In the competitive electricity market, various pricing methods are developed and practiced in many countries. Among these pricing methods, marginal loss factor(MLF) can be applied to reflect the marginal cost of network losses. For the calculation of MLF, power flow method has been used. However, it shows some shortcomings such as necessity of regional reference node, and absence of an ability to consider network constraints. The former defect might affect adversely to the equity of market participants and the latter might generate an inappropriate price signal. To overcome these defects, the utilization of optimal power flow(OPF) is suggested in this paper. 30-bus system is used for the case study to compare the MLF by the power flow and the OPF method for 24-hour dispatching and pricing.

Power utilities must satisfy both supplying high quality power economically and reducing EMF levels. In general, in order to reduce EMF levels from transmission line, it is effective to install shielding wires, configure wires with minimal space or modify structure of other conductors, etc., but these techniques require much cost and time. To some extent, the EMF levels associated with critical transmission lines can be reduced by redistributing the scheduled power generation, since it can change the power flows. There this technique can be readily applied without modifying other structures. This paper considers the OPF(Optimal Power Flow) with the EMF constraints in transmission lines to determine the power generation redistributions and demonstrates numerically the effectiveness of the approach.

This paper proposes a framework for determining the minimum load shedding for restoring solvability. The framework includes a continuation power flow (CPF) and an optimal power flow (OPF). The CPF parameterizes a specified outage from a set of multiple contingencies causing unsolvable cases, and it traces the path of solutions with respect to the parameter variation. At the nose point of the path, sensitivity analysis is performed in order to achieve the most effective control location for load shedding. Using the control location information, the OPF for locating the minimum load shedding is executed in order to restore power flow solvability. It is highlighted that the framework systematically determines control locations and the proper amount of load shedding. In a numerical simulation, an illustrative example of the proposed framework is shown by applying it to the New England 39 bus system.
This paper presents the method for computing the power economic dispatch with an optimal power flow (OPF) computation algorithm, considering the power factor limits constraint. Efficient reactive power planning enhances economic operation as well as system security. Accordingly, an adequate level of power factor limits for the load buses should be evaluated for economic operation. The power factor limits are included and described into the OPF's objective function. The proposed method is applied to IEEE 26 buses system.

Optimal Power Flow (OPF) solution by the Newton's method provides a reliable and robust method to classical OPF problems. The major challenge in algorithm development is to identify the binding inequalities efficiently. This paper proposes a simple strategy to identify the binding set. From the mechanism of penalty shifting with soft penalty in trial iteration, an active binding set is identidied automatically. This paper also suggests a technique to solve the linear system whose coefficients are presented in the matrix from. This implementation is highly efficient for sparsity programming. Case studies for 3, 5, 14, 118 bus and practical TPC-190, KEPCO-306 bus systems are performed as well.

This paper presents a mathematical decomposition coordination method to implementing the distributed optimal power flow (OPF), wherein a regional decomposition technique is adopted to parallelize the OPT. The proposed approach is based on the Alternating Direction Method (ADM), a variant of the conventional Augmented Lagrangian approach, and makes it possible the independent regional AC-OPF for each control area while the global optimum for the entire system is assured. This paper is an extension of our previous work based on the auxiliary problem principle (APP). The proposed approach in this paper is a completely new one, however, in that ADM is based on the Proximal Point Algorithm which has long been recognized as one of the attractive methods for convex programming and min-max-convex-concave programming. The proposed method was demonstrated with IEEE 50-Bus system.
Transmission congestion is one of the Key factors to local market power in competitive electricity markets. Withholding is a one of the methods exercise the market power. This paper presents an alternative methodology in market power under transmission congestion and withholding. The proposed methodology was demonstrated with the Optimal Power Flow(OPF). Case study is fulfilled by GAMS simulation.
This paper aims to identify and clarify the cyber security risks and their interaction with the power system in Smart Grid. The EMS and other communication networks interact with the power system on a real time basis, so it is important to understand the interaction between two layers to protect the power system from potential cyber threats. In this study, the optimal power flow(OPF) and Power Flow Tracing are used to assess the interaction between the EMS and the power system. Through OPF and Power Flow Tracing based analysis, the physical and economic impacts from potential cyber threats are assessed, and thereby the quantitative risks are measured in a monetary unit.

Optimal Power Flow (OPF) is becoming more and more important in the deregulation environment of power pool and there is an urgent need of faster solution technique for on-line application. So this paper presents parallel genetic algorithm-tap search for the solution of the OPF. The control variables modeled unit active power outputs, generator-bus voltage magnitudes and transformer-tap settings. A number of functional operating constraints, such as branch flow limits, load bus boltage magnitude limits and generator reactive capabilities are included as penalties in the fitness function. In parallel GA-TS, GA operators are executed for each process. If best fitness of the GA is not changed for several generations, TS operators are executed for the upper three populations to enhance the local searching capabilities. With migration operation, best string of each node is transferred to the neighboring node after predetermined iterations are executed. For parallel computing, we developed a PC-cluster system consisting of 8 PCs. Each PC employs the 2 GHz Pentium IV CPU and is connected with others through ethernet switch based fast ethernet. To show the usefulness of the proposed method, developed algorithm has been tested and compared on an IEEE 30-bus system in the reference paper. From the simulation results, we can find that the proposed algorithm is efficient for the OPF.

Objective: The aim of the present study was to investigate the beneficial effects of dietary supplementation with oil palm frond (leaf) (OPF) with and without oil palm meal (OPM) on nutrient intake and digestibility, ruminal fermentation and growth performance in goats. Methods: Six female crossbred goats were fed for 28 days of 3 diet treatments; 100% para-grass (T1); 50% para-grass + 50% OPF (T2), and 30% para-grass + 50% OPF + 20% OPM (T3). Body weight, rectal temperature, respiratory rate, and urine volume, food intake, dry matter intake and water intake were measured daily. Nutrient digestibility was determined from five consecutive days of last week in each diet. Ruminal fluid, urine and blood were collected at the end for determination of rumen protozoa and volatile fatty acid contents, urinary allantoin excretion, blood cell count and chemistry profiles. Results: Goats fed T2 and T3 showed higher dry matter and nutrients intakes while protein digestibility was suppressed compared with those for T1. Crude fat digestibility declined in T2 but maintained after adding the OPM (T3). High fat intake by giving OPF and OPM corresponded to a higher ruminal acetate/propionate ratio (C2/C3) and serum cholesterol level. An increased urinary allantoin/creatinine ratio was found in T2 and T3 compared with T1, implying an increased number of ruminal microbes. Conclusion: Increased dry matter intake in T2 and T3 suggested that oil palm by-products are partly useful as a replacement for para-grass in goats. Replacement with the by-products increased plasma cholesterol level, which suggested that these products are a useful energy source. Changes in rumen parameters suggested an increased microbial number and activity suitable for acetate production. However, the limited digestibility of protein implies that addition of high protein feeds may be recommended to increase body weight gain of goats.
