The failure of display modules in cellular phones due to drop impact depends on the materials, stiffnesses and shapes of the phones. In the early development stage of cellular phones, the behavior of the display modules due to drop impact is tested using jigs where the display modules are installed. In this study, jigs of cellular phones for drop impact test of OLED modules were designed. The material, thickness and number and orientation of ribs were considered as design variables. Jigs were designed in a way that responses of modules due to drop impact were similar to those of modules in cellular phones. The maximum principal stresses at the upper glasses of modules were considered as responses, which were analyzed using a commercial software ABAQUS/Explicit. The drop impact analysis at the height of 1.5 meters showed that the responses of OLED module in the developed jig were in a good agreement with those in cellular phone.

Microdisplays based on organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have a small form factor, and this can be a great advantage when applied to augmented reality and virtual reality devices. In addition, a high-resolution microdisplay of 3000 ppi or more can be achieved when applying a white OLED structure and a color filter. However, low luminance is the weakness of an OLED-based microdisplay as compared with other microdisplay technologies. By applying a tandem structure consisting of two separate emission layers, the efficiency of the OLED device is increased, and higher luminance can be achieved. The efficiency and white spectrum of the OLED device are affected by the position of the emitting layer in the tandem structure and calculated via optical simulation. Each white OLED device with optimized efficiency is fabricated according to the position of the emitting layer, and red, green, and blue spectrum and efficiency are confirmed after passing through color filters. The optimized white OLED device with color filters reaches 97.8% of the National Television Standards Committee standard.

ZnPc and CuPc molecules stacked similar way in the film, but showed different growth modes in thermal evaporation. The distribution of CuPc crystals did not change by the film thickness, whereas the distribution of ZnPc became random as the increase of the film thickness. The disc type nanograins of CuPc were quite regularly distributed at the initial growth regime and the regular distribution of nanograins was kept during the film growth. On the other hand, ZnPc consisted in ellipsoid shaped nanograins and the distribution of nanograins was not regular in the initial growth regime. The irregular distribution of nanograins changed to the regular mode at the later growth regime by showing structure factor in GISAXS measurement. The different initial nanograin distribution in ZnPc and CuPc was related to the different nanostructure in the mixed layer with C60 to form the bulk heterojunction.

Polycrystalline Si(polysilicon) TFTs have opened a way for the next generation of display devices, due to their higher mobility of charge carriers relative to a-Si TFTs. The polysilicon W applications extend from the current Liquid Crystal Displays to the next generation Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLED) displays. In particular, the OLED devices require a stricter control of properties of gate oxide layer, polysilicon layer, and their interface. The polysilicon layer is generally obtained by annealing thin film a-Si layer using techniques such as solid phase crystallization and excimer laser annealing. Typically laser-crystallized Si films have grain sizes of less than 1 micron, and their electrical/dielectric properties are strongly affected by the presence of grain boundaries. Impedance spectroscopy allows the frequency-dependent measurement of impedance and can be applied to inteface-controlled materials, resolving the respective contributions of grain boundaries, interfaces, and/or surface. Impedance spectroscopy was applied to laser-annealed Si thin films, using the electrodes which are designed specially for thin films. In order to understand the effect of grain size on physical properties, the amorphous Si was exposed to different laser energy densities, thereby varying the grain size of the resulting films. The microstructural characterization was carried out to accompany the electrical/dielectric properties obtained using the impedance spectroscopy, The correlation will be made between Si grain size and the corresponding electrical/dielectric properties. The ramifications will be discussed in conjunction with active-matrix thin film transistors for Active Matrix OLED.

The fracture analysis of $SiN_x$ layers, which were deposited by low-temperature plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (LT-PECVD) and could be used for an encapsulation layer of a flexible organic light emitting display (OLED), was performed by an electrical method. The specimens of metal-insulator-metal (MIM) structure were prepared using Pt and ITO electrodes. We stressed MIM specimen mechanically by bending outward with a bending radius of 15mm repeatedly and measured leakage current through the top and bottom electrodes. We also observed the cracks, were generated on surface, by using optical microscope. Once the cracks were initiated, the leakage current started to flow. As the amount of cracks increased, the leakage current was also increased. By correlating the electrical leakage current in the MIM specimen with the bending times, the amount of cracks in the encapsulation layer, generated during the bending process, was quantitatively estimated and fracture behavior of the encapsulation layer was also closely investigated.

