Hot Water Extract of Wheat Bran Attenuates White Matter Injury in a Rat Model of Vascular Dementia

  • Vascular dementia is characterized by white matter lesions involving the demyelination and activation of astrocytes and microglia. In a previous study, we showed that the supernatant of a laboratory-scale, hot water extract of ground whole wheat (TALE) attenuated white matter injury and astrocytic activation in a rat model of bilateral common carotid artery occlusion (BCCAO). In the present study, we made several modifications to the hot water extraction process to remove starch and enable large-scale production. We used wheat bran (WB), which contains less starch, instead of ground whole wheat. In addition, we removed starch granules with a decanter before hot water extraction. The final product, wheat bran extract (WBE), contained 2.42% arabinose, a surrogate marker of arabinoxylan, which is an active constituent of WBE. Supplementation of the rat model of BCCAO with WBE (400 mg/kg/day) for 33 days attenuated white matter injury, which was assessed by Luxol Fast Blue staining, in the corpus callosum (cc) and optic tract (opt) regions. Attenuation of white matter injury in the opt region was accompanied by improvement of the pupillary light reflex. Immunochemical staining revealed that supplementation with WBE reduced astrocytic activation in the cc and opt regions and reduced microglial activation in the opt region. These findings indicate that supplementation with WBE is effective at attenuating white matter injury accompanied by the inhibition of astrocytic and microglial activation. Therefore, extracts from WB, a cheap by-product of wheat milling, can be developed as a nutraceutical to prevent vascular dementia, a disease for which there is no approved pharmaceutical treatment.

The Assignment-Swap Algorithm for Large-scale Transportation Problem with Incomplete Cost Lists (불완전 비용 리스트를 가진 대규모 수송문제의 배정-교환 알고리즘)

  • This paper suggests assignment-swap algorithm with time complexity O(mn) to obtain the optimal solution for large-scale of transportation problem (TP) with incomplete cost lists. Generally, the TP with complete cost lists can be solved with TSM (Transportation Simplex Method). But, we can't be solved for large-scale of TP with TSM. Especially. It is hard to solve for large-scale TP with incomplete cost lists using TSM. Therefore, experts simply using commercial linear programming package. Firstly, the proposed algorithm applies assignment strategy of transportation quantity to ascending order of transportation cost. Then, we reassign from surplus of supply to shortage of demand. Secondly, we perform the 2-opt and 1-opt swap optimization to obtain the optimal solution. Upon application to $31{\times}15$ incomplete cost matrix problem, the proposed assignment-swap algorithm more improves the solution than LINGO of commercial linear programming.

Aviation Convective Index for Deep Convective Area using the Global Unified Model of the Korean Meteorological Administration, Korea: Part 1. Development and Statistical Evaluation (안전한 항공기 운항을 위한 현업 전지구예보모델 기반 깊은 대류 예측 지수: Part 1. 개발 및 통계적 검증)

  • Deep convection can make adverse effects on safe and efficient aviation operations by causing various weather hazards such as convectively-induced turbulence, icing, lightning, and downburst. To prevent such damage, it is necessary to accurately predict spatiotemporal distribution of deep convective area near the airport and airspace. This study developed a new index, the Aviation Convective Index (ACI), for deep convection, using the operational global Unified Model of the Korea Meteorological Administration. The ACI was computed from combination of three different variables: 3-hour maximum of Convective Available Potential Energy, averaged Outgoing Longwave Radiation, and accumulative precipitation using the fuzzy logic algorithm. In this algorithm, the individual membership function was newly developed following the cumulative distribution function for each variable in Korean Peninsula. This index was validated and optimized by using the 1-yr period of radar mosaic data. According to the Receiver Operating Characteristics curve (AUC) and True Skill Score (TSS), the yearly optimized ACI (ACIYrOpt) based on the optimal weighting coefficients for 1-yr period shows a better skill than the no optimized one (ACINoOpt) with the uniform weights. In all forecast time from 6-hour to 48-hour, the AUC and TSS value of ACIYrOpt were higher than those of ACINoOpt, showing the improvement of averaged value of AUC and TSS by 1.67% and 4.20%, respectively.

