Value of spray-dried egg in pig nursery diets

  • High-quality protein ingredients have been used in nursery diets, in spite of expensive ingredients, to minimize nutritional deficiency and disease problems. Recent dramatic increases in prices of protein products for nursery diets have exacerbated the challenge. Spray-dried egg may be a part of the solutions. Therefore, this review describes the value of spray-dried egg in nursery diets as a high-quality protein source. Spray-dried egg is egg by-product and is produced by only eggs without shell that are below the USDA Grade B standards. Spray-dried egg is an excellent nutrient source: 1) highly digestible, 2) excellent balance of amino acids, 3) rich content of fat, and 4) high metabolizable energy. These can be attributed to growth of nursery pigs. Beyond the provision of bioavailable nutrients, spray-dried egg also may provide specific physiological benefits. Spray-dried egg contains 1) immunoglobulin antibodies (IgY: IgG in egg yolk) that may attach to intestinal pathogens and excrete them and 2) lysozymes antimicrobial protein that can damage bacteria cell wall. Thereby feeding spray-dried egg may reduce concentration of intestinal pathogen and thus improve potential gut health or enteric disease resistance in nursery pigs. This is important for physiologically immature weaned pigs. Based on these benefits, spray-dried egg is believed to have the same benefits as spray-dried plasma protein and milk products in diets for nursery pigs. Therefore, it is suggested that spray-dried egg has a great potential as a valuable protein source in nursery diets.

Roles of Kermanshahi Oil, Animal Fat, Dietary and Non-Dietary Vitamin D and other Nutrients in Increased Risk of Premenopausal Breast Cancer: A Case Control Study in Kermanshah, Iran

  • Background: Kermanshahi oil is one the most favorable oils in Iran especially in Kermanshah province. We aimed to evaluate the role of usual intake of Kermanshahi oil and other kinds of dietary fats as well as different meats, vegetables and fruits, carbohydrates, cereals, grains, sweets, candy and lifestyle habits in risk of breast cancer. Materials and Methods: A case-control study with 47 consecutive, newly diagnosed premenopausal breast-cancer patients and 105 age and socioeconomic matched healthy women was conducted from 2013-2014 in Imam Reza hospital of Kermanshah using a standardized, validated questionnaire assessing various anthropometric, socio-demographic, lifestyle and dietary characteristics. Results: Kermanshahi oil intake was associated with a 2.1-fold (OR=2.123, 95% CI 1.332-3.38) (p=0.002) higher likelihood of having breast cancer, while daily intake of other solid animal fats also increased the likelihood by 2.8-fold (OR = 2.754, 95% CI 1.43-5.273) (p < 0.001), after various adjustments made. Lack of fish oil, white meat, vegetables, soy products, nuts and dairy products (especially during adolescence) in daily regimens and lack of sun exposure were significantly associated with premenopausal breast cancer risk in this region. Conclusions: This study suggested that animal fat increases the risk of premenopausal breast cancer but many other dietary and non-dietary factors including calcium and vitamin D deficiency are consistently associated with increased odds of breast cancer in this region.

Physiological and Proteomics Analysis to Potassium Starvation in Rice

  • BACKGROUND: Potassium (K) is one of the macronutrients which are essential for plant growth and development. Its deficiency in paddy soils is becoming one of the limiting factors for increasing rice yield in Asia. METHODS AND RESULTS: To investigate physiological symptoms under K-starvation (NP) compared with complete media (NPK) condition, we measured shoot/root length, weight, nutrients, and patterns of protein expression. The shoot growth was significantly reduced, but root growth was not affected by K-starvation. However, biomasses were decreased in both shoot and root. Uptake of K was reduced up to 85%, while total concentrations of P, Ca, Mg, Na were increased in root and shoot. To better understand the starved K mechanism of rice, comparative proteome analysis for proteins isolated from rice leaves was conducted using 2-DGE. Five spots of differentially expressed proteins were analyzed by MALDI-TOF MS. Analysis of these K-starvation response proteins suggested that they were involved in metabolism and defense. CONCLUSION(s): Physiological and 2-DGE based proteomics approach used in our study results in observation of morphology or nutrients change and identification of K-starvation responsive proteins in rice root. These results have important roles in maintaining nutrient homeostasis and would also be useful for further characterization of protein function in plant K nutrition.