We have studied white OLED using two types of Zn-complexes as a emitting layer. We synthesized new emissive materials $Zn(HPQ)_2$ as a yellow emitting material and $Zn(HPB)_2$ as a blue emitting material. Zn-complexes have a low molecular compound and thermal stability. The fundamental structures of the fabricated OLED was ITO / NPB (40nm) / $Zn(HPB)_2$ (30nm) / $Zn(HPQ)_2$ / LiF / Al. We varied the thickness of the $Zn(HPQ)_2$ layer 20, 30 40 nm. When the thickness of the $Zn(HPQ)_2$ layer was 20 nm, white emission was achieved. The maximum luminance was 12,000 cd/$m^2$ at a current density of 800 mA/$cm^2$. The CIE coordinates of the white emission was (0.319. 0.338) at an applied voltage of 10 V.

We synthesized new materials of $Zn(HPB)_2$ and Ir-complexes as blue or red emitting material. We fabricated white Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLED) by using $Zn(HPB)_2$ for the blue emitting layer, Ir-complexes for the red emitting layer and $Alq_3$ for the green emitting layer. We fabricated white OLED by using double emitting layers of $Zn(HPB)_2$:Ir-complexes and $Alq_3$. The doping rate of Ir-complexes was varied, such as 0.2%, 0.4%, 0.6%, and 0.8%, respectively. When the doping rate of $Zn(HPB)_2$:Ir-complexes was 0.6%, white emission was achieved. The Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of the white emission was (0.322, 0.312).

OLED device is one of the most attractive and alternative display components, which stems primarily from the self-emission, large intrinsic viewing angle, and fast switching speed. However, because of its relatively short history of development, much remains to be studied in terms of its basic device physics, manufacturing processes, and reliability etc. Especially among several issues, it should be noted that the device characteristics are very sensitive to the surface properties of transparent conducting oxide (TCO) electrode materials. In this study, we have investigated the performance of OLED devices as a function of sheet resistance and surface roughness of TCO thin films. For this purpose, ITO and IZO thin films were deposited by r. f. magnetron sputtering under various ambient gases (Ar, Ar+O2 and Ar+H2, respectively). The crystal structure and surface morphology were examined by using XRD and FESEM. Also, electrical and optical properties were Investigated.
Advanced mobile communication devices require a bright, high information content display in a small, light-weight, low power consumption package. In this paper we will outline our progress towards developing such a low power consumption active-matrix flexible OLED ($FOLED^{TM}$) display. Our work in this area is focused on three critical enabling technologies. The first is the development of a high efficiency long-lived phosphorescent OLED ($PHOLED{TM}$) device technology, which has now proven itself to be capable of meeting the low power consumption performance requirements for mobile display applications. Secondly, is the development of flexible active matrix backplanes, and for this our team are employing poly-Si TFTs formed on metal foil substrates as this approach represents an attractive alternative to fabricating poly-Si TFTs on plastic for the realization of first generation flexible active matrix OLED displays. Unlike most plastics, metal foil substrates can withstand a large thermal load and do not require a moisture and oxygen permeation barrier. Thirdly, the key to reliable operation is to ensure that the organic materials are fully encapsulated in a package designed for repetitive flexing. We also present progress in operational lifetime of encapsulated T-PHOLED pixels on planarized metal foil and discuss PHOLED encapsulation strategy.
Organic light-emitting diode (OLED) has drawn a lot of attention in academic and industrial fields, which has been successfully commercialized in mobile phones and TV's. In the field of lighting, unlike the existing incandescent or fluorescent lighting, OLED has distinctive qualities such as surface lighting-emission, large-area, lightweight, ultrathin, flexibility in addition to low energy use. This article introduces prominent fluorescent, phosphorescent, and luminescent materials applied to white OLED (WOLED). The understanding and systematic classification of previously studied substances are expected to be greatly helpful for the development of new luminous materials in future.
