Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of supportive nursing intervention on the anxiety and nursing satisfaction of mothers with children undergoing open-heart surgery. Methods: The research design involved a non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest non synchronized design. The subjects consisted of 43 mothers of children who were expected to undergo open heart surgery, and were divided into two groups; an experimental group of 22 and a control group of 21. The experiment was administered to the experimental group a total of four times, following supportive nursing intervention protocols. The research tools used were Spielberger's State Anxiety Inventory for anxiety and Park Jung-Eun's nursing satisfaction. The data were analyzed using the $x^2$-test, and t-test with SPSS/WIN 12.0 program. Results: Hypothes 1, 'The experimental group who are given supportive nursing intervention will have a lower anxiety score than the control group' was supported(t=5.658, p=.000). Hypothesis 2, 'The experimental group who are given supportive nursing intervention will have a higher nursing satisfaction score than the control gropu wasl supported(t=-9.549, p=.000). Conclusion: The supportive nursing intervention protocol was effective in reducing anxiety and increasing the nursing satisfaction of mothers with children undergoing open-heart surgery.

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to investigate change of life in middle-aged men. Method: The research method employed Q-methodology. twenty-five participants rated 39 selected Q-statements on a scale of 1~9. The collected data were analyzed using pc-QUNAL software. Result: Principal component analysis identified 3 types of change of life in middle-aged men. The categories were labeled 'Mature-oriented', 'Effeminate-oriented', 'Juvenescence-oriented'. Conclusion: We have found change of life in middle-aged men through this research. To setup and apply differences based on this result is needed.

Purpose: This study was to compare the stop-smoking rate and nicotine dependency for an adult smoker after implementing the smoking cessation program. Method: Fourty-six adult smokers participated. Self report questionnaire and telephone interview were conducted at the pretest, 6 months later, 1 year later, 2 years later, 3 years later. Result: 1. Stop-smoking rate of smoking cessation program participants was 43.5% 6 months later, 35.6% 1 year later, 24.4% 2 years later, 45.5% 3 years later. 2. The mean of nicotine dependency for continuing smokers was significantly decreased 6 months later(paired-t=4.719, p=.000). 3. The mean of nicotine dependency for continuing smokers was significantly decreased 1 year later(pired-t=4.296=.000). 4. The mean of nicotine dependency for continuing smokers was significantly decreased 2 years later(paired-t=2.778. p=.000). 5. The mean of nicotine dependency for continuing smokers was significantly decreased 3 years later(paired-t=2.795. p=.000). Conclusion: The smoking cessation program was effective to induce cessation in the adult smoker, and to decrease nicotine dependency in the continuing adult smoker.

Purpose: This research analyzed the different factors that influenced smoking cessation motivation. Methods: Subjects were both current and past male adult smokers. Data collection was conducted in four small businesses in Seoul and one public enterprise in Gyeonggi-Province from December 10, 2011 to January 30, 2012. Reasons for Quitting (RFQ) scale which was developed by Curry et al. was used for data collection. There were 350 participants and 324 (93%) questionnaires were used for the statistical analysis. Results: Participant's level of motivation varied by present smoking, quit attempt, smoking cessation counseling, level of nicotine dependence, stages of smoking cessation, and types of smoking. Participant's drinking pattern, smoking cessation counseling, social seeking type (G) and stages of smoking cessation had a 13% explanatory power for being motivated to stop smoking. Conclusion: For participants who drink alcohol regularly, who do not participate in smoking cessation counseling and those who are in the pre-contemplation stage for smoking cessation are candidates for future smoking cessation intervention programs or smoking cessation motivation programs.

Purpose: This study was done to analyze variations in unit staffing and recommend policies to improve nursing staffing levels in intensive care units (ICUS). Method: A cross-sectional study design was used, employing survey data from the Health Insurance Review Agency conducted from June-July, 2003. Unitstaffing was measured using two indicators; bed-to-nurse (B/N) ratio (number of beds per nurse), and patient-to-nurse (P/N) ratio (number of average daily patients per nurse). Staffing levels were compared according to hospital and ICU characteristics. Result: A total of 414 institutions were operating 569 adult and 86 neonatal ICUs. Tertiary hospitals (n=42) had the lowest mean B/N (0.82) and P/N (0.76) ratios in adult ICUs, followed by general hospitals (B/N: 1.34, P/N: 0.97). Those ratios indicated that a nurse took care of 3 to 5 patients per shift. Neonatal ICUs had worse staffing and had greater variations in stafnng ratios than adult ICUs. About 17% of adult and 26% of neonatal ICUs were staffed only by adjunct nurses who had responsibility for a general ward as well as the ICU Conclusion: Stratification of nurse staffing levels and differentiation of ICU utilization fees based on staffing grades are recommended as a policy tool to improve nurse staffing in ICUs.

