Purpose: This study is to investigate perceived stress, depression, body mass index (BMI), and nutrient intakes of soldiers in the army. Methods: The subjects were 301 soldiers recruited from two divisions of the army in Kangwon-Do. The data was collected from August 3 to 9, 2009. Perceived stress, depression, lifestyle, dietary habits, BMI, and nutrient intake were assessed. Results: Subjects' distribution for normal weight, underweight, overweight, and obese was 67.4%, 0.7%, 16.3%, and 15.6%, respectively. BMI was related to class, service branch, duration of military service and being on a diet, whereas BMI was not found to be related to perceived stress, and depression. Some nutrient intakes such as dietary fiber, vitamin C, and Calcium was related to depression. Conclusion: This study suggests that soldiers need to undergo stress, depression management, and a nutritional education program.
This study was conducted to find out factors affecting patient safety management activities at nursing devisions of two university hospitals. The indicators of patient safety activities used in the study were selected from Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture which was developed by The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality in the United States. Data were collected from 372 nurses working at inpatient wards at two university hospitals located in Seoul and Won-Ju cities through the self-administered questionnaires, and analyzed using frequency analysis, t-test, correlation, and regression analysis. The result of this study were as follows. First, The mean of patient safety management activities was 3.41 which was a little bit higher than the average level. The mean of communication within the ward was the highest, whereas that of patient safety management culture was the lowest. Second, there were significant differences in the perception of nurses on patient safety management activities in terms of the educational background, length of employment, and work hours per week. Third, three variables of communication within the unit, attitude of top management, and attitude of nurses have significant positive effects on patient safety management activities. Fourth, 37.4% of the variation in the patient safety management activities was explained by the study variables. In conclusion, hospital administration and nursing managers should make an effort to learn the knowledge of patient safety program, show their deep interest on the patient safety to the employees and motivate them to communicate effectively each other within the work unit to develop a good patient safety culture and system.
For producing large numbers of professional nurses who could manage 21th century's human health, it is necessary to review the direction of registered nurses' national examination which evaluates the nursing education and is granted a licence. For adapting to social expectation of the nurse, we have to nurture the nurses' problem solving capability in clinical setting. Seven divisions of Korean Academy of Nursing suggested clinical competency according to their categories. This paper was presented in the work-shop for setting up direction of registered nurses' national examination. We expect that this paper would be more refine and confirm through reviewing subdivisions' learning objectives and discussing clinical minimum level of competence contents with clinical leaders.
Purpose: This study was designed to search for nursing intervention strategies centering around the meaning structure of the nurse's turnover experience by applying phenomenological methods. Methods: The participants were 6 nurses in small and medium sized hospitals who had experienced at least 1 turnover. Data were collected used MP3 records. The data analysis was done by Giorgi (1985) method. Results: The results were divided into the following categories: 1) Careless decision: wrong decisions, imprudent desire, insufficient patience, unclear future, 2) Inappropriate working environment: irregular working hours, high workload, poor working environment, insufficient understanding of related divisions, lack of opinion collection, low salary, 3) Interpersonal relations problems: discord with colleagues, difficulty in relationships with others, difficulty in daily lives, 4) Lack of specialization: feeling of inertia, lack of role identification, lack of self identification, 5) Inappropriate coping: regret with clinical challenges, difficulty with a new environment, repentance, expectation, relative humility, 6) New self-dignity: expectation, new challenge, relaxing lives, decisions based on future-oriented confidence. Conclusion: The finding of this study will offer profound information on the nurse's turnover experience and provide basic raw materials for improving the quality of nursing performance and contribute to the development of hospital organization.
Purpose: The purpose for this study was to identify the present working status and tasks of nurse administrators in response to requirements of expanding nurses' roles in hospitals. Methods: The design of the study was descriptive-exploratory. The participants were 338 registered nurses who were working in hospital administrative departments. The data were collected from January 17, to March 20, 2011, and analyzed with descriptive statistics. Results: The majority of nurse administrators worked in quality assurance departments while no nurse administrators assigned in finance/taxation departments. Duties of nurse administrators were developed as 117 tasks in 11 divisions. Conclusion: These results suggest that expanding nurses' roles require developing job descriptions, nursing curricula emphasizing hospital administration, positive relationships with other health professions and a supportive system.
