  • Accurate modeling of a dynamic system from experimental data is the bases for the model updating or heath monitoring of the system. Modal analysis or modal test is a routine process to get the modal parameters of a dynamic system. The modal parameters include the natural frequencies, damping ratios and mode shapes. This paper presents a new method that can derive the equations of motion for a dynamic system from the modal parameters obtained by the modal analysis or modal test. The present method based on the relation between the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the state space equation derives the mass, damping and stiffness matrices of the system. The modeling of a cantilevered beam from modal parameters is an example to prove the efficiency and accuracy of the present method. Using the lateral displacements only, not the rotations, gives limited information for the system. The numerical verification up to now gives reasonable results and the verification with the test data is scheduled.

  • The major purpose of this study is to determine the dynamic behavior of soil-pile-structure interaction system considering the underground cavity. For the analysis, a numerical method fur ground response analysis using FE-BE coupling method is developed. The total system is divided into two parts so called far field and near field. The far field is modeled by boundary element formulation using the multi-layered dynamic fundamental solution that satisfied radiational condition of wave. And this is coupled with near field modeled by finite elements. For the verification of dynamic analysis in the frequency domain, both forced vibration analysis and free-field response analysis are performed. The behavior of soil non-linearity is considered using the equivalent linear approximation method. As a result, it is shown that the developed method can be an efficient numerical method to solve the seismic response analysis considering the underground cavity in 2D problem.

  • This paper aims to present an alternative analytical method for transient vibration analysis of doubly-curved laminated shells subjected to dynamic loads. In the method proposed, the governing differential equations of laminated shell are derived using the dynamic version of the principle of virtual displacements. The governing equations of first order shear deformation laminated shell are obtained by Navier solution procedure. Time-dependent equations are transformed to the Laplace domain and then Laplace parameter dependent equations are solved numerically. The results obtained in the Laplace domain are transformed to the time domain with the help of modified Durbin's numerical inverse Laplace transform method. Verification of the presented method is carried out by comparing the results with those obtained by Newmark method and ANSYS finite element software. Also effects of number of laminates, different material properties and shell geometries are discussed. The numerical results have proved that the presented procedure is a highly accurate and efficient solution method.

  • This paper presents the method of numerical analysis concerned with the hydropdynamic forces and moments of the floating bodies exerted by waves. The analytic methods of hydrodynamic wave forces and moments for large volume structures are generally classified into four categories ; the strip method, the boundary element method, the finite element method, and the potential matching method. In the case of the comparatively large structures, diffraction theory can be applied. However, there are no application limits of diffraction theory which have been known concerning with the analytic method of the rectangular structures. In this paper, the two-dimensional B.E.M. is treated for a moored small rectangular structure in order to evaluate applicability of diffraction theory. Numerical calculation is carried out for the structure. The results are compared with some other ones for verification. The result shows that diffraction theory is applicable to structures smaller than 0.15 in the ratio of the representative structure length d to wave length L for rectangular ones.

  • The purpose of this study is to estimate the soil loss amount with Geographic Information System according to the land use change of Buju mountain area in Mokpo city. To estimate the soil loss, Universal Soil Loss Equation which is the most proper technique to predict soil loss in this site condition is adopted and IDRISI, a raster GIS software, is used. GIS application with USLE is very efficient to estimate soil loss accurately and fastly. In order to decide value and to find application method of USLE factors, we used existing rainfall erosion index, soil erodibility analysis, slope length, slope steepness, vegetation management and practices, which are rated by GIS through the analysis of various studies related USLE. The result of this study was compared with the previous other researches to verify our method of constructing numerical data of USLE's factors. The result of verification of our way showed significance for the soil loss in forest area. But the result of verification for the soil loss in forest area. But the result of verification for the soil loss of cultivated area showed some errors. It seems that this result was due to local variation of topographical map.

  • This paper presents the virtual mass method to implement the prediction of total resistance for ice-going ship in floe ice region based on the combined method of CFD and DEM. Two ways of floe ice distribution are adopted for the analysis and comparison. The synthetic ice model test has been conducted to determine the optimal virtual mass coefficients for the two different floe ice distributions. Moreover, the further verification and prediction are developed in different ice conditions. The results show that, the fixed and random distributions in numerical method can simulate the interaction of ship and ice vividly, the trend of total resistance varying with the speed and ice concentration obtained by the numerical simulation is consistent with the model test. The random distribution of floe ice has higher similarity and better accuracy than fixed distribution.

  • In this study, the shock wave focusing of an elliptic reflector is numerically simulated by solving the Euler equations. The numerical method is the second order upwind TVD scheme with a finite volume discretization. For the verification of the present method, we simulate the moving shock wave passing through a two-dimensional corner. The computed isopycnics are compared with the earlier experiment. Numerical results of the elliptic reflectors show that the density and pressure at the focusing point increase linearly as the aspect ratio of the reflector becomes deep. On the other hand, the gas dynamic focal length decreased with the increase of the reflector aspect ratio.

  • This paper discusses on the dynamic responsed of an elastically restrained beam under a moving mass of constant velocity. Governing equations of motion taking into account of all inertia effects of the moving mass were derived by Galerkin's mode summation method, and Runge-Kutta integration method was applied to solve the differential equations. Numerical solutions for dynamic deflections of beams were obtained for the changes of the various parameters (spring stiffness, spring position, mass ratios and velocity ratios of the moving mass). In order to verify the numerical predictions for the dynamic response of the beam, experiments were conducted. Numerical solutions for the dynamic responses of the test beam have a good agreement with experimental ones.

  • This paper presents a documentation and development method to facilitate the certification of scientific computing software used in the safety analysis of nuclear facilities. To study the problems faced during quality assurance and certification activities, a case study was performed on legacy software used for thermal analysis of a fuelpin in a nuclear reactor. Although no errors were uncovered in the code, 27 issues of incompleteness and inconsistency were found with the documentation. This work proposes that software documentation follow a rational process, which includes a software requirements specification following a template that is reusable, maintainable, and understandable. To develop the design and implementation, this paper suggests literate programming as an alternative to traditional structured programming. Literate programming allows for documenting of numerical algorithms and code together in what is termed the literate programmer's manual. This manual is developed with explicit traceability to the software requirements specification. The traceability between the theory, numerical algorithms, and implementation facilitates achieving completeness and consistency, as well as simplifies the process of verification and the associated certification.

  • In the present work, wave transformation by vertical columns and its wave forces acting on them are discussed using a direct 3-D numerical model based on the VOF (Volume Of Fluid) method. The numerical results for wave transformations and wave forces are critically compared to an advanced experimental data, and provide the verification of the numerical model used in the present study. Overall model-data comparisons are good. After verification of the numerical model, it is used to simulate wave fields around dual vertical columns with arbitrary cross section, and the characteristics of nonlinear wave forces and wave transformations according to the variations of different cross section types of vertical columns, an interval of vertical columns and incident wave angle are discussed.
