  • Recently, as the transition to the untact era due to COVID-19 accelerates, non-face-to-face and non-contact practices have become commonplace, and the OTT (Over-The-Top) service market that provides media content such as movies and broadcast programs through the open Internet is largely expanded and it is receiving great attention from the MZ generation, who are familiar with digital devices and environments. In this study, the effects of OTT service characteristics on MZ generation users' flow, satisfaction and brand loyalty were examined, focusing on Netflix users, one of the representative OTT service brands. In order to carry out this study, a total of 216 people who have used the Netflix OTT service platform were empirically verified by using the survey data of those who have used it for analysis. As a result of the analysis, it was found that among the characteristics of OTT service, contents diversity, convenience, and reliability had a positive (+) effect on flow. Also, flow has a positive (+) effect on satisfaction, and satisfaction has a positive (+) effect on brand loyalty. However, among the characteristics of the OTT service, the recommended service did not have a positive (+) effect on the flow, and the flow did not have a direct positive (+) effect on the brand loyalty. Flow had a positive (+) effect on the brand loyalty through satisfaction. Through this study, it is expected that the market revitalization of the OTT service-related industry and the increasing number of OTT service brands will be able to contribute to the establishment of marketing strategies for the MZ generation consumers, and to provide practical implications.

  • The OTT service in Korea is not as popular as that in the U. S. This study argues that one of the major reasons of poor performance of OTT in Korea is that the OTT service providers did not acquire attracting contents, thus failing to appeal to Korean users. The other reason is Korean users are not willing to use OTT services because of high telecommunications fees to use OTT services. That is why most OTT users are using OTT services in WiFi zones, such as house, workplace, or school. This study investigated the popular OTT contents in recent three years, and how these popular OTT contents are provided in OTT service platforms, and how these contents are used in different places. The results of this study may provide several implications for OTT service providers' strategies in the future, and propose policy implications for the development of OTT services in Korea.

  • Since over-the-top (OTT) service has emerged as a new way of consuming video contents, OTT markets grow exponentially and the competition among the OTT services becomes intense. Only limited systematic research effort has been paid to understand why users subscribe such OTT services among other services. Therefore, we used developmental sequential mixed methods approach to find out the quality factors and their effect on post-subscription experiences and continuance intention. In the qualitative study, we derived six factors which a user considers important to continue the subscription. Based on the explored factors, we hypothesized a research model with modified three qualities from ISSM. The proposed research model was validated through quantitative research, a survey of 226 OTT service users in South Korea, using structural equation modeling. The results indicated that content quality is the key factor affecting both perceived enjoyment and satisfaction whereas system quality affects satisfaction, and service quality only affects enjoyment. Enjoyment affects satisfaction which sequentially affects continuance usage intention. This study contributes to research by modifying ISSM through mixed methods. It also provides OTT service providers with insight to enhance users' post experience and continuance intention to use the service through qualities derived from the interview.

  • The purpose of this paper is to provide an answer for the following question: What are the major shifts and implications of the unprecedently competitive and rapidly changing media ecosystem in the era of N-screen and OTT services? I've attempted to understand the complex and competitive nexus among media from an historical context by focusing on the displacement vs. complement thesis. The TPC model by Han has been employed for the analysis of the current dynamics of US media industries by triangulating three areas: Technology/industry, public policy and consumer/culture. More specifically, the US media landscape is initially divided into two competitive turfs - the competitors equipped with OTT services and the legacy media industry, and then the traditional media industry was grouped again into PayTV group(telecom service providers with IPTV and mobile TV, cable/Satellite TV networks) and Free (over-the-air) TV networks. Six major shifts were identified by the analysis: power shift in telecom carriers, power shifts in TV industry, Telecom/OTT partnership, time shifts, place shifts, and finally business model shifts.

  • This study intends to analyze the effect of global OTT-based viewing experience of Korean video content on cultural intimacy of U.S. audiences in Korean culture. To this end, for 239 U.S. audiences aged 20 and over, this study analyzed the average differences in cultural intimacy of demographic variables before and after the use of global OTT-based Korean content using t-tests and examined the relationship between OTT viewing frequency and cultural intimacy through regression analyses. The results showed that gender and education level were not statistically significant, whereas statistically significant differences were observed among age groups, which remained statistically significant in the hierarchical regression that treated gender, education, and age variables as exogenous with viewing frequency as the independent variable. It is hoped that this study will will be helpful for research to expand the K-content market as the basic data of research on U.S. content viewers, which has been insufficient until now.

  • This study aims to contribute to the understanding of consumer behavior during the COVID-19 by comparing blog reviews of an over-the-top (OTT) online video service from before and during the pandemic. We anticipate that the COVID-19 outbreak prompts the use of the OTT service as part of an emotion-focused coping strategy derived from the loss of personal control and the subsequent avoidance motivation. We also posit that a strong yearning for life before COVID-19 will increase interest in the content that fulfills a need for nostalgia. Our analysis of Netflix reviews provides empirical evidence of the effects of an emotion-focused coping strategy and nostalgia on OTT service usage. First, the titles of the reviews posted during COVID-19 indicate that consumers were less likely to mention OTT services other than Netflix, more interested in domestic content, and used OTT services as an avoidance-denial strategy. Second, the blog content demonstrates that while pre-COVID reviews tend to focus on the practical benefits of OTT services, those posted during the pandemic focus on mood, emotions, and dialogue. In addition, interest in comedy and romance genres increased during COVID-19. Third, we identified a greater preference for realistic or everyday content that depicted the pre-pandemic era. This is the first empirical study to investigate the effects of COVID-19 on video streaming usage in Korea. In addition, this research contributes to the field of marketing by expanding our understanding of online video service users during COVID-19 and identifies practical implications for OTT services in the midst of a pandemic.