The rapid changes in graduate nursing curriculum have resulted in many challenges to the contents in masters and doctoral program of nursing. In order to meet the changing consumer demand, to respond the specialization in clinical practice and to reflect the evolving trend in the discipline and science of nursing, this study focussed on analyzing the present graduate nursing curriculum of one college of nursing in Seoul, Korea. In order to analyze the present curriculum, data were collected by survey from the enrolled graduate students, And curriculum contents of 10 graduate nursing curricula in Korea and 6 in United States were analyzed through internet information. Based on the data from the enrolled students' responses on educational goal and objectives and divisions of nursing and the data from the graduate curriculums of other universities both in Korea and United States suggested the future direction of graduate nursing curriculum of S university as follows; It is required that theoretical development, as well as education of enhancing clinical competences and preparation of specialization, innovative work for the change and global nursing should be included in the curriculum. Majority of respondents were agreed with 6 division of nursing(Adult nursing ,Maternity nursing ,Pediatric nursing, Community nursing, Nursing administration) and the integration of nurse clinical specialist course(such as oncology nursing specialist) into the regular courses in Master and Doctorate program was required.
This study was conducted to develop a model of a fee schedule for nursing services.'Regardless of the demand for skilled and professional nursing service today, the Korean health insurance system does not furnish a chapter for the nursing service fee schedule. A nation-wide survey of hospital nursing service fee schedules was to provide practical and realistic data about how the variety of nursing services are being charged. From September 1990 to April 1991, data from the fee schedule used by twenty hospitals located in eight large cities which are designated large medical regions in the Korea Health Care and Patient Referral System were collected. Nursing services and the fees charged for them were analyzed. The nursing services were subjected to a secondary analysis with referrence to reports on “nursing services to be charged in Korea”. The total number of nursing services recommended by the literatures was 177 : finally 141 types of nursing services were selected by investigator as chargable nursing services. In addition, data on managerial characteristics of the hospitals were collected to discover influential variables for a nursing fee schedule model. Under the assumption that all the managerial characteristics of the hospitals influenced the fee schedule, the following model was tested : Fee of nursing services (C) = f(A₁, A₂, A₃, A₄, A/sub 5/, A/sub 6/, A/sub 7/, A/sub 8/,) When, A₁ = number of nurses A₂ = the first salary of a nurse educated in a four year A₃ = scale of nursing management division A₄ = location of the hospital A/sub 5/ = the type of hospital management (profit / non-profit) A/sub 6/ = number of hospital beds A/sub 7/ = years of hospital operation A/sub 8/ = number and kinds of clinical divisions The results showed that the model should be built as follows : C = f (A₁, A/sub 4/, A/sub 5/) Each nursing service was applied to the fee schedule with consideration for the professional level and time-taken to provide the services. Detailed fee schedules were presented in the related tables. Of the 141 kinds of nursing services, 24.8% were chargeble to the Korea Health Insurance, 32.6% of the nursing services were being paid directly by the patienty. The rest of nursing services (42.6%) were not being charged to any source. It was recommened that the Korea Health Insurance Reimbursement system should add a classification system for nursing services that can be used in the national health care program. Further study is needed about how to include 32.6% of the nursing services now being paid for directly by the patients in the health insurance system.

This study purports to investigate the difference between upward and downward feedback and to find out the strategy to enhance the validity and reliability of the multi-source feedback system. Data were collected from 88 middle-level managers working at divisions of nursing, administration, and clinical technology at a university hospital located in north-eastern part of South Korea. Data about multi-source feedback of the year 2008 and 2009 were obtained from the department of personnel management under the permission of hospital top management. The collected data were analyzed using t-test, and correlation analysis. The major findings of the study were as follows: First, the scores of downward feedback were always higher than those of the upward feedback. Second, the scores of downward feedback were always higher than those of the upward feedback in both nursing and administrative staff, while no significant difference was found in technological staff. Third, the upward and downward feedback scores were significantly different in terms of the evaluation factors. Fourth, there were significant correlations between total scores of downward and upward feedback, and evaluation factor scores. In conclusion, the composition and weight of measurement items of multi-source feedback needs to be designed differently in terms of each job characteristics.
