  • Structural health monitoring for ships and offshore structures is important in various aspects. Ships and offshore structures are continuously exposed to various environmental conditions, such as waves, wind, and currents. In the event of an accident, immense economic losses, environmental pollution, and safety problems can occur, so it is necessary to detect structural damage or defects early. In this study, structural response data of multi-linked floating offshore structures under various wave load conditions was calculated by performing fluid-structure coupled analysis. Furthermore, the order reduction method with distortion base mode was applied to the structures for predicting the structural response by using the results of numerical analysis. The distortion base mode order reduction method can predict the structural response of a desired area with high accuracy, but prediction performance is affected by sensor arrangement. Optimization based on a genetic algorithm was performed to search for optimal sensor arrangement and improve the prediction performance of the distortion base mode-based reduced-order model. Consequently, a sensor arrangement that predicted the structural response with an error of about 84.0% less than the initial sensor arrangement was derived based on the root mean squared error, which is a prediction performance evaluation index. The computational cost was reduced by about 8 times compared to evaluating the prediction performance of reduced-order models for a total of 43,758 sensor arrangement combinations. and the expected performance was overturned to approximately 84.0% based on sensor placement, including the largest square root error.

  • The motion data glove is a representative human-computer interaction tool that inputs human hand gestures to computers by measuring their motions. The motion data glove is essential equipment used for new computer technologiesincluding home automation, virtual reality, biometrics, motion capture. For its popular usage, this paper attempts to develop an inexpensive visual.type motion data glove that can be used without any special equipment. The proposed approach has the special feature; it can be developed as a low-cost one becauseof not using high-cost motion-sensing fibers that were used in the conventional approaches. That makes its easy production and popular use possible. This approach adopts a visual method that is obtained by improving conventional optic motion capture technology, instead of mechanical method using motion-sensing fibers. Compared to conventional visual methods, the proposed method has the following advantages and originalities Firstly, conventional visual methods use many cameras and equipments to reconstruct 3D pose with eliminating occlusions But the proposed method adopts a mono vision approachthat makes simple and low cost equipments possible. Secondly, conventional mono vision methods have difficulty in reconstructing 3D pose of occluded parts in images because they have weak points about occlusions. But the proposed approach can reconstruct occluded parts in images by using originally designed thin-bar-shaped optic indicators. Thirdly, many cases of conventional methods use nonlinear numerical computation image analysis algorithm, so they have inconvenience about their initialization and computation times. But the proposed method improves these inconveniences by using a closed-form image analysis algorithm that is obtained from original formulation. Fourthly, many cases of conventional closed-form algorithms use approximations in their formulations processes, so they have disadvantages of low accuracy and confined applications due to singularities. But the proposed method improves these disadvantages by original formulation techniques where a closed-form algorithm is derived by using exponential-form twist coordinates, instead of using approximations or local parameterizations such as Euler angels.

  • Formulation of the geometric optimization for truss structures based on the elasticity theory turn out to be the nonlinear programming problem which has to deal with the Cross sectional area of the member and the coordinates of its nodes simultaneously. A few techniques have been proposed and adopted for the analysis of this nonlinear programming problem for the time being. These techniques, however, bear some limitations on truss shapes loading conditions and design criteria for the practical application to real structures. A generalized algorithm for the geometric optimization of the truss structures which can eliminate the above mentioned limitations, is developed in this study. The algorithm developed utilizes the two-phases technique. In the first phase, the cross sectional area of the truss member is optimized by transforming the nonlinear problem into SUMT, and solving SUMT utilizing the modified Newton-Raphson method. In the second phase, the geometric shape is optimized utilizing the unidirctional search technique of the Rosenbrock method which make it possible to minimize only the objective function. The algorithm developed in this study is numerically tested for several truss structures with various shapes, loading conditions and design criteria, and compared with the results of the other algorithms to examme its applicability and stability. The numerical comparisons show that the two-phases algorithm developed in this study is safely applicable to any design criteria, and the convergency rate is very fast and stable compared with other iteration methods for the geometric optimization of truss structures.

  • This paper describes an application of domain decomposition method for parallel finite element analysis which is required to large scale 3D structural analysis. A parallel finite element method system which adopts a domain decomposition method is developed. Node is generated if its distance from existing node points is similar to the node spacing function at the point. The node spacing function is well controlled by the fuzzy knowledge processing. The Delaunay triangulation method is introduced as a basic tool for element generation. Domain decomposition method using automatic mesh generation system holds great benefits for 3D analyses. Aa parallel numerical algorithm for the finite element analyses, domain decomposition method was combined with an iterative solver, i.e. the conjugate gradient(CG) method where a whole analysis domain is fictitiously divided into a number of subdomains without overlapping. Practical performance of the present system are demonstrated through several examples.

