Three-dimensional numerical simulation using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was carried out in order to investigate the formation and dispersion of the plume discharged from the stack of a thermal power station. The simulation was based on the standard ${\kappa}{\sim}{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model and a finite-volume method. Warm and moist exhaust from a power plant stack forms a visible plume as entering the cold ambient air. In the simulation, moisture content, emission velocity and temperature of the flue gas, air temperature and wind speed were dealt with the main parameters to analyze the properties of the plume composed mainly of water vapor. As a result of the simulation, the plume could be more apparent in cold winter due to a big difference of latent heat capacity. At no wind condition, the white plume rises 120 m upward from the top of the stack, and expands to 40 m around from the stack in cold winter after flue gas heat recovery. The influencing distance of relative humidity will be about 100 m to 400 m downstream from the stack with a cross wind effect. The decrease of flue gas temperature by heat recovery of thermal energy facilitates the formation of the plume and restrains its dispersion. Wind speed with vertical distribution affects the plume dispersion as well as the density.

A critical component of air pollution modeling is the representation of atmospheric flow fields within a model domain, since an accurate air quality simulation requires an accurate portrayal of the three-dimensional wind fields. The present study investigated data assimilation using surface observational data in the complex coastal regions to simulate a realistic atmospheric flow fields. Surface observational data were categorized into three groups (Near coastal region, Far coastal region 1, Far costal region 2) by the locations where the sites are. Experiments were designed according to the location of observational stations and MM5/CALPUFF was used. The results of numerical simulation of atmospheric flow fields are used as input data for CALPUFF which predicts dispersion fields of air pollutants. The result of this study indicated that data assimilation using data in the far coastal region 2 provided an attractive method for generating realistic meteorological fields and dispersion fields of air pollutants in Gwangyang area because data in the near coastal region are variable and narrow representation.

The coupled model (SMART) of dynamic meteorology model and particle dispersion model was developed. The numerical experiment on the relationship between change of land use and diffusion behavior in complex terrain was carried out using this model. It tried to investigate the change of particle diffusion behavior and local weather under the condition in which land-land breeze and sea breeze and mountain breeze intermingled. The numerical experiment results are as follows; 1) The more complicated local circulation field of the interaction of sea breeze, mountain breeze and Land -land breeze is formed. Then, the region circulation in which the urbanization is specific by location of the region is strengthened and is weakened. 2) Though in the region with dominant sea breeze, Land-land breeze does not appear directly, the progress of the sea wind to the inland is affected. 3) In the prediction of the air diffusion, emission high quality and accurate information of the emission site are important. That is to say, the dispersion predicting result which emission high quality and small error of the site perfectly vary for Land - land breeze in the effect may be brought about.
Within the scope of the plane-strain state, by utilizing the three-dimensional linearized theory of elastic waves in initially stressed piezoelectric and elastic materials, Lamb wave propagation and the influence of the initial stresses on this propagation in a sandwich plate with pre-stressed piezoelectric face and pre-stressed metal elastic core layers are investigated. Dispersion equations are derived for the extensional and flexural Lamb waves and, as a result of numerical solution to these equations, the corresponding dispersion curves for the first (fundamental) and second modes are constructed. Concrete numerical results are obtained for the cases where the face layers' materials are PZT-2 or PZT-6B, but the material of the middle layer is Steel (St) or Aluminum (Al). Sandwich plates PZT-2/St/PZT-2, PZT-2/Al/PZT-2, PZT-6B/St/PZT-6B and PZT-6B/Al/PZT-6B are examined and the influence of the problem parameters such as piezoelectric and dielectric constants, layer thickness ratios and third order elastic constants of the St and Al on the effects of the initial stresses on the wave propagation velocity is studied.
Gamma generalized linear models have received less attention than Poisson and binomial generalized linear models. Therefore, many old-established statistical techniques are still used in gamma generalized linear models. In particular, existing literature and textbooks still use approximate estimates for the dispersion parameter. In this paper we study the efficiency of various dispersion parameter estimators in gamma generalized linear models and perform numerical simulations. Numerical studies show that the maximum likelihood estimator and Cox-Reid adjusted maximum likelihood estimator are recommended and that approximate estimates should be avoided in practice.
In this work, we report detailed numerical analysis of the near-elliptic core index-guiding triangular-lattice and square-lattice photonic crystal fiber (PCFs); where we numerically characterize the birefringence, single mode, cut-off behavior and group velocity dispersion and effective area properties. By varying geometry and examining the modal field profile we find that for the same relative values of $d/{\Lambda}$, triangular-lattice PCFs show higher birefringence whereas the square-lattice PCFs show a wider range of single-mode operation. Square-lattice PCF was found to be endlessly single-mode for higher air-filling fraction ($d/{\Lambda}$). Dispersion comparison between the two structures reveal that we need smaller lengths of triangular-lattice PCF for dispersion compensation whereas PCFs with square-lattice with nearer relative dispersion slope (RDS) can better compensate the broadband dispersion. Square-lattice PCFs show zero dispersion wavelength (ZDW) red-shifted, making it preferable for mid-IR supercontinuum generation (SCG) with highly non-linear chalcogenide material. Square-lattice PCFs show higher dispersion slope that leads to compression of the broadband, thus accumulating more power in the pulse. On the other hand, triangular-lattice PCF with flat dispersion profile can generate broader SCG. Square-lattice PCF with low Group Velocity Dispersion (GVD) at the anomalous dispersion corresponds to higher dispersion length ($L_D$) and higher degree of solitonic interaction. The effective area of square-lattice PCF is always greater than its triangular-lattice counterpart making it better suited for high power applications. We have also performed a comparison of the dispersion properties of between the symmetric-core and asymmetric-core triangular-lattice PCF. While we need smaller length of symmetric-core PCF for dispersion compensation, broadband dispersion compensation can be performed with asymmetric-core PCF. Mid-Infrared (IR) SCG can be better performed with asymmetric core PCF with compressed and high power pulse, while wider range of SCG can be performed with symmetric core PCF. Thus, this study will be extremely useful for designing/realizing fiber towards a custom application around these characteristics.