  • 하수처리장의 활생오니를 분리원으로 하여 수십종의 PHA 생산균을 분리하였다. 일반적으로 hy­d droxyvalerate monomer unit의 전구물질로 알려져 있지않은 glucose로부터 비교적 많은 PHA를 생산 하는 균주를 공시균으로 선정하여 형태학척, 배양적, 생리학적 제 특성을 검토한 결과 Pseudomonas 속으 로 통정되었다. 균체 생육을 위한 최적 배양온도 벚 배양 pH는 각각 $37^{\circ}C$와 7.0이었으며, 최적 탄소원 으로셔 glucose 1 %, 최적 질소원으로서 $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ 0.2%, K1HPO. 0.3%, $KH_2PO_4$ 0.45% 였다. 최적 P PHA 생산조건을 조사하기 위하여 2단계 배양법을 이용하였다 PHA 생산은 배지성분중 $NH_4, O_4$, Mg가 결핍되 였을 때 향상되었고, 그중 $NH_4$, 의 결핍시 PHA 축적률과 HV monomer의 함량이 가장 높았다. C/N molar ratio 95.2에서 PHA 축적률이 가장 높았다. 공시균주 Pseudomonas sp. HJ는 alkane, alkanoic acid, alcohol을 탄소원으로 하여 P PHB/HV를 생산하였다. PHA의 생산량과 HV monomer의 함량은 이용된 기질에 따라 다양하였으며, 특히 hexadecane와 propiOnate를 탄소원으로 하였을 때 PHA중의 HV monomer의 함량이 49~74mol %로 매우 높았다. IH-NMR로셔 공시균으로 부터 분리정제된 PHA의 조성을 분석한 결과 PHB/ H HV copolymer임을 알 수 였였다

자갈로 구성된 미소환경에서 미생물제제에 의한 유류분해 (Microcosm Study for Bioremediation of Oil-Contaminated Pebble Environments)

  • 지속성영양염제(Slow Release Fertilizer, SRF)와 유류분해미생물을 이용한 생물학적 방법으로 오염된 자갈환경으로부터 유류를 제거하는 방법을 연구하기 위해 microcosm 실험을 수행하였다. Microcosm은 직경 40 mm 이하의 자갈을 직경 10 cm 높이 20 cm의 glass column에 충진하여 준비하였으며, 전 실험구에 유류 약 2.4%(w/v)를 첨가하였다. 실험구 I은 대조구로서 아무것도 첨가되지 않았으며, 실험구 II에는 Inipol EAP-22(Elf Aquitaine, France)와 미생물제제, 실험구 III에는 SRF와 미생물제제, 실험구 IV에는 Inipol EAP-22가 첨가되었다. 유류의 생물학적 분해도를 $C_{17}$/Pristane과 $C_{18}$/Phytane 비율료 나타내었을 때, 실험구 III에서 유류분해도가 가장 높을 것으로 나타났다. 종속영양미생물 및 유유분해미생물의 전체적인 변화와 전자전달계 활성도는 유류분해도의 변화와 유사한 양상을 보이며 변화하는 것으로 나타났다. 무기영양염류의 분석 결과 실험구 III 에서는 전 실험기간에 걸쳐 질소와 인이 제한요인으로 작용하지 않은 것으로 나타났으며, 이는 SRF가 지용성영양염제인 Inipol EAP-22에 비해 지속적으로 영양염류를 제공함으로써 자갈환경에서 유류분해가 증가되었다고 추정할 수 있다. 따라서 본 실험결과로부터 SRF와 유류분해 미생물제제를 사용하여 해안 자갈지역의 유류오염을 효율적으로 제거할 수 있는 가능성이 확인되었다.

여천산업단지(麗川産業團地)의 만성(慢性) 대기오염(大氣汚染)에 의한 해송(海松) 엽중(葉中) 무기양료(無機養料)의 변화(變化) (Foliar Nutrients Status of Pinus thunbergii Influenced by Chronic Air Pollution in Yochon Industrial Complex in Korea)

  • 만성적인 대기오염의 영향을 받고 있는 여천산업단지 지역에서 15개 해송임분을 선정하여 당년생 엽과, 1년생 엽중 수용성 유황의 축적과 질소, 인, 칼륨, 칼슘, 마그네슘 등 무기양료의 함량변화를 파악하였다. 수용성 유황 함량은 당년생 엽이 0.11% - 0.35%. 1년생 엽이 0.13% - 0.32%로서 전 지역에서 대조지역보다 높았다. 질소의 강우 당년생 엽은 0.60% - 1.42%로써 7개 지점에서, 1년생 엽은 0.58% - 0.88%로써 전 지역에서 대조구에 비해 그 함량이 낮아 1년생 엽에서의 질소 결핍이 뚜렷하였다. 인과 칼륨의 경우에는 일부 지역에서 대조구에 비하여 함량이 낮은 수준을 보였다. 칼슘은 당년생 엽에서는 0.12% - 0.35%로 8개 지역에서, 1년생 엽에서는 0.20% 0.37%로써 9개 지역에서 대조구보다 낮았다. 마그네슘은 당년생 엽에서 0.08% - 0.15%로 2개 지역에서, 1년생 엽에서는 0.06% - 1.11%로써 12개 지역에서 결핍증세를 보였다. 대조구를 제외한 15개 지점에 대해서 각 분석 항목이 상관관계를 살펴본 결과 당년생 엽의 경우에 칼슘과 마그네슘은 유황이 축척될수록 유의적으로 감소하였다. 1년생 엽의 경우에는 질소, 칼륨, 칼슘, 마그네슘의 함량이 수용성 유황함량과 유의적인 부의 상관을 나타내 여천산업단지에서 배출되는 황화합물의 퇴적이 해송의 양료상태를 교란시켜 해송림의 쇠퇴에 영향을 미치는 것으로 파악되었다.