This study has verified Family Functioning, Communication and Spiritual Wellbeing, to increase the family functioning in Adult Women. 236 adult women were chosen as the samples for the study, they are now currently registered in the church adult women in Seoul. The instruments used for this study were the Family functioning scale by Olson, the communication scale by David H. Olson and Howard L. Barnes and spiritual wellbing Scale by Palautzian and Ellison Folkman. Data collection were form March to April, 2003. To get the descriptive statistics, SPSS Program, Pearson Correlation Coefficients and stepwise multiple regression were used for analyzing data. The results were as following: 1. Represents the degree of family functioning, communication and spiritual wellbeing, on subjects. Means scores of this study are following: spiritual wellbeing 67.92, lower level of cohesive(5.19) and adaptive(3.93), communication 58.14, lower level of open(5.15) and closed(4.71) and family functioning 95.58, lower level of religious(7.70) and existential(7.63). All each lower level of family functioning, communication and spiritual wellbeing, on subjects were derived significantly different(p.05). There were significant correlation among the variables of subjects. The cohesive family functioning score was significant related to the adapted(r=.588). Especially, the closed communication score showed inverse correlations open family functioning(r=-.424) and open communication score(r=-.680). The existential spiritual wellbeing score also was significant related to the cohesive(p<.001) and adaptive(p<.05) family functioning, open communication(p<.05). Especially, the closed communication score showed inverse correlations existential spiritual wellbeing (r=-.202). The existential spiritual wellbeing score also was significant related to the religious(r=.815, p<.001). These results will not only emphasis the need of family functioning to elevate and decrease the Closed family communication but suggest the important points of gathering various data and analysis about economic, education and marital status. Finally, related to mental health nursing, a community can get the utmost out of these results to keep offering education and practice of family mental health for adult women.

Purpose: The purposes of this study were to examine the relationships among the sense of control, social support, depression and nursing home adjustment, and to identify the influencing factors of nursing home adjustment in nursing home residents. Methods: The study design was a cross-sectional descriptive study. Data were collected from May to June of 2010 using structured questionnaires from 212 elderly residents without dementia from 15 nursing homes. Results: The levels of nursing home adjustment depended on the self-rated health, the voluntary institutionalization, and the length of stay. The nursing home adjustment was significantly correlated with a sense of control, social support and depression. The five most influential factors affecting adjustment were self-rated health, placement decision maker, the length of stay, a sense of control and depression, which explained about 51.5% of the variances. Conclusion: The findings reflect the importance of voluntary institutionalization, a sense of control, avoiding depressive mood and social support which facilitate residents' adjustment. These results can provide guidance for nursing interventions to facilitate nursing home adjustment.

Purpose: This study is to study sleep disorder, sleep pattern, and depression in adult women, and to offer basic data for a program of the improvement of women's health and nursing intervention. Method: A structured questionnaire was carried out from September 1, 2001 to October 30, 2001 on the subject of 441 females, who are above 18 years old and lived in Seoul. This research tool measured insomnia with APA's insomnia scale(1994), sleep pattern and sleep disorder factors scale(Shin et al(1999)'s), and depression with Radloff's CES-D scale (1977). The data were analyzed with a SPSS program for descriptive statistics, ${\chi}^2-test$, and t-test. Result: The result were as follows; 1) 35.1% of all participants have insomnia. 2) Sleep disorder group appeared shorter($50.98{\pm}29.41min$.) than normal group($73.03{\pm}38.7min$.) in daytime sleepiness(p=0.001). 3) Factors of sleep disorder were stress(76.6%), worry(55.6%), without reason(39.6%), and noise outside(37.4%). 4) In relation between sleep disorder and depression, group with sleep disorder($20.20{\pm}11.06$) marked higher depression score than normal group($14.25{\pm}8.81$)(p<0.0001). Conclusion: Based upon these finding, sleep disorder in adult women was influenced by psychological factors, group with sleep disorder showed a higher depression score than normal group, and which indicated correlation with sleep disorder and depression. This study shows that nursing intervention on women's sleep disorder and depression is needed and further research be done to verify the results.

Purpose: Increasing numbers of Koreans have immigrated to the United States since the late 1960s. The first generation of Korean immigrants or their parents become old and institutionalized in American nursing home setting. Although the Korean elders would experience many cultural differences in the nursing home, no study to date has investigated their everyday lives on how they live through their later lives within a different cultural environment from their own. Methods: Using ethnographic methodology, the purpose of this paper was to illustrate Korean residents' experiences and daily lives in a nursing home located in an east coastal city in the U.S. Participant observation, filed notes, semi-structured interviews were utilized by means of data collection. Eighteen Korean residents were observed, and five of them and two nurses participated in informal qualitative interviews. Results: The overriding theme from the findings is "thrown in a different world." Three sub-themes include "constant struggles in making themselves understood", "dealing with culturally inappropriate nursing care," and "maintaining their own ways of life". Conclusions: The discovered themes reflect culturally isolated lives of the participants and open a venue for designing a culturally congruent nursing care for Korean elders living in the U.S. nursing homes.

Purpose: This study was to develop and test the resilience scale for Korean nursing college students. Methods: The initial 82 items (7 factors) were developed through literature review and student interviews. Items were reduced to 55 items through content validity test by 5 experts and face validity tests by 20 nursing students. The preliminary Resilience Scale for Korean Nursing Students (RS_KNS) was administered to 302 nursing students of 4 universities in Chungnam. Data were analyzed using item analysis, factor analysis, Pearson correlation coefficients, and Cronbach's ${\alpha}$. Results: Twenty-four items were selected for the final scale. Seven factors evolved from the factor analysis, which explained 61.9% of the total variance. The internal consistency, Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ was .84 and reliability of the subscales ranged from .60 to .77. Conclusion: The resilience scale for Korean nursing college students demonstrated acceptable validity and reliability. It can be used to assess the resilience of nursing college students and is expected to get utilized in teaching and research.
