  • This experiment was conducted to evaluate weed control effect of Butachlor, Oxadiazon, and Bifenox under three levels of water depth (0, 3, 6 cm). Number of E. crusgall. and M. vaginalis decreased as water depth increased while that of P. distinctus showed the opposite trend. Water depth did not influence number of E. kuroguwai and C. serotinus. Weed control effect of Butachlor and Oxadiazon was best at 3 cm water depth at while that of Bifenox was best at 6 cm water depth. Injury of Butachlor to rice decreased as water depth increased while that of Oxadiazon and Bifenox showed opposite trend.

  • The persistence of preemergence herbicides, butachlor [2-chloro-2,6-diethyl-N(butoxymethyl) acetanilide] and nitrofen(2,4-dichlorophenyl-4-nitrophenyl ether), at 10 ppm level in different soil conditions amended with organic matter and lime was studied under flooded and field moisture capacity. The microbial breakdown played a major role in the dissipation of the herbicides in soil. Nitrofen degradation in flooded soil was greatly accelerated, while it was slowed down in field moisture capacity as compared with butachlor. Increased amendment of rice straw to the soil shortened the half-life of butachlor under flooded condition, however it prolonged that of butachlor when the amendment was exceeded over 1% on dry weight basis. Liming the soil stimulated decomposition of the herbicides in the soil systems, which ap pears to be pH independent.

  • This pot experiment was conducted to find out the optimal fertilization ratio of the anions (N : S : P) in various soil conditions. Soil samples were collected from uncultivated mountains and hills where development for grasslands is under consideration. The optimum ratios were computed by the $Hom{\grave{e}}s$ systematic variation technique. The results were summarized as follows : 1. The optimum fertilization ratios of the anions (N : S : P) for the high yields of grass - clover mixed sward at various areas were obtained (Table 5). 2. The grass yields in mixed sward were increased by the increase of specific soil characteristics, CEC, OM, T-N, avail-$P_2O_5$. However. it was not recognizable by the contents of the cations, the base saturation, and the pH. 3. The relatively high yields of clover were positively related to the Ca and Mg contents in soils, and it was a factor of the increased total yields of mixed sward. 4. The relatively high optimum fertilization ratios of S in volcanic ash soil in the Cheju district and P in sediment lithosol in Daegu should be taken into account in determing the fertilization rate for high yield of clover in mixed sward.

  • In Korea, Brassica species planted in summer remain in rosette and do not flower. Seed production of vernalized rape seedlings grown in summer was evaluated to establish method of generation shortening and genetically pure seed production without isolation of seed fields. When vernalized rape seedlings of different maturity groups were transplanted in summer, all plants bolted and flowered, and average days from sowing to bolting and flowering was 37 and 58. respectively. It took 85days for early maturity group, 88 days for medium maturity group, and 108 days for late maturity group to mature. Seed yield of vernalized plants grown in summer was 8.8 gr per plant and 53kg per l0a which was 23% of seed yield of rape planted in autumn. However, enough seeds were produced to test oil composition and cake and to plant for a next generation. If seedlings are raised, they can be transplanted in more than 1, 000 times of original seed field, indicating that genetically pure seed can be produced without caging seed fields with nets and isolation of seed fields since other Brassica species do not flower in summer.

  • Several supplementary heating methods were investigated to find their effects on night air temperature, injury in plant, growth and yield with Hokowase strawberry(Fragaria grandiflora) under greenhouse, during early spring season in 1981 and 1982. Kerosene lamp as a supplementary heating was not suitable because of its severe injury on strawberry plants, danger of accidental fire and bad smell. Paraffine candle and electric wire heating did not injure on strawberry plant, raised the minimum air temperature in greenhouse at night, enhanced growth, flowering and harvesting time of strawberry. Paraffine candle was effective as a supplementary heating method for short period growing under greenhouse, whereas electric wire heating was suitable for long period cultivation.

