additional release), and Shelterwood-B (shelterwood with additional release) plus an untreated control. Increment cores were obtained from red oak trees and neighboring competitor species. Tree-ring analyses (dendrochronology) were applied to examine the effect of these silvicultural treatments and climatic factors (temperature and precipitation) on red oak productivity. The results indicated that crop tree release following a clearcut or shelterwood harvest reduced mortality rates and thus increased survival of red oak. Red oak in control plots or plots only receiving the initial regeneration harvesting treatment and no additional competition release were negatively affected by climatic stress, which included summer moisture stress. In contrast, red oak in plots that received the competition release treatment from shade tolerant tree species not only had higher tree level productivity (i.e., tree basal area) and lower mortality rates, but were also relatively more resilient to climatic stress by showing limited or no associations between climate and growth.

In the RABiTS approach to coated conductor development, successful (both economic and technological) depends on the refinement and optimization of each of three important components: the metal tape substrate, the buffer layer(s), and the HTS layer. Here we will report on the ORNL approach and progress in each of these areas. - Most applications will require metal tapes with low magnetic hysteresis, mechanical strength, and excellent crystalline texture. Some of these requirements are competing. We report on progress in obtaining a good combination of these characteristics on metal alloys of Ni-Cr and Ni-W. - The deposition of appropriate buffer layers is a crucial step. Recently, base research has shown that the presence of a stable sulfur superstructure present on the metal surface is needed for the nucleation and epitaxial growth of vapor-deposited seed buffer layers such as YSZ, CeO$_2$ and SrTiO$_3$. We report on the details and control of this superstructure for nickel tapes, as well as recent results for Cu and Ni-13%Cr. - Processes for deposition of the HTS coating must economically provide large values of the figure-of-merit for conductors, current x length. At ORNL, we have devoted efforts to a precursor/post-annealing approach to YBCO coatings, for which the deposition and reaction steps are separate. We describe motivation for and progress toward developing this approach. - Finally, we address some issues for the implementation of coated conductors in real applications, including the need for texture control and electrical stabilization of the HTS coating.

This study was conducted to determine the influence of alfalfa supplementation on intake, digestibility nitrogen and energy utilization in Korean native goats fed oak browse. This experiment was conducted by total collection method in laboratory, 1994. Diets included 100% oak bmwse(control), 75% oak browse+ 25% alfalfa and 50% oak browse + 50% alfalfa. Alfalfa supplemented diets were slightly higher CP(PO.O5). lignin (P<0.05) and tannin(P<0.05) contents than those control diets. Increasing levels of alfalfa supplementation, dry matter intake slightly increased, but no differences were observed in all diets. Digestibility for dry matter and cellular constituents showed higher for alfalfa supplemented diets than control diets(P<0.05), but NDF and ADF digestibility were similar for all diets. Alfalfa supplemented diets furnished higher dietary N, apparently digested N and retained N than did the control diets(P<0.05). Consumed energy slightly increased with increasing levels of alfalfa supplementation(P>0.05). DE was high(P<0.05) in alfalfa supplemented diets. but ME was similar for all diets. As above results, oak browse diets alone did not supply N and energy in excess of NRC recommended allowance for goats. Hence, goats fed oak browse with supplementation of protein sources such as alfalfa will be need to provides adequate nutrients.
Weight loss and nutrient dynamics of oak and pine leaf litter during decomposition were investigated from December 2005 through June 2008 at Mt. Worak National Park as a part of National Long-Term Ecological Research Program in Korea. The decay constant (k) of oak and pine leaf litter were 0.314 and 0.217, respectively. After 30 months decomposition, remaining weight of oak and pine leaf litter was 45.5% and 58.1%, respectively. Initial C/N ratio of oak and pine leaf litter was 53.4 and 153.0, respectively. Carbon % of initial oak and pine leaf litter was similar with each other; however, nitrogen content of initial oak leaf litter (0.85%) was greater than that of initial pine leaf litter (0.33%). N and P concentration in both decomposing leaf litter increased significantly during decomposition. There was no net N and P mineralization period in decomposing pine leaf litter. K, Ca and Mg concentration in both decomposing leaf litter showed different pattern with those of N and P. After 30 months decomposition, remaining nutrients in oak and pine leaf litter were 97.7 and 216.2% for N, 123.2 and 216.5% for P, 39.3 and 44.8% for K, 47.9 and 40.6% for Ca, 30.7 and 51.2% for Mg, respectively.
Six species of oak are commonly found in Korean forests growing together with evergreen pines. Korean oak forests have recently been attacked by ambrosial fungi of the genus Raffaelea and by many other fungal species that are vectored by the beetle Platypus koryoensis. We investigated a full list of the diverse decay fungi as a first step to better understand the association between these fungi and oak trees, as well as considering effective management methods for oak forests in Korea. Through examination of specimens deposited in the Seoul National University Fungus Collection (SFC) and the National Institute of Biological Resources (NIBR), 523 decay fungi (104 species) associated with oak trees were identified and a full list is provided.