  • This paper deals with the application of joint element in the finite element modeling of discontinuities encountered during rock tunneling. A nodal displacement joint element was implemented in a two dimensional finite element program GEOFE2D. The applicability of the joint element for modeling of discontinuities and the numerical stability of the implemented algorithm were examined by comparing the results of reduced small scale model tests as well as commercially available FEM program. The GEOFE2D was then used to analyze a tunnel crossed by a major discontinuity for the purpose of understanding the effect of discontinuity on the tunnel behavior. In addition, a modeling technique for the junction of discontinuity and shotcrete lining was presented. The results of analysis indicated that the stress-strain field around the tunnel is significantly altered by the presence of discontinuity, and that the stresses in the shotcrete lining considerably increase at the junction of the shotcrete lining and the discontinuity. It is therefore concluded that the major discontinuities must be carefully modeled in the finite element analysis of a tunneling problem in order to obtain more reliable results close to actual tunnel behavior.

  • In a bursty user traffic mode, ALOHA random multiple access protocol achieves higher performance than any conventional fixed assignment technique. One of central problems in slotted ALOHA is synchronization. Because of the long propagation delay in satellite mobile communication, packet may be spilt over into adjacent slots and thus guard time may be included between packet intervals. In conventional ALOHA channels, simultaneous transmission by two or more users results in a collision : the unsuccessful packets have to be retransmitted according to some retransmission algorithm. However, in a radio environment, users are often at different distances from the receiver : therefore, their received signals have substantially different power levels. The packet arriving with the highest energy now has a good chance of being detected accurately. Similarly, in some spread-spectrum random access systems, the earliest arriving packet dominates later arriving packets and thus captures the channel. In this paper slotted ALOHA channel with non zero guard time and capture probability is studied. Using the Markovian model, the performance of slotted ALOHA with guard time and capture effects is derived and compared with that of the conventional ALOHA via numerical analysis.

  • Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs) are self-organized networks that do not rely in their operation on wired infrastructure. As in any networking technology, security is an essential element in MANET as well, for proliferation of this type of networks. But supporting secure communication in MANETs proved to be a significant challenge, mainly due to the fact that the set of nodes in the network can change frequently and rapidly and due to the lack of access to the wired infrastructure. In particular, the trust model and the authentication protocols, which were developed for wired and infrastructure-based networks, cannot be used in MANETs. In [1], we addressed the problem of efficient authentication of distributed mobile users in geographically large networks and proposed a new authentication scheme for this case of MANETs. The proposed scheme exploits randomized groups to efficiently share authentication information among nodes that together implement the function of a distributive Certification Authority(CA). In this paper, we analyze numerically the performance of authentication method using randomized groups and compare with the simulation result.

  • This application study of a swash-plate type axial piston pump was concerned about the lubrication characteristics between cylinder barrel and valve plate which are the main rotating body and its opposite sliding part respectively. A computer simulation was implemented to assess bearing and sealing functions of the fluid film between cylinder barrel and valve plate. A numerical algorithm was developed to facilitate simultaneous calculations of dynamic cylinder pressure, 3 degree-of-freedom barrel motions considering inertia effect, and fluid film pressure assuming full fluid film lubrication regime. Central clearance, tilt angle, and azimuth angle of the rotating body were calculated for each time step. Surface waviness was found to be an influential factor due to the small fluid film thickness which can appear in flat land bearings. Five surface lays which can form on the lubrication surface in accordance with machining process were defined and analyzed using the simulation tool. Oil leakage flow and frictional torque in the fluid film between cylinder barrel and valve plate were also calculated to discuss in the viewpoint of energy loss. The simulation results showed that in actual sliding conditions proper surface non-flatness can make a positive effect on the energy efficiency and reliability of the thrust bearing.

  • This paper concentrates on the finite element analysis of concrete structures considering the material nonlinearity and time-dependent structural behavior. Using the rotating crack model among the smeared cracking model, the structural behavior up to ultimate load is simulated, and concrete is assumed to be an orthotropic material. Especially to include the tension stiffening effect in bending behavior, a criterion based on the fracture mechanics concept is introduced and the numerical error according to the finite element mesh size can be minimized through the application of the proposed criterion. Besides, the governing equation for steel is systematized by embeded model to cope with the difficulty in modeling of complex geometry. Finally, to trace the structural behavior with time under cracked and/or uncracked section, an algorithm for the purpose of time-dependent analysis is formulated in plane stress-strain condition by the age-adjusted effective modulus method.

  • In the electric railway vehicles, securing stable current collection performance is an important factor which determines the quality of operation and the maximum speed. In order to predict such current collection performance, various analysis methods have been proposed for a long time. Also, investigations for improving the accuracy of the results and the efficiency of the analysis process have been performed. In this paper, a method for the efficiency improvement has been proposed. This method is based on the basic concept that the system equations of motion of a catenary numerical model include only interactive range with a pantograph. In this paper, an algorithm and generalized process for applying proposed method are introduced. Also, validity of the results and utility of the method was verified and studied.