  • New screening method of varietal resistance by isotope $^{32}P$ was examined in these experiments. Insects were fed for 24 hrs. in the vials, with rice seedlings absorbed the solution if $0.6\~7{\mu}\;Ci\;^{32}P$ for 24 to 48 hrs. Feeding amounts of 3 species of plant-hoppers at the different stages and duration of infestation were investigated for effective process of screening method of the varietal resistance using isotope $^{32}P$. Feeding amount of $^{32}P$ of brown plant-hopper was observed for the different varieties. The results may be summarized as follows: 1. Brown planthopper fed greatest and the feeding amount were increased in order of white-backed planthopper and small brown planthopper. Female hoppers fed more than male. 2. Feeding amount was increased in order of adult, 5th instar, adult, 4th instar, 3rd instar 2nd instar and 1st instar. The duration of $24\~48\;hours$ is considered sufficient for insect infestation. 3. New screening method by $^{32}P$ was compared with seedling bulk screening method in view of feeding amount and plant reaction. Feeding amount of $^{32}P$ by brown planthopper in Milyang 47, resistant variety to this insect, was very low, while in TN 1, susceptible variety, it was very high about one hundred tines of Milyang 47.

  • In this study, a hotspot analysis was conducted to suggest a new method for interpreting soil heavy-metal contamination data of abandoned metal mines according to statistical significance level. The spatial autocorrelation of the data was analyzed using the Getis-Ord $Gi{\ast}$ statistic in order to check whether soil heavy metal contamination data showing abnormal values appeared concentrated or dispersed in a specific space. As a result, the statistically significant data showing abnormal values in the mine area could be classified as follows: (1) the contamination degree and the hotspot value (z-score) were both high, (2) the contamination degree was high but the z-score was low, (3) the contamination degree was low but the z-score was high and (4) the contamination degree and the z-score were both low. The proposed method can be used to interpret the soil heavy metal contamination data according to the statistical significance level and to support a rational decision for soil contamination management in abandoned mines.

  • In 1980, rice was considerably damaged by abnormal low temperature. In this paper, to determine the effect of low temperature on the growth and nutrition of rice, the experiment were carried out: varietal response to low temperature in the region with different elevations. Regional differences of heading response to low temperature were observed among varieties. The difference of days between regions were bigger in tongil lines than Japonica lines. Especially, Milyang 42 and Hangangchalbeo might belong the cold suceptible group, since the varieties were severely delayed their heading in the high mountainous region as comparred to plain region. The delay of heading with low temperature was brought out grain sterility, and fertility and ripening ratio is influenced cold tolerance and elevations, and it's decreased yield. Varieties with higher grain sterility by low temperature have higher total nitrogen content, but tended to have lower potassium and phosphate contents in the flag leaf. High content of total nitrogen, low contents of potassium and silicate were observed in the sterilized grain chaff an the opposite result were noted in the ferilized grain chaff at the ripening stage. The results reveal that the balance of these mineral element may play an important role in ripening and possibly cold tolerance.

  • This experiment was conducted to study about influenced inorganic element contents of flag leaf and chaff with different nitrogen and silicate application in Jinan (sea level 303m). The recommended rate of fertilizer application above N 15kg/10a was poor for dry production increment in cold in July elevation and was demanded increment of silicate. In the elevation of cold in July high rates of nitrogen application produced more incomplete grain and a reduced cold tolerance. These effects were due to over-content of soluble nitrogen within flag leaf and disturbance of uptaking potassium and silicate. On the other hand, the application of silicate could increase yield by promoting resistance to cold- damage. The application of increasing level of nitrogen resulted in increasing the contents of total nitrogen and phosphate in both sterile and fertile glumes. The contents of potassium and calcium were the highest at the level of nitrogen 10 - 15kg/10a, but magnessium was rather high at low nitrogen levels. It is interesting that at any level of nitrogen, over 6% higher silicate contents were noted in the fertile chaff than in the sterile chaff. Application of increasing level of silicate fertilizer decreased total nitrogen contents, but increased the contents of phosphate, potassium. and silicate in the chaff. Increasing rate of silicate content by increasing silicate addition was remarkably higher in the fertile chaff than in the sterile chaff.
