Chromosome 18q alteration plays a key role in colorectal tumorigenesis, and loss of heterozygosity at 18q is associated with a poor prognosis in colon cancer. DCC(Deleted in Colorectal Cancer) is a putative tumor- suppressor gene at 18q21 that encodes a transmembrane protein with structural similarity to neural cell adhesion molecule that is involved in both epithelial and neuronal cell differentiation. DCC is implicated in regulation of cell growth, survival and proliferation. Thus, tumor progression in squamous cell carcinoma, stomach cancer, colorectal cancer correlates with downregulation of DCC expression. The mechanism for DCC suppression is associated with hypermethylation of the DCC gene promoter region. Hence, the goal of this study is to identify the promoter methylation responsible for the down-regulation of DCC expression in oral squamous cell carcinoma. 12 of tissue specimens for the study are excised and gathered from 12 patients who are diagnosed as SCC in department of OMS, dental hospital, dankook university. To find expression of DCC in each tissue samples, immunohistochemical staining, RT-PCR gene analysis and methylation specific PCR are processed. The results are as follows. 1. In the DCC gene RT-PCR analysis, 5(41.6%) of 12 specimens of oral squamous cell carcinoma did not expressed DCC gene. 2. In the promoter methylation specific PCR analysis, 5(41.6%) of 12 specimens showed promoter methylation of DCC gene. 3. In the immunohistochemical staining of poor differentiated and invasive oral squamous cell carcinoma, loss of DCC expression was observed. These findings suggest that methylation of the DCC gene may play a role in loss of gene expression in invasive oral squamous cell carcinoma.

BSSRO is most frequently operated among orthognathic surgery techniques for repairment of maxillofacial deformities. In case of patients with maxillofacial asymmetry accompanying mandibular protrusion who are operated by BSSRO, this study considers the recovering time for masticatory force of each tooth and Masseteric EMG and the adequate time enabling normal occlusion. The patients who are operated with BSSRO under general anesthesia in Dankook Dental Hospital, Department of OMS are selected for this study. The control group is devided into 2. 26 patients with facial asymmetry accompanying mandibular protrusion are selected for group 1 and their maximum voluntary bite force and masseteric EMG are measured. Group 2 is formed by volunteers with healthy dentition who are measured maximum bite force and masseteric EMG on both sides of the mouth. At the week of 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th, Mann-Whitney U test is carried on for statistical analysis and the result is as follows. 1. Patients with mandibular protrusion showed apparently low maximum bite force and masseteric EMG than patients with normal occlusion. 2. In comparison with control group 1, Occlusal force is regained in incisors and canines at the 9th week and in premolars and molars, 11th week and masseteric EMG is regained at 11th week. 3. Comparing to normal occlusal patients, no recovery could be found in experimental group in every parts of the mouth.
Background: The purpose of the present study was to investigate the differences in the position and shape of the anterior loop of the inferior alveolar nerve (ALIAN) in relation to the growth pattern of the mandibular functional subunit. Methods: The study was conducted on 56 patients among those who had undergone orthognathic surgery at the Gangnam Severance Hospital between January 2010 and December 2015. Preoperative computerized tomography (CT) images were analyzed using the Simplant OMS software (ver.14.0 Materialise Medical, Leuven, Belgium). The anterior and inferior lengths of ALIAN (dAnt and dInf) and each length of the mandibular functional subunits were measured. The relationship between dAnt, dInf, and the growth pattern of the mandibular subunits was analyzed. Results: The length of the anterior portion of ALIAN (dAnt) reached 3.34 ± 1.59 mm in prognathism and 1.00 ± 0.97 mm in retrognathism. The length of the inferior portion of ALIAN (dInf) reached 6.81 ± 1.33 mm in prognathism and 5.56 ± 1.34 mm in retrognathism. The analysis of Pearson's correlation coefficiency on all samples showed that the lengths of functional subunits were positively correlated with the loop depth. The length of the symphysis area in prognathic patients was positively correlated with the anterior loop depth (p = 0.005). Conclusions: Both the anterior and inferior length of ALIAN are longer in prognathic patients. Especially, it seems to be associated with the growth of the symphysis area.

