  • The performance characteristics of a scroll expander is the most important variable for the performance of organic Rankine cycle system. In this paper, the performance characteristics of a scroll expander was identified using 1kW class organic Rankine cycle system with various operating conditions. The ORC system is composed of an evaporator, a scroll expander, a condenser and a working fluid feed pump that uses R245fa as working fluid. The hot water temperature was controlled from $80^{\circ}C$ to $115^{\circ}C$ by the 50kW-class electric water-heater. The maximum isentropic efficiency of the scroll expander was measured about 77%, and the shaft power was measured from 0.5 kW to 1.8 kW according to heat source temperatures.

  • The power generation method using expensive diesel has operation problems such as high cost diesel generator and a lack of reserved power due to increase of power demand in some islands, requiring expansion of power generation facilities. To solve this problems, it is necessary to improve the efficiency of power generation facilities through an ORC(Organic Rankin Cycle) system application that uses waste heat as a heat source. Therefore, localized application technology of price competitive and highly reliable ORC power generation system is needed, and optimization technology of generators is having great effect, so this study performed two generator designs to get a high-efficiency generator with an optimized 30kW output. The comparison of simulation data for two designed models showed that a generator with SPM factor of 46.2% had an efficiency of 92.1% and a power ouput of about 23.2kW based on 12,000rpm, a generator with SPM factor of 44.46%, had a power output of 27.9kW and efficiency of 93.6% based on above rpm. For the verification of improved design model with SPM factor of 44.46%, the prototype test system with 110kW motor dynamometer was installed and got to the efficiency of 92.08% with conditions of the rated capacity 25kW at 12,000rpm, the test results of prototype generator showed the validity of generator design.

  • The concentration of selenium in grain samples was determined using isotope dilution method in ORC-ICPMS. The experimental conditions were optimized to $H_2$ mode and the flow rate was $4.0\;mL\;min^{-1}$. ORC in $H_2$ mode proved to eliminate most of polyatomic interferences except $BrH^+$ when Br is present in sample matrix. Chemical removal of Br was very difficult and the mathematical correction was successfully employed. The fraction of $BrH^+$ generated from Br at the current experimental condition was 14.1%. The signal on m/z 82 was corrected and calculated for isotope dilution. The analytical reliability of the propose method was successfully evaluated by analyzing the certified standard reference material NIST SRM 1566 and 1567. The method was applied to real samples and the results are $0.034{\pm}0.001\;{\mu}g\;g^{-1}$ for white rice, $0.059{\pm}0.002_5\;{\mu}g\;g^{-1}$ for brown rice, $0.029{\pm}0.001_4\;{\mu}g\;g^{-1}$ for black rice, and $0.034{\pm}0.002\;{\mu}g \;g^{-1}$ for barley. The detection limits ($3\sigma$) for Se was $0.012\;ng\;g^{-1}$.

  • Organic Rankine cycles (ORC) can be used to produce power from heat at different temperature levels available as geothermal heat, as biogenic heat from biomass, as solar or as waste heat. In ORC working fluids with relatively low critical temperatures and pressures can be compressed directly to their supercritical pressures and heated before expansion so as to obtain a better thermal match with their heat sources. In this work thermal performance of ORC with and without an internal heat exchanger is comparatively investigated in the range of subcritical and transcritical cycles. R134a is considered as working fluid and special attention is paid to the effect of turbine inlet pressure on the characteristics of the system. Results show that operation with supercritical cycles can provide better performance than subcritical cycles and the internal heat exchanger can improve the thermal efficiency when the temperature of heat source becomes higher.

  • Optimization procedures of performance analysis for ORC(Organic Rankine Cycle) system are established to the characteristics of low temperature heat sources such as open-type and closed-type. Effective heat recovery and heat extraction related to maximum power of the cycle as well as heat quality and thermal efficiency must be considered in the case of the open-type low temperature heat source. On the other hand, in the case of the closed-type low temperature heat source, only thermal efficiency is important due to constant heat input. In this study, thermal efficiency and exergy efficiency representing a level of close to Carnot cycle are studied, as useful index for the optimization of the ORC system. To validate the results of cycle analysis, those are compared with appropriate experimental data of ORC system as a thermal efficiency point of view.

  • The thermal efficiency of energy-to-power conversion becomes uneconomically low when the temperature of heat source drops below $370^{\circ}C$. ORC (Organic Rankine Cycle) has attracted much attention in last few years due to its potential in reducing consumption of fossil fuels and relaxing environmental problems, and its favorable characteristics to exploit low-temperature heat sources. In this work thermodynamic performance of ORC using nine working fluids is comparatively assessed. Special attention is paid to the effect of system parameters such as turbine inlet temperature and pressure on the characteristics of the system such as volumetric flow rate and quality at turbine exit, latent heat, net work as well as thermal efficiency. Results show that in selection of working fluid it is required to consider various criteria of performance characteristics as well as the thermal efficiency. Results also show that the system efficiencies become same irrespective of kind of working fluid when the temperature of heat source decreases to low range.

  • Organic Rankine cycle (ORC) is an useful cycle for power generation system with low temperature heat sources ($80{\sim}400^{\circ}C$). Since the boiling point of operating fluid is low, the system is used to recover the low temperature heat source of waste heat energy. In this study, a ORC with R134a is applied to recover the waste energy of condenser of coal fired power plant. A system model is developed via Thermolib$^{(R)}$ under Simulink/MATLAB environment. The model is composed of a refrigerant heat exchanger for heat recovery from coal fired condenser, a drum, turbine, heat exchanger for ORC heat rejection, storage tank, water recirculation pump and water drip pump. System analysis parameters were heat recovery capacity, type of refrigerants, and types of turbines. The simulation model is used to analyze the heat recovery capacity of ORC power system. As a result, increasing the overall heat transfer coefficient to become the largest of turbine power is the most economical.
