  • SMAC method, one of the numerical simulation techniques, is modified from the original MAC method for the time-dependent variation of fluid flows. The Navier-Stokes equations for incompressible time-dependent viscous flow are applied, and Also marker particles which present the visualization of fluid flows are used. In this study, two-dimensional numerical simulations of the overtopping are carried out by SMAC method, and the simulation results are visualized, In addition to, motion pictures are made for efficient visualization of the simulation results. This numerical simulation could also be applied to the design of coastal structures as dike and revetment.

  • The flowfield of Weis-Fogh type ship's Propulsion is visualized by numerical simulations using the discrete vortex method and by the hydrogen bubble technique. The simulations are performed by assuming that the separations occur at the trailing edge of the wing. The streak lines and time lines are calculated by introducing the tracers at adequate intervals. They agree well with experimental results. The flowfield is unsteady and complex, but the properties of the flow are clarified by numerical and experimental visualization.

  • Supersonic microjets acquire considerable research interest from a fundamental fluid dynamics perspective, in part because the combination of highly compressible flow at low-to-moderate Reynolds number is not very common, and in part due to the complex nature of the flow itself. In addition, microjets have a great variety engineering applications such as micro-propulsion, MEMS(Micro-Electro Mechanical Systems) components, microjet actuators and fine particle deposition and removal. Numerical simulations have been carried out at moderate nozzle pressure ratios and for different nozzle exit diameters to investigate and to understand in-depth of aerodynamic characteristics of supersonic microjets.

  • Recently, several advanced flow visualization techniques such as Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) including stereo PIV, holographic PIV, and dynamic PIV have been developed. These advanced techniques have strong potential as the experimental technology which can be used for verifying numerical simulation. In addition, there would be indispensable in solving complicated thermo-fluid flow problems not only in the industrial fields such as automotive, space, electronics, aero- and hydro-dynamics, steel, and information engineering, but also in the basic research fields of medical science, bio-medical engineering, environmental and energy engineering etc. Especially, NT Nano Technology) and BT (Bio Technology) strongly demand these advanced measurement techniques, because it is difficult for conventional methods to observe most complicated nano- and bio-fluidic phenomena. In this paper, the basic principle of these advanced visualization techniques and their practical applications which cannot be resolved by conventional methods, such as flow in automotive HVAC system, ship and propeller wake, three-dimensional flow measurement in micro-conduits, and flow around a circulating cylinder will be introduced.

  • The Flow patterns around two cylinders in various arrangements were studied by a discrete vortex method. The flow for the surface of each cylinder was represented by arranging bound vortices at adequate intervals. The viscous diffusion of fluid was represented by the random walk method. The vortex distributions, streaklines, timelines and velocity vectors around two cylinders were calculated for centre-to-centre pitch rations of P/D=1.5 and 2.5, attack angles of $\alpha=0^{\circ},\;30^{\circ},\;60^{\circ},\;and\;90^{\circ}$, correspond to the photographs by flow visualization and the flow intereference between two cylinders in var ious arrangements was clearly visualized by a numerical simulation.

  • In this study, the mixing process of two distinct flow is numerically investigated. Two flow with different physical properties (resin and hardener) are mixed through the opposing mixing jets. At a high pressure mixing process, the high speed flow is provided by two in-line nozzles. In the case of numerical modeling, Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes Equations (RANS) is conducted to model the flow pattern inside the chamber. Additionally, SST k-omega turbulence model is selected to predict the kinetic energy of flow in impingement zone. The results show that mixing of two distinct flows would be efficient if the velocity of jet is high enough and nozzle diameter is a predominant parameter. Also, this velocity would create higher shear stress between two distinct flows which increases the mixing quality as well as strength of formed vortices. Eventually, the histogram of concentration fraction of resin is examined in order to show the quality of mixing and the range of concentration fractions in the output of chamber.

  • In the present paper, visualization techniques in fluid dynamic experiments such as Schlieren photograph are numerically simulated so that the same output as the experimental flow visualization can be obtained from the computed results for the fair comparison. Numerical methods to simulate optical visualizations, that are Schlieren photograph, shadowgraph and interferogram, are considered. Some examples of pictures obtained by the present methods show the importance of the simulations of visualization techniques for the correct comparisons of the computations and experiments.

  • Meteorological data contains observation and numerical weather prediction model output data. The computerized analysis and visualization of meteorological data often requires very high computing capability due to the large size and complex structure of the data. Because the meteorological data is frequently formed in multi-variables, 3-dimensional and time-series form, it is very important to visualize and analyze the data in 3D spatial domain in order to get more understanding about the meteorological phenomena. In this research, we developed interactive 3-dimensional visualization techniques for visualizing meteorological data on a PC environment such as volume rendering, iso-surface rendering or stream line. The visualization techniques developed in this research are expected to be effectively used as basic technologies not only for deeper understanding and more exact prediction about meteorological environments but also for scientific and spatial data visualization research in any field from which three dimensional data comes out such as oceanography, earth science, and aeronautical engineering.

  • Scientific volume visualization addresses the representation, manipulation, and rendering of volumetric data sets, providing mechanisms for looking closely into structures and understanding their complexity and dynamics. In the past several years, a tremendous amount of research and development has been directed toward algorithms and data modeling methods for a scientific data visualization. But there has been very little work on developing a mathematical volume model that feeds this visualization. Especially, in flow visualization, the volume model has long been required as a guidance to display the very large amounts of data resulting from numerical simulations. In this paper, we focus on the mathematical representation of volumetric data sets and the method of extracting meaningful information from the derived volume model. For this purpose, a B-spline volume is extended to a high dimensional trivariate model which is called as a flow visualization model in this paper. Two three-dimensional examples are presented to demonstrate the capabilities of this model.