Etching species in CF$_4$/Ar plasma and the behavior of etching rate of Bi$_4$-$_{x}$L$_{x}$rTi$_3$O$_2$ (BLT) films were investigated in inductively coupled plasma (ICP) reactor in terms of etch parameters. The etching rate as functions of CF$_4$ contents showed the maximum 803 $\AA$/min at 20% CF$_4$ addition in CF$_4$/Ar plasma. The increase of RF power and DC bias voltage caused to an increase of etch rate. The variation of relative volume densities for F and he atoms were measured with the optical emission spectroscopy (OES). The chemical states of BLT were investigated with using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). XPS narrow scan analysis shows that La-fluorides remained on the etched surface. The presence of maximum etch rate at CF$_4$(20%)/Ar(80%) may be explained by the concurrence of two etching mechanisms such as physical sputtering and chemical reaction. The roles of he ion bombardment include destruction of metal (Bi, La, Ti)-O bonds as well as assistant for chemical reaction of metals with fluorine atoms.oms.
A modeling system that can consider the overall water environment and be used to integrate hydrology, water quality, and aquatic ecosystem on a watershed scale is essential to support decision-making in integrated water resources management (IWRM). In adapting imported models for evaluating the unique water environment in Korea, a platform perspective is becoming increasingly important. In this study, a modeling platform is defined as an ecosystem that continuously grows and provides sustainable values through voluntary participation- and interaction-of all stakeholders- not only experts related to model development, but also model users and decision-makers. We assessed the conceptual values provided by the IWRM modeling platform in terms of openness, transparency, scalability, and sustainability. I We also reviewed the technical aspects of functional and spatial integrations in terms of socio-economic factors and user-centered multi-scale climate-forecast information. Based on those conceptual and technical aspects, we evaluated potential modeling platforms such as Source, FREEWAT, Object Modeling System (OMS), OpenMI, Community Surface-Dynamics Modeling System (CSDMS), and HydroShare. Among them, CSDMS most closely approached the values suggested in model development and offered a basic standard for easy integration of existing models using different program languages. HydroShare showed potential for sharing modeling results with the transparency expected by model user-s. Therefore, we believe that can be used as a reference in development of a modeling platform appropriate for managing the unique integrated water environment in Korea.

Background: With advances in safety measures for anesthesia, conscious sedation has gained popularity in the field of dentistry and has become essential in dental practice worldwide. However, in Tanzania, intravenous (IV) sedation is rarely practiced in the dental field. Therefore, we report the establishment of sustainable IV conscious sedation in dental practices and subsequently train local OMS residents in Tanzania. Methods: In 2019, intravenous conscious sedation was initiated at the University Dental Clinic of the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Science (MUHAS), Tanzania. During the preparatory phase of the program, local oral and maxillofacial surgeons (OMSs) were given a series of lecture notes that concentrated on different aspects of IV conscious sedation in dentistry. During the on-site training phase, an oral surgeon from the United States joined the OMSs for case selection, IV-conscious sedation procedures, and patient follow-up. Patients were recruited from existing patient records at the MUHAS Dental Clinic. Results: The first conscious IV sedation program in dentistry was successfully launched at the University Dental Clinic in Tanzania. The local team of OMSs was trained on the safe administration of sedative agents (midazolam or ketamine) to perform various minor surgical procedures in a dental office. Nine patients with different ages, body masses, and medical conditions benefited from the training. No complications were associated with IV conscious sedation in the dental office. Conclusion: This was the first successful "hands-on" training on IV conscious sedation provided to OMSs in Tanzania. It laid the foundation for the sustainable care of patients with special needs requiring oral health-related care in the country.
The birnessite (7Å manganate, δ-MnO2) which is a manganese oxide and comprises manganese nodules, is a major manganese mineral on the earth surface and a precursor in the synthesis of todorokite. In this study birnessite was synthesized by three different methods: Feng et al. (2004) and Luo et al. (1998) based on redox reaction and Ma et al. (1999) based on reduction reaction. 12 birnessite samples were synthesized by different combinations of Na+ and K+ cations based on the base (OH-) and permanganate (MnO4-) reagents in the synthesis. The mineral compositions of synthesized birnessite were identified by XRD, and the two cation ratio in the mineral was measured by ICP. The products obtained after hydrothermal treatment of Mg-buserite, by the precursor of birnessite, was examined by XRD, and then phase transition to todorokite and their characteristics were compared. Our results show that the byproducts and the characteristics of phase transition by each synthetic method have different trends. Hausmannite (γ-Mn3O4) and feitknechtite (β-MnOOH) were formed by both methods in the redox reaction mechanism. By Feng et al. (2004)'s method, manganite (γ-MnOOH) phase only appeared when cation was predominantly Na+. Two birnessite samples synthesized by redox reaction mechanism showed phase transition to todorokite (10Å manganate, OMS-1) when both NaOH and KMnO4 were used together. However, single-phase birnessite was formed by Ma et al. (1999)'s method, and phase transition was confirmed only for the sample when the cation was only composed of Na+.
We have investigated the characteristics of $Al_{0.55}Ga_{0.45}N$/GaN heterostructures with and without low-temperature (LT) AlN interlayer grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. The structural and optical properties were systematically studied by Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (RBS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical microscopy (OMS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and photoluminescence (PL). The Al content (x) of 55% and the structural properties of $Al_xGa_{1-x}N$/GaN heterostructures were investigated by using RBS and XRD, respectively. We carried out OMS and SEM experiments and obtained a decrease of the crack network in $Al_{0.55}Ga_{0.45}N$ layer with LT-AlN interlayer. A two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG)-related PL peak located at ${\sim}3.437eV$ was observed at 10 K for $Al_{0.55}Ga_{0.45}N$/GaN with LT-AlN interlayer. The 2DEG-related emission intensity gradually decreased with increasing temperature and disappeared at temperatures around 100 K. In addition, with increasing the excitation power above 3.0 mW, two 2DEG-related PL peaks were observed at ${\sim}3.411$ and ${\sim}3.437eV$. The observed lower-energy and higher-energy side 2DEG peaks were attributed to the transitions from the sub-band level and the Fermi energy level of 2DEG at the AlGaN/LT-AlN/GaN heterointerface, respectively.