Two types of one-dimensional dispersion-correction scheme are developed to take into account the dispersion effects for the simulation of tsunami propagation using ADCIRC finite element model based on shallow-water equations The first is an implicit scheme, and the dispersion-correction is accomplished by controlling the weighting factor assigned to each spatial derivative term of different time levels. The other scheme is explicit and the dispersion is considered by adjusting the element size. The validity of the dispersion-correction scheme proposed in this study is confirmed through the comparison of numerical solutions calculated using the new schemes with analytical ones considering dispersion effect of waves.
The paper deals with the study of the dispersion of quasi-Lamb waves in a hydro-elastic system consisting of an elastic plate, barotropic compressible inviscid fluid, and rigid wall. The motion of the plate is described using the exact equations of elastodynamics, however, the flow of the fluid using the linearized equations and relations of the Navier-Stokes equations. The corresponding dispersion equation is obtained and this equation is solved numerically, as a result of which the corresponding dispersion curves are constructed. The main attention is focused on the effect of the presence of the fluid and the effect of the fluid layer thickness (i.e., the fluid depth) on the dispersion curves. The influence of the problem parameters on the dispersion curves related to the quasi-Scholte wave is also considered. As a result of the analyses of the numerical results, concrete conclusions are made about the influence of the fluid depth, the rigid wall restriction on the fluid motion, and the material properties of the constituents on the dispersion curves. During the analyses, the zeroth and the first four modes of the propagating waves are considered.
The paper studies the dispersion and attenuation of propagating waves in the "plate+compressible viscous fluid layer" system in the case where the fluid layer flow is restricted with a rigid wall, and in the case where the fluid layer has a free face. The motion of the plate is described by the exact equations of elastodynamics and the flow of the fluid by the linearized Navier-Stokes equations for compressible barotropic Newtonian viscous fluids. Analytical expressions are obtained for the amplitudes of the sought values, and the dispersion equation is derived using the corresponding boundary and compatibility conditions. To find the complex roots of the dispersion equation, an algorithm based on equating the modulus of the dispersion determinant to zero is developed. Numerical results on the dispersion and attenuation curves for various pairs of plate and fluid materials under different fluid layer face conditions are presented and discussed. Corresponding conclusions on the influence of the problem parameters on the dispersion and attenuation curves are made and, in particular, it is established that the change of the free face boundary condition with the impermeability condition can influence the dispersion and attenuation curves not only in the quantitative, but also in the qualitative sense.
In this paper we study numerical behavior of the adjustments for the variances of the pearson and deviance type dispersion statistics in two overdispersed mixture models; negative binomial and beta-binomial distribution. They are important families of an extended quasi-likelihood model which is very useful for the joint modelling of mean and dispersion. Comparisons are done for two types of dispersion statistics for various mean and dispersion parameters by simulation studies.