Effect of Bark Content and Densification Temperature on The Properties of Oil Palm Trunk-Based Pellets

  • Oil palm trunk (OPT) is a potential source of biomass for the production of biopellet. In the present research, biopellet were prepared from the meristem part of 25 years old OPT with various percentages of its bark (0, 10, and 30%). The highest biopellet durability was found for biopellet produced at $130^{\circ}C$ of pelletizing temperature with 30% bark content. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of biopellet showed the weak of particle bonding due to the low pelletizing pressure. The moisture content, unit density, ash content, and caloric value of OPT-based pellets were 3.55-5.35%, $525.56-855.23kg/m^3$, 2.76-3.44%, and 17.89-19.14 MJ/kg, respectively. The combustion profiles obtained by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) seemed to be unaffected by the bark content on. Differential thermal analysis of TGA curve indicated different pyrolysis characteristic of hemicellulose, cellulose, and lignin.

  • 황색 포도상구균은 급성 구강 감염에 있어서의 병원균이다. 그러나 그러한 황색 포도상구균의 병원성 기전은 완전히 이해되지 않았다. 이전 실험에서 황색 포도상구균의 단백질 A와 골격근의 액틴 필라멘트는 인체 상피 세포로의 황색 포도상구균의 침입에 관여한다. 구강 내 감염에 있어서의 황색 포도상구균의 병원성 기전을 조사하기 위해 인체의 치은 섬유모 세포에 대한 침입이 연구되고 있다. 급성 구강 감염을 가진 환자로부터 분리된 ATCC 25923 황색 포도상구균과 OPT 2 황색 포도상구균의 침입은 시간(0-120분)에 의존한다는 사실을 밝혀냈다. 60분을 초과하는 배양시간은 다시 배양된 균집락수 증가를 가져왔다. 배지에 접종한 세균의 숫자가 증가할 때 (100?10,000,000 cfu/ml/well), 직선적으로 증가한다. 단백질 A가 결핍된 Wood 46 황색 포도상구균의 침입은 단백질 A가 발현된 균주(ATCC 25923과 OPT 2)의 침입보다 훨씬 낮았다. 액틴 필라멘트의 합성을 방해하는 Cytochalasin D는 인체 치은 섬유모세포로 황색 포도상구균 (ATCC 25923과 OPT 2)이 침입하는 것을 방해한다. 이러한 결과는 구강내 감염을 일으키는 황색 포도상구균의 병원성 기전이 세포내 침입에 관여하고, 황색 포도상구균 단백질 A와 골격근의 액틴 필라멘트가 인체 치은 섬유모세포로의 황색 포도상구균의 침입 조절에 관여한다는 것을 보여준다.

A ROENTGENOCEPHALOMETRIC STUDY ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN HEAD POSTURE AND CRANIOFACIAL MORPHOLOGY (두부자세와 두개안면형태의 상관관계에 대한 두부방사선 계측학적 연구)

  • This study was designed to compare the normal head posture group with the extended head posture group in order to investigate the relatinship between head posture and craniofacial morphology. The subjects were devided into two groups; one included 80 children with normal head posture and occlusion, and the other 60 malocclusion patients with extended head posture. Their lateral cephalograms were traced and analysed based on 38 selected items. The following conclusion were reached. 1. The craniocervical angulations in normal group; OPT to SN, CVT to SN, OPT to FH and CVT to FH angles were $101.7^{\circ},\;104.8^{\circ},\;91.7^{\circ}\;and\;100.7^{\circ}$, respectively. 2. Compared with normal group, experimental group showed increase in mandibular plane angle, decrease in facial plane angle, airway space and posterior facial height but, there were insignificant differences in anterior facial height and tongue level between two groups. 3. Of the craniocervical angulations, OPT to FH angle was most highly correlated to the variables of the craniofacial morphology. 4. The effect of craniocervical angulation on craniofacial morphology in experimental group was different from that in comparison of normal group and experimental group.

  • In this paper, a Optical Voltage Transformer has been designed and fabricated to improve temperature stability caused by materials properties and insulation in measuring system, using single crystal $Bi_{12}SiO_{20}$ as Pockels effect cells for Gas Insulated Switchgear[GIS] System. LD[wavelength: 850nm] was used as optical source, InGaAs as optical detector to measure optical power, Polarizing Beam Splitter as Polarizer and Analyzer, and Multi-mode Optical-fiber[62.5/$125{\mu}m$] as Light transmission line. OPT was assembled in order to pockels effect, and adopted direct electric field type. The linearity of OPT maintains variation for applied voltage range from 100V - 3000V during the test of electric property, As the temperature was changed from $25^{\circ}C$ to $60^{\circ}C$. the result of this study shows that characteristics of OPT are good, and it can be reflected for practical optical sensors in GIS system.

