  • This study used a single group pre and post-experimental design for nursing students to understand the effects of counseling theory and actual subjects on empathy and communication ability by applying traditional lecture-style education and case-based role-playing education. The subjects of this study were 66 students who took counseling theory and actual courses, understood the purpose of the study, and voluntarily agreed to participate in the study among all 2nd grade students enrolled in C nursing college in G area. The curriculum consisted of six weeks of lecture-style education, followed by case-based role-play education for six weeks. Three surveys were conducted before training, after lecture-style training, and after case-based role-play training. The collected data were analyzed using the repeated measurement variance analysis using the SPSS 26.0 program. As a result of this study, when nursing students were selected as 20-29 years old and compared the effectiveness of the program according to gender and time point, there was no significant difference in the empathy ability of the subjects by group or time point. There was no significant difference in communication ability according to the group, but there was a significant difference according to the time point (F=4.20, p=.017). Therefore, it was proved that the application of education using case-based role play to counseling theory and actual subjects has a positive effect on communication ability of nursing students rather than lecture-style education.

  • Purpose: This study was undertaken to identify the effects of a camp-type group counseling program based on the self-determination theory, for controlling smartphone usage amongst university students. The program consisted of smartphone overdependence, basic psychological needs, and adaptation to college life. Method: This was a quasi-experimental research with a non-equivalent control group design (pre-test and post-test design). A total of 38 freshmen (17 experimental and 21 control) participated in the study. Experimental subjects attended a two nights and three days camp, where the group counseling program included meetings for basic psychological needs (eg., autonomy, competence, and relatedness). Results: This study showed significant differences in basic psychological needs (Z=-2.91, p=.003) and adaptation to college life (Z=-3.47, p<.001). Although no significant difference was obtained in the degree of smartphone overdependence (p=.194), mean score of the experimental group pre-test and post-test changed from the level of potential risk users to general users. Conclusion: The current findings indicate that by considering the basic psychological needs and adaptation to college life, our program could be an effective intervention for controlling smartphone usage amongst college students. Therefore, we propose that a camp-type counseling program could be considered for application as group therapy for programs associated with preventing smartphone overdependence.

  • Objectives: Weight counseling is an inevitable process for patients with obesity who intend to lose weight; however, the contents of real-world counseling practices remain uncertain in Korean medicine (KM) practice. This study aimed to explore the structure and constituents of obesity counseling in KM. Methods: Qualitative methods were used to explore the structure of weight counseling and clinicians' approaches to weight counseling, particularly the advice and main constituents of weight counseling in KM. Nine KM clinicians (4 women, 5 men) from nine clinics completed face-to-face, individual and semi-structured interviews from September 2019 to February 2020 in Seoul, Daejeon, Cheonan, Seongnam, Asan, and Hwaseoug. The interviews were digitally recorded, transcribed verbatim, and categorized based on their constituents. Results: During weight loss counseling, the six principal constituents of KM identified were: planning with patients, motivation, correcting misinformation on weight loss, dietary and exercise advice, medication guidance, and customized guides for each type. Conclusion: Clinicians with in-depth knowledge about obesity prescribed personalized guidance for exercise, diet, and medication through an integrative approach. The study results provide an in-depth understanding of weight counseling in KM. These six constituents could guide the counseling provided by clinicians in obesity care.

  • With the increased use of computers in medical fields, we can consider introducing computer mediated communication into the area of patient care such as medical or health counseling and education. But little was known about what problems can be counseled, what is the main direction of counseling, and what difficulties are met during the computer mediated counseling. So I conducted this study. This is a fundamental study concerning the health counseling by the inter-net. In this study, medical counseling using a method of questioning -answering through a computer mediated communication system was carried out from June 1998 to May 1999. I analyzed the contents of questions and answers by the ICPC classification. The ICPC classification emerged as a standard for information categorization in Primary Health Care within a few years. One of the most prominent features of this classification is the inclusion of the complaints of the patients (symptoms & complaints) and the social problems (Chapter Z). Thus, and for the first time, the demand of patients may be assessed such as it is expressed in the reality. The ICPC list is now an international standard whose validity is not questioned any more. It is translated in more than twenty different languages. The data collected were analyzed by descriptive statistical method, c2 test by cross tabulations. Followings are the results of this study. 1. The 3,054 users composed of 64% of males and 36% of females. The highest number of users was showed in the age group of $25{\sim}29$ (39.4%). 2. During the one-year period, the average number of counseling per user was 2.5 cases and per day was 21.1 cases. 3. In classifying symptoms and complaints by 17 chapter, digestive(17.6%), general and unspecified (12.7%), skin(12.7%) and musculoskeletal system (9.6%) were most common questions. 4. The distribution of diagnosis by 17 chapter, general and unspecified (21.4%), digestive (15.3%), skin (11.9%) and mus- culoskeletal system (8.9%) were most common answers. 5. Many users wanted to know symptoms and complaints(3,609 cases), treatment principles (2,928 cases), prognosis and preventive methods for health problems which were previously diagnosed (284 cases).