Comparison of Calcium Content between Blossom-End Rot and Healthy Fruits in Red Pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) Grown in Open Field

  • The causes of blossom-end rot (BER) are still not understood clearly, although there was a lot of research on the development of BER over 100 years. This experiment was conducted to investigate the influence of Ca content of fruit on the incidence of BER in red pepper. BER affected fruits and healthy fruits had been harvested and the samples were divided into two parts, the upper and the lower, for chemical analysis to determine the content of mineral nutrients in the tissue. The content of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K) and magnesium (Mg) was higher in the BER affected fruits and the difference of each nutrient content was revealed much larger in the lower part of the fruit but there were no significant differences in calcium content between the BER and the healthy fruits of red pepper, in this experiment. The results indicate that it is difficult to find a certain relation between the calcium content of the fruit and the occurrence of blossom-end rot.

과체중 및 비만여성의 생식섭취가 체중감소 및 생화학적 영양상태에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of Uncooked Powdered Food on the weight toss and the Biochemical Nutritional Status in Overweight and Obese Women)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of an uncooked powdered food(UPF) on the weight loss and changes of the biochemical nutritional status for 20 overweight and 26 obese women in Iksan area. We just replaced common breakfast and dinner of the subjects with UPF. Their dietary intake status was evaluated by 24-hour recall method. Also anthropometric and biochemical measurements before and after the UPF program were estimated. The intake of energy, lipid and protein decreased and the quality of meals improved as people started to take UPF. Due to the energy loss by taking UPF, weight and body fat decreased significantly. The percentage of the body fat was high among the weight lost, from which we judged that the process of losing weight was successful. It is hard to predict whether weight loss will occur to people who are already in shape or not, but if overweight and obesity people regularly take UPF instead of other food products, we assume that UPF will help lessening the body fat. The most positive change among biochemical changes by taking UPF was the decrease of serum lipid contents. When overweight and obesity women replaced two out of three meals with UPF for 3 month period, no significant nutritional problems occurred. It seems that the 12weeks of UPF program used in this study was effective in improving anthropometric indices without producing the deficiency of iron or other susceptible nutrients.

한국의 도시빈곤지역과 농촌의 영양섭취 설태 (A Nutrition Intakes Survey of Urban Slum and Rural Areas)

  • The study deals with the empirical research on the condition of nutrient intake of low income class which be represented by urban slum and rural area, with the analysis of the factors which might influence on the prevalent condition of nutrient- intake. The method of the research was based on the spot-survey with questionaires. The result is that the levels of nutrient-intake are below the standard requirement level of nutrients in both of urban slum and rural area. The level of nutrient intake in urban slum lies in approximately 50% of the standard requirement level and 80% of the standard requirement level in rural area. The extent of malnutrition was explained in terms of the amount of calorie, protein, calcium and iron. More than half of the population in the community are below the standard requirement level of the nutrient- intake. The problem of malnutrition was serious in urban slum than in rural areas, which made a good contrast with the result of Peru study. Deficiency in calcium was most serious. The factor analysis of the prevalent condition of malnutrition in low class suggests that 1) The function of local market in supplying food is not so effective in the sense that the quality of the foods purchased id the local market is poor. 2) Low level of knowledge, the consequent ignorance and the indifference to the nutrition and the low income led to malnutrition. The level of income and the education were significantly correlated to the nutrient-intake.

Comparison of nutrient intake by sleep status in selected adults in Mysore, India

  • Insomnia has become a major public health issue in recent times. Although quality of sleep is affected by environmental, psychophysiological, and pharmacological factors, diet and nutrient intake also contribute to sleep problems. This study investigated the association between nutrient intake and co-morbid symptoms associated with sleep status among selected adults. Subjects in this study included 87 men and women aged 21-45 years. Presence of insomnia was assessed using the Insomnia Screening Questionnaire, and dietary intake was measured over three consecutive days by dietary survey. Descriptive analysis, ANOVA, and Chi-Square tests were performed to compute and interpret the data. Approximately 60% of the participants were insomniacs. People with insomnia consumed significantly lesser quantities of nutrients as compared to normal sleepers. Differences in intakes of energy, carbohydrates, folic acid, and $B_{12}$ were highly significant (P < 0.002). Further, intakes of protein, fat, and thiamine were significantly different (P < 0.021) between insomniacs and normal sleepers. The nutrient intake pattern of the insomniacs with co-morbid symptoms was quite different from that of the normal sleepers. Based on these results, it is probable that there is an association between nutrition deficiency, co-morbid symptoms, and sleep status. More studies are required to confirm these results.