Influence of substituted phenyl backbone on the fungicidal activity of 2-thienyl and 2-furyl substituents in bis-aromatic ${\alpha},{\beta}$-unsaturated ketone derivatives (비스 방향족 ${\alpha},{\beta}$-불포화 케톤 유도체 중 2-thienyl 및 2-furyl 치환체의 항균성에 관한 치환 phenyl backbone의 영향)

  • Twenty six derivatives of bis-aromatic ${\alpha},{\beta}$-unsaturated ketones as substrate(S) were synthesized and their fungicidal activities in vivo against rice blast(Pyricularia oryzae), tomato leaf blight(Phytophtora infestans) and barley powdery mildew(Erysiphe graminis) were examined. The quantitative structure-activity relationship(QSAR) between the fungicidal activities($pI_{50}$) and a physicochemical parameters of substitued($R_{2}$) phenyl backbone group in 2-thienyl and 2-furyl substituents were analyzed with regression equations. The activities of substituted($R_{2}$) phenyl backbone in 2-thienyl substituents, $1{\sim}10$ would depend largely on the resonance(R>0), molecular refractivity($M_{R}<0$) and optimal length of substituent(($L_{1})opt.=5.50{\AA}$). Whereas, in case of 2-furyl substituents, $10{\sim}26$ optimal molar attraction constant ($F_{opt}=0.49{\sim}l.11$), optimal steric($Es_{opt}=1.78$) constant and indicator variables(Io & Ip) for position of substituents. The fungicidal activity relationship of 2-thienyl substituents against Pyricularia oryzae and Phytophtora infestans have been a reciprocal proportioned.

An Improved Algorithm for Building Multi-dimensional Histograms with Overlapped Buckets (중첩된 버킷을 사용하는 다차원 히스토그램에 대한 개선된 알고리즘)

  • Histograms have been getting a lot of attention recently. Histograms are commonly utilized in commercial database systems to capture attribute value distributions for query optimization Recently, in the advent of researches on approximate query answering and stream data, the interests in histograms are widely being spread. The simplest approach assumes that the attributes in relational tables are independent by AVI(Attribute Value Independence) assumption. However, this assumption is not generally valid for real-life datasets. To alleviate the problem of approximation on multi-dimensional data with multiple one-dimensional histograms, several techniques such as wavelet, random sampling and multi-dimensional histograms are proposed. Among them, GENHIST is a multi-dimensional histogram that is designed to approximate the data distribution with real attributes. It uses overlapping buckets that allow more efficient approximation on the data distribution. In this paper, we propose a scheme, OPT that can determine the optimal frequencies of overlapped buckets that minimize the SSE(Sum Squared Error). A histogram with overlapping buckets is first generated by GENHIST and OPT can improve the histogram by calculating the optimal frequency for each bucket. Our experimental result confirms that our technique can improve the accuracy of histograms generated by GENHIST significantly.

On the Homotoneity of Species Composition in the Phytosociologically Synthesized Community Tables (식물사회학적 식생자료의 종조성 균질성에 대하여)

  • Securing the species compositional integrity (typicalness and representativeness) is the essential prerequisite for an integrated management of vegetation resources using the phytosociological $relev\acute{e}s$ and plant communities of the Z.-M. school. This study is intended to develop a tool for qualitative and quantitative evaluation of species compositional homotoneity of a set of $relev\acute{e}s$ per syntaxon. The new homotoneities, actual homotoneity ($H_{act}$), and optimal homotoneity ($H_{opt}$) taking into account the heterogeneous factors of $relev\acute{e}s$ are proposed. The correlations between the floristic variables such as the vegetation type, the new homotoneities, and the previously studied homogeneous measures (e.g. Pfeiffer's homogeneity, basic homotoneity-coefficient, corrected homotoneity-coefficient, and mean floristic similarity) are analyzed by using Spearman's rank correlation coefficient. $H_{act}$ and $H_{opt}$ are effective in determining the difference of inter-synthesized units and of inter-$relev\acute{e}s$, respectively. $H_{act}$ is the homotoneity that is the most independent of the number of $relev\acute{e}s$. On actual vegetation with long-term human impact in the Korean Peninsula, $H_{opt}$ has become an aid to the more precise understanding of $H_{act}$ as substantive homogeneousness of species composition of syntaxa. It is expected that $H_{act}$ and $H_{opt}$ can be used for the selection of a sort of homogeneous vegetation data to build a phytosociological $relev\acute{e}$-database with consistency and objectiveness for national vegetation resources.