CDH-13(T-cadherin), which is one of a kind among the 20 cadherins, can be found mainly in wall of aorta, neuron, spleen, blood vessel etc. It is also called H-cadherin. This structural difference can explain that CDH-13 is thought to play a key role in maintaining mutual relation between extra and intra-cellular environment rather than in cell adhesion. The main function of CDH-13 is to participate in blood vessel function. Additionally, it is known to regulate cell growth and cell contact inhibition. When cells are proliferating, cell surface perceives other cells so that substance such as CDH-13 can inhibit their growth or proliferation resulting in homeostasis without endless proliferation or invasion of connective tissue boundaries. However, tumor cell itself appears to be different from normal cells' growth, invasion or transmission. Therefore, it can be diagnosed that these characteristics are closely related to expression of CDH-13 in tumor cells. This study is to investigate expression of CDH-13 in SCC and its correlation with promoter methylation. 20 of tissue species for the study are excised and gathered from 20 patients who are diagnosed as SCC in department of OMS, dental hospital, dankook university. To find development of CDH-13 in each tissue samples, immunohistochemical staining, RT-PCR gene analysis and methylation specific PCR are processed. The results are as follows. 1.Immunohistochemical staining: In normal oral squamous epithelial tissue, strong expression of CDH-13 was found in cell plasma membrane of basal cell layer. On the other hand, in case of low-differentiated oral SCC, development of CDH-13 was hardly seen. 2.The development of CDH-13 gene: In 9 of samples, expression of CDH-13 gene could be seen and 2 of them showed low expression compared to the others. And rest of the 11 samples showed no expression of CDH-13 gene. 3.Methylation of CDH-13 gene: Among 9 samples which expressed CDH-13 gene, 7 of them showed unmethylation. In addition, among 11 samples without CDH-13 gene expression, 10 showed methylation. According to the results stated above, promoter methylation were found in 13 samples(65%) among 20 of oral SCC samples. In low-differentiated SCC, suppression of gene expression could be seen accompanying promoter methylation. These phenomenon of gene expression was proved by immunohistochemical investigation. Finally, for development of oral SCC, conclusions can be made that suppression of CDH-13 played a main role and suppression of gene expression was originated from promoter methylation. Considering this, it is expected that suppression of CDH-13 from promoter methylation to be utilized as a good diagnostic marker of oral SCC.

The field experiments were carried out to examine for the mesh selectivity in trammel net and optimum mesh size, during Aug. 10~13, Non 9~13 2000 in Jumunjin, Kangwon-Do and during Jun. 1~27 2001 in Suyong-Bay, Busan. The experiments in Jumunjin area were conducted by using trammel nets with seven different mesh sizes (60, 75, 90, 105, 135, 150, 180mm) and those in Suyong-Bay were done by using trammel nets and gill nets with three different mesh sizes (60, 75, 90mm) in order to compare two types of nets of same structure. The mesh selectivity analysis was done mainly with flat fish(Eopsetta grigorjewi) that was occupied 60% out of total catches. And the mesh selectivity was written by extension of Kitahara's method included master curve with function type. The results obtained are summarized as follows 1. Total number of catch by, trammel net was 2,331 and that of gill net was 1,433, and flat fishes occupied 59.8 ~60% in total catches. 2. The value of optimum l/m by, trammel net was higher about 0.1 than that of gill net according as trammel net was 2.56, and gill net was 2.47. 3. The 50% selection range by, trammel net was wider about 1.5 time than that of gill net according as trammel net was 1.88~3.36(1.48) and gill net was 2.00~3.02(1.02). 4. The optimum mesh size(OMS) was estimated that trammel net was about 141mm and gill net was about 132mm on first maturity length(FML) 265mm of flat fish. 5. On the optimum mesh size based on the first maturity length of flat fish, The 50% range by, trammel net was wider about 76mm than that of gill net according as trammel net was 265 mm~474mm and gill net was 265mm~398mm.
